Xanthogranulomatous osteomyelitis (XO) is a rare chronic inflammatory bone disease characterized by the presence of cholesterol-laden foam macrophages, histiocytes, and plasma cells. We report the case of a 41-year-old man with end-stage renal disease who had undergone deceased donor kidney transplantation 4 years earlier. He presented with a chest wall mass that he had first identified 2 weeks prior to admission. Computed tomography revealed a periosseous heterogeneously enhancing soft tissue mass adjacent to the sternal end of the left clavicle, accompanied by irregular and destructive osteolytic lesions on the left side of the sternal manubrium. A total mass resection, which included partial clavicle and sternum removal, was performed. Pathological examination revealed foamy histiocytes along with numerous lymphoplasmacytic cells, confirming the diagnosis of XO. This case underscores the potential for XO to develop following kidney transplantation.

It is crucial to establish appropriate background concentrations to discern heavy metal pollution in the marine environment. In this study, we analyzed heavy metals in deep-sea sediment cores to determine regional background concentrations at the East-Sea Byeong Ocean dumping site. The vertical profiles of heavy metals were categorized into three groups based on their contamination characteristics, and regional background levels for 12 metals were determined using pre-1900 averages. The enrichment factor, contamination factor, and pollution load index, calculated using regional background concentrations, indicated significant contamination by Cr, Co, Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg, and Pb during the ocean dumping period. These results differ from those obtained using global average concentrations. This underscores the importance of considering regional characteristics to minimize the risk of misinterpreting anthropogenic impacts. The approach based on local information is considered useful when sediment quality guidelines are absent or inapplicable.

Pistacia chinensis and Pistacia weinmannifolia are small trees and are distributed in East Asia, in particular China. The data on P. chinensis presented in this article is associated with the research article, "DOI: 10.5010/JPB.2019.46.4.274" [1]. Both P. chinensis and P. weinmannifolia have long been used as ethnobotanical plants to treat various illnesses, including dysentery, inflammatory swelling, rheumatism, liver diseases, influenza, lung cancer, etc. Many studies have been carried out to delve into the pharmaceutical properties of these Pistacia species using plant extracts, but genomic studies are very rarely performed to date. To enrich the genetic information of these two species, RNA sequencing was conducted using a pair-end Illumina HiSeq2500 sequencing system, resulting in 2.6 G of raw data from P. chinensis (Accession no: SRR10136265) and 2.7 G bases from P. weinmannifolia (Accession no: SRR10136264). Transcriptome shotgun assembly using three different assembly tools generated a total of 18,524 non-redundant contigs (N50, 1104 bp) from P. chinensis and 18,956 from P. weinmannifolia (N50, 1137 bp). The data is accessible at NCBI BioProject: PRJNA566127. These data would be crucial for the identification of genes associated with the compounds exerting pharmaceutical properties and also for molecular marker development.

PURPOSE: BVAC-B is an autologous B cell- and monocyte-based immunotherapeutic vaccine that contains cells transfected with a recombinant human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) gene and loaded with the natural killer T cell ligand alpha-galactosylceramide. Here, we report the first BVAC-B study in patients with HER2-positive advanced gastric cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with advanced gastric cancer refractory to standard treatment with HER2+ immunohistochemistry ≥ 1 were eligible for treatment. Patients were administered low (2.5×107 cells/dose), medium (5.0×107 cells/dose), or high dose (1.0×108 cells/dose) of BVAC-B intravenously four times every 4 weeks. Primary endpoints included safety and maximum tolerated BVAC-B dose. Secondary endpoints included preliminary clinical efficacy and BVAC-B-induced immune responses. RESULTS: Eight patients were treated with BVAC-B at low (n=1), medium (n=1), and high doses (n=6). No dose-limiting toxicity was observed, while treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) were observed in patients treated with medium and high doses. The most common TRAEs were grade 1 (n=2) and grade 2 (n=2) fever. Out of the six patients treated with high-dose BVAC-B, three had stable disease with no response. Interferon gamma, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukin-6 increased after BVAC-B treatment in all patients with medium and high dose, and HER2-specific antibody was detected in some patients. CONCLUSION: BVAC-B monotherapy had a safe toxicity profile with limited clinical activity; however, it activated immune cells in heavily pretreated patients with HER2-positive gastric cancer. Earlier treatment with BVAC-B and combination therapy is warranted for evaluation of clinical efficacy.

