RESUMO

Cholesteric liquid crystal microcapsules (CLCMs) are used to improve the stability of liquid crystals while ensuring their stimulus response performance and versatility, with representative applications such as sensing, anticounterfeiting, and smart fabrics. However, the reflectivity and angular anisotropy decrease because of the anchoring effect of the polymer shell matrix, and the influence of particle size on this has not been thoroughly studied. In this study, the effect of synthesis technology on microcapsule particle size was investigated using a complex coalescence method, and the effect of particle size on the reflectivity and angular anisotropy of CLCMs was investigated in detail. A particle size of approximately 66 µm with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA, 1:1) exhibited a relative reflectivity of 16.6% and a bandwidth of 20 nm, as well as a narrow particle size distribution of 22 µm. The thermosetting of microcapsules coated with PVA was adjusted and systematically investigated by controlling the mass ratio. The optimized mass ratio of microcapsules (66 µm) to PVA was 2:1, increasing the relative reflectivity from 16.6% (1:1) to 32.0% (2:1) because of both the higher CLCM content and the matching between the birefringence of the gelatin-arabic shell system and PVA. Furthermore, color based on Bragg reflections was observed in the CLCM-coated ortho-axis and blue-shifted off-axis, and this change was correlated with the CLCM particle size. Such materials are promising for anticounterfeiting and color-based applications with bright colors and angular anisotropy in reflection.

RESUMO

Stem cells (SCs) have been used therapeutically for decades, yet their applications are limited by factors such as the risk of immune rejection and potential tumorigenicity. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), a key paracrine component of stem cell potency, overcome the drawbacks of stem cell applications as a cell-free therapeutic agent and play an important role in treating various diseases. However, EVs derived from two-dimensional (2D) planar culture of SCs have low yield and face challenges in large-scale production, which hinders the clinical translation of EVs. Three-dimensional (3D) culture, given its ability to more realistically simulate the in vivo environment, can not only expand SCs in large quantities, but also improve the yield and activity of EVs, changing the content of EVs and improving their therapeutic effects. In this review, we briefly describe the advantages of EVs and EV-related clinical applications, provide an overview of 3D cell culture, and finally focus on specific applications and future perspectives of EVs derived from 3D culture of different SCs.

RESUMO

Liquid crystals (LCs) are well known for inherent responsiveness to external stimuli, such as light, thermal, magnetic, and electric fields. Cholesteric LCs are among the most fascinating, since they possess distinctive optical properties due to the helical molecular orientation. However, the good flow, easy contamination, and poor stability of small-molecule LCs limit their further applications, and microencapsulation as one of the most effective tools can evade these disadvantages. Microencapsulation can offer shell-core structure with LCs in the core can strengthen their stability, avoiding interference with the environment while maintaining the stimuli-responsiveness and optical properties. Here, we report recent progress in the fabrication and applications of cholesteric LC microcapsules (CLCMCs). We summarize general properties and basic principles, fabrication methods including interfacial polymerization, in-situ polymerization, complex coacervation, solvent evaporation, microfluidic and polymerization of reactive mesogens, and then give a comprehensive overview of their applications in various popular domains, including smart fabrics, smart sensor, smart displays, anti-counterfeiting, information encryption, biomedicine and actuators. Finally, we discuss the currently facing challenges and the potential development directions in this field.

RESUMO

This paper focuses on preparing broadband reflective liquid crystal films through the diffusion of monofunctional and bifunctional monomers in a photoinduced trilayer system. By combining the hydrophilic and hydrophobic liquid crystal glass surface treatment technologies, the polymer network of polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal (PSCLC) itself serves as a diffusion channel to form a trilayer cholesteric liquid crystal composite system containing bifunctional monomers, a nematic liquid crystal composite system, and a cholesteric liquid crystal composite system containing monofunctional monomers. Utilizing the difference in the polymerization rates of monofunctional and difunctional polymerizable monomers, the monomers and chiral compounds diffuse relative to each other, so that the liquid crystal pitch exhibits a gradient distribution, and the broadened reflective width can reach up to 1570 nm. There is no doubt that new and improved processes and technologies offer important possibilities for preparing and applying PSCLC films.

RESUMO

Herein, a simple approach for the fabrication of luminous self-assembled fibers based on halogen-bonded azopyridine complexes and oleic acid-modified quantum dots (QDs) is reported. The QDs uniformly align on the edge of the self-assembled fibers through the formation of van der Waals force between the alkyl chain of oleic acid on the QD surface and the alkyl chain of the halogen-bonded complexes, 15Br or 15I. Furthermore, the intermolecular interaction mechanism was elucidated by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This approach results in retention of the fluorescence properties of the QDs in the fibers. In addition, the bromine-bonded fibers can be assembled into tailored directional fibers upon evaporation of the solvent (tetrahydrofuran) when using capillaries via the capillary force. Interestingly, the mesogenic properties of the halogen-bonded complexes are preserved in the easily prepared halogen-bonded fluorescent fibers; this provides new insight into the design of functional self-assembly materials.

