RESUMO

Lipid transfer through membrane contact has been implicated to support vesicular transport, but a mechanistic understanding of this process remains to be achieved. Here, examining Coat Protein I (COPI) transport, we find that phosphatidylcholine (PC) with short acyl chains (sPC), which is needed to support COPI vesicle fission, is delivered through membrane contact from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to the Golgi complex at sites of COPI vesicle formation. Phosphatidylinositol transfer protein beta (PITPß) plays a central role in this delivery by not only catalyzing PC transfer, but also forming membrane contact. By combining cell-based studies with reconstitution approaches, we achieve spatial and temporal detail in explaining how sPC delivery occurs. Our findings advance the mechanistic understanding of how membrane contact is needed for vesicular transport in a model pathway and shed new insights into how PITPß acts.

RESUMO

The extracts of Corydalis heterocarpa, a salt-tolerant plant, exhibit diverse physiological properties, including anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antiadipogenic effects. However, the anti-aging effects of C. heterocarpa extract (CHE) on human skin cells have not yet been investigated. In the present study, we determined that CHE inhibited senescence-associated ß-galactosidase (SA-ß-gal)-stained senescent human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs). Furthermore, CHE markedly suppressed the expression of major regulatory proteins involved in senescence, including p53, p21, and caveolin-1. Interestingly, CHE promoted autophagic flux, as confirmed by the formation of microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3B (LC3B) puncta and lysosomal activity. Notably, using RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), we showed that CHE selectively regulated the gene expression of leucine-rich repeat and sterile alpha motif-containing 1 (LRSAM1), an important regulator of autophagy. The adenosine-monophosphate activated protein kinase/mammalian target of rapamycin (AMPK/mTOR) pathway, which is essential for autophagy regulation, was also modulated by CHE. LRSAM1 depletion not only inhibited LC3B expression but also decreased the autophagy flux induced by CHE. Moreover, the knockdown of LRSAM1 suppressed the reversal of CHE-induced senescence in old HDFs. Collectively, our study has revealed the rejuvenating effects and molecular mechanisms of CHE, suggesting that CHE may be a promising anti-aging agent.

RESUMO

AIM: In this study, we investigated the effects of Dendropanax morbifera extract (DME) on neuroprotection against ischemic damage in gerbils. METHODS: DME (100 or 300 mg/kg) was orally administered to gerbils for three weeks, and 2 h after the last DME treatment, transient forebrain ischemia in the common carotid arteries was induced for 5 min. The forebrain ischemia-related cognitive impairments were assessed by spontaneous motor activity and passive avoidance test one and four days after ischemia, respectively. In addition, surviving and degenerating neurons were morphologically confirmed by neuronal nuclei immunohistochemical staining and Fluoro-Jade C staining, respectively, four days after ischemia. Changes of glial morphology were visualized by immunohistochemical staining for each marker such as glial fibrillary acidic protein and ionized calcium-binding protein. Oxidative stress was determined by measurements of dihydroethidium, O2· (formation of formazan) and malondialdehyde two days after ischemia. In addition, glutathione redox system such as reduced glutathione, oxidized glutathione levels, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase activities were measured two days after ischemia. RESULTS: Spontaneous motor activity monitoring and passive avoidance tests showed that treatment with 300 mg/kg DME, but not 100 mg/kg, significantly alleviated ischemia-induced memory impairments. In addition, approximately 67 % of mature neurons survived and 29.3 % neurons were degenerated in hippocampal CA1 region four days after ischemia, and ischemia-induced morphological changes in astrocytes and microglia were decreased in the CA1 region after 300 mg/kg DME treatment. Furthermore, treatment with 300 mg/kg DME significantly ameliorated ischemia-induced oxidative stress, such as superoxide formation and lipid peroxidation, two days after ischemia. In addition, ischemia-induced reduction of the glutathione redox system in the hippocampus, assessed two days after the ischemia, was ameliorated by treatment with 300 mg/kg DME. These suggest that DME can potentially reduce ischemia-induced neuronal damage through its antioxidant properties.

