RESUMO

ABSTRACT: This study explores the perception of female college students in South Korea regarding cosmetic surgery and its side effects.Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 28 female college students over a period of 4 months, starting in October 2019. All participants were female college students who had not undergone cosmetic surgery. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively, using conventional content analysis.Four categories and 13 subcategories were extracted from 112 meaningful codes reflecting perceptions related to cosmetic surgery and its associated side effects. The 4 categories that emerged in the study were: "reaction to the side effects of cosmetic surgery", "reasons for cosmetic surgery", "prospects of the participant's own cosmetic surgery", and "prerequisites for decision-making regarding cosmetic surgery".The results of this study could be used as reference material by surgeons to ensure safer cosmetic surgeries. A sufficient consideration period and patient education prior to selective cosmetic surgery would minimize patient complaints and expand the base of safe cosmetic surgery.

RESUMO

This study aimed to develop a grounded theory regarding the associations between factors identified in the adaptation process of 11 fathers of multicultural families. Participants were recruited purposively and data were collected through in-depth interviews. Data analysis was performed alongside data collection, following Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory method. The following 11 categories were derived from the data: (1) a reluctantly formed multicultural family, (2) finding happiness amid confusion, (3) cultural differences, (4) economic difficulties, (5) social prejudice and alienation, (6) restrictions on the use of local services, (7) facing multiple obstacles, (8) people who provided strength and support, (9) accepting differences and moving forward, (10) growth with family, and (11) being made to stay. The core category was identified as "struggling to protect the family with a double burden." This theory described the adaptation process of being a father in a multicultural family and participants' reactions to the circumstances around it. Based on this theory, health policies should be developed to support not only the expansion of medical facilities in island and rural areas but also the activation of self-help groups. Future research should include the development of web-based prenatal management and parental education in immigrants' native languages.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This qualitative study aimed to develop a substantive theory of the process of adaptation to motherhood in Central Asian-Korean immigrants to Korea. METHODS: Individual, in-depth interviews were conducted from July to September 2017, with 18 women who emigrated of Korean ethnicity from Central Asia to Korea, and took care of their baby for at least a year after their first delivery in Korea. The interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data from the transcriptions were analyzed through Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory method, and data analysis was conducted simultaneously with data collection. RESULTS: As a result of categorizing the interview data through the process of open coding, 10 categories, with 31 subcategories and 102 concepts were drawn, and "growth as a Central Asian-Korean mother in an unfamiliar, historical hometown" was found to be the core category of the process of adaptation to motherhood in Central Asian-Korean immigrants to Korea. CONCLUSION: A characteristic of the process of adaptation to motherhood in Central Asian-Korean immigrants to Korea, drawn from this study, is that it differs according to the level of initiative to carry out interaction strategies, and the use of various supportive social resources. The findings indicate the need for Medicare eligibility adjustment for antenatal care, the extension of the visa renewal period during childbirth, the development of web- or mobile application-based educational programs in Russian language, and the establishment of integrated visiting healthcare services, community service resources, and policy support to enable these women to utilize various supportive social resources.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Rates of plastic surgery procedures have increased dramatically over the past several decades, especially for the women in South Korea. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the subjective experience of South Korean women in their twenties and thirties with facial plastic surgery (FPS) side effects. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Seven women who have suffered from FPS side effects participated in this study. Data were collected from July to September 2015 through individual in-depth interviews using open-ended questions and analyzed using Colaizzi's method, which is a Husserlian phenomenological approach. RESULTS: Six themes, and 25 subthemes, were found. Major themes were "choosing FPS to gain a new self", "facing an unintended self", "trying to accept a changed self", "making efforts to overcome the situation", "coming to know a new world", and "pursuing a new lifestyle". CONCLUSION: This study raises social awareness on the risk of plastic surgery side effects, which could prevent unnecessary plastic surgery. It also suggests the need for a deeper understanding of women's biopsychosocial suffering from plastic surgery side effects.

