RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between different types of laminectomy extension and spinal cord injury subsequent to acute spinal shorting after 3-column osteotomy in living goat model. METHODS: A total of 18 healthy goats were selected, and a procedure of bivertebral column resections and total laminectomy of T13 and L1 was completed followed by different laminectomy extensions under the somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) monitoring. The samples were divided into three groups according to types of subsequent laminectomy extension. In the first group (enlarged resection of upper lamina group), laminectomy extension was performed on 10 mm caudal to T12; in the second group (equidistant enlarged resection of upper and lower lamina group), laminectomy extension was performed on 5 mm caudal to T12 and 5 mm cranial to L2 simultaneously; and in the third group (enlarged resection of lower lamina group), laminectomy extension was performed on 10 mm cranial to L2. The SSEP measured after vertebral resection was set as the baseline, and the SSEP decreased by 50% from the baseline amplitude and/or delayed by 10% relative to the baseline peak latency was set as positive results, which indicated spinal cord injury. Spinal column was gradually shortened until the SSEP monitoring just did not show a positive result. The shortened distance (ΔH) and the changed angle of the spinal cord buckling (Δα) were measured in each group. Neurologic function was recorded by the Tarlov scores at 2 days after the surgery. RESULTS: The safe shortening distances of three groups were 38.6 ± 1.2 mm, 41.5 ± 0.7 mm, 43.7 ± 0.8 mm, respectively; the corresponding changed angles of the spinal cord buckling were 62.8 ± 6.9°, 82.8 ± 7.5°, and 98.5 ± 7.0°. Significant differences of ΔH and Δα were found among the three groups by LSD multiple comparison test (P < 0.05). Strong correlation between ΔH and Δα was shown in each group by Pearson's correlation test. CONCLUSIONS: Different laminectomy extensions after 3-column osteotomy have different effects on the prevention of SCI caused by acute spinal shortening. The enlarged resection of lower lamina is superior to equidistant enlarged resection of upper and lower laminas which is superior to enlarged resection of upper lamina in preventing SCI. PURPOSE: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or motor neuron disease is an adult-onset progressive neurodegenerative disorder. ALS-CSF has been shown to produce toxic effects on motor neuron cells like aberrant neurofilament phosphorylation and morphological alterations of nuclear and soma size. Our current study was designed to investigate the neuroprotective role of platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) in reverting the adverse effects produced by ALS-CSF. METHODS: Our present study was carried out to determine the restorative potential of PDGF on the toxic effects of ALS-CSF on NSC motor neuron cells from patients. Therefore the cells were divided in to three groups: (a) normal control (NC) - the cells were not exposed to ALS-CSF; (b) ALS group - the cells were exposed to ALS-CSF; (c) NALS group - the cells were exposed to non ALS CSF. Further each of these groups was supplemented with PDGF. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: We observed that the mean area of nucleus and cell soma of the differentiated NSC motor neuron cells was significantly reduced in the cells exposed to ALS-CSF. We also observed that subsequent treatment with PDGF restored the soma area and nucleus of the ALS-CSF exposed cells significantly. Taken together, we show that supplementation with PDGF restores the morphological changes induced by ALS-CSF and PDGF may play a significant role in protecting motor neurons from apoptosis in ALS and thereby it promoting the cell survival.

This paper describes a strategy of fabricating a new class of nano hybrid particles in terms of the "nanocages" of reactive molecular matrices/networks. The concept is to design molecular matrices functionalized with particular reactive groups, which can on-site synthesize and fix nanoparticles at the designated positions of the molecular networks. The cages of the molecular networks impose the confinement and protection to the nanoparticles so that the size and the stability of nano hybrid particles can be better controlled. To this end, polyamide network polymers (PNP) were synthesized and adopted as the reactive molecular cages for the control of silver nanoparticles formation. It follows that the silver nano hybrid particles fabricated by this method have an average diameter of 4.34 nm much smaller than any other or similar methods ie by a hyperbranched polyamide polymer (HB-PA). As per our design, the size of the silver nano hybrid particles can also be tuned by controlling the molar ratio between silver ions and the functional groups in the polymeric matrices. The silver nano hybrid particles reveal the substantially enhanced stability in aqueous solutions, which gives rise to the long stable performance of localized surface plasmon resonance. As the nano hybrid particles display long eminent nanoeffects, they exert broad implications for a wide range of applications such as biomedicine, catalysis, and optoelectronics.

