RESUMO

Low informant agreement is of particular concern in clinical settings, since diagnoses and interventions are largely based on reports from parents and/or youths. This study explores youth-parent consistencies in an at-risk sample of youths (n = 42), several from immigrant and refugee families, all with stressful background experiences. Data from a community sample (n = 165) was used to contrast the clinical results. Results showed that correlations between clinical youths and parents were within the same range as those in the community sample. Consistencies concerning absolute level of behavior were higher in the clinical sample. However, interesting differences in informant consistencies were found on difficulties and resources between the two samples. This study adds to the picture that there is no simple relationship between severity of behavior deviance and informant agreement. Asking about behavioral resources as well as difficulties may provide valuable additional information regarding differences in the perspectives of at-risk youths and parents.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to measure and describe postural aberrations in chronic and acute low back pain in search of predictors of low back pain. The sample included 59 subjects recruited to the following three groups: chronic, acute, or no low back pain. Diagnoses included disc disease, mechanical back pain, and osteoarthritis. Lumbar lordosis, thoracic kyphosis, head position, shoulder position, shoulder height, pelvic tilt, and leg length were measured using a photographic technique. In standing, chronic pain patients exhibited an increased lumbar lordosis compared with controls (p < .05). Acute patients had an increased thoracic kyphosis and a forward head position compared with controls (p < .05). In sitting, acute patients had an increased thoracic kyphosis compared with controls (p < .05). These postural parameters identified discrete postural profiles but had moderate value as predictors of low back pain. Therefore other unidentified factors are also important in the prediction of low back pain.

RESUMO

Pseudomonas aeruginosa was able to grow in high levels of an amphoteric and a quaternary ammonium compound following repeated subculturing in increasing concentrations of the biocides. Resistance was acquired and lost gradually. Adaptation to both biocides resulted in cross resistance to biguanides but whereas quaternary adapted cells were resistant to a range of quaternary ammonium compounds, the amphoteric adapted organisms were not. Amphoteric adapted cells had increased hydrophobicity and exhibited ultrastructural modifications which suggested that the outer membrane might be involved in resistance. Both amphoteric and quaternary ammonium adapted organisms showed changes in their fatty acid profiles consistent with outer membrane modification but the changes were different in each case. The mechanisms involved in biocide resistance are discussed.