RESUMO

A new fabrication method of nanofibrous metal oxide electrode comprising Pt nanofiber (Pt-NF) covered with PbO2 on a Ti substrate was proposed. Pt-NF was obtained by performing sputtering deposition of Pt on the surface of electrospun poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofiber on a Ti substrate, in which PVA was then removed by calcination (Ti/Pt-NF). Subsequently, by introducing PbO2 to the Ti/Pt-NF using the electrodeposition method, a nanofibrous Ti/Pt-NF/PbO2 electrode was finally obtained. Because the Ti substrate was covered by nanofibrous Pt, it had no environmental exposure and thus, was not oxidized during calcination. The crystal structure of the PbO2 mainly consisted of ß-form rather than α-form; the ß-form was suitable for electrochemical decomposition and remained stable even after 20 h of use. The nanofibrous Ti/Pt-NF/PbO2 electrodes showed 10% lower anode potential, 1.6 times higher current density at water decomposition potential, lower electrical resistance in the ion charge transfer resistance, and 2.27 times higher electrochemically active surface area than those of a planar-type Ti/Pt/PbO2 electrode, and demonstrated excellent electrochemical performance. As a result, compared with the planar electrode, the Ti/Pt-NF/PbO2 electrode showed more effective electrochemical decomposition toward nitrilotriacetic acid (80%) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (83%), which are commonly used as chelating agents in nuclear decontamination.

RESUMO

Background and Objectives: Preoperative echocardiography is widely performed in patients undergoing major surgeries to evaluate cardiac functions and detect structural abnormalities. However, studies on the clinical usefulness of preoperative echocardiography in patients undergoing cerebral aneurysm clipping are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the correlation between preoperative echocardiographic parameters and the incidence of postoperative complications in patients undergoing clipping of unruptured intracranial aneurysms. Materials and Methods: Electronic medical records of patients who underwent clipping of an unruptured intracranial aneurysm from September 2018 to April 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Data on baseline characteristics, laboratory variables, echocardiographic parameters, postoperative complications, and hospital stays were obtained. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify independent variables related to the occurrence of postoperative complications and prolonged hospital stay (≥8 d). Results: Among 531 patients included in the final analysis, 27 (5.1%) had postoperative complications. In multivariable logistic regression, the total amount of crystalloids infused (1.002 (1.001-1.003), p = 0.001) and E/e' ratio (1.17 (1.01-1.35), p = 0.031) were significant independent factors associated with the occurrence of a postoperative complication. Additionally, the maximal diameter of a cerebral aneurysm (1.13 (1.02-1.25), p = 0.024), total amount of crystalloids infused (1.001 (1.000-1.002), p = 0.031), E/A ratio (0.22 (0.05-0.95), p = 0.042), and E/e' ratio (1.16 (1.04-1.31), p = 0.011) were independent factors related to prolonged hospitalization. Conclusions: Echocardiographic parameters related to diastolic function might be associated with postoperative complications in patients undergoing clipping of unruptured intracranial aneurysms.

RESUMO

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease. Interleukin 31 (IL-31), a novel cytokine in AD, causes pruritus, typically characteristic of AD patients. The transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) is a cation channel activated by diverse noxious stimuli that has been studied in a variety of pruritic skin diseases. In this study, the AD animal model was generated by administering the hapten, trinitrochlorobenzene (TNCB), to Nc/Nga mice, and the degree of expression of the IL-31 receptor alpha (IL-31RA) and TRPV1 in the skin of these atopic models was evaluated. The Nc/Nga mice were divided into 3 groups: control, TNCB 2-weeks treated, and TNCB 8-weeks treated. After inducing AD, the skin lesions in each group were scored and compared, and the histology of the skin lesions and the IL-31RA and TRPV1 expression for each group were evaluated by analyzing immunohistochemistry. The results show a significant difference in the skin lesion scores between the groups. The immunohistochemistry evaluation highlighted the remarkable expression of IL-31RA and TRPV1 in the nerve fibers of the TNCB 8-weeks-treated group. We thus confirmed that the long-term application of TNCB induced chronic atopic-like dermatitis and that IL-31RA and TRPV1 were overexpressed in the peripheral nerve fibers in this AD model.

