RESUMO

The ICARUS collaboration employed the 760-ton T600 detector in a successful 3-year physics run at the underground LNGS laboratory, performing a sensitive search for LSND-like anomalous νe appearance in the CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso beam, which contributed to the constraints on the allowed neutrino oscillation parameters to a narrow region around 1 eV2. After a significant overhaul at CERN, the T600 detector has been installed at Fermilab. In 2020 the cryogenic commissioning began with detector cool down, liquid argon filling and recirculation. ICARUS then started its operations collecting the first neutrino events from the booster neutrino beam (BNB) and the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam off-axis, which were used to test the ICARUS event selection, reconstruction and analysis algorithms. ICARUS successfully completed its commissioning phase in June 2022. The first goal of the ICARUS data taking will be a study to either confirm or refute the claim by Neutrino-4 short-baseline reactor experiment. ICARUS will also perform measurement of neutrino cross sections with the NuMI beam and several Beyond Standard Model searches. After the first year of operations, ICARUS will search for evidence of sterile neutrinos jointly with the Short-Baseline Near Detector, within the Short-Baseline Neutrino program. In this paper, the main activities carried out during the overhauling and installation phases are highlighted. Preliminary technical results from the ICARUS commissioning data with the BNB and NuMI beams are presented both in terms of performance of all ICARUS subsystems and of capability to select and reconstruct neutrino events.

A new mathematical framework is proposed for characterizing the coherent motion of fluctuations around a mean turbulent channel flow. We search for statistically invariant coherent solutions of the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations written in a perturbative form with respect to the turbulent mean flow, using a suitable approximation of the Reynolds stress tensor. This is achieved by setting up a continuation procedure of known solutions of the perturbative Navier-Stokes equations, based on the continuous increase of the turbulent eddy viscosity towards its turbulent value. The recovered solutions, being sustained only in the presence of the Reynolds stress tensor, are representative of the statistically coherent motion of turbulent flows. For small friction Reynolds number and/or domain size, the statistically invariant motion is almost identical to the corresponding invariant solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. Whereas, for sufficiently large friction number and/or domain size, it considerably departs from the starting invariant solution of the Navier-Stokes equations, presenting spatial structures, main wavelengths and scaling very close to those characterizing both large- and small-scale motion of turbulent channel flows. RESUMO

We report the first (in)elastic scattering measurement of ^{25}Al+p with the capability to select and measure in a broad energy range the proton resonances in ^{26}Si contributing to the ^{22}Mg(α,p) reaction at type I x-ray burst energies. We measured spin-parities of four resonances above the α threshold of ^{26}Si that are found to strongly impact the ^{22}Mg(α,p) rate. The new rate advances a state-of-the-art model to remarkably reproduce light curves of the GS 1826-24 clocked burster with mean deviation <9% and permits us to discover a strong correlation between the He abundance in the accreting envelope of the photospheric radius expansion burster and the dominance of ^{22}Mg(α,p) branch.

Carbon burning powers scenarios that influence the fate of stars, such as the late evolutionary stages of massive stars 1 (exceeding eight solar masses) and superbursts from accreting neutron stars2,3. It proceeds through the 12C + 12C fusion reactions that produce an alpha particle and neon-20 or a proton and sodium-23-that is, 12C(12C, α)20Ne and 12C(12C, p)23Na-at temperatures greater than 0.4 × 109 kelvin, corresponding to astrophysical energies exceeding a megaelectronvolt, at which such nuclear reactions are more likely to occur in stars. The cross-sections 4 for those carbon fusion reactions (probabilities that are required to calculate the rate of the reactions) have hitherto not been measured at the Gamow peaks 4 below 2 megaelectronvolts because of exponential suppression arising from the Coulomb barrier. The reference rate 5 at temperatures below 1.2 × 109 kelvin relies on extrapolations that ignore the effects of possible low-lying resonances. Here we report the measurement of the 12C(12C, α0,1)20Ne and 12C(12C, p0,1)23Na reaction rates (where the subscripts 0 and 1 stand for the ground and first excited states of 20Ne and 23Na, respectively) at centre-of-mass energies from 2.7 to 0.8 megaelectronvolts using the Trojan Horse method6,7 and the deuteron in 14N. The cross-sections deduced exhibit several resonances that are responsible for very large increases of the reaction rate at relevant temperatures. In particular, around 5 × 108 kelvin, the reaction rate is boosted to more than 25 times larger than the reference value 5 . This finding may have implications such as lowering the temperatures and densities 8 required for the ignition of carbon burning in massive stars and decreasing the superburst ignition depth in accreting neutron stars to reconcile observations with theoretical models 3 .

RESUMO

The decay path of the Hoyle state in ^{12}C (E_{x}=7.654 MeV) has been studied with the ^{14}N(d,α_{2})^{12}C(7.654) reaction induced at 10.5 MeV. High resolution invariant mass spectroscopy techniques have allowed us to unambiguously disentangle direct and sequential decays of the state passing through the ground state of ^{8}Be. Thanks to the almost total absence of background and the attained resolution, a fully sequential decay contribution to the width of the state has been observed. The direct decay width is negligible, with an upper limit of 0.043% (95% C.L.). The precision of this result is about a factor 5 higher than previous studies. This has significant implications on nuclear structure, as it provides constraints to 3α cluster model calculations, where higher precision limits are needed.

