RESUMO

Aqueous zinc-vanadium hybrid redox flow battery systems are an efficient strategy to address the problems of low voltage and high cost of conventional all-vanadium redox flow batteries. However, the low electrochemical activity of carbon-based electrodes toward a vanadium redox reaction limits the performance of redox flow batteries. In this study, polyhedral binary cerium titanium oxide (Ce2/3TiO3, CTO) is synthesized using molten salt synthesis. CTO is fabricated by adjusting the temperature and composition. Notably, the prepared CTO obtained at 1000 °C shows the highest catalytic activity for a VO2+/VO2+ redox reaction. Further, CTO is prepared as a composite electrocatalyst and applied to a high-voltage aqueous zinc-vanadium redox flow battery. The cell adopts an alkali zinc electrolyte containing a Zn/[Zn(OH)4]2- redox pair and exhibits a high operating voltage of 2.26 V. Remarkably, a zinc-vanadium redox flow battery using the composite electrocatalyst exhibits a high energy density of 42.68 Wh L-1 at 20 mA cm-2 and an initial voltage efficiency of 90.3%. The excellent cell performance is attributed to structural defects caused by A-site deficiency in the perovskite oxide structure as well as oxygen vacancies resulting from the low valence state of the metal ion, which enhance the catalytic activity of the vanadium ions.

RESUMO

Various redox couples have been reported to increase the energy density and reduce the price of redox flow batteries (RFBs). Among them, the vanadium electrolyte is mainly used due to its high solubility, but electrode modification is still necessary due to its low reversibility and sluggish kinetics. Also, an incompatible ion exchange membrane with redox-active species leads to self-discharge referred to as crossover. Here, we report a V/Mn RFB using an anion exchange membrane (AEM) for crossover mitigation and etched carbon felt by nickel-bismuth (NB-ECF) for the vanadium anolyte. The NB-ECF significantly enhances the reversibility and kinetics of the V2+/V3+ redox reaction, attributed to inhibited irreversible hydrogen evolution by the Bi catalyst and increased carboxyl groups by nickel (etching and NiO catalyst). Notably, the V/Mn cell employed in the NB-ECF maintains a high energy efficiency of 85.7% during 50 cycles without capacity degradation at a current density of 20 mA cm-2, which is attributed to a synergistic effect of crossover mitigation and facilitated V2+/V3+ redox reaction. This study demonstrates the novel electrocatalyst design of carbon felt using two metal species.

RESUMO

Nanoparticles are primarily taken up by immune cells after systemic administration. Thus, they are considered an ideal drug delivery vehicle for immunomodulation. Because the spleen is the largest lymphatic organ and regulates the systemic immune system, there have been studies to develop spleen targeting nanoparticles for immunomodulation of cancer and immunological disorders. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) includes disorders involving chronic inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract and is considered incurable despite a variety of treatment options. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is one of the gasotransmitters that carries out anti-inflammatory functions and has shown promising immunomodulatory effects in various inflammatory diseases including IBD. Herein, we developed a delicately tuned H2S donor delivering liposome for spleen targeting (ST-H2S lipo) and studied its therapeutic effects in a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) induced colitis model. We identified the ideal PEG type and ratio of liposome for a high stability, loading efficiency, and spleen targeting effect. In the treatment of the DSS-induced colitis model, we found that ST-H2S lipo and conventional long-circulating liposomes loaded with H2S donors (LC-H2S lipo) reduced the severity of colitis, whereas unloaded H2S donors did not. Furthermore, the therapeutic effect of ST-H2S lipo was superior to that of LC-H2S lipo due to its better systemic immunomodulatory effect than that of LC-H2S lipo. Our findings demonstrate that spleen targeting H2S lipo may have therapeutic potential for IBD.

