OBJECTIVES: To investigate the role and mechanism of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in a rat model of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). METHODS: The experiment consisted of two parts. (1) Forty-eight preterm rats were randomly divided into a normoxia group and a hyperoxia group, with 24 rats in each group. The hyperoxia group was exposed to 85% oxygen to establish a BPD model, while the normoxia group was kept in room air at normal pressure. Lung tissue samples were collected on days 1, 4, 7, and 14 of the experiment. (2) Rat type II alveolar epithelial cells (RLE-6TN) were randomly divided into a normoxia group (cultured in air) and a hyperoxia group (cultured in 95% oxygen), and cell samples were collected 12, 24, and 48 hours after hyperoxia exposure. Hematoxylin-eosin staining was used to observe alveolarization in preterm rat lungs, and immunofluorescence was used to detect the co-localization of surfactant protein C (SPC) and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) in preterm rat lung tissue and RLE-6TN cells. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and protein immunoblotting were used to detect the expression levels of EMT-related mRNA and proteins in preterm rat lung tissue and RLE-6TN cells. RESULTS: (1) Compared with the normoxia group, the hyperoxia group showed blocked alveolarization and simplified alveolar structure after 7 days of hyperoxia exposure. Co-localization of SPC and α-SMA was observed in lung tissue, with decreased SPC expression and increased α-SMA expression in the hyperoxia group at 7 and 14 days of hyperoxia exposure compared to the normoxia group. In the hyperoxia group, the mRNA and protein levels of TGF-ß1, α-SMA, and N-cadherin were increased, while the mRNA and protein levels of SPC and E-cadherin were decreased at 7 and 14 days of hyperoxia exposure compared to the normoxia group (P<0.05). (2) SPC and α-SMA was observed in RLE-6TN cells, with decreased SPC expression and increased α-SMA expression in the hyperoxia group at 24 and 48 hours of hyperoxia exposure compared to the normoxia group. Compared to the normoxia group, the mRNA and protein levels of SPC and E-cadherin in the hyperoxia group were decreased, while the mRNA and protein levels of TGF-ß1, α-SMA, and E-cadherin in the hyperoxia group increased at 48 hours of hyperoxia exposure (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: EMT disrupts the tight connections between alveolar epithelial cells in a preterm rat model of BPD, leading to simplified alveolar structure and abnormal development, and is involved in the development of BPD. The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) always results in a high overpotential at the anode of water electrolysis and an excessive electric energy consumption, which has been a major obstacle for hydrogen production through water electrolysis. In this study, we present a CoNi-LDH/Fe MOF/NF heterostructure catalyst with nanoneedle array morphology for the OER. In 1.0 M KOH solution, the heterostructure catalyst only required overpotentials of 275 and 305 mV to achieve high current densities of 500 and 1000 mA/cm2 for OER, respectively. The catalytic activities are much higher than those of the reference single-component CoNi-LDH/NF and Fe MOF/NF catalysts. The improved catalytic performance of the heterostructure catalyst can be ascribed to the synergistic effect of CoNi-LDH and Fe MOF. In particular, when the anodic OER is replaced with the urea oxidation reaction (UOR), which has a relatively lower thermodynamic equilibrium potential and is expected to reduce the cell voltage, the overpotentials required to achieve the same current densities can be reduced by 80 and 40 mV, respectively. The cell voltage required to drive overall urea splitting (OUS) is only 1.55 V at 100 mA/cm2 in the Pt/C/NF||CoNi-LDH/Fe MOF/NF two-electrode electrolytic cell. This value is 60 mV lower compared with that required for overall water splitting (OWS). Our results indicate that a reasonable construction of a heterostructure catalyst can significantly give rise to higher electrocatalytic performance, and using UOR to replace the anodic OER of the OWS can greatly reduce the electrolytic energy consumption.

