RESUMO

A giant cell tumor (GCT) of the bone is characteristically found in skeletally mature patients. The tumor is rare in pediatric patients, and incidence reported in literature varies from 1.8% to 10.6%. We performed a retrospective study addressing symptoms, treatment, and outcome in pediatric patients who were diagnosed with GCT between March 1997 and January 2015 at our hospital. Fourteen (11.1%) of 126 surgically treated patients with histologically proven GCT were <19 years of age. We confirmed skeletal maturity using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Fourteen patients from 8 to 19 years old were identified. Sixteen lesions (76.2%) were found in long bones and 5 lesions (23.8%) in short bones. The most common site was around the knee in 8 patients (38%). GCTs mostly occur at the epi-metaphysis in 11 patients (52.3%). Regardless of the openness of epiphyseal plate, we observed GCT of bone in the epiphysis. Further study will be needed to prove the association between the presence of epiphyseal plate and location of tumor. Three patients (21.4%) had multicentric lesions, and four patients (28.5%) had local recurrence. Multicentric giant cell tumor and local recurrence occur more often in pediatric patients. The characteristics of GCT in pediatric patients do not differ from what is reported for GCT in adults.

RESUMO

Pulmonary sclerosing pneumocytoma (PSP) is a rare benign neoplasm that predominantly affects middle-aged Asian women. PSP is often asymptomatic and demonstrates a solitary pulmonary nodule on radiologic examination. We report a case of PSP initially misdiagnosed as lung cancer because of strong (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake revealed by (18)F-FDG positron emission tomography-computed tomography scan. After surgery, pathology revealed that the tumor cells were immunopositive for epithelial membrane antigen and thyroid transcription factor-1. The patient has been followed up without complication or recurrence.

We report an approach for selecting an internal standard to improve the precision of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analysis for determining calcium (Ca) concentration in water. The dissolved Ca(2+) ions were pre-concentrated on filter paper by evaporating water. The filter paper was dried and analyzed using LIBS. By adding strontium chloride to sample solutions and using a Sr II line at 407.771 nm for the intensity normalization of Ca II lines at 393.366 or 396.847 nm, the analysis precision could be significantly improved. The Ca II and Sr II line intensities were mapped across the filter paper, and they showed a strong positive shot-to-shot correlation with the same spatial distribution on the filter paper surface. We applied this analysis approach for the measurement of Ca(2+) in tap, bottled, and ground water samples. The Ca(2+) concentrations determined using LIBS are in good agreement with those obtained from flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Finally, we suggest a homologous relation of the strongest emission lines of period 4 and 5 elements in groups IA and IIA based on their similar electronic structures. Our results indicate that the LIBS can be effectively applied for liquid analysis at the sub-parts per million level with high precision using a simple drying of liquid solutions on filter paper and the use of the correct internal standard elements with the similar valence electronic structure with respect to the analytes of interest.