RESUMO

A simple and efficient method for the preparation of a film with flexible characteristic and selective reflection of near-infrared light is proposed. Based on the coexistence system (PD&SLC) of polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLC) and polymer stabilized liquid crystals (PSLC), it combines the flexibility of PDLC with the selectively reflection of PSLC. Innovative use of step-by-step light curing to achieve microstructural differences in the three-dimensional orientation of the material is proposed. That is, the difference between PDLC and PSLC in the planar orientation, as well as the gradient distribution of cholesteric phase liquid crystal pitch in the cell thickness direction, is observed. While realizing the flexibility of the material, the function of broadening the reflection bandwidth is fulfilled. This method of preparing liquid crystal films is expected to have great potential for applications, such as flexible smart windows, infrared light shielding, and sensors.

RESUMO

A simple and novel method for the deposition of polypyrrole (PPy) and cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) composites on different fiber substrates by reactive ink-jet printing was proposed. PPy/CNCs composites were successfully prepared, and the surface resistance of conductive layer deposited on different fiber substrates is the least when the monomer concentration is 0.6 M. PPy/CNCs were deposited on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to form a conductive layer by adding polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and the optimum sintering temperature is 100 °C (monomer/PVA ratio 4.0, conductivity 0.769 S cm-1). The PPy/CNCs conductive layer deposited on the paper has the lowest surface resistance and the best adhesion, and the surface resistance of PPy/CNCs conductive layer decreases first and then increases with the increase of sulfonate concentration. Moreover, the volume of anion in sulfonate will affect the arrangement and aggregation of PPy molecular chain in composite materials. Appropriate sulfonate doping can improve the conductivity and stability of conductive paper, and the maximum conductivity is 0.813 S cm-1. Three devices based on PPy/CNCs conductive paper were proposed and fabricated. Therefore, this ink-jet printing provides a new method for the preparation of conductive materials, sensors, energy storage and electromagnetic shielding, etc.

RESUMO

A novel high-strength polyimide (PI) nanocomposite film was designed and constructed by the copolymerization of epoxidized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-modified hexagonal boron nitride and polyamic acid (PAA). The composite filler (EPPOSS@Gh-BN) was composed of silane coupling agent KH550 modified hexagonal boron nitride (Gh-BN) and epoxidized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (EPPOSS), which improved not only the dispersion of the h-BN but also the effective interfacial stress transfer, leading to an enhanced mechanical strength of the resultant PI nanocomposite film of 114 MPa even with a slight EPPOSS@Gh-BN loading of 0.30 wt%, and the storage modulus was increased by more than 30% to 4 GPa compared to pure PI. Meanwhile, the PI/EPPOSS@Gh-BN nanocomposite has better heat transfer performance, higher hydrophobicity, lower dielectric properties, and higher heat stability than pure PI, and is therefore expected to provide an ideal platform for the development of highly flexible electronics in the future.

RESUMO

Swarm intelligence algorithm is an important evolutionary computation method that optimizes the objective function by imitating the behaviors of various organisms in nature. A two-stage swarm intelligence algorithm named spider pheromone coordination algorithm (SPC) is proposed in this paper. SPC tries to explore as many feasible solutions as possible on the cobweb at the positioning stage. It simulates the release and reception of different pheromones between spiders at the hunting stage, and then spiders move towards prey under the co-action of winds and pheromones. Different from the existing algorithms, SPC simulates the process that spiders accomplish intra-species communications through different pheromones and considers the impact on spider wind movement. A large number of typical benchmark functions are used in comparative numerical experiments to verify the performances of SPC. Experiments are made to compare SPC with a series of swarm intelligence algorithms, showing that SPC has higher convergence accuracy and stronger global searchability, effectively keeping the diversity of feasible solutions.

RESUMO

Computation offloading is one of the most important problems in edge computing. Devices can transmit computation tasks to servers to be executed through computation offloading. However, not all the computation tasks can be offloaded to servers with the limitation of network conditions. Therefore, it is very important to decide quickly how many tasks should be executed on servers and how many should be executed locally. Only computation tasks that are properly offloaded can improve the Quality of Service (QoS). Some existing methods only focus on a single objection, and of the others some have high computational complexity. There still have no method that could balance the targets and complexity for universal application. In this study, a Multi-Objective Whale Optimization Algorithm (MOWOA) based on time and energy consumption is proposed to solve the optimal offloading mechanism of computation offloading in mobile edge computing. It is the first time that MOWOA has been applied in this area. For improving the quality of the solution set, crowding degrees are introduced and all solutions are sorted by crowding degrees. Additionally, an improved MOWOA (MOWOA2) by using the gravity reference point method is proposed to obtain better diversity of the solution set. Compared with some typical approaches, such as the Grid-Based Evolutionary Algorithm (GrEA), Cluster-Gradient-based Artificial Immune System Algorithm (CGbAIS), Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm III (NSGA-III), etc., the MOWOA2 performs better in terms of the quality of the final solutions.