Between 1999 and 2009, 344,000 m3 of red mud was released into the red mud dumping zone in the East Sea-Byeong ocean dumping site in South Korea. This study aimed to assess the impacts before and after the 2010 red mud dumping ban. We quantified total Cr concentrations by depth from core sediment samples at the red mud dumping station and evaluated benthic communities in 2004, 2009, 2012, 2017, and 2019. At the dumping station DB-085, the Cr content in the upper layer (0-10 cm) exceeded the effect range median criteria in all study years and decreased with time. Geochemical fraction studies using sequential extraction methods from core sediment samples in 2004, 2009, and 2017 showed high ratios of non-residual fractions (anthropogenic inputs), indicating persistent potential long-term risk after the 2010 ban. Additionally, we confirmed that Thyasira tokunagai, an opportunistic and contamination-stress-resistant species, dominated the study station.

From 1991 to 2021, 16 categories of land-based waste, totaling 131,400,000 m3, were dumped at three sites in Korea. The concentration of heavy metals varied by waste type, with organic sludge showing higher levels than liquid waste. While wastewater treatment sludge was the most commonly discarded waste, the quantity and types of waste disposed of varied by site. Before the 2015 ban on ocean dumping, 62,330 tons of heavy metals were introduced, including zinc, copper, chromium, lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury in descending order of frequency. In each heavy metal category, the portion of land-based waste varied by dumping site. Compared to heavy metals from atmospheric deposition, anthropogenic heavy metal input from dumping was up to 141 times higher for copper. This study serves as a reference for estimating the impact of pollutants from dumped waste.

Wolfiporia extensa (WE) is a medicinal mushroom and an excellent source of naturally occurring anti-inflammatory substances. However, the particular bioactive compound(s) and mechanism(s) of action against inflammation have yet to be determined. Here, we studied anti-inflammatory bioactive compounds and their molecular mechanisms through network pharmacology. Methanol (ME) extract of WE (MEWE) was used for GC-MS analysis to identify the bioactives, which were screened by following Lipinski's rules. Public databases were used to extract selected bioactives and inflammation-related targets, and Venn diagrams exposed the common targets. Then, STRING and Cytoscape tools were used to construct protein-protein (PPI) network and mushroom-bioactives-target (M-C-T) networks. Gene Ontology and KEGG pathway analysis were performed by accessing the DAVID database and molecular docking was conducted to validate the findings. The chemical reactivity of key compounds and standard drugs was explored by the computational quantum mechanical modelling method (DFT study). Results from GC-MS revealed 27 bioactives, and all obeyed Lipinski's rules. The public databases uncovered 284 compound-related targets and 7283 inflammation targets. A Venn diagram pointed to 42 common targets which were manifested in the PPI and M-C-T networks. KEGG analysis pointed to the HIF-1 signaling pathway and, hence, the suggested strategy for preventing the onset of inflammatory response was inhibition of downstream NFKB, MAPK, mTOR, and PI3K-Akt signaling cascades. Molecular docking revealed the strongest binding affinity for "N-(3-chlorophenyl) naphthyl carboxamide" on five target proteins associated with the HIF-1 signaling pathway. Compared to the standard drug utilized in the DFT (Density Functional Theory) analysis, the proposed bioactive showed a good electron donor component and a reduced chemical hardness energy. Our research pinpoints the therapeutic efficiency of MEWE and this work suggests a key bioactive compound and its action mechanism against inflammation.