Vitamin D deficiency rickets in infants attributable to inadeguate vitamin D intake and decreased exposure to sunligh continue to be reported in the United States and other Western Countries. The American Academy of Pediatrics raccomend that all infants, children and adolescent have a minumin intake of 400 UI of vitamin D per day. We describe a case of deficiency-related rickets in two moroccan twins aged 10 months.

RESUMO

Recent studies have suggested that in some cases transition can be triggered by some purely nonlinear mechanisms. Here we aim at verifying such an hypothesis, looking for a localized perturbation able to lead a boundary-layer flow to a chaotic state, following a nonlinear route. Nonlinear optimal localized perturbations have been computed by means of an energy optimization which includes the nonlinear terms of the Navier-Stokes equations. Such perturbations lie on the turbulent side of the laminar-turbulent boundary, whereas, for the same value of the initial energy, their linear counterparts do not. The evolution of these perturbations toward a turbulent flow involves the presence of streamwise-inclined vortices at short times and of hairpin structures prior to breakdown.

RESUMO

The 18O(p,alpha)15N reaction is of primary importance in several astrophysical scenarios, including fluorine nucleosynthesis inside asymptotic giant branch stars as well as oxygen and nitrogen isotopic ratios in meteorite grains. Thus the indirect measurement of the low energy region of the 18O(p,alpha)15N reaction has been performed to reduce the nuclear uncertainty on theoretical predictions. In particular the strength of the 20 and 90 keV resonances has been deduced and the change in the reaction rate evaluated.

RESUMO

Off-energy-shell effects in p - p scattering have been investigated at p - p relative energies from 600 down to 80 keV applying the Trojan horse method (THM) to the p + d --> p + p + n reaction at 5 MeV. In contrast with the on-energy-shell case, no Coulomb-nuclear interference minimum has been found in the extracted THM p - p cross section, due to the suppression of the Coulomb amplitude as predicted by the half-off-energy shell calculations. This hypothesis is strengthened by the agreement between THM p - p data and calculated on-energy-shell n + n, n + p and nuclear p + p cross sections.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate comprehensive neuropsychological outcome, disabilities in daily life and individual recovery processes in a case of anoxic encephalopathy. DESIGN: A 9-year-old child's functional outcome after anoxic coma was evaluated in a follow-up study with assessments at 5, 9 and 12 months post-injury. A comprehensive neuropsychological protocol was administered. Qualitative methods of analysis and ecological observation were associated with standard and non-standard quantitative measures. RESULTS: The child presented pervasive functional deficits with prevalence of gnosic, praxic and self-regulatory dysfunction. Dissociated functional recovery was documented in 12 months time. Improvement of self-regulatory abilities was likely a 'propeller' of global system re-organization. CONCLUSION: A descriptive longitudinal study of functional and ecological behavioural changes after anoxic coma provides insight into the re-adaptation processes in the brain connected to post-lesion ecological and training experiences. Contextual factors and their relations to functional improvements deserve further study.

The insoluble organic fraction isolated from rice-hulls residues and animal fecal matter mixture is sulphonated in liquid SO3 at 200 degrees C to a water soluble sulphonate (III). III is compared to the sulphonate (IV) obtained from the same mix after composting. Both products have been found to contain mixtures of molecules with close molecular weight. These molecules consist of a central cicloaliphatic cluster with peripheral pending aromatic chains. III and IV appear to have the same sulphonation degree. However, the latter contains higher concentrations of cicloaliphatic fragments and of amide, phenol and ether bonds, but less carboxylic and amine functional groups. These differences may be reasonably traced back to the starting materials. By comparison with commercial lignosulphonates derived from the paper and pulp industry, the above arylsulphonates are likely candidates for a variety of applications in the chemical industry and in agriculture. We conclude that sulphonation, even under the drastic experimental conditions of this work, does not seem to erase the memory of the parent matter structure. This reaction is capable of upgrading recalcitrant organic matter in vegetable waste residues to an interesting variety of lignosulphonates.

The presence of cachexia as defined by a series of clinical symptoms, such as anorexia, weight loss, muscular atrophy, tissue wasting, altered organ function, is frequently observed in cancer and makes a decisive contribution to morbidity and mortality. The onset of neoplastic cachexia is characterized by two events: the presence of primary or secondary anorexia and alterations of the host's intermediate metabolism. Among the most frequent metabolic alterations described in cancer patients is an absolute or relative increase in basal energy consumption with lack of adaptation to fasting. The causes of increased energy consumption in cancer patients are still not clear. Numerous studies on glucose, fat and protein metabolism induced by cancer have significantly contributed to our understanding of the phenomenon. The main alterations of the glucose metabolism are increased glucose turnover and reduced peripheral utilization, both of which probably depend on the presence of the tumour, as shown by their normalization after treatment. Increased gluconeogenesis, from lactate and from gluconeogenetic AA, is the main factor responsible for increased glucose turnover. The main alterations of the fat metabolism are increased mobilization of lipids from adipose tissues, reduced use of exogenous triglycerides and increased oxidation of free fatty acids that cannot be suppressed by glucose. The main alterations of protein metabolism are increased protein turnover with reduced synthesis and increased degradation of muscular proteins and increased hepatic protein synthesis. Knowledge of the pathogenesis of neoplastic cachexia represents a valuable aid for its effective prevention and treatment.