OBJECTIVE: To design ABC damage variable and positioning system for acetabular fracture and explore the feasibility and clinical practical value of the system through the multi-center analysis of 1122 acetabular fractures. METHODS: According to acetabular three-column conception, and pelvic ring lesions damage direction caused by acetabular fracture domino effect and injury degree of proximal femur joint, it defined class A as any column acetabular fracture; class B as any two-column acetabular fracture; class C as front, dome and posterior mixture acetabular fracture. Lower case English letters a, m, p represented front, dome, posterior fracture, respectively. Acetabular damage variables: 1 was simple displaced fractures; 2 was comminuted fractures; 3 was compression fractures. Pelvic ring lesions damage variables: alpha was sacroiliac joints or sacroiliac fracture horizontal separation deflection; beta was sacroiliac joints or sacroiliac fracture vertical separation deflection; gamma was pubic symphysis separation/superior and inferior ramus of pubis fracture deflection; alpha beta gamma delta was compound floating damage. Proximal humerus joint damage variables: I was femoral head fracture; II was femoral neck fracture; II was intertrochanteric fractures of femur; IV was I to III compound fracture. The ABC damage variable positioning system for acetabular fracture was made up by the above-mentioned variables. The statistics from March 1997 to February 2010 showed 1122 cases acetabular fractures with 18 cases of double side acetabular fracture and 1140 cases of acetabular fractures. The pelvics anterior-posterior view, ilium and obturator oblique view, and 2/3D-CT materials were analyzed and researched. RESULTS: Each damage variables distribution situation in 1140 cases of acetabular fracture involved A in 237 cases (20.8%), B in 605 cases (53.1%), C in 298 cases (26.1%);front column fracture in 808 cases(70.9%), dome fracture in 507 cases (44.5%), posterior fracture in 1026 cases (90%). Acetabular variables: variabe 1 in 203 cases of simple displaced fracture (17.8%); variabe 2 in 516 cases of comminuted fracture(45.3%); variabe 3 in 421 cases of compression fracture (36.9%); 249 cases of pelvic ring lesions damage (21.8%), 75 cases femoral head fracture (6.6%); 18 cases of double side acetabular fracture and relative pelvic ring and proximal humerus joint variables (1.58%). Key part and curative effect elements of 1140 cases acetabular fracture: 507 cases of dome or posterior acetabular fracture (44.5%); 421 cases of compression fracture (36.9%); 249 cases of pelvic ring variables (21.8%); 75 cases of proximal humerus joint variables (6.6%); 486 cases of simple Aa/pl/2,Bapl/2 acetabular fracture (42.6% ). CONCLUSION: Compression fracture, especially defected compression fracture, takes important part in acetabular damage variables, and also presents that acetabular fracture with pelvic ring and proximal femoral damage variables are not rare at all. The relationship of the acetabular fracture damage variables, and its percentage shows the key points and elements in clinical treatment: weight-bearing to dome accounts for 44.5%; compression to defects account for 36.9%, pelvic ring to float accounts for 21.8%; dome fracture to double side fracture account for 6.6%. The system has significant guiding effects on clinic in terms of evaluation of injury severity, anatomic localization, difficulty index, alternative strategy, operative approach, effect of treatment,and prognosis. And the most important thing is that the system creates the comparison of damage variables in same type of fracture and the communication of homo-language and explores a new method.

RESUMO

Study of the morphology, aggregation structure and properties of Bombyx mori silk treated by low temperature oxygen plasma showed that slight flutes appeared on the surface of Bombyx mori silk fiber and that its surface structure changed after plasma treatment. The conformation also changed and crystalline degree decreased. The stannic filling rate of treated fiber was improved. Because of etching, the weight of the fiber decreased but the breaking strength changed little after short-time treatment.