Sediment cores were collected from three sites, the Control, Dumping, and Resting sites in the East Sea-Byeong ocean dumping site, Korea, and the enrichment and degree of accumulation of heavy metals were investigated. Further, to assess the level of heavy metal pollution and understand the potential effects of the ocean dumping activities that began in 1993, the results obtained corresponding to the different sampling sites were compared, and various criteria were employed. Indices, including the enrichment factor and the modified contamination degree, demonstrated that the sediments were contaminated with various heavy metals at different contamination levels. The results also indicated a significant upward enrichment in heavy metals, with the uppermost 0-10 cm sediment layer showing relatively high concentrations. Overall, this study confirmed that anthropogenic heavy metal contamination at the study sites, and the implementation of continuous monitoring, alongside the application of proper management tools, is recommended.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of organic substrates on the growth yield, photosynthetic response, and nutritional profile of red leaf lettuce grown in different compositions of cocopeat (CP), sawdust (SD), and rice husk (RH). The result showed that the properties of substrates were influenced variably by their mixing ratios. The highest water holding capacity and moisture content were found in CP, and it provided the preferable pH, electrical conductivity, bulk density, and air-filled porosity in association with other categories of the substrate. Cocopeat-based media provides ample microclimate conditions in the root region of plants and increased their height, number of leaves, and fresh biomass components. The utmost dry biomass of plant parts also remarkably increased in CP; L*, a*, and b* chromaticity of leaves remained unchanged. The maximum chlorophyll content was attained in CP substrate, except for chlorophyll a/b, which was higher in RH. The net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), and nitrate in leaves were enhanced substantially in CP, while it was lower in SD. Biochemical compositions and nutrients in leaves were likewise stimulated under the culture of cocopeat-based media. Results indicate that cocopeat, sawdust, and rice husk are a possible substrates mixture in a volume ratio of 3:1:1, which would be a better choice in the cultivation of red leaf lettuce.

Heavy metals in the sediments of urban roads (RDS), storm drains (SDS), and marine areas (MS) were investigated to assess road pollution in a beach town adjacent to the coast in Busan and identify their relationships with the marine environment. RDS were considerably polluted with Zn, Cu, Cr, and Pb, with mean concentrations of 1090, 178, 171, and 199 mg/kg, respectively. MS were severely contaminated with Zn and Cu, exceeding the effects range median (ERM; Cu = 270, Zn = 410 mg/kg). PCA and HCA identified tire and brake wear in RDS as the major sources of Zn, Pb, Cu, and Cd, and that high levels of Zn, Cu, and Pb in RDS originating from traffic activities contaminated MS through the urban storm drain system. The results suggested that traffic-originated metals in RDS are potential pollutants in coastal environments, and further studies on their fate and management should be conducted.

: BVAC-C is a B cell-based and monocyte-based immuno-therapeutic vaccine transfected with a recombinant human papillomavirus (HPV) 16/18 E6/E7 gene and loaded with alpha-galactosyl ceramide, which is a natural killer T cell ligand. This phase I study sought to determine the tolerability and immunogenicity of BVAC-C in platinum-resistant recurrent cervical cancer patients. Patients with HPV 16-positive or 18-positive recurrent or persistent cervical cancer who had received at least one prior platinum-based combination chemotherapy were enrolled. BVAC-C was injected intravenously three times every four weeks, and dose escalation was planned in a three-patient cohort design at doses of 1 × 107, 4 × 107, or 1 × 108 cells/dose. Eleven patients were enrolled, and six (55%) patients had received two or more lines of platinum-based chemotherapy prior to enrollment. Treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) were observed in 21 cycles. Most TRAEs were mild fever (n = 6, 55%) or myalgia (n = 4, 36%). No dose-limiting toxicities occurred. The overall response rate was 11% among nine patients evaluable, and the duration of response was 10 months. Five patients (56%) achieved a stable disease for 4.2-11 months as their best overall response. The median progression-free survival in all patients was 6.8 months (95% CI, 3.2 to infinite months), and the overall survival rate at 6 and 12 months was 89% (95% CI, 71 to 100%) and 65% (95% CI, 39 to 100%), respectively. BVAC-C induced the activation of natural killer T cells, natural killer cells, and HPV 16/18 E6/E7-specific T cells upon vaccination in all patients evaluated. BVAC-C was well tolerated and demonstrated a durable anti-tumor activity with an immune response in HPV 16-positive or 18-positive recurrent cervical carcinoma patients. A Phase 2 efficacy trial is currently underway.

