RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Persistent olfactory dysfunction (OD) is a common symptom following SARS-CoV-2 infection that can greatly impact quality of life (QoL). Because coping strategies have been shown to moderate the effect of disease symptoms on functional and affective outcomes, this study aims to determine whether specific coping strategies are associated with and moderate QoL outcomes. METHODOLOGY: Participants with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection underwent psychophysical olfactory testing with Sniffin' Sticks and completed questionnaires to elicit subjective olfactory function, coping strategies, olfactory-specific QoL, general QoL, and mental health. RESULTS: There were 93 participants included in the study. Olfactory specific QoL scores were significantly worse among individuals with subjective and psychophysically measured OD compared to those with subjective and psychophysically confirmed normosmia. Olfactory-specific QoL, general QoL, and anxiety symptom scores were positively correlated with avoidant and disengagement coping among individuals with subjective and psychophysically measured OD. Depression symptom scores were positively correlated with avoidant and disengagement coping and negatively correlated with approach and engagement coping. There were no significant moderating effects on the association between olfactory performance and QoL or mental health screening assessment. CONCLUSIONS: Approach and engagement coping mechanisms are associated with improved depression, whereas avoidant and disengagement coping tracks with worse QoL and mental health screening assessment, offering an opportunity to counsel patients accordingly.

RESUMO

Depression may be a risk factor for overweight status, but mechanisms involved in this relationship are unclear. This study explored behavioral factors involved in the relationship between adolescent depression symptoms and adult overweight status. A population-based cohort of female participants in Project EAT (n=1035) was followed over 10 years and reported on psychological functioning, weight status and eating and activity patterns in early/middle adolescence (1999=Time 1; T1), middle adolescence/early young adulthood (2004=Time 2; T2) and early/middle young adulthood (2009=Time 3; T3). Structural equation models were fit which included T1 depression scores predicting overweight status at T3, with T2 fruit and vegetable consumption, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and binge eating examined as mediators. There were small but significant effects of T1 depression scores predicting an increased likelihood of T3 overweight status (standardized estimate=0.038; P=0.007), and of T2 binge eating mediating the relation between T1 depression and T3 overweight status (standardized indirect effect estimate=0.036; P=0.009). Binge eating may be one pathway to overweight among depressed females, suggesting that recognition and treatment of eating pathology in individuals with depression may help prevent overweight. Examination of other behavioral (and non-behavioral) factors explaining the relationship between depression and overweight is warranted.

RESUMO

This study describes an investigation using tropical water lilies (Nymphaea spontanea) to remove hexavalent chromium from aqueous solutions and electroplating waste. The results show that water lilies are capable of accumulating substantial amount of Cr(VI), up to 2.119 mg g(-1) from a 10 mg l(-1) solution. The roots of the plant accumulated the highest amount of Cr(VI) followed by leaves and petioles, indicating that roots play an important role in the bioremediation process. The maturity of the plant exerts a great effect on the removal and accumulation of Cr(VI). Plants of 9 weeks old accumulated the most Cr(VI) followed by those of 6 and 3 weeks old. The results also show that removal of Cr(VI) by water lilies is more efficient when the metal is present singly than in the presence of Cu(II) or in waste solution. This may be largely associated with more pronounced phytotoxicity effect on the biochemical changes in the plants and saturation of binding sites. Significant toxicity effect on the plant was evident as shown in the reduction of chlorophyll, protein and sugar contents in plants exposed to Cr(VI) in this investigation.

RESUMO

The Magnetospheric Imaging Instrument (MIMI) onboard the Cassini spacecraft observed the saturnian magnetosphere from January 2004 until Saturn orbit insertion (SOI) on 1 July 2004. The MIMI sensors observed frequent energetic particle activity in interplanetary space for several months before SOI. When the imaging sensor was switched to its energetic neutral atom (ENA) operating mode on 20 February 2004, at approximately 10(3) times Saturn's radius RS (0.43 astronomical units), a weak but persistent signal was observed from the magnetosphere. About 10 days before SOI, the magnetosphere exhibited a day-night asymmetry that varied with an approximately 11-hour periodicity. Once Cassini entered the magnetosphere, in situ measurements showed high concentrations of H+, H2+, O+, OH+, and H2O+ and low concentrations of N+. The radial dependence of ion intensity profiles implies neutral gas densities sufficient to produce high loss rates of trapped ions from the middle and inner magnetosphere. ENA imaging has revealed a radiation belt that resides inward of the D ring and is probably the result of double charge exchange between the main radiation belt and the upper layers of Saturn's exosphere.