RESUMO

When disposing of spent fuel, nuclides such as Cs-137 and Sr-90, which generate short-term decay heat, must be removed from the spent nuclear fuel for efficient storage facility utilization. The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has been developing a nuclide management process that can enhance disposal efficiency by sorting and collecting primary nuclides and a technology for separating Sr nuclides from the spent nuclear fuels using precipitation and distillation. In this study, we prepared Sr ceramic waste form, SrTiO3, using the solid-state reaction method to immobilize the Sr nuclides, and its physicochemical properties were evaluated. Moreover, the radiological and thermal characteristics of the Sr waste form were evaluated by estimating the composition of Sr nuclides considering the spent nuclear fuel history such as burn-up and cooling period. The waste form was found to be stable with good mechanical strength and leaching properties in addition to a low coefficient of thermal expansion, which would be advantageous for intermediate storage. Based on the experimental and radiological results, the centerline temperature of the waste form caused by Sr-90 nuclide was estimated using the steady-state conduction equation. The centerline temperature increased with increasing diameter of the waste form. When generating the SrTiO3 waste form using the Sr nuclide recovered after a cooling period of 10 years, the centerline temperature was estimated to exceed the melting point of SrTiO3 at a diameter of 0.275 m, under all burn-up conditions. These results provide fundamental data for the management and intermediate storage of Sr waste.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of hemispherical dimple structures on the retention of cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) crowns cemented to titanium abutments, with different heights and numbers of dimples on the axial walls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 3.0-mm and 6.0-mm abutments (N = 180) and Co-Cr crowns were prepared. The experimental groups were divided into two and four dimple groups. The crowns were cemented by TempBond and PANAVIA F 2.0 cements. The retention forces were measured after thermal treatments. A two-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc Tukey HSD test were conducted to analyze change in retention forces by use of dimples between groups, as well as t test for the effect of abutment height change (α = .05). RESULTS: Results of the two-way ANOVA showed a statistically significant difference in retention force due to the use of dimples, regardless of the types of cements used (P < .001). A significantly higher mean retention forces were observed in the groups with dimples than in the control group, using the post hoc Tukey HSD test (P < .001). Results of t test displayed a statistically significant increase in the retention force with 6.0-mm abutments compared with 3.0-mm abutments (P < .001). The groups without dimples revealed adhesive failure of cements, while the groups with dimples showed mixed failure of cements. CONCLUSION: Use of hemispherical dimples was effective for increasing retention forces of cemented crowns.

RESUMO

Malate dehydrogenase (MDH) plays an important role in the conversion of malate to oxaloacetate during the tricarboxylic acid cycle. In this study, we examined the role of cytoplasmic MDH (MDH1) in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced oxidative stress in HT22 cells and ischemia-induced neuronal damage in the gerbil hippocampus. The Tat-MDH1 fusion protein was constructed to enable the delivery of MDH1 into the intracellular space and penetration of the blood-brain barrier. Tat-MDH1, but not MDH1 control protein, showed significant cellular delivery in HT22 cells in a concentration- and time-dependent manner and gradual intracellular degradation in HT22 cells. Treatment with 4 µM Tat-MDH1 significantly ameliorated 200 µM H2O2-induced cell death, DNA fragmentation, and reactive oxygen species formation in HT22 cells. Transient increases in MDH1 immunoreactivity were detected in the hippocampal CA1 region 6-12 h after ischemia, but MDH1 activity significantly decreased 2 days after ischemia. Supplementation of Tat-MDH1 immediately after ischemia alleviated ischemia-induced hyperlocomotion and neuronal damage 1 and 4 days after ischemia. In addition, treatment with Tat-MDH1 significantly ameliorated the increases in hydroperoxides, lipid peroxidation, and reactive oxygen species 2 days after ischemia. Tat-MDH1 treatment maintained the redox status of the glutathione system in the hippocampus 2 days after ischemia. These results suggest that Tat-MDH1 exerts neuroprotective effects by reducing oxidative stress and maintaining glutathione redox system in the hippocampus.