RESUMO

Aqueous zinc-based redox flow batteries are promising large-scale energy storage applications due to their low cost, high safety, and environmental friendliness. However, the zinc dendritic growth has depressed the cycle performance, stability, and efficiency, hindering the commercialization of the zinc-based redox flow batteries. We fabricate the carbon felt modified with bimodal sized tin and copper clusters (SCCF) with the electrometallic synthesis in a continuous-flow cell. The SCCF electrode provides a larger zinc nucleation area and lower overpotential than pristine carbon felt, which is ascribed to the well-controlled interfacial interaction of bimodal tin and copper particle clusters by suppressing unwanted alloy formation. The zinc symmetric flow battery and the zinc-based hybrid redox flow battery show the improved zinc plating and stripping efficiency. The SCCF electrode exhibits 75% improved cycling stability compared to the pristine carbon felt electrode in the zinc symmetric flow battery. Notably, the high-voltage aqueous zinc-vanadium redox flow battery demonstrates a high average cell voltage of 2.31 V at 40 mA cm-2, showing a Coulombic efficiency of 99.9% and an energy efficiency of 87.6% for 100 cycles. We introduce a facile strategy to suppress the zinc dendritic growth, enhancing the performance of the zinc-based redox flow batteries.

RESUMO

The energy density of redox flow batteries (RFBs) is generally affected by the standard electrode potential and the solubility of the redox active species. These crucial factors are closely related to the solvent in which the active materials are dissolved. Aqueous RFBs have been widely studied due to their excellent reaction kinetics and high solubility of the redox couple in aqueous media. However, the low voltage of conventional aqueous RFBs has hindered them from being candidates for practical applications. Recently, high-voltage aqueous RFBs are implemented based on the low negative potential of the Zn/[Zn(OH)4 ]2- reaction in an alkaline solution. Here, we review recent progress in the design of high energy density RFBs in both aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes, notably focusing on the Zn/MnO2 hybrid RFBs in detail. Furthermore, strategies for inhibiting zinc dendritic growth and stabilizing manganese redox couple in the RFBs system are discussed.

RESUMO

The adult female and first-instar nymph of a new species of Discochiton Hodgson & Williams, 2018, Discochiton bambusae Choi & Lee sp. n. are described and illustrated. They were collected on the culms of Bambusa tulda (Poaceae: Bambusoideae) in Myanmar. The adult female has several unique morphological features, such as a large body, up to 15 mm long; legs much reduced; and sclerotized plates forming submedial bands or patches on the venter. Furthermore, the adult female has more marginal radial lines and stigmatic spines than are found in other Discochiton species. The first-instar nymph is also much larger than those of other Discochiton species, and is also distinct in having tibial setae, and a greater number of spiracular disc-pores and marginal setae compared to those of other species of Discochiton.

RESUMO

The intratumoral accumulation of nanomedicine has been considered a passive process, referred to as the enhanced permeability and retention effect. Recent studies have suggested that the tumor uptake of nanomedicines follows an energy-dependent pathway rather than being a passive process. Herein, to explore the factor candidates that are associated with nanomedicine tumor uptake, a molecular marker identification platform is developed by integrating microscopic fluorescence images of a nanomedicine distribution with spatial transcriptomics information. When this approach is applied to PEGylated liposomes, molecular markers related to hypoxia, glycolysis, and apoptosis can be identified as being related to the intratumoral distribution of the nanomedicine. It is expected that the method can be applied to explain the distribution of a wide range of nanomedicines and that the data obtained from this analysis can enhance the precise utilization of nanomedicines.

RESUMO

Two new mealybug species (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Pseudococcidae), namely, Dysmicoccus kunaw Tanaka sp. nov. and Phenacoccus miruku Tanaka Choi sp. nov., collected in Japan, are described based on the morphological characteristics of the adult females. Dysmicoccus kunaw resembles D. trispinosus (Hall 1923) and D. furcillosus Williams 2004, but differs from them in having two conical cerarian setae in each anal lobe cerarius, a considerable number of dorsal multilocular pores on the abdominal segments, and two types of oral collar tubular ducts on the venter. Phenacoccus miruku is similar to P. sisymbriifolium Granara de Willink 2007 and P. similis Granara de Willink 1983, but differs by lacking quinqelocular pores anterior to the mouthparts and translucent pores on the hind tibiae, and in the shape of the circulus. A molecular phylogenetic analysis was used to investigate the phylogenetic placements of the two new species. Keys to the species of Dysmicoccus Ferris and Phenacoccus Cockerell found in Japan are provided.

