RESUMO

Reports of bollworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), larvae feeding in white flowers of Bollgard cotton have been relatively common since the commercialization of this technology in 1996. Field studies were conducted in Louisiana to determine if differences in bollworm larval behavior occuron non-Bollgard (cultivar 'Deltapine 5415') and Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), Bollgard ('NuCOTN 33B') cottons. Larvae were placed on the terminal foliage of either single cotton plants or on all plants within 1-m row micro-plots. On preflowering cotton plants, significantly more bollworms moved from the site of infestation (terminal) on Bollgard plants compared with that on non-Bollgard plants. On individual flowering plants, the number of nodes larvae moved from the terminal and the number of infested bolls was greater on Bollgard cotton plants. Similar differences between Bollgard and non-Bollgard plants in the percentage of infested terminals and squares were observed at 48-h after infestation when 1-m rows were infested. These data will be used to refine scouting protocols for bollworm larvae on Bollgard cotton.

RESUMO

Field tests were conducted in northeastern Louisiana to determine the effects of infestations by Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) on cotton bolls of varying ages. First instars were caged on bolls of nontransgenic ('Deltapine 5415') or transgenic Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner variety kurstaki (Bt) ('NuCOTN 33B') cotton from 29 June to 11 August during 1997 and 1998. Deltapine 5415 bolls that accumulated 179 (7.2 d), 281 (11.2 d), and 253 (10.1 d) heat units beyond anthesis were safe from bollworm-induced abscission at 72 h after infestation, 7 d after infestation, and at the time of harvest, respectively. NuCOTN 33B bolls that accumulated 157 (6.3 d), 185 (7.4 d), and 180 (7.2 d) heat units beyond anthesis were safe from bollworm-induced abscission at 72 h after infestation, 7 d after infestation, and at the time of harvest, respectively. Bollworm larvae reduced seedcotton weights of Deltapine 5415 bolls that accumulated between 58.5 (2.3 d) and 350.5 (14.0 d) heat units beyond anthesis. Seedcotton weights of NuCOTN 33B bolls that accumulated between 0 and 281 (11.2 d) heat units beyond anthesis were reduced by bollworm injury. Deltapine 5415 and NuCOTN 33B bolls that accumulated 426.5 (17.1 d) and 299.5 (12.0 d) heat units beyond anthesis, respectively, before infestation were not injured by first-instar bollworm larvae. These data provide information about late-season insecticide termination strategies for bollworms on nontransgenic and transgenic Bt-cotton. This, in turn, will help pest managers determine when insecticides are no longer economical during the late season.

RESUMO

We reviewed the population of a surgical intensive care unit from July 1, 1987 to June 30, 1988, adjusting for severity of illness using the APACHE II system. Nineteen different departments admitted a total of 613 patients to the surgical intensive care unit. Predicted mortality was 22.9%; actual mortality was 15.7%. APACHE II generated reports which included analysis by age, mortality risk, department, primary physician, and diagnosis. We recommend reporting intensive care unit outcome by APACHE criteria to allow more meaningful comparisons of data and standardization of quality assurance programs. Finally, we present a critical review of the current APACHE II system and describe developments to be included in APACHE III.

RESUMO

L-Lactic acid and D,L-lactic acid infusion in ponies resulted in metabolic acidosis with high anion gap (AG). Increased AG was explained entirely by increased blood L- and D-lactate concentrations. Hydrochloric acid infusion caused metabolic acidosis with decreased AG. Saline (NaCl) infusion caused mild metabolic acidosis, with no significant change in AG. Plasma K+ concentration was decreased by all types of infusions, with a maximum of 0.50, 0.25, 0.40, 0.50 mmol/L below baseline at the end of infusion in the L-lactic acid-, D,L-lactic acid-, HCl-, and NaCl-infused ponies, respectively. Only hydrochloric acid had a tendency to increase plasma K+ concentration. Hypophosphatemia developed in NaCl- and HCl-infused ponies, but not in the D,L-lactic acid-infused ponies. Serum inorganic phosphate concentration in L-lactic acid-infused ponies increased initially, but was significantly (P less than 0.05) lower than values in the other ponies at 4 hours after onset of infusion. In ponies, the effect of acidemia on plasma K+ and serum inorganic phosphate concentrations was similar to that reported for other species. Changes were small in magnitude and depended on the nature of the acid anion. Results indicate that large changes in plasma K+ and serum inorganic phosphate concentrations during acidosis are probably not a direct result of acidemia.

RESUMO

Hypertonic NaHCO3 infusion caused blood volume expansion, increased blood bicarbonate concentration, and delayed the onset of hypophosphatemia in ponies with endotoxemia. However, NaHCO3 infusion did not normalize blood pH, and it increased blood L-lactate concentration, and caused hypokalemia, hypernatremia, and hyperosmolality. The deleterious effects of NaHCO3 infusion in endotoxemia ponies outweighed the beneficial effects. The role of hypertonic NaHCO3 given IV for treatment of endotoxemia in equids must be reevaluated.