RESUMO

The design of the Korean traditional distiller 'sojutgori' was extracted as a digital sketch, and the internal fluid flow in the distillation process was tracked through computer simulation. Based on this, a new design was derived to improve distillation efficiency and its changes were researched. The ethanol particles vaporized inside the distiller were stagnated or their discharge was accelerated according to the magnitude and frequency of vortex. If the center is narrow and the fluid rotates, the vortex decreases or changes to a regular form. To effectively control the vortex, six simple models and two materialized models were designed and the optimal design was derived. When compared with the traditional distiller, the outlet fluid speed of the final design increased by 78% and the residence time dispersion of ethanol particles decreased by 39%. Furthermore, to suppress the temperature spread of fermented wash, a streamlined blade structure that can promote convection current was added. This structure had the effect of reducing the temperature spread of fermented wash by 57%. In addition, a reflux ring structure that can control the recondensed fermented wash caused by heat loss at the inner wall of the distiller was designed and applied. The reflux ring structure minimized the temperature change of the fermented wash and decreased temperature change by 23% compared to the condition without the reflux ring structure.

RESUMO

Characterization of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) represents a major challenge for analytical sciences due to their heterogeneity associated with post-translational modifications (PTMs). The protein glycosylation requires comprehensive identification, which could influence on the mAbs' structure and their function. Here, we demonstrated high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry with an ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography for characterization and comparison between biologics and biosimilar of infliximab at an advanced level. Comparing the N- and O-glycopeptides profiles, a total of 49 and 54 glycopeptides was identified for each product of the biologics and biosimilar, respectively. We also discovered one novel N-glycosylation site at the light chain from both biopharmaceuticals and one novel O-glycopeptide at the heavy chain from only biosimilar. Site-specific glycopeptide analysis process will be a robust and useful technique for evaluating therapeutic mAbs and complex glycoprotein products.

RESUMO

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether device removal in symptomatic patients following locking plate osteosynthesis of a proximal humerus fracture improves the clinical outcomes. Materials and Methods: Seventy-one patients who underwent fixed-angle locking plate osteosynthesis of a proximal humerus fracture were included. Thirty-three patients underwent device removal at a mean time of 10.4 months after index surgery (removal group). Thirty-eight patients who retained the device after index surgery (retention group) were included in the control group. Visual analog scale (VAS) pain score, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) score, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score, and range of motion (ROM) were evaluated pre- and postoperatively. Results: At the final follow-up, mean UCLA score, ASES score, and all ROMs were significantly higher in the removal group compared to the retention group (p < 0.001). However, no significant difference in mean VAS pain score was observed between the two groups. Comparison of the clinical outcomes before and after device removal surgery showed significant improvement in all clinical scores and ROMs after device removal (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Device removal surgery in symptomatic patients following locking plate osteosynthesis of a proximal humerus fracture can result in significant improvement in functional outcomes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Drug-eluting stents and balloons are occasionally used to reduce restenosis in medically intractable intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis. The authors aimed to determine whether such drugs can cause neurotoxicity due to local effects in a rat model. METHODS: Intra-arterial catheters were placed in the right common carotid artery of rats. Mannitol was injected to transiently open the brain-blood barrier (BBB), followed by high-dose drug (paclitaxel and rapamycin) injection. The optimal time interval of transient BBB opening for maximal drug penetration was determined to be 10 minutes. Paclitaxel and rapamycin were intraarterially administered in various doses. All the rats were neurologically evaluated, and their brain tissues were histologically examined. RESULTS: Neither neurological deficits nor histological abnormalities were observed in all the rats. CONCLUSION: Paclitaxel and rapamycin did not cause neurotoxicity in a rat model with transient BBB opening.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of side-sling plank (SSP) exercises on trunk and hip muscle activation in subjects with gluteus medius (Gmed) weakness is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To quantify muscle activation of the rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique (EO), erector spinae (ES), lumbar multifidus (LM), Gmed, gluteus maximus (Gmax), and tensor fasciae latae (TFL) during SSP with three different hip rotations compared to side-lying hip abduction (SHA) exercise in subjects with Gmed weakness. METHODS: Twenty-two subjects with Gmed weakness were recruited. SHA and three types of SSP exercises were performed: SSP with neutral hip (SSP-N), hip lateral rotation (SSP-L), and hip medial rotation (SSP-M). Surface electromyography was used to measure the activation of the trunk and hip muscles. RESULTS: The trunk and hip muscles activations were generally significantly higher level during three SSP than SHA. SSP-M showed significantly lower EO activation while significantly higher ES and LM activation than SSP-L. Gmed activation was significantly higher during SSP-M than during SSP-L. TFL activation was significantly lower during SSP-M than during SSP-N and SSP-L. CONCLUSIONS: SSP could be prescribed for patients who have reduced Gmed strength after injuries. Especially, SSP-M could be applied for patients who have Gmed weakness with dominant TFL.