RESUMO

Fusarium head blight of barley (Hordeum vulgare) is a devastating disease in many countries. We undertook a study to identify barley cultivars, if any, that are resistant to Fusarium head blight and deoxynivalenol (DON) accumulation and to determine if DON concentration is correlated with other plant traits in Eastern Canada and China. Barley cultivars were grown in the field under artificial inoculation conditions at two locations (Charlottetown and Ottawa) in Canada during two summers and at Hangzhou in China during two winters. Seed samples were collected for DON analysis from the barley performance trial at five locations in Ontario. None of the 64 barley cultivars were immune to Fusarium head blight infection. Two-row cultivars, however, were significantly more resistant to Fusarium head blight infection and DON accumulation than six-row cultivars. Three cultivars (Island, AC Alberte, and Chevron) were found to be most resistant, as they were consistently low in Fusarium head blight incidence and DON concentration in both Eastern Canada and China. In six-row barley, DON concentration was correlated positively with Fusarium head blight incidence at both Charlottetown and Ottawa, and it was negatively correlated with plant height at Ottawa. DON concentration and heading date were not consistently correlated. Barley yellow dwarf and powdery mildew appeared to have very little effect on Fusarium head blight infection. Susceptibility to DON accumulation did not result in low yield under natural infection conditions in Ontario. Cultivar × location interactions for DON concentration, Fusarium head blight incidence, and heading date were significant.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Gated single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with automated methods allows the quantitative assessment of left ventricular function and perfusion; however, its accuracy must be defined for patients with large earlier infarctions and severe rest perfusion defects, in whom the estimation of endocardial and epicardial borders might be more difficult, even with automated edge-detection techniques. METHODS AND RESULTS: We prospectively compared the automated measurements of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and volumes from rest-injected gated Technetium 99m (Tc99m) perfusion SPECT with equilibrium radionuclide angiocardiography (ERNA) in 62 patients and the assessment of regional function with echocardiography in 22 patients. Forty-six patients had an earlier myocardial infarction (mean defect size, 34% of left ventricle; SD, 12.7%; range, 8% to 56%); 27 patients had large defects (> or = 20% of left ventricle; LVEF range, 8% to 75%). LVEF, as determined with Cedars-Sinai software (quantitative gated SPECT), correlated well with ERNA (r = 0.941; y = 1.003x + 1.15; P<.0001; SE of the estimate = 6.3%; mean difference -1.3% for LVEF) in the entire study population and in the subgroups of patients with an earlier infarction, severe defects, and large infarctions (> or = 20% of the left ventricle). A correlation existed between gated SPECT and ERNA volumes (r = 0.882, y = 1.040x - 14.7, P<.0001 for end-diastolic volume; r = 0.954, y = 1.147x - 13.9, P<.0001 for end-systolic volumes with the count-ratio technique), but with wider limits of agreement. The exact segmental score agreement between gated SPECT and echocardiography for regional function was 79.8% (281 of 352, kappa = 0.682). CONCLUSIONS: Automated gated SPECT provides an accurate assessment of ejection fraction and regional function, even in the presence of an earlier myocardial infarction with large perfusion defects and significant left ventricular dysfunction.

RESUMO

In a series of experiments, the barrier integrity of single and double vinyl and latex examination gloves were tested for dye and water leaks after being placed under stress. A total of 886 examination gloves (385 vinyl: single, 199; double, 186; and 501 latex: single, 290; double, 211) were tested with a standardized clinical protocol designed to mimic patient care activities. Leakage rates for single or double gloving were significantly higher for vinyl than for latex gloves. Single vinyl gloves were significantly more likely to leak than were double vinyl gloves (51.3% and 19.7%, p < 0.0001). However, there were essentially no differences in leakage rates for single or double latex gloves (4.1% and 3.8%, p = 1). Significantly higher rates of leakage were identified with the water leak test than with the dye test for vinyl (p < 0.001) but not for latex (p = 0.22) gloves. For vinyl but not latex gloves, there were significant differences in leakage rates by brand. We conclude that double gloving offers little advantage during routine procedures associated with minimal stress to the gloves or when latex gloves are worn.

