RESUMO

Upon forming, the intensity or thickness of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) in a Li-ion battery (LIB) evolves to various states depending on the cell materials and operation conditions. Despite a crucial role in comprehending the behaviors of an LIB, its quantitative measure is far from satisfactory mainly because of the undue complexity of the concentration profiles of the comprising chemical species. Here, we calculate the depth profiles of atomic mole fractions of C and F and their ratio as RC/F = C/F of graphite anodes for LIBs in comparison to an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) experiment. To this end, we take a differential equation approach to dC/dt*, where t* is the reduced XPS etching time for depth. As a result, the respective analytical expression derived for C, F, and RC/F(t*) is verified to accurately account for the experiment. Moreover, we show that RC/F(t*) in the j state can be practically expressed in Rj(t*)≃αj(t*)1/γ+ßj, where γ is a constant for a given anode. Based on this, we suggest ξj* = (αi + ßi - ßj)/αj as a measure of the SEI thickness evolution from the i to j state in terms of the cycle number. As an intriguing finding, the SEI thickness evolves up to about 3 times that of its initial state, beyond which it does not appear to grow any more.

RESUMO

Sensory "aftereffects" are a subgroup of sensory illusions that can be defined as an illusory phenomenon triggered after prolonged exposure to a given sensory inducer. These phenomena are interesting because they can provide insights into the mechanisms of perception. In auditory modality, there is a special interest in the so-called "Zwicker tone" (ZT), an auditory aftereffect triggered after the presentation of a notched noise (NN, broadband noise with a missing frequency band). The ZT has been considered a plausible model of a specific tinnitus subtype since it presents some key characteristics in common with tinnitus. Indeed, both the tinnitus percept and ZT can be triggered by a relative "sensory deprivation," and their pitch corresponds to the frequency region that has been sensory deprived. The effects of a NN presentation on the central auditory system are still barely investigated, and the mechanisms of the ZT are elusive. In this study, we analyzed the laminar structure of the neural activity in the primary cortex of anesthetized and awake guinea pigs during and after white noise (WN) and NN stimulation. We found significantly increased offset responses, in terms of both spiking activity and local field potential amplitude, after NN compared with WN presentation. The offset responses were circumscribed to the granular and upper infragranular layers (input layers) and were maximal when the neuron's best frequency was within or near the missing frequency band. The mechanisms of the offset response and its putative link with the ZT are discussed.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Notched noise (white noise with embedded spectral gap) causes significant excitatory offset responses in the auditory cortex of awake and anesthetized guinea pigs. The largest offset responses were located in the infragranular/granular layers, and current source density analysis revealed that offset responses were associated with an early current sink localized in the upper infragranular layers. We discuss the possibility that the offset responses might be associated with an auditory phantom percept (Zwicker tone).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aims to examine the characteristics and behavioral patterns of patients with chronic conditions behind their parallel use of the conventional medicine (CM) and the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) that includes traditional Korean Medicine (KM). METHODS: This cross-sectional study used the self-administered anonymous survey method to obtain the results from inpatients who were staying in three hospitals in Gyeongnam province in Korea. RESULTS: Of the 423 participants surveyed, 334 participants (79.0%) used some form of CAM among which KM therapies were the most common modalities. The results of a logistic regression analysis showed that the parallel use pattern was most apparent in the groups aged over 40. Patients with hypertension or joint diseases were seen to have higher propensity to show the parallel use patterns, whereas patients with diabetes were not. In addition, many sociodemographic and health-related characteristics are related to the patterns of the parallel use of CAM and CM. CONCLUSION: In the rural area of Korea, most inpatients who used CM for the management of chronic conditions used CAM in parallel. KM was the most common in CAM modalities, and the aspect of parallel use varied according to the disease conditions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sufentanil is a potent opioid analgesic frequently used in clinical anesthesia. Double-lumen endobronchial intubation induces profound cardiovascular responses in comparison with ordinary endotracheal intubation because of the larger tube diameter and direct irritation of the carina. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the effective bolus dose of sufentanil to attenuate hemodynamic changes in response to laryngoscopic double-lumen endobronchial intubation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We randomly assigned 72 patients aged 18 - 65 years and with an American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status of 1 or 2 to one of four sufentanil dose groups: NS, S0.1, S0.2, or S0.3. The respective doses for the groups were as follows: normal saline, 0.1 mcg/kg of sufentanil, 0.2 mcg/kg of sufentanil, and 0.3 mcg/kg of sufentanil. Blood pressure and heart rate were recorded during the pre-anesthesia period at baseline, pre-intubation, immediate post-intubation, and every minute during 5 minutes after intubation. RESULTS: Baseline mean arterial pressures in the NS, S0.1, S0.2, and S0.3 groups were 89.8 ± 12.1, 89.2 ± 10.9, 88.8 ± 13.6, and 90.7 ± 11.1, respectively. At immediate post-intubation, the mean arterial pressures in the NS, S0.1, S0.2, and S0.3 groups were 129.7 ± 14.7, 120.7 ± 14.2, 120.8 ± 17.2, and 96.7 ± 10.4, respectively. At immediate post-intubation, the mean arterial pressure in the NS, S0.1, and S0.2 groups significantly increased from baseline (P < 0.001), but the S0.3 group showed no difference. In the time point comparison at immediate post- intubation, the S0.3 group had a significantly lower mean arterial pressure than did the NS, S0.1, and S0.2 groups (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: We found that 0.3 mcg/kg of sufentanil attenuates cardiovascular responses to double-lumen endobronchial intubation without adverse effects.