Spin-crossover (SCO) coordination cages are at the forefront of research for their potential in crafting next-generation molecular devices. However, due to the scarcity of SCO hosts and their own limited cavities, the interplay between the SCO host and the multiple guests binding has remained elusive. In this contribution, we present a family of pseudo-octahedral coordination cages (M6L4, M = ZnII, CoII, FeII, and NiII) assembled from a tritopic tridentate ligand L with metal ions. The utilization of FeII ion leads to the successful creation of the Fe6L4-type SCO cage. Host-guest studies of these M6L4 cages reveal their capacity to encapsulate four adamantine-based guests. Notably, the spin transition temperature T1/2 of Fe6L4 is dependent on the multiple guests encapsulated. The inclusion of adamantine yields an unprecedented T1/2 shift of 54 K, a record shift in guest-mediated SCO coordination cages to date. This drastic shift is ascribed to the synergistic effect of multiple guests coupled with their optimal fit within the host. Through a straightforward thermodynamic cycle, the binding affinities of the high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) states are separated from their apparent binding constant. This result indicates that the LS state has a stronger binding affinity for the multiple guests than the HS state. Exploring the SCO thermodynamics of host-guest complexes allows us to examine the optimal fit of multiple guests to the host cavity. This study reveals that the T1/2 of the SCO host can be manipulated by the encapsulation of multiple guests, and the SCO cage is an ideal candidate for determining the multiple guest fit.

OBJECTIVES: Aortic valve regurgitation (AR) frequently complicates the clinical course after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has emerged as an alternative to surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) in this cohort with a mostly high surgical risk profile. The unique challenges in LVAD patients, such as presence of non-calcified aortic valves and annular dilatation, raise concerns about device migration and paravalvular leakage (PVL) leading to missing device success. This study evaluates procedural outcomes and survival rates in LVAD patients who underwent TAVI, emphasizing strategies to enhance device success. METHODS: Between January 2017 and April 2023, 27 LVAD patients with clinically significant AR underwent elective or urgent TAVI at our centre. Primary end-points were procedural success rates, without the need for a second transcatheter heart valve (THV) and postprocedural AR/PVL. Secondary outcomes included survival rates and adverse events. RESULTS: Among the cohort, 14.8% received AR-dedicated TAVI devices, with none requiring a second THV. There was no intraprocedural AR, and 1 patient (25%) had AR > 'trace' at discharge. Additionally, 25.9% underwent device landing zone (DLZ) pre-stenting with a standard TAVI device, all without needing a second THV. There was no intraprocedural AR, and none to trace AR at discharge. Among the 59.3% receiving standard TAVI devices, 37.5% required a second THV. In this subgroup, intraprocedural AR > 'trace' occurred in 12.5%, decreasing to 6.25% at discharge. In-hospital mortality was 3.7%, and median follow-up survival was 388 days (interquartile range 208-1167 days). CONCLUSIONS: TAVI yields promising procedural outcomes and early survival rates in LVAD patients with AR. Tailored TAVI devices and pre-stenting techniques enhance procedural success. Continued research into these strategies is essential to optimize outcomes in this complex patient cohort.

Renal fibrosis is the final pathological change in renal disease, and aging is closely related to renal fibrosis. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been reported to play an important role in aging, but the exact mechanism remains unclear. Disulfide-bond A oxidoreductase-like protein (DsbA-L) is mainly located in mitochondria and plays an important role in regulating mitochondrial function and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. However, the role of DsbA-L in renal aging has not been reported. In this study, we showed a reduction in DsbA-L expression, the disruption of mitochondrial function and an increase in fibrosis in the kidneys of 12- and 24-month-old mice compared to young mice. Furthermore, the deterioration of mitochondrial dysfunction and fibrosis were observed in DsbA-L-/- mice with D-gal-induced accelerated aging. Transcriptome analysis revealed a decrease in Flt4 expression and inhibition of the PI3K-AKT signaling pathway in DsbA-L-/- mice compared to control mice. Accelerated renal aging could be alleviated by an AKT agonist (SC79) or a mitochondrial protector (MitoQ) in mice with D-gal-induced aging. In vitro, overexpression of DsbA-L in HK-2 cells restored the expression of Flt4, AKT pathway factors, SP1 and PGC-1α and alleviated mitochondrial damage and cell senescence. These beneficial effects were partially blocked by inhibiting Flt4. Finally, activating the AKT pathway or improving mitochondrial function with chemical reagents could alleviate cell senescence. Our results indicate that the DsbA-L/AKT/PGC-1α signaling pathway could be a therapeutic target for age-related renal fibrosis and is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction.

