RESUMO

Ferroic materials on the verge of forming ferroic glasses exhibit heightened functionality that is often attributed to competing long- and short-range correlations. However, the physics underlying these enhancements is not well understood. The Ni45Co5Mn36.6In13.4 Heusler alloy is on the edge of forming both spin and strain glasses and exhibits magnetic field-induced shape memory and large magnetocaloric effects, making it a candidate for multicaloric cooling applications. We show using neutron scattering that localized magnon-phonon hybrid modes, which are inherently spread across reciprocal space, act as a bridge between phonons and magnons and result in substantial magnetic field-induced shifts in the phonons, triple the caloric response, and alter phase stability. We attribute these modes to the localization of phonons and magnons by antiphase boundaries coupled to magnetic domains. Because the interplay between short- and long-range correlations is common near ferroic glassy states, our work provides general insights on how glassiness enhances function.

Measurements have been carried out to compare stress-induced martensite stabilization aged (SIM-aged) and as grown shape memory Ni53Mn25Ga22 single crystals with the means of simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and acoustic emission (AE). Contrary to expectations, the position of the hysteresis practically did not change, whilst the width of the hysteresis increased, and the forward and reverse transitions became sharper in the SIM-aged sample. The energy distributions of acoustic hits showed regular power law behaviour and the energy exponents were slightly different for heating and cooling; this asymmetry had different signs for the SIM-aged and as grown samples. During heating, in accordance with the sharper transitions observed in the DSC runs, two well-marked jumps could be seen on the plot of cumulative number of the acoustic emission events. Therefore, these were attributed to high sudden jumps in the phase transition during heating observed in the DSC. The effect of the SIM-aging on the transformation entropy was also investigated and it was found that it was about 36% less in the case of the SIM-aged sample.

Fe50Ni28Co17Al11.5Ta2.5 single crystals oriented along the [001] direction were investigated in order to establish the influence of two-step aging conditions on superelastic properties. The homogenized and quenched single crystalline material was subjected to a combination of high-temperature and low-temperature heat treatment at 973 K for 0.5 h and at 723 K for various aging times, respectively. As a result, fine and coherent γ' precipitates were formed. Using diffraction of high energy synchrotron radiation, the volume fraction of γ' precipitates was computed while their size was determined by high resolution TEM analysis. Compared with one-step heat treatment, the two-step aging process enables control of the precipitate size in a more accurate way. Moreover, it allows one to obtain a higher volume fraction of precipitates without increasing their size significantly. The obtained coherent γ' precipitates ranged in size from 5 to 8 nm; that considerably improved mechanical properties. The highest superelastic response was obtained for single crystals aged at 973 K for 0.5 h followed by aging at 723 K for 3 h. The single crystals treated with such conditions exhibited a superelastic strain of 15% in which the mechanical martensite stabilization was substantially suppressed.