RESUMO

People with mental illness suffer from stigma in addition to the illness itself; their families also suffer from the stigma of having a family member with a mental illness. The aim of the present study was to explore the lived experiences of the family stigma among mothers of mentally ill children in South Korea. The work was qualitative in nature; we used the phenomenological method of Colaizzi. Mothers with an adult child enrolled as mentally ill patients in the Mental Health Centre of K Province in South Korea were eligible for inclusion. FINDINGS: Six themes emerged; these were being ashamed, feeling of being ignored, isolating oneself from social relationships, becoming a mentally sick person, living like a guilty person, and becoming a part of the socially weak. The study contributes to our understanding of stigma experienced by family members in a socio-cultural context and will aid in the development of culturally appropriate strategies for the destigmatization of families of mentally ill persons.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This methodological study was conducted to develop and test a cultural competence scale for nursing students. METHODS: Based on the five constructs of cultural competency identified in the conceptual analysis of Suh, 76 items for the tool were derived initially. These items were reduced to 58 items after content validity tests (two times) by 6 multicultural experts. Data collected from 526 nursing students were utilized to test the validity and reliability of the preliminary tool. Item analysis, factor analysis, Pearson correlation coefficients, and Cronbach's alpha were used for the analysis. RESULTS: Twenty-seven items were selected for the final scale, and categorized into 5 factors explaining 62.1% of the total variance. Cronbach's alpha was .91 and the reliability of the subscales ranged from .76 to .91. Criterion validity between the developed tool and empathy (r=.26, p<.001) was significant. CONCLUSION: The results show that this scale can provide scientific and empirical data when evaluating the effectiveness of school curriculums or multicultural empowerment programs regarding cultural competence of nursing students.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this descriptive study was to assess levels of stress, coping style, and nursing needs for hospitalized pregnant women diagnosed with preterm labor. METHODS: Data were collected from 125 pregnant women aged between 20 and 40 years and diagnosed with preterm labor by OBGY units at 3 hospitals. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, t-test, and ANOVA with Scheffe test. RESULTS: The level of stress among women was an average of 2.13 out of 4 points, the level of coping style was an average of 2.66, and nursing needs was an average of 2.83 out of 4 points. The level of stress was significantly different by job, length of hospital stay, type of hospital, and history of admission at obstetric unit. The level of coping style was significantly different by age and monthly income. The level of nursing needs was significantly different by type of hospital. Higher level of stress and coping style were related to higher level of nursing needs. There was no significant correlation between stress and coping style. CONCLUSION: The result showed the importance of nursing intervention dealing with stress, coping style and nursing needs for women with preterm labor. Nurses need to provide nursing interventions to reduce the stress, to strengthen the coping style, and to satisfy the nursing needs for pregnant women hospitalized due to preterm labor.

RESUMO

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the effect of an individualised education programme on asthma control, inhaler use, asthma knowledge and health-related quality of life among poorly compliant adult Korean patients with asthma. BACKGROUND: Previous studies show that proper educational strategies are necessary to increase asthma knowledge and skills to improve patients' self-management and health-related quality of life. DESIGN: A one-group quasi-experimental design with repeated measurements. METHODS: Adult patients with asthma (n = 101) were recruited from University hospital located in K City, Korea. Three interventions consisting of 30-minute sessions of individualised education were provided by an education team. Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR), daily record card (DRC) scores, skill scores for use of metered dose inhaler, level of asthma knowledge and health-related quality of life scores were obtained before the intervention and 2-4 and 4-8 weeks after the intervention. One-way repeated measures analysis of variance was used to identify the effect of the education programme on the dependent variables. RESULTS: Peak expiratory flow rate, DRC scores, inhaler using skill scores and health-related quality of life scores benefitted from intervention, whereas knowledge score did not. The effect on the PEFR and DRC score was sustained, with that of inhaler use skill increased over time from 4-8 weeks. However, the health-related quality of life effect was not sustained for 4-8 weeks after the intervention. CONCLUSIONS: Repetitive education and innovative education methods may be needed to improve and to maintain pulmonary function, symptom control, asthma knowledge and health-related quality of life of poorly compliant adult Korean patients with asthma. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: This study confirmed the importance of education for patients suffering from asthma in managing their symptoms and promoting their quality of life.