RESUMO

The parity rates of Tabanus fuscicostatus Hine populations were monitored at two areas of a wildlife management complex for 24 d using canopy traps baited with dry ice. Overall, 1,235 flies were dissected. Three cows placed in Area T were sprayed with 0.05% fenvalerate, and three cows placed in Area U were not sprayed. The parity rate in Area T decreased from 43.6 to 31.2% following the introduction of cattle. Conversely, the parity rate in Area U increased from 30.3 to 43.7% following the introduction of cattle. These results indicate that a segment of T. fuscicostatus populations returns to the previous location for a subsequent blood meal.

RESUMO

Seasonal changes in density and spatial distribution of Onchocerca cervicalis microfilariae were studied in ventral-midline skin of 15 infected pony mares in southern Louisiana. Triple running mean analysis of data over a 13-mo period indicated that a distinct pattern exists in total microfilariae population density and in microfilariae occurrence in different levels of the dermis. Microfilariae density reaches peak levels in the spring followed by a 58% decrease in the summer, a 19% increase in the fall, and a decrease to the lowest numbers in the winter. Microfilariae were found in all levels of the skin during the spring, summer, and fall but were not found in the superficial layers of the dermis during the winter months. The population density of Culicoides variipennis, a demonstrated vector of O. cervicalis, appeared to have seasonal fluctuations similar to the changes in microfilarial density. Harmonic wave analysis of microfilariae density data in individual ponies showed that all individuals did not follow the population trend.

RESUMO

Blood L lactate concentration and anion gap were measured in 32 horses suspected of having metabolic acidosis. There was good linear correlation between these variables (r = 0.90791, P less than 0.0001) and both were good prognostic indicators. Anion gap was a good indicator of the presence but not the severity of L lactic acidosis and was a slightly better prognostic indicator. The ability to predict survival was not improved by the measurement of L lactate in addition to anion gap.

RESUMO

Increased anion gap (AG) was due, in part, to L-lactic acidosis in 14 of 14 horses with intestinal disorders. In a few horses, increased whole blood concentrations of D-lactate made a minor contribution to the AG. However, the increase in AG was often greater than the sum of the increases in these 2 acid anions. This unexplained increase was not a result of increases in whole blood pyruvate, 3-hydroxybutyrate, or acetoacetate concentrations or serum albumin or phosphate concentrations. Identification of other anions causing increased AG could lead to better understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of metabolic imbalances in critically ill horses.

RESUMO

Hookworm infected dogs had higher blood basophil counts than hookworm negative dogs. Dogs with occult heartworm infection (i.e., without microfilaremia) had higher blood neutrophil counts than heartworm negative dogs. The percentage of eosinophils in peripheral lymph nodes was higher in heartworm infected, microfilaremic dogs than in both occult infected dogs and heartworm negative dogs. Heartworm or intestinal parasitic infection had no other significant effects on hematologic parameters or peripheral lymph node cytology.

RESUMO

The ability of 14 serum biochemical assays to predict the presence of hepatic necrosis induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) (centrilobular necrosis), allyl alcohol (periportal necrosis), and 1-napththylisothiocyanate (ANIT) (biliary duct necrosis) was evaluated in rats. Results of these assays were analyzed using multivariate discriminant analysis to determine: which assays have the highest predictive value for discriminating between control and treated rats, and which assays would discriminate between rats in the three treatment groups. Individual assays with the highest predictive value for CCl4-induced lesions versus controls were glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH), sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). Assays with the highest predictive value for ANIT-induced lesions were GDH, 5'-nucleotidase (5'NT), and ALT. Assays the highest predictive value for ANIT-induced lesions were GDH, 5'-nucleotidase (5'NT), and ALT. Assays with the highest predictive value for allyl alcohol-induced lesions were an ALT/isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICD) ratio, GDH, and ALT. Canonical correlation coefficients for each assay ranged from 0.98 to 0.91 with 95-100% correct group membership predictions (treated versus control) provided by each assay. Individual assays were not highly predictive for determining group membership among all three treatment groups. A two assay combination of 5'NT and an ALT/ICD ratio provided 100% correct group membership predictions and had high canonical correlations (f1 = 0.95, f2 = 0.83).

RESUMO

Two classes of non-handicapped and two classes of handicapped children (n = 67), aged 5 to 12 years, took part in a study designed to determine whether a regular or specially designed physical education program suited their individual needs best. Initially receiving instruction with class peers each child was administered the 14-item short-form Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency. Discriminant analysis of the data indicated that two of the three functions were significant, together accounting for 93% of the variance. For each significant function fewer than half the test items contributed substantial discriminatory power. Over-all, 75% of the subjects were correctly classified but misclassifications occurred in each class; different placements seem appropriate for non-handicapped and handicapped children.