RESUMO

In this study, organic-inorganic hybrid mesogens of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and azopyridines (AzoPys) enabled by halogen bonding were prepared. Triple functions of the degree of orientation change, metal-enhanced fluorescence, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering were observed in Ag⋯Br-Br⋯AzoPy nanoparticles (12Br-Ag), which were induced by the in situ synthesis of Ag NPs in AzoPy. The bromine molecules were then linked by halogen bonding and electrostatic interaction resulting in the smectic A phase of 12Br-Ag. To demonstrate the potential of Br-Br⋯AzoPy (12Br) as a practical sensor, we used the 12Br compound to detect silver in an aqueous condition, and significant signals of the halogen-bonded complex-silver system were observed in the X-ray diffraction pattern and Raman spectra. Herein, we provide a novel perspective and design principle for the practical applications of organic-inorganic hybrid liquid crystals in environmental monitoring.

RESUMO

Surface-modified thermally expandable microcapsules (TEMs) hold potential for applications in various fields. In this work, we discussed the possible surface coating mechanism and reported the properties of TEMs coated with polyaniline (PANI) and polydisperse graphene oxide sheets (ionic liquid-graphene oxide hybrid nanomaterial (ILs-GO)). The surface coating of PANI/ ILs-GO increased the corresponding particle size and its distribution range. The morphologies analyzed by scanning electron microscopy indicated that no interfacial gap was observed between the microspheres ink and substrate layer during the substrate application. The thermal properties were determined by thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses. The addition of ILs-GO to the polyaniline coating significantly improved the thermal expansion and thermal conductivity of the microcapsules. The evaporation of hexane present in the core of TEMs was not prevented by the coating of PANI/ ILs-GO. The printing application of TEMs showed excellent adaptability to various flexible substrates with great 3D appearance. By incorporating a flame retardant agent into TEMs coated by PANI/ILs-GO, finally, these TEMs also demonstrated a great flame retardant ability. We expect that these TEM-coated PANI/ ILs-GO are likely to have the potential to improve the functional properties for various applications.

RESUMO

Flexible pressure sensors have attracted tremendous attention from researchers for their widely applications in tactile artificial intelligence, electric skin, disease diagnosis, and healthcare monitoring. Obtaining flexible pressure sensors with high sensitivity in a low cost and convenient way remains a huge challenge. In this paper, the composite dielectric layer based on the mixture of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with different aspect ratios and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was employed in flexible capacitive pressure sensor to increase its sensitivity. In addition, the screen printing instead of traditional etching based methods was used to prepare the electrodes array of the sensor. The results showed that the aspect ratio and weight fraction of the CNTs play an important role in improving the sensitivity of the printed capacitive pressure sensor. The prepared capacitive sensor with the CNTs/PDMS composite dielectric layer demonstrated a maximum sensitivity of 2.9 kPa-1 in the pressure range of 0-450 Pa, by using the CNTs with an aspect ratio of 1250-3750 and the weight fraction of 3.75%. The mechanism study revealed that the increase of the sensitivity of the pressure sensor should be attributed to the relative permittivity increase of the composite dielectric layer under pressure. Meanwhile, the printed 3 × 3 and 10 × 10 sensor arrays showed excellent spatial resolution and uniformity when they were applied to measure the pressure distribution. For further applications, the flexible pressure sensor was integrated on an adhesive bandage to detect the finger bending, as well as used to create Morse code by knocking the sensor to change their capacitance curves. The printed and flexible pressure sensor in this study might be a good candidate for the development of tactile artificial intelligence, intelligent medical diagnosis systems and wearable electronics.

RESUMO

Highly conductive ink with low sintering temperature is important for printed electronics on paper substrate. Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) of different average radii ranging from 48 to 176 nm were synthesized by adjusting the Ag+ concentration in the reaction process. The electric resistivity of the Ag NP-based ink film in relation to Ag NP size, sintering temperature, amount of PVP capping agent on Ag NP surface, and morphology evolution of the film during heating process was investigated. It was found that the resistivity of the films reduced very rapidly with increasing particle size due above all to reduced amount of protective agent capping on the Ag NPs. A semi-empirical relationship between the resistivity and the particle size was proposed. With the help of this mathematical expression, one gains both systematic and detailed insight to the resistivity evaluation with regard to the Ag particle size. The optimal electric resistivity of 4.6 µΩ cm was achieved at 140 °C for 10 min which was very close to the resistivity value of bulk Ag (1.58 µΩ cm). Mechanical flexibility of the printed electronics with the Ag NP-based ink on paper substrates was investigated. The prints on the art coated paper exhibited better flexibility compared to that on the photopaper. This might be attributed to the surface coating composition, surface morphology of the paper, and their corresponding ink absorption property.

RESUMO

Three-arm star azopyridinium salts self-organize into various morphologies in water/organic mixed solvents. Interesting AIE and self-assembling features are observed due to the strong interaction of the azopyridinium moieties with the highly polar H2 O molecules causing the salts to aggregate, which restricts the molecular motion and induces the fluorescence.

RESUMO

A chiral nematic liquid crystal-photopolymerizable monomer-chiral azobenzene compound composite was prepared and then polymerized under UV irradiation. The reflection wavelength of the composite can be extended to cover the 1000-2400 nm range and also be adjusted to the visible light region by controlling the concentration of chiral compounds.