RESUMO

Cancer has been identified as a leading cause of death worldwide, and the increasing number of cancer cases threatens to shorten the average life expectancy of people. Recently, we reported a 3-azido-3-deoxythymidine (AZT)-based amphipathic small molecule, ADG-2e that revealed a notable potency against tumor metastasis. To evaluate the anticancer potential of ADG-2e, we assessed its anticancer potency in vitro and in vivo. Anticancer screening of ADG-2e against cervical cancer cells, HeLa CCL2, and BT549 mammary gland ductal carcinoma showed significant inhibition of cancer cell proliferation. Furthermore, mechanistic investigations revealed that cancer cell death presumably proceeded through an oncosis mechanistic pathway because ADG-2e treated cells showed severe damage on the plasma membrane, a loss of membrane integrity, and leakage of α-tubulin and ß-actin. Finally, evaluation of the antitumorigenic potential of ADG-2e in mouse xenograft models revealed that this compound potentially inhibits cancer cell proliferation. Collectively, these findings suggest that ADG-2e can evolve as an anticancer agent, which may represent a model for nucleoside-based small molecule anticancer drug discovery.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Prostaglandin E2 E-prostanoid 2 receptor (PGE2 EP2), downstream of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), plays an important role in inflammatory responses, but there are some reports about synaptic functions of COX-2 and PGE2 EP2 in the hippocampus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: C57BL/6J mice were sacrificed at postnatal days (P) 1, 7, 14, 28, and 56 for immunohistochemical staining for EP2 and doublecortin as well as western blot for EP2. In addition, COX-2 knockout and its wild-type mice were euthanized for immunohistochemical staining for EP2. RESULTS: EP2 immunoreactivity was observed in the majority of the cells in the dentate gyrus at P1 and P7, while at P14, it was detected in the outer granule cell layer and was confined to its subgranular zone at P28 and P56. EP2 protein levels in the hippocampal homogenates were also highest at P7 and lowest at P56. EP2 immunoreactivity was partially colocalized, with doublecortin (DCX)-immunoreactive neuroblasts appearing in the mid-zone of the granule cell layer at P14 and in the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus at P28. Co-localization of EP2 and DCX was significantly decreased in the dentate gyrus in the P28 group compared with that in the P14 group. In COX-2 knockout mice, EP2 immunoreactivity was significantly decreased in the hippocampal CA1 region (P=0.000165) and dentate gyrus (P=0.00898). CONCLUSION: EP2 decreases with age, which is expressed in DCX-immunoreactive neuroblasts in the dentate gyrus. This suggests that EP2 is closely linked to structural lamination and adult neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus.

RESUMO

Many trials have been conducted to treat atopic dermatitis (AD), but these therapies are generally unsuccessful because of their insufficiency or side effects. This study examined the efficacy of ß-glucan derived from oats with fermented probiotics (called Synbio-glucan) on an AD-induced mouse model. For the experiment, Nc/Nga mice were exposed to a house dust mite extract (HDM) to induce AD. The mice were placed in one of four groups: positive control group, Synbio-glucan topical treatment group, Synbio-glucan dietary treatment group, and Synbio-glucan topical + dietary treatment group. The experiment revealed no significant difference in the serum IgE concentration among the groups. Serum cytokine antibody arrays showed that genes related to the immune response were enriched. A significant difference in the skin lesion scores was observed between the groups. Compared to the control group tissue, skin lesions were alleviated in the Synbio-glucan topical treatment group and Synbio-glucan dietary treatment group. Interestingly, almost normal structures were observed within the skin lesions in the Synbio-glucan topical + dietary treatment group. Overall, the ß-glucan extracted from oats and fermented probiotic mixture is effective in treating atopic dermatitis.