Programmed death-ligand 1/programmed cell death 1 (PD-L1/PD-1) is one of the most important immune checkpoints in humans and other mammalian species. However, the occurrence of the PD-L1/PD-1 checkpoint in evolutionarily ancient vertebrates remains elusive because of the absence of a PD-1 homolog before its appearance in tetrapods. In this article, we identified, to our knowledge, a novel PD-L1/B and T lymphocyte attenuator (BTLA) checkpoint in zebrafish by using an Edwardsiella tarda-induced bacterial infection model. Results showed that zebrafish (Danio rerio) PD-L1 (DrPD-L1) and BTLA (DrBTLA) were differentially upregulated on MHC class II+ macrophages (Mϕs) and CD8+ T cells in response to E. tarda infection. DrPD-L1 has a strong ability to interact with DrBTLA, as shown by the high affinity (KD = 5.68 nM) between DrPD-L1/DrBTLA proteins. Functionally, the breakdown of DrPD-L1/DrBTLA interaction significantly increased the cytotoxicity of CD8+BTLA+ T cells to E. tarda-infected PD-L1+ Mϕ cells and reduced the immune escape of E. tarda from the target Mϕ cells, thereby enhancing the antibacterial immunity of zebrafish against E. tarda infection. Similarly, the engagement of DrPD-L1 by soluble DrBTLA protein diminished the tolerization of CD8+ T cells to E. tarda infection. By contrast, DrBTLA engagement by a soluble DrPD-L1 protein drives aberrant CD8+ T cell responses. These results were finally corroborated in a DrPD-L1-deficient (PD-L1-/-) zebrafish model. This study highlighted a primordial PD-L1/BTLA coinhibitory axis that regulates CD8+ T cell activation in teleost fish and may act as an alternative to the PD-L1/PD-1 axis in mammals. It also revealed a previously unrecognized strategy for E. tarda immune evasion by inducing CD8+ T cell tolerance to target Mϕ cells through eliciting the PD-L1/BTLA checkpoint pathway.

Ln2L3-type supramolecular architectures have received significant attention recently due to their unique magnetism and optical properties. Herein, we report the triple-stranded Ln2L3-type lanthanide molecular quasi-lanterns, which are fabricated by the deprotonation self-assembly of a linear ligand featuring a ß-diketone chelating claw and 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) moiety with lanthanide ions (Ln = Eu3+ and Dy3+). The crystal structure analysis indicates that Eu3+ and Dy3+ ions are all coordinated by eight oxygen donors but in different coordination geometries. The eight oxygen donors in Eu2L3 and Dy2L3 are arranged in a square antiprism and triangular dodecahedron geometry, respectively. Taking into account the fact that the bpy moiety has a strong coordination affinity for transition metal ions, luminescence sensing toward Cu2+ ions has been demonstrated with Eu2L3, bearing a detection of limit as low as 2.84 ppb. The luminescence sensing behavior of Eu2L3 is ascribed to the formation host-guest complex between Eu2L3 and Cu2+ ions with a 1:2 binding ratio. Dynamic AC susceptibility measurements for Dy2L3 reveal the relaxation of magnetization in it. This work provides a potential way for design and fabrication of lanthanide-based molecular materials with functions endowed by the ligands.

