RESUMO

Infantile digital fibromatosis (IDF) is a form of fibromatosis usually restricted to childhood. Typically occuring on fingers and toes of children and rarely in the oral cavity [Canioni et al. Pathol. Res. Pract. 187 (1991) 886] and in adults [Viale et al. Histopathology 12 (1998) 415]. It was first described by Reye [Arch. Pathol. Lab. Med. 80 (1965) 228]. IDF (Reyes tumour) is a rarely encountered, non malignant tumour of children. The lesions may be multiple and are either present at birth or appear during the first 2 years of life and are prone for recurrence after removal. Recognition is important as they often regress spontaneously if left alone [Ishi et al. Br. J. Dermatol. 121 (1989) 129]. We report here a care of IDF on right second toe, which was congenital in origin and was clinically similar to keloid.

RESUMO

Three hundred and nine children of burns injuries treated over last 10 years (1989-1998) in Kasturba Hospital, Manipal (India) were studied retrospectively and were analysed for incidence, severity, extent, causes, risk factors and overall mortality. Children of age < 5 years were affected more than children of age > 5 years (76.1 vs. 23.9%). Females were affected more than males (74.1 vs. 25.9%). Most of the children received burn injuries in the range of 0 to 20% BSA (63.1%). Scald (72.5%) followed by flame (22.7%) and electrical burn (3.2%) were most common cause of burn injuries. Overall paediatric burn mortality was 7.4%.

RESUMO

We report a case in which quick freeze injury occurred to both hands by helium vapour at extremely low temperatures. At the time of injury the victim was wearing protective gloves which were removed quickly after the accident. This prompt removal of gloves reduced the depth and severity of the injury. Initially he was treated by rapid thawing by immersing the hands in luke warm water (37 degrees C) and administering heparin by drip to prevent microvascular thrombosis. Delayed skin grafting was performed with good functional recovery. The circumstances accompanying this injury and preventive measures are discussed.
