RESUMO

The aim of the study was to verify a relationship between P53 protein expression and prognosis in laryngeal cancer. P53 protein levels were studied by immunohistochemical staining of 80 primary laryngeal SCC. Forty five tumours (56.3%) had a positive staining for P53 protein. There was no correlation between P53 overexpression and disease-free survival. No prognostic significance of P53 protein expression in laryngeal cancer was found.

RESUMO

An association between cell adhesion molecules expression in neoplastic tissues and cancer progression has been the focus of many recent studies. In certain tumours down-regulation of CD44 expression has been linked to the poor prognosis. The aim of the study was to evaluate CD44 expression and to determine the correlation between CD44 expression and the clinicopathological features of laryngeal cancer. The group consisted of 80 patients with primary laryngeal cancer. Tissue samples were taken from removed tumour mass during surgical treatment, CD44 expression was assessed by immunohistochemical method. The down-regulation of CD44 expression significantly correlated with a shorter disease-free survival (p<0.05). Our results suggest that CD44 expression may be useful as a prognostic marker in laryngeal cancer.

RESUMO

The retrospective analysis of 238 patients treated because of laryngeal cancer was performed to examine the results of modified radical neck dissection. Authors estimated the presence of nodal metastases in clinically negative and clinically positive neck. Evaluation of the metastatic node levels was performed.

RESUMO

People's style of lives, their diet and smoking and alcohol intaking are estimated to be cause of 80% of all malignant neoplasms. 736 secondary school students fulfilled a survey to assess their knowledge of neoplasmatic disease. The group was divided in two subsets. The first one were teenagers without a neoplasm in their family (511--69.4%), the other were with a neoplasmatic disease in the family (225--30.6%). The second group had the more complex knowledge of neoplasms. About 6% prefer other than conventional methods of cancer treatment. 1.5% find a neoplasm as an infectious disease. 20% of the teenagers do not know any possibilities of neoplasm prevention.

RESUMO

The authors present the results of surgical treatment of secretory otitis media by means of drainage of tympanic cavity. The ventilation tubes used were made of Polish plastic Tarflen. The control assessments were carried out from 6 months to 6 years after the surgery, 58 children were studied, 49 of them had control examination. The improvement in hearing was found in 65 per cent of the patients. The appearance of tympanic membrane after the surgery was as follows: normal in 38.8%, retraction pockets in 10.2%, tympanosclerosis in 8.2%, secretory fluid in 6.1%, perforation of the tympanic membrane in 4.1%.

RESUMO

103 patients with cancer of the larynx treated with partial laryngectomy were presented. Voice quality before and after surgery was compared. Voice was analysed by subjective and objective-spectrographic methods. Partial laryngectomies consisted of: vertical, horizontal and supraglottic subtotal procedures. The least dysphony was found in horizontal laryngectomy, the biggest--in supraglottic subtotal laryngectomy.

RESUMO

Early identification of hearing impairment in children is a major problem for clinical research and development. Transient click evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) have been shown to be a useful test of hearing impairment, especially when used for infant screening. The purpose of this study was evaluation of transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) for the two-stage screening of infant hearing. The first stage was measurement of otoacoustic emissions. TEOAE were performed in 200 infants. 17.5% of the children exhibited risk factors for hearing impairment. Those failing the second stage proceeded to auditory brain-stem response (ABR). The absence of TEOAE in both ears in 2 children was detected by ABR. The data obtained show that two stage newborn hearing screening is practicable, effective, low-cost and safe.

RESUMO

The quality of voice was examined in 18 patients with larynx carcinoma before and after chordectomy. Subjective and objective (spectrographic) methods were applied. The larynx was examined in indirect laryngoscopy and videostroboscopy. Significant voice pathology was found in patients before surgery when compared with norm. Early phoniatric rehabilitation helped to achieve subjective improvement of voice quality in patients after surgery.

RESUMO

Voice quality was assessed in 37 patients with cancer of the larynx before and after supraglottic surgery. Subjective and objective spectrography method were applied to evaluate dysphony. A change of the voice colour was found, which was manifested in spectrography by decrease of formant levels, specially F3 and F4. Dysphagia and longer tracheostomy were temporary complications after the surgery, and caused later beginning of phoniatric rehabilitation.

RESUMO

Adipose myringoplasty is presented as a simple and effective technique in managing tympanic membrane perforations. A review of 34 fat plug myringoplasties performed in 28 patients with drum perforations over a 4-year period was done. Twenty-two myringoplasties were postinflammatory, five--posttraumatic and three--postinflammatory in temporalis fascia. Criteria for selection, operative technique and results are discussed.

RESUMO

With the use of planimetry, and ears lateral projection X-ray pictures, the size of temporal bones pneumatization surfaces was measured 88 ears with otosclerosis and 88 healthy ears were examined. The degree of pneumatization in the two groups was compared. Statistically significantly highly pneumatization was found in the group of ears with otosclerosis.

RESUMO

The records of 41 patients with tumours of the parotid gland treated in ORL Clinic in Bialystok from 1990-1995. Were retrospectively reviewed. Malignant tumours constituted 11.5% of all tumours. The most common benign tumour was pleomorphic adenoma. Superficial or total parotidectomy was used as the method of treatment. The incidence of facial nerve dysfunction was 4.87%. Only 4.87% of patients developed Frey's syndrome.