Well-defined 3d-4f heterometallic supramolecular architectures have attracted attention because of their applications in the field of luminescence and magnetism. However, covalent metallo-supramolecular discrete complexes, decorated with hetero-metallic vertices, have never been reported because of the difficulties in design and control. Herein, we report a series of covalent metallo-supramolecular discrete complexes with 3d-4f vertices synthesized by hierarchical subcomponent self-assembly of tris(2-aminoethyl)amine, 2,6-diformyl-p-cresol, and lanthanide ions (Ln) with different amines and transition metal ions. The programmable self-assembly process results in the formation of triple-stranded hetero-metallic covalent organic discrete complexes, namely 3a-3c-(Ln, Zn) (Ln = SmIII, EuIII, DyIII, YbIII and LuIII) and 3a'-(Dy, Co), which are characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis, electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-TOF-MS), and single-crystal X-ray analysis. Photophysical investigations disclose that the organic skeleton of 3a-(Ln, Zn) exhibits an excellent sensitizing ability toward SmIII, EuIII, and YbIII ions, displaying characteristic luminescence emission in both the visible and near-infrared (NIR) regions. AC susceptibility measurements of 3a'-(Dy, Co) reveal the frequency-independent performance under zero dc field, suggesting the absence of slow relaxation of magnetization. This work offers a new approach for the fabrication of discrete metallic covalent architectures with 3d-4f vertices.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To describe the patterns of pre-operative aberrant regeneration and motility outcomes reported in an international registry of patients with 3rd-nerve palsy treated with nasal transposition of the split lateral rectus muscle (NTSLR). METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from an international, multicentre registry of patients with 3rd-nerve palsy treated with NTSLR. Patients with aberrant regeneration were identified, and patterns of innervation described. Demographics and postoperative success defined as horizontal alignment ≤15 PD were compared based on the presence, and type, of aberrant regeneration using Wilcoxon rank sum and Fisher's exact tests. RESULTS: Aberrant regeneration was reported in 16% (21/129) of patients. Age at diagnosis, sex, and aetiology of palsy were not significantly associated with aberrant regeneration. Abnormal movements were triggered by adduction in 52% (11/21), infraduction in 23% (5/21), and supraduction in 23% (5/21) of cases. Presentation patterns involved rectus muscle innervation in 29% (6/21) and levator muscle innervation in 71% (15/21) of cases. Although patients with aberrant regeneration had similar probability of success in comparison to those without following NTLSR (76% vs. 69%, p = 0.5), those with abnormal innervation of a rectus muscle had a lower success rate than those with abnormal innervation of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle (17% vs. 93%; p = 0.002). CONCLUSION: Successful treatment of a 3rd nerve palsy with NTSLR was not influenced by aberrant regeneration involving the levator muscle. Alternative surgical interventions should be considered when aberrant regeneration alters rectus muscle function given its adverse impact on motor outcomes with NTSLR.

BACKGROUND: Suction-curettage by arthroscopic shaver is the most effective treatment for bromhidrosis; however, postoperative complications require wound management and exhibit a high risk of hypertrophic scarring. We investigated factors affecting postoperative complications. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated data for 215 patients (430 axillae) with bromhidrosis treated with suction-curettage by arthroscopic shaver between 2011 and 2019. Cases followed for less than 1 year were excluded. Complications of hematoma or seroma, epidermis decortication, skin necrosis, and infection were recorded. Multinomial logistic analysis was used to calculate odds ratios and corresponding 95% confidence intervals for the complication of the surgery, adjusting for relevant statistically significant variables. RESULTS: Complications occurred in 52 axillae (12.1%). Epidermis decortication occurred in 24 axillae (5.6%), with a significant difference for age (P < 0.001). Hematoma occurred in 10 axillae (2.3%) with a significant difference in tumescent infiltration use (P = 0.039). Skin necrosis occurred in 16 axillae (3.7%) with a significant difference for age (P = 0.001). Infection occurred in 2 axillae (0.5%). Severe scarring occurred in 15 axillae (3.5%), with complications related to more severe skin scarring (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Older age was a risk factor for complications. Use of tumescent infiltration resulted in good postoperative pain control and less hematoma. Patients with complications presented with more severe skin scarring, but none experienced limited range of motion after massage.