RESUMO

Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have been considered as a next-generation battery system with high energy density and abundant resources. However, the sluggish multi-step reaction of the oxygen is the main obstacle for the practical application of ZABs. Therefore, bifunctional electrocatalysts with high stability and activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are greatly required to promote the catalytic reaction. In this review, we first explain the reaction mechanism of the ZABs, mainly focusing on multiple oxygen intermediates. Then, the latest studies on bifunctional electrocatalysts for the air cathodes and their progress of the ZABs are discussed with following aspects: platinum group metal, metal-free, transition metal, and metal compound-derived electrocatalysts. Finally, we highlight the advanced ZAB systems with the design of the full-temperature range operation, the all-solid-state, and the newly reported non-alkaline electrolyte, summarizing the remaining challenges and requirements of the future research directions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: High levels of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) tumor uptake are associated with worse prognosis in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Meanwhile, high levels of immune cell infiltration in primary tumor have been linked to better prognosis in NSCLC. We conducted this study for precisely stratified prognosis of the lung adenocarcinoma patients using the integration of 18F-FDG positron emission tomography (PET) parameters and infiltrating immune cell scores as assessed by a genomic analysis. RESULTS: Using an RNA sequencing dataset, the patients were divided into three subtype groups. Additionally, 24 different immune cell scores and cytolytic scores (CYT) were obtained. In 18F-FDG PET scans, PET parameters of the primary tumors were obtained. An ANOVA test, a Chi-square test and a correlation analysis were also conducted. A Kaplan-Meier survival analysis with the log-rank test and multivariable Cox regression test was performed to evaluate prognostic values of the parameters. The terminal respiratory unit (TRU) group demonstrated lower 18F-FDG PET parameters, more females, and lower stages than the other groups. Meanwhile, the proximal inflammatory (PI) group showed a significantly higher CYT score compared to the other groups (P = .001). Also, CYT showed a positive correlation with tumor-to-liver maximum standardized uptake value ratio (TLR) in the PI group (P = .027). A high TLR (P = .01) score of 18F-FDG PET parameters and a high T follicular helper cell (TFH) score (P = .005) of immune cell scores were associated with prognosis with opposite tendencies. Furthermore, TLR and TFH were predictive of overall survival even after adjusting for clinicopathologic features and others (P = .024 and .047). CONCLUSIONS: A high TLR score was found to be associated with worse prognosis, while high CD8 T cell and TFH scores predicted better prognosis in lung adenocarcinoma. Furthermore, TLR and TFH can be used to predict prognosis independently in patients with lung adenocarcinoma.