Decellularized esophageal matrices are ideal scaffolds for esophageal tissue engineering. Unfortunately, in order to improve transplantation possibilities, they require modification to reduce their degradation rate and immunogenicity. To date, no modifying agent has been approved to overcome these limitations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to improve the structural stability and biocompatibility of decellularized rat esophagi. AgNPs have the advantage over currently used agents in that they bind with collagen fibers in a highly ordered manner, via non-covalent binding mechanisms forming multiple binding sites, while other agents provide only two-point connections between collagen molecules. Rat esophagi were decellularized, loaded with 5 µg/mL of AgNPs (100 nm), and then treated with an immobilization-complex buffer composed of ethyl carbodiimide hydrochloride and N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS). Then, they were evaluated in terms of ultra-structural morphology, water uptake, in vitro resistance to enzymatic and thermal degradation, indentation strength, in vitro anti-calcification, cytocompatibility with rat bone marrow derived stromal cells (rat-BMSCs), angiogenic properties, and in vivo biocompatibility, and compared to scaffolds modified using glutaraldehyde and EDC/NHS complex buffer alone. AgNP-modified scaffolds showed an improved ultrastructure, good water uptake, and considerable resistance against in vitro degradation and indentation, and a high resistance against in vitro calcification. Moreover, they were cytocompatible for allogeneic rat-BMSCs. Additionally, AgNPs did not alter the angiogenic properties of the modified scaffolds and decreased host immune responses after their subcutaneous implantation. The structural properties and biocompatibility of decellularized esophageal matrices could be improved by conjugation with AgNPs.

Sediments of Yellow Sea dumping sites (YSDS) collected in 2015 were analyzed using the European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction method to assess the contamination and potential risk to the environment. Cr, Ni, Cu, and Zn exhibited the most dominant residual fraction, whereas Cd was mostly in the exchangeable fraction and Pb in the reducible fraction. Cr contains a significant amount of oxidizable fraction in the dumping area due to the dumping of tannery sludge with high concentrations of Cr, mainly in the organic matter-bound form. The global contamination factor (GCF) showed that high non-residual fractions of Cd and Pb contributed considerably to contamination. Nevertheless, modified potential ecological risk index (MRI) suggested low ecological risk for metals in YSDS because of the low total content of Cd and the small mobile fraction of other metals.

Decellularization of a whole organ is an attractive process that has been used to create 3D scaffolds structurally and micro-architecturally similar to the native one. Currently used decellularization protocols exhibit disrupted extracellular matrix (ECM) structure and denatured ECM proteins. Therefore, maintaining a balance between ECM preservation and cellular removal is a major challenge. The aim of this study was to optimize a multistep Triton X-100 based protocol (either using Triton X-100/ammonium hydroxide mixture alone or after its modification with DNase, sodium dodecyl sulfate or trypsin) that could achieve maximum decellularization with minimal liver ECM destruction suitable for subsequent organ implantation without immune rejection. Based on our findings, Triton X-100 multistep protocol was insufficient for whole liver decellularization and needed to be modified with other detergents. Among all Triton X-100 modified protocols, a Triton X-100/DNase-based one was considered the most suitable. It maintains a gradual but sufficient removal of cells to generate decellularized biocompatible liver scaffolds without any significant alteration to ECM micro- and ultra-structure.

The biomass and abundance of molluscan species were identified to evaluate the ecological quality of the surface sediment at the East Sea-Byeong ocean dumping site, Korea. To identify the dominant molluscan species, sediment samples were collected at nine selected stations during five expeditions in 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. In total, 16 molluscan species, including Aplacophora, Gastropoda, Bivalvia, and Scaphopoda, were observed. The bivalve Thyasira tokunagai was the dominant species, accounting for 82.6% of the total abundance of all identified species. This species was also the dominant benthic molluscan in sediments rich in organic matter and with a low manganese content. In addition, environmental variables, including sediment grain size, water depth, total organic carbon, and heavy metals, were found to be critical drivers affecting the spatial distribution of molluscan species.

Decellularization of tissues can significantly improve regenerative medicine and tissue engineering by producing natural, less immunogenic, three-dimensional, acellular matrices with high biological activity for transplantation. Decellularized matrices retain specific critical components of native tissues such as stem cell niche, various growth factors, and the ability to regenerate in vivo. However, recellularization and functionalization of these matrices remain limited, highlighting the need to improve the characteristics of decellularized matrices. Incorporating nanoparticles into decellularized tissues can overcome these limitations because nanoparticles possess unique properties such as multifunctionality and can modify the surface of decellularized matrices with additional growth factors, which can be loaded onto the nanoparticles. Therefore, in this minireview, we highlight the various approaches used to improve decellularized matrices with incorporation of nanoparticles and the challenges present in these applications.