Teleost fish are indispensable model organisms for comparative immunology research that should lead to an improved understanding of the general principles of vertebrate immune system design. Although numerous studies on fish immunology have been conducted, knowledge about the cell types that orchestrate piscine immune systems remains limited. Here, we generated a comprehensive atlas of immune cell types in zebrafish spleen on the basis of single-cell transcriptome profiling. We identified 11 major categories from splenic leukocyte preparations, including neutrophils, natural killer cells, macrophages/myeloid cells, T cells, B cells, hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells, mast cells, remnants of endothelial cells, erythroid cells, erythroid progenitors, and a new type of serpin-secreting cells. Notably, we derived 54 potential subsets from these 11 categories. These subsets showed differential responses to spring viremia of carp virus (SVCV) infection, implying that they have diverse roles in antiviral immunity. Additionally, we landscaped the populations with the induced expression of interferons and other virus-responsive genes. We found that trained immunity can be effectively induced in the neutrophil and M1-macrophage subsets by vaccinating zebrafish with inactivated SVCV. Our findings illustrated the complexity and heterogeneity of the fish immune system, which will help establish a new paradigm for the improved understanding of fish immunology.

Endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) are the relics of ancient retroviruses occupying a substantial fraction of vertebrate genomes. However, knowledge about the functional association of ERVs with cellular activities remains limited. Recently, we have identified approximately 3,315 ERVs from zebrafish at genome-wide level, among which 421 ERVs were actively expressed in response to the infection of Spring viraemia of carp virus (SVCV). These findings demonstrated the previously unrecognized activity of ERVs in zebrafish immunity, thereby making zebrafish an attractive model organism for deciphering the interplay among ERVs, exogenous invading viruses, and host immunity. In the present study, we investigated the functional role of an envelope protein (Env38) derived from an ERV-E5.1.38-DanRer element in zebrafish adaptive immunity against SVCV in view of its strong responsiveness to SVCV infection. This Env38 is a glycosylated membrane protein mainly distributed on MHC-II+ antigen-presenting cells (APCs). By performing blockade and knockdown/knockout assays, we found that the deficiency of Env38 markedly impaired the activation of SVCV-induced CD4+ T cells and thereby led to the inhibition of IgM+/IgZ+ B cell proliferation, IgM/IgZ Ab production, and zebrafish defense against SVCV challenge. Mechanistically, Env38 activates CD4+ T cells by promoting the formation of pMHC-TCR-CD4 complex via cross-linking MHC-II and CD4 molecules between APCs and CD4+ T cells, wherein the surface subunit (SU) of Env38 associates with the second immunoglobin domain of CD4 (CD4-D2) and the first α1 domain of MHC-IIα (MHC-IIα1). Notably, the expression and functionality of Env38 was strongly induced by zebrafish IFNφ1, indicating that env38 acts as an IFN-stimulating gene (ISG) regulated by IFN signaling. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to identify the involvement of an Env protein in host immune defense against an exogenous invading virus by promoting the initial activation of adaptive humoral immunity. It improved the current understanding of the cooperation between ERVs and host adaptive immunity.

INTRODUCTION: Stem cell-based regenerative medicine has provided an excellent opportunity to investigate therapeutic strategies and innovative treatments for Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, there is an absence of visual overviews to assess the published literature systematically. METHODS: In this review, the bibliometric approach was used to estimate the searched data on stem cell research in AD from 2004 to 2022, and we also utilized CiteSpace and VOSviewer software to evaluate the contributions and co-occurrence relationships of different countries/regions, institutes, journals, and authors as well as to discover research hot spots and encouraging future trends in this field. RESULTS: From 2004 to 2022, a total of 3,428 publications were retrieved. The number of publications and citations on stem cell research in AD has increased dramatically in the last nearly 20 years, especially since 2016. North America and Asia were the top 2 highest output regions. The leading country in terms of publications and access to collaborative networks was the USA. Centrality analysis revealed that the UCL (0.05) was at the core of the network. The Journal of Alzheimer's Disease (n = 102, 2.98%) was the most productive academic journal. The analyses of keyword burst detection indicated that exosomes, risk factors, and drug delivery only had burst recently. Citations and co-citation achievements clarified that cluster #0 induced pluripotent stem cells, #2 mesenchymal stem cells, #3 microglia, and #6 adult hippocampal neurogenesis persisted to recent time. CONCLUSION: This bibliometric analysis provides a comprehensive guide for clinicians and scholars working in this field. These analysis and results hope to provide useful information and references for future understanding of the challenges behind translating underlying stem cell biology into novel clinical therapeutic potential in AD.