RESUMO

The emphasis on cow records in Malaysian dairy extension programmes reflects the importance of herd fertility in the economics of dairying. Manual record keeping has not been able to make an impact on management due to difficulties experienced in quality control of the data and in analysing the data to produce useful information for farm managers. Computerised recording systems have been in use in Malaysia since 1985, both on government farms and in the small-holder dairy sector. The aim of both systems is firstly to improve farm efficiency by the provision of information to managers and extension workers and secondly to provide information for departmental planning purposes. The systems used in Malaysia are outlined, and the results over the first three years of operation are summarised.

RESUMO

A study was conducted to regenerate plants from explant tissue and from callus culture of zigzag clover (Trifolium medium). Petiole segments from two strains of zigzag clover were cultured on L2 or in SL2 media. Shoots were regenerated via organogenesis from petiole segments of both strains of zigzag clover. Direct shoot regeneration was noticed as early as eight days after the initiation of cultures. Shoots were also regenerated via somatic embryogenesis from petiole-derived calli of the two strains on L2 and SL2 media. Regenerated plants have normal morphological characteristics.

RESUMO

For a group practice to be successful compatibility of the members of the group is of paramount importance; other important considerations must include mutual respect and common objectives. Despite any high ideals, adequate reward for productivity is always expected by members of the group and any agreement must include an equitable financial distribution. In Singapore with a dentist population of 588, only 97 are involved in group practices. The assistantship type of practice is popular among new graduates who do not have the finance to invest in single-handed practices. Associateships do exist but in view of the increasing over supply of dentists it is envisaged that this type of grouping may not be too common in the future. There are 19 partnership practices in Singapore; a personal example is described to illustrate a successful group practice.

RESUMO

Both doubled haploid (DH) and single seed descent (SSD) methods were used to derive homozygous lines from two crosses of barley. The frequency distributions of grain yield, heading date, and plant height of the DH and SSD lines were compared by the Mann-Whitney U test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov twosample test and Wald-Wolfowitz runs test. It was found that the DH lines distributed in the same manner as the SSD lines with respect to the three characters. The results indicated that although the SSD method had more opportunity for recombination than the DH method, it did not produce a sample of recombinants which differed significantly from the DH sample; thus both methods were equally efficient for use in deriving homozygous lines from F1 hybrids in a relatively short time.

RESUMO

By using a doubled-haploid population derived from F2 plants, additive and additive X additive genetic variances, as well as the number of segregating genes, can be estimated. An F2-derived doubled-haploid population may contain almost 50% more of the best recombinant than an F1-derived population. However, the best recombinant occurs in the same frequency in the two populations when there is no linkage between genes. The difference in the frequency of the best recombinant between F2- and F3-derived populations is small. This implies that the doubled-haploid method using F2 plants provides only slightly less opportunity for recombination than the conventional breeding methods of self-pollinating crops. In the absence of additive epistasis, a weighted mean of recombination values can be estimated using an F2-derived population and its parental lines. When additive epistasis is present, it can be estimated from doubled-haploid populations derived from two backcrosses. Studies on the linkage of quantitative characters are needed for determining whether doubled haploids should be produced from F2 or from F1 plants in a breeding program.

RESUMO

In a diallel cross analysis using doubled haploids, both additive and additive x additive genetic variances can be estimated. In addition, mean and variance of recombination values can also be estimated. Linkage affects the covariance between half-sibs the most, the covariance between grandparents and grand offspring to an intermediate degree and the covariance between full sibs the least. The covariance of parent and offspring is not affected by linkage.

RESUMO

The effect of gene association (or dispersion) and linkage on the estimation of genetic variances in a diallel experiment involving doubled haploid lines is evaluated. It is shown that the estimates of the additive and the additive X additive genetic variances, as obtained by Choo et al. (1979), are biased if genes are linked or are not independently distributed in the parents. However, this bias only occurs in the presence of interaction between homozygous loci. Gene association (or dispersion) and linkage, if present, can be detected by comparing the parental vs the crosses mean, the parental vs the doubled haploid lines variance, and the among vs the within crosses variance.

RESUMO

An analysis is derived for a diallel experiment in which each cross is represented by a number of homozygous Unes developed by the doubled haploid method. Both additive and additive x additive genetic variances can be estimated with this analysis. A population-improvement scheme involving the doubled haploid or single seed descent methods is also proposed.