RESUMO

Unique dual medical system in Korea has resulted in the emergence of dual-licensed medical doctors (DLMDs) who have both traditional Korean medicine (KM) and Western medicine (WM) licenses. There have been few studies on DLMDs in spite of their growing number and importance within the medical system. We surveyed the current status and attitudes of DLMD to assess their role in integrative medicine. Questionnaires were administered to the members of the association of DLMD. Data from 103 DLMD were collected and statistically analyzed. 41.4% of DLMD were copracticing both WM and KM at a single clinic, preferring the WM approach for physical examinations, laboratory tests, and education for patients-and the KM approach for treatment and prescription. Musculoskeletal, gastroenterologic, and allergic diseases were considered to be effectively treated with co-practice. DLMD highly agreed on the efficiency of copractice for disease control and patients' satisfaction. On the other hand, they regarded the lack of health insurance coverage for copractice and increased medical expenditure as major problems in providing co-practice. To expand the role of DLMD as mediators of integration in primary health care, the effectiveness of their co-practice should be evaluated and a corresponding health insurance reimbursement system should be established.

RESUMO

To understand the collective properties of nanoparticles, it is necessary to control the particle size, spacing and ordering. Here we describe the chemical synthesis of well-controlled silver nanoparticles, the wet coat preparation and the optical properties of its film. The light incidence angle and polarization dependency of the resonant spectra show distinctive surface plasmon resonance extinction peaks for isolated particles and the coupled modes of neighbouring particles. Furthermore, we discuss the thermal treatment and dielectric surrounding effects on the optical properties of silver nanoparticle film.

RESUMO

We have measured Ce 4f spectral weights of extremely alpha-like Ce transition metal intermetallic compounds CeRhx (x=2,3) and CeNix (x=2,5) by using the bulk-sensitive resonant photoemission technique at the Ce M5(3d(5/2)-->4f) edge. High energy resolution and longer escape depth of photoemitted electron at this photon energy enabled us to distinguish the sharp Kondo resonance tails at the Fermi level, which can be well described by the Gunnarsson-Schönhammer calculation based on the Anderson impurity Hamiltonian. On the other hand, the itinerant 4f band description shows big discrepancies, which implies that Ce 4f electrons retain localized characters even in extremely alpha-like compounds.