There is no consensus on the duration of prophylactic antibiotic use for autologous breast reconstruction after mastectomy. We attempted to standardize the use of prophylactic antibiotics after mastectomy using a deep inferior epigastric perforator flap for the breast reconstruction procedure. Methods: This retrospective case series included 108 patients who underwent immediate breast reconstruction with a deep inferior epigastric perforator flap at the Ditmanson Medical Foundation Chia-Yi Christian Hospital between 2012 and 2019. Patients were divided into three groups based on the duration of prophylactic antibiotic administration (1, 3, and >7 days) for patients with drains. Data were analyzed between January and April 2021. Results: The prevalence of surgical site infection in the breast was 0.93% (1/108), and in the abdomen it was 0%. The patient groups did not differ by age, body mass index, smoking status, or neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Only one patient experienced surgical site infection in the breast after half-deep necrosis of the inferior epigastric perforator flap. There were no significant differences in surgical site infection based on the duration of prophylactic antibiotic use. The operation time, methods of breast surgery, volume of fluid drainage in the first 3 days of the abdominal and breast drains, and day of removal of the abdominal and breast drains did not affect surgical site infection. Conclusion: Based on these data, we do not recommend extending prophylactic antibiotics beyond 24 hours in deep inferior epigastric perforator reconstruction.

Discrete organopalladium coordination cages have shown great potential in applications ranging from molecular recognition and sensing, drug delivery to enzymatic catalysis. While many of the known organopalladium cages are homoleptic structures with regular polyhedral shapes and symmetric inner cavities, heteroleptic cages with complex architectures and new functions coming from their anisotropic cavities have received an increasing attention recently. In this concept article, we discuss a powerful combinatorial coordination self-assembly strategy toward the construction of a family of organopalladium cages, including both homoleptic and heteroleptic ones, from a given library of ligands. Within such a cage family, the heteroleptic cages often feature systematically fine-tuned structures and emergent properties, distinct from their parent homoleptic counterparts. We hope the concepts and examples provided in this article can offer some rational guidance for the design of new coordination cages toward advanced functions.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To determine success rate and complications associated with nasal transposition of the split lateral rectus muscle (NTSLR) for treating strabismus from 3rd-nerve palsy. METHODS: An international, multicentre, registry of patients with unilateral 3rd-nerve palsy treated with NTSLR was created. Patients with concurrent surgery on the contralateral eye were excluded. Primary outcome was horizontal alignment within 15 prism dioptres (PD) of orthotropia. Incidence of technical difficulties and vision-threatening complications by 6 months post-procedure were reported. RESULTS: Ninety-eight patients met inclusion criteria. Median age was 33.5 years (IQR 10.75-46). Aetiologies included congenital (31%), neoplastic (16%) and traumatic (15%). Twenty-five per cent of patients had prior ipsilateral strabismus surgery. Median exotropia decreased from 70PD preoperatively (IQR 50-90) to 1PD postoperatively (IQR 0-15.5), with a success rate of 69%. Performing concurrent superior oblique muscle tenotomy (SOT) was independently associated with success (p=0.001). Technical challenges occurred in 30% of cases, independently associated with a history of ipsilateral strabismus surgery (p=0.01). Eleven per cent of patients had vision-threatening complications, independently associated with more posterior placement of the split lateral rectus (LR) muscle (p<0.001), and most commonly transient serous choroidal effusion. Surgical placement of the split LR muscle within 4.25 mm of the medial rectus (MR) muscle insertion reduced this risk. CONCLUSION: NTSLR significantly improved primary position alignment altered by 3rd-nerve palsy. Concurrent SOT and placement of the split LR muscle ≤4.25 mm posterior to the MR muscle insertion optimised outcomes. NTSLR proved technically challenging when prior ipsilateral strabismus surgery had been performed.