RESUMO

We report the interfacial study of a silicon/carbon nanofiber/graphene composite as a potentially high-performance anode for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Silicon nanoparticle (Si)/carbon nanofiber (CNF)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite films were prepared by simple physical filtration and an environmentally-friendly thermal reduction treatment. The films were used as high-performance anode materials for self-supporting, binder-free LIBs. Reducing graphene oxide improves the electron conductivity and adjusts to the volume change during repeated charge/discharge processes. CNFs can help maintain the structural stability and prevent the peeling off of silicon nanoparticles from the electrodes. When the fabricated Si/CNF/rGO composites were used as anodes of LIBs, the initial specific capacity was measured to be 1894.54 mAh/g at a current density of 0.1 A/g. After 100 cycles, the reversible specific capacity was maintained at 964.68 mAh/g, and the coulombic efficiency could reach 93.8% at the same current density. The Si/CNF/rGO composite electrode exhibited a higher specific capacity and cycle stability than an Si/rGO composite electrode. The Si/CNF/rGO composite films can effectively accommodate and buffer changes in the volume of silicon nanoparticles, form a stable solid-electrolyte interface, improve the conductivity of the electrode, and provide a fast and efficient channel for electron and ion transport.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Currently, the reference method of brown adipose tissue (BAT) imaging is 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography ([18F]FDG PET). BAT imaging by [18F]FDG PET requires additional stimulation process, which is inconvenient and hard to be standardized. The translocator protein 18 kDa (TSPO) PET has been found to be effective for visualization of BAT. Herein, we evaluated the feasibility of [18F]fluoromethyl-PBR28-d2 ([18F]fmPBR28-d2), a TSPO PET tracer, for interscapular BAT imaging in comparison with [18F]FDG PET. METHODS: C57BL/6 mice were used for the [18F]fmPBR28-d2 and [18F]FDG PET imaging. [18F]fmPBR28-d2 PET was performed in the thermoneutral condition (n = 5) and after cold exposure (4 °C for 4 h) on the next day using the same mice. [18F]FDG PET was performed in the thermoneutral and cold exposure conditions with the same method with [18F]fmPBR28-d2 PET. Ex vivo biodistribution study of [18F]fmPBR28-d2 was performed in ten C57BL/6 mice (5: thermoneutral, 5: cold exposure). TSPO immunohistochemistry was done in interscapular BAT. RESULTS: The [18F]fmPBR28-d2 PET images showed prominent interscapular BAT uptakes under both thermoneutral and cold exposure conditions. While, the BAT uptake was significantly higher under the cold exposure condition than the thermoneutral condition (12.83 ± 5.06 vs. 22.50 ± 6.03, P = 0.007). Also, [18F]FDG PET imaging showed higher BAT uptake under the cold exposure condition than thermoneutral condition (8.40 ± 0.63 vs. 21.41 ± 4.03, P = 0.001). The interscapular BAT to background (thigh muscle) ratio was higher in [18F]fmPBR28-d2 PET than [18F]FDG PET under both thermoneutral and cold exposure conditions. Ex vivo biodistribution study using [18F]fmPBR28-d2 also showed higher BAT uptake under cold exposure than the thermoneutral condition (8.86 ± 1.74 vs.16.93 ± 4.74, P = 0.036). Also, IHC demonstrated that TSPO expression was significantly increased in the cold exposure group. CONCLUSIONS: [18F]FmPBR28-d2 PET demonstrated prominent interscapular BAT uptakes regardless of additional stimulation, and showed a higher BAT to background ratio than [18F]FDG PET. Also, we found that [18F]fmPBR28-d2 PET uptake and TSPO expression of BAT increased under cold exposure condition. Further works are warranted to assess the clinical significance of TSPO PET uptake in BAT.

RESUMO

Radiotherapy is an essential step during the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), one of the most lethal malignancies. The survival in patients with GBM was improved by the current standard of care for GBM established in 2005 but has stagnated since then. Since GBM is a radioresistant malignancy and the most of GBM recurrences occur in the radiotherapy field, increasing the effectiveness of radiotherapy using high-Z metal nanoparticles (NPs) has recently attracted attention. This review summarizes the progress in radiotherapy approaches for the current treatment of GBM, the physical and biological mechanisms of radiosensitization through high-Z metal NPs, and the results of studies on radiosensitization in the in vitro and in vivo GBM models using high-Z metal NPs to date.