RESUMO

Acute pancreatitis is an acute inflammatory process in the pancreas that is common in dogs. This study was designed to compare cytokines between healthy dogs and dogs with suspected acute pancreatitis. For the canine cytokine antibody array, three healthy dogs and three dogs with suspected acute pancreatitis were included. Interleukin (IL)-2, IL-6, IL-10, GM-CSF, and TNF-α were not detected in either group based on the results. Conversely, IL-8 (p = 0.035), Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 (MCP)-1 (p = 0.0138), Receptor for Advanced Glycation Endproducts (RAGE) (p = 0.0079), and stem cell factor (SCF) (p = 0.034) were significantly increased in dogs with suspected acute pancreatitis. However, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) (p = 0.6971) did not differ significantly between groups. For the canine serum Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), eight healthy dogs and eight dogs with suspected acute pancreatitis were included. ELISA revealed that IL-8 (p < 0.0001), MCP-1 (p < 0.0001), RAGE (p = 0.006), and SCF (p = 0.0002) were all significantly upregulated in the experimental group. We confirmed multiple patterns of cytokines in suspected acute pancreatitis of dogs via canine cytokine antibody array using a small quantity of serum. After this procedure, we reevaluated the cytokines, which were significantly increased in dogs with suspected acute pancreatitis, by ELISA, with more samples. Through this study, we confirmed that MCP-1, RAGE, and SCF were newly suggested factors in dogs with suspected acute pancreatitis.

RESUMO

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the leading cause of lung cancer-related deaths worldwide. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), which can be polarized into tumor-promoting M2 phenotype, overexpress folate receptor beta (FRß) and are associated with poor prognosis in NSCLC. In addition, calpain-2 (CAPN2) is overexpressed in NSCLC and is involved in tumor growth. To improve the anticancer efficacy of drugs and reduce their side effects in the treatment of NSCLC, it is important to develop smart drug delivery systems with specific targeting ability and controlled release mechanisms. In this study, FRß-targeted pH-sensitive liposomes were designed as carriers to ensure efficient drug delivery and acid-responsive release in NSCLC cells. Folate-mediated targeting of FRß in M2 TAMs and NSCLC cells effectively inhibited tumor growth and the stimulus-responsive drug release reduced the toxic side effects of the drug. The combination of doxycycline (anti-CAPN2) and docetaxel (anticancer drug) showed a synergistic inhibitory effect on tumor growth by suppressing CAPN2 expression.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Choi, JH, Kim, DE, and Cynn, HS. Comparison of trunk muscle activity between traditional plank exercise and plank exercise with isometric contraction of ankle muscles in subjects with chronic low back pain. J Strength Cond Res 35(9): 2407-2413, 2021-This study aimed to compare the effects of 4 different ankle conditions on the activities of rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique (EO), transversus abdominis/internal oblique (TrA/IO), and erector spinae (ES) muscles during plank exercise in subjects with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Twenty-two subjects with CLBP participated in this study. The subjects performed the traditional plank and plank with 3 different ankle muscle contraction types (isometric contraction of ankle dorsiflexor, plantarflexor, and without ankle muscle contraction). Surface electromyography was used to measure the activities of RA, EO, TrA/IO, ES, tibialis anterior, and gastrocnemius muscles. A 1-way repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to assess the statistical significance of activities of the RA, EO, TrA/IO, and ES muscles. The activities of RA, EO, and TrA/IO muscles were significantly greater in the plank with isometric contraction of ankle dorsiflexor (PlankDF) than in the other 3 plank exercises. No significant difference in the activity of ES muscles was revealed during the 4 plank exercises. The activities of all abdominal muscles during PlankDF were significantly higher than those during the traditional plank, as well as during the plank with isometric contraction of ankle plantarflexor (PlankPF) and the plank without ankle muscular contraction (Plankw/o), and more than 60% of maximal voluntary isometric contraction was observed. Thus, PlankDF could be applied not only as a rehabilitation strategy for patients with decreased core stability owing to weakness of abdominal muscles but also as fitness program for improving core strength.