OBJECTIVES: To prevent aesthetic and functional deformities, precisely closed reduction is crucial in the management of nasal fractures. Plain film radiography (PF), ultrasonography (USG), and computed tomography can help confirm the diagnosis and classification of fractures and assist in performing closed reduction. However, no study in the literature reports on precisely closed reduction assisted with PF measurements under the picture archiving and communication system (PACS). METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 153 patients with nasal bone fracture between January 2013 and December 2017. Surgeons conducted precisely closed reduction assisted with PF measurement of the distance between the fracture site and nasal tip under PACS on 34 patients (group A). Another group on 119 patients were reduced under surgeon's experience (group B). RESULTS: No significant differences in age, gender, Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Osteosynthesefragen (AO) classification, and reduction outcome were observed between group A and group B (P > .05). The operative time of the group A was significantly lower (12.50 ± 4.64 minutes) compared to group B (23.78 ± 11.20 minutes; P < .001). After adjusted age, gender, and AO classification, patients in group A scored 10.46 minutes less on the operative time than those in group B (P < .001). In addition, the severity of nasal bone fracture (AO classification, ß = 3.37, P = .002) was positive associated with the operative time. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, closed reduction in nasal bone fracture assisted with PF measurements under PACS was performed precisely, thereby effectively decreasing operative time and the occurrence of complications. This procedure requires neither the use of new instruments or C-arm nor USG or navigation experience. Moreover, reduction can be easily performed using this method, and it requires short operative time, helps achieve great reduction, less radiation exposures, and is cost-effective.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of myopia keeps increasing during the COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to map the worldwide treatment preferences of ophthalmologists managing myopia control during the first wave of the pandemic. METHODS: An online questionnaire inquiring about pharmacological and optical treatment patterns during the first half of 2020 was sent to pediatric ophthalmology as well as general ophthalmology memberships worldwide. The results among pediatric ophthalmologists were compared to a previous study we performed before the pandemic. RESULTS: A total of 2269 respondents from 94 countries were included. Most respondents were pediatric ophthalmologists (64.6%), followed by ophthalmologists from other subspecialties (32.3%). The preferred modality for all geographical regions was a combination therapy of pharmacological and optical treatments. When evaluated independently, the pharmacological treatment was more popular than the optical treatment in most regions other than East Asia (P < 0.001). Compared to a pre-pandemic questionnaire, the participation of pediatric ophthalmologists affiliated with non-university hospitals increased. Additionally, the prevalence of respondents utilizing either any type of pharmacological treatment and those that using only evidence-based treatments increased globally. Although a decline in the use of optical treatment was evident worldwide, the use of evidence-based optical treatments increased. CONCLUSION: Ophthalmologists around the world preferred a combination therapy of pharmacological and optical treatments. More pediatric ophthalmologists treated myopia progression and preferred a better evidence-based approach to control myopia. These trends reflect a positive response and more awareness of the rising prevalence of myopia due to the increased burden of myopia imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify changes in ductions following nasal transposition of the split lateral rectus muscle (NTSLR) for treating third nerve palsy. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: A single eye from each patient with third nerve palsy treated with NTSLR with ocular motility measurements. METHODS: Observation of changes in pre- and postoperative ductions. Outcome measures including patient demographic and surgical factors associated with the ability to adduct beyond the midline after NTSLR were evaluated using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of 116 patients met the inclusion criteria for this study. The NTSLR significantly decreased abduction (median of 0 limitation [interquartile range (IQR), 0-0] prior to surgery to -4 [IQR, -4 to -3] after NTSLR; p < 0.001), with a corresponding improvement in adduction (median, -5 [IQR, -5 to -4] prior to surgery to -4 [IQR, -4 to -3] after NTSLR; p < 0.001). There was no change in median supraduction or infraduction after NTSLR (p > 0.05). The ability to adduct beyond the midline after NTSLR was demonstrated in 42% of patients. Although not statistically significant, a trend toward a postoperative ability to adduct beyond the midline was seen in patients who had concurrent superior oblique muscle tenotomy (odds ratio [OR] = 5.08; 95% CI, 0.91-40.9) or who were designated with partial rather than complete third nerve palsy (OR = 2.29; 95% CI, 0.82-6.70). CONCLUSIONS: NTSLR improves the horizontal midline positioning of eyes with third nerve palsy. Most eyes lose the ability to abduct, but some regain a modest ability to adduct while vertical ductions remain unchanged.