Strong charge-spin coupling is found in a layered transition-metal trichalcogenide NiPS_{3}, a van der Waals antiferromagnet, from studies of the electronic structure using several experimental and theoretical tools: spectroscopic ellipsometry, x-ray absorption, photoemission spectroscopy, and density functional calculations. NiPS_{3} displays an anomalous shift in the optical spectral weight at the magnetic ordering temperature, reflecting strong coupling between the electronic and magnetic structures. X-ray absorption, photoemission, and optical spectra support a self-doped ground state in NiPS_{3}. Our work demonstrates that layered transition-metal trichalcogenide magnets are useful candidates for the study of correlated-electron physics in two-dimensional magnetic materials.

Whole kidney decellularization is a promising approach in regenerative medicine for engineering a functional organ. The reaction of the potential host depends on the biocompatibility of these decellularized constructs. Despite the proven ability of decellularized kidney scaffolds to guide cell attachment and growth, little is known about biocompatibility and hemocompatibility of these scaffolds. Our aim is to prepare decellularized kidneys of a clinically relevant size and evaluate its biocompatibility and hemocompatibility. Porcine kidneys were cannulated via the renal artery, and then perfused with 0.1% sodium dodecyl sulfate solution. Hematoxylin and eosin as well as DAPI staining confirmed cellular clearance from native kidneys in addition to preservation of the microstructure. SEM confirmed the absence of any cellular content within the scaffold, which is maintained in a well-organized 3D architecture. Decellularized kidneys retained the intact renal vasculature upon examination with contrast radiography. The essential structural extracellular matrix molecules were well-preserved. Scaffolds were susceptible to enzymatic degradation upon collagenase treatment. Scaffolds showed a good hemocompatibility when exposed to porcine blood. Decellularization was efficient to remove 97.7% of DNA from native kidneys in addition to the immunogenic and pathogenic antigens. Scaffolds did not induce the human immune response in vitro. Decellularized kidneys were non-cytotoxic to pig kidney cells (PKs). PKs were able to grow and proliferate within the decellularized renal scaffolds with maintaining a higher function than cells grown as monolayers. No ideal cross-linking agent has been identified for decellularized livers (DLs) yet. In this study, we evaluated structural improvements and biocompatibility of porcine DLs after cross-linking with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Porcine liver slices were decellularized and then loaded with AgNPs (100 nm) after optimization of the highest non-toxic concentration (5 µg/mL) using Human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) and EAhy926 human endothelial cell lines. The cross-linking effect of AgNPs was evaluated and compared to that of glutaraldehyde and ethyl carbodiimide hydrochloride and N-hydroxysuccinimide. The results indicated that AgNPs improved the ultra-structure of DLs' collagen fibres with good porosity and increased DLs' resistance against in vitro degradation with good cytocompatibility. AgNPs decreased the host inflammatory reaction against implanted porcine DL slices in vivo and increased the polarization of M2 macrophages. Thus, structural and functional improvements of Porcine DLs could be achieved using AgNPs.

To broaden and delve into the genomic information of Clausena excavata, an important medicinal plant in many Asian countries, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis was performed and a total of 16,638 non-redundant unigenes (≥ 300 bp) with an average length of 755 bp were generated by de novo assembly from 17,580,456 trimmed clear reads. The functional categorization of the identified unigenes by a gene ontology (GO) term resulted in 2305 genes in the cellular component, 5577 in the biological processes, and 8056 in the molecular functions, respectively. The top sub-category in biological processes was the metabolic process with 4374 genes. Among annotated genes, 3006 were mapped to 123 metabolic pathways by the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) metabolic pathway analysis tool. The search for simple sequence repeats (SSRs) resulted in 845 SSRs from 749 SSR-containing unigenes and the most abundant SSR motifs was AAG/CTT with 179 occurrences. Twelve SSR markers were tested for cross transferability among five Clausena species; eight of them exhibited polymorphism. Taken together, these data provide valuable resources for genomic or genetic studies of Clausena species and other relative studies.
