RESUMO
In vaginal exfoliative cytology, the routine Papanicolaou and Shorr's staining procedures do not reliably indicate the post-ovulatory phase. An experimental study of 100 female albino rats and a clinical study of 190 women was initiated to establish an easier method for identifying the post-ovulatory phase. It was found that the appearance of intracytoplasmic lipid granules in vaginal cells stained by Oil Red 0 may serve as a sensitive indicator of the post-ovulatory phase.

Urinary cytology is a good test for estimation of woman's hormonal situation. In a previous paper, the authors showed an "estrogenic" like effect of digitalin, in urocytograms of post-menopausical women. In the present report, the urocytograms of 139 men, 17 to 84 years old, without any urinary disease and treated or not by digitalin, are studied. Normal urinary cytology in the adult and its modifications under digitalin treatment are shown.

Female Albino Rats exposed to permanent light, have polycystic and anovulatory ovaries, with a vaginal cytology composed of cornified cells (persistent estrus) and a plasmatic hyperandrogenia. These structural modifications are similar to those of women affected by Stein-Leventhal's syndrome. The possible role of regulation of the pineal gland is considered.