RESUMO

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an effective anticancer strategy with a higher selectivity and fewer adverse effects than conventional therapies; however, shallow tissue penetration depth of light has hampered the clinical utility of PDT. Recently, reports have indicated that Cerenkov luminescence-induced PDT may overcome the tissue penetration limitation of conventional PDT. However, the effectiveness of this method is controversial because of its low luminescence intensity. Herein, we developed a radiolabeled diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid chelated Eu3+ (Eu-DTPA)/photosensitizer (PS) loaded liposome (Eu/PS-lipo) that utilizes ionizing radiation from radioisotopes for effective in vivo imaging and radioluminescence-induced PDT. We utilized Victoria blue-BO (VBBO) as a PS and observed an efficient luminescence resonance energy transfer between Eu-DTPA and VBBO. Furthermore, 64Cu-labeled Eu lipo demonstrated a strong radioluminescence with a 2-fold higher intensity than Cerenkov luminescence from free 64Cu. In our radioluminescence liposome, radioluminescence energy transfer showed a 6-fold higher energy transfer efficiency to VBBO than Cerenkov luminescence energy transfer (CLET). 64Cu-labeled Eu/VBBO lipo (64Cu-Eu/VBBO lipo) showed a substantial tumor uptake of up to 19.3%ID/g by enhanced permeability and retention effects, as revealed by in vivo positron emission tomography. Finally, the PDT using 64Cu-Eu/VBBO lipo demonstrated significantly higher in vitro and in vivo therapeutic effects than Cerenkov luminescence-induced PDT using 64Cu-VBBO lipo. This study envisions a great opportunity for clinical PDT application by establishing the radioluminescence liposome which has high tumor targeting and efficient energy transfer capability from radioisotopes.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The linkage between the genetic and phenotypic heterogeneity of the tumor has not been thoroughly evaluated. Herein, we investigated how the genetic and metabolic heterogeneity features of the tumor are associated with each other in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC). We further assessed the prognostic significance of those features. METHODS: The mutant-allele tumor heterogeneity (MATH) score (n = 508), a genetic heterogeneity feature, and tumor glycolysis feature (GlycoS) (n = 503) were obtained from the HNSC dataset in the cancer genome atlas (TCGA). We identified matching patients (n = 33) who underwent 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) from the cancer imaging archive (TCIA) and obtained the following information from the primary tumor: metabolic, metabolic-volumetric, and metabolic heterogeneity features. The association between the genetic and metabolic features and their prognostic values were assessed. RESULTS: Tumor metabolic heterogeneity and metabolic-volumetric features showed a mild degree of association with MATH (n = 25, ρ = 0.4~0.5, P < 0.05 for all features). The patients with higher FDG PET features and MATH died sooner. Combination of MATH and tumor metabolic heterogeneity features showed a better stratification of prognosis than MATH. Also, higher MATH and GlycoS were associated with significantly worse overall survival (n = 499, P = 0.002 and 0.0001 for MATH and GlycoS, respectively). Furthermore, both MATH and GlycoS independently predicted overall survival after adjusting for clinicopathologic features and the other (P = 0.015 and 0.006, respectively). CONCLUSION: Both tumor metabolic heterogeneity and metabolic-volumetric features assessed by FDG PET showed a mild degree of association with genetic heterogeneity in HNSC. Both metabolic and genetic heterogeneity features were predictive of survival and there was an additive prognostic value when the metabolic and genetic heterogeneity features were combined. Also, MATH and GlycoS were independent prognostic factors in HNSC; they can be used for precise prognostication once validated.

RESUMO

Nippolachnus is a small Palaearctic-Oriental genus of very characteristic aphids that live on the leaves of woody Rosaceae. One species, N. piri, has hitherto been regarded to be widely distributed and relatively polyphagous. Members of this genus are considered to be easy to recognize due to the absence of the ocular tubercle and triommatidia on the head. We conducted research on the morphology and generic characters of Nippolachnus piri complex using scanning electron microscopy (for the first time) and DNA barcoding. We analyzed N. piri populations on Pyrus and other plants (Eriobotrya, Rhaphiolepis and Sorbus) in Japan and the Republic of Korea. Specifically, a high genetic divergence value was found between the N. piri populations associated with different host plants. SEM investigation of the head capsule revealed that a triommatidium is present under the compound eye, despite their lack of an ocular tubercle. We propose Nippolachnus micromeli Shinji, 1924 stat. nov. as a cryptic species in the N. piri complex based on a morphological comparison, DNA barcoding and different host-plant associations. Illustrations and descriptions of studied species are given. Morphological keys to the apterae and alatae of all known species of the genus Nippolachnus are also provided.

RESUMO

Mariusz Kanturski, Yerim Lee, Jinyeong Choi, and Seunghwan Lee (2018) This study reports the first record of the oak-feeding aphid species Lachnus chosoni Szelegiewicz, 1975 (Hemiptera: Aphididae: Lachninae) in the Republic of Korea. Until now, only apterous viviparous females from the type material and type locality- Myohyangsan Mountain (The Democratic People's Republic of Korea)-were recorded. Apterous viviparous females of L. chosoni were collected from Quercus sp. in the area of Soul National University in Seoul for the first time in 2016. The specimens, which were collected in October and November 2017, represent the sexual generation of this species. We describe and figure the hitherto unknown oviparous female and apterous male of L. chosoni for the first time in detail. Notes on biology and copulation are also provided.
