Despite the passage of over 30 years since its discovery, the importance of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) on the health and longevity of infected domestic cats is hotly debated amongst feline experts. Notwithstanding the absence of good quality information, Australian and New Zealand (NZ) veterinarians should aim to minimise the exposure of cats to FIV. The most reliable way to achieve this goal is to recommend that all pet cats are kept exclusively indoors, or with secure outdoor access (e.g., cat enclosures, secure gardens), with FIV testing of any in-contact cats. All animal holding facilities should aim to individually house adult cats to limit the spread of FIV infection in groups of animals that are stressed and do not have established social hierarchies. Point-of-care (PoC) FIV antibody tests are available in Australia and NZ that can distinguish FIV-infected and uninfected FIV-vaccinated cats (Witness™ and Anigen Rapid™). Although testing of whole blood, serum or plasma remains the gold standard for FIV diagnosis, PoC testing using saliva may offer a welfare-friendly alternative in the future. PCR testing to detect FIV infection is not recommended as a screening procedure since a negative PCR result does not rule out FIV infection and is only recommended in specific scenarios. Australia and NZ are two of three countries where a dual subtype FIV vaccine (Fel-O-Vax® FIV) is available and offers a further avenue for disease prevention. Since FIV vaccination only has a reported field effectiveness of 56% in Australia, and possibly lower in NZ, FIV-vaccinated cats should undergo annual FIV testing prior to annual FIV re-vaccination using a suitable PoC kit to check infection has not occurred in the preceding year. With FIV-infected cats, clinicians should strive to be even more thorough than usual at detecting early signs of disease. The most effective way to enhance the quality of life and life expectancy of FIV-infected cats is to optimise basic husbandry and to treat any concurrent conditions early in the disease course. Currently, no available drugs are registered for the treatment of FIV infection. Critically, the euthanasia of healthy FIV-infected cats, and sick FIV-infected cats without appropriate clinical investigations, should not occur.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 5th Assessment Report (2014) assessed the state of climate change and health knowledge, globally through the Human Health: Impacts, Adaptation, and Co-Benefits Chapter and regionally through chapters, such as the North America Chapter. With IPCC's 6th Assessment Report scheduled to be released in 2021-22, we asked: how has climate change and health research in North America advanced since the IPCC's 5th Assessment Report in 2014? Specifically, we systematically identified and examined trends in the extent, range, and nature of climate-health research conducted in North America. We used a scoping review methodology to systematically identify literature and map publication trends. A search string was used to search five academic databases. Two independent reviewers first screened titles and abstracts, and then the full texts of articles for relevance. Research articles and reviews using systematic methods published since 2013 were eligible for inclusion, and no language restrictions were applied. To be included, articles had to measure and link climatic variables or hazards to health outcomes in North America. Relevant articles were analysed using descriptive statistics to explore publication trends. The number of climate-health articles has significantly increased since the last IPCC Assessment Report. Published research about climate change impacts, heat-related mortality and morbidity, and respiratory illness taking place in urban centres and in the USA continue to dominate the North American climate-health literature, reflected by the high proportion of articles published. Important research gaps on previously neglected climate-sensitive health outcomes, however, are beginning to be filled, including climate change impacts on mental health, nutrition, and foodborne disease. We also observed progress in research that included future projections of climate-health risks; however, projection research is still relatively nascent and under-studied for many climate-sensitive health outcomes in North America, and would benefit from considering social and demographic variables in models. Important research disparities in geographical coverage were noted, including research gaps in Canada and Mexico, and in rural and remote regions. Overall, these publication trends suggest an improved understanding of exposure-response relationships and future projections of climate-health risks for many climate-sensitive health outcomes in North America, which is promising and provides an evidence-base to inform the IPCC 6th Assessment Report. Despite these advancements and considering the urgent policy and practice implications, more research is needed to deepen our understanding of climate-sensitive health outcomes, as well as examine new arising issues that have limited evidence-bases. In particular, transdisciplinary and cross-sector research, that includes the social sciences, examining current and future climate-health adaptation, mitigation, and the adaptation-mitigation nexus should become a top priority for research, given the urgent need for this evidence to inform climate change policies, actions, and interventions.

Job analysis allows for the development of a compensation system. Job descriptions summarize the most important duties. Performance appraisals help reward outstanding work.

Norepinephrine (NE, 10(-6) M) stimulated melatonin accumulation in the incubation medium of rat (but not Syrian hamster) pineals taken at the end of the light phase. However, NE elevated melatonin accumulation in the medium of pineals taken after 20 min of light exposure of animals of either species at 6 h into the 10-h dark phase. A dose response to 10(-7)-10(-5) M NE was observed in both the medium and pineals upon incubation of pineals taken from rats at 4 h into the light phase and from hamsters after 20 min light exposure at 6 h into the dark phase. Approximately 95% of the melatonin present was in the medium. The incubation time was 4 h in all cases. Subcutaneous injection of 1 microgram/g NE (either at the end of the light phase or after 30 min of light at 6 h into the dark phase) did not stimulate in vivo Syrian hamster pineal melatonin content determined 1 or 2 h after injection, whether the hamsters were placed in light or darkness after the injection. However, after 30 min of light beginning at 6 h into dark, injection of 5 micrograms/g desipramine (DMI, a blocker of catecholamine uptake into nerve endings) allowed a dramatic hamster pineal melatonin response to additional injection of 1 microgram/g NE, observed at 1 and 2 h in light after injection. A small effect of DMI alone was seen. DMI also potentiated the effect of NE (each 10(-6) M) on melatonin accumulation in the medium of incubated hamster pineals taken after a short light exposure at night. No significant stimulatory effect of NE and/or DMI was seen in vivo or in vitro near the middle of the light phase. Measurement of melatonin in the incubation medium is a useful method for studying pineal function. The Syrian hamster pineal has rhythm of sensitivity to NE (sensitivity evident at night) and even at night is protected by neuronal uptake from circulating NE-induced stimulation of melatonin production. NE appears to be the neurotransmitter for stimulation of pineal melatonin production in the Syrian hamster. The sensitivity rhythm and uptake protection might provide specificity of control of the nightly melatonin signal by reducing the chance of a melatonin response during the day or a response to circulating catecholamines from general sympathetic stimuli.
