RESUMO

OBJECTIVE AND METHOD: To analyze the development of the number of cervical cancer cases and those who died of the disease in Montenegro. We used data on the number of cases and deaths over a eight-year period (2000-2007). RESULTS: In Montenegro 550 women developed cervical cancer in that period, which is 45% of all cancers affecting the female genital organs. In the first five years, the average disease rate was 19.52/100,000, but in the last three years it amounted to 25,61/100,000 (around 24% higher). The trend suggests significant growth. The average mortality rate was 4.2/100,000. The trend suggests very slight growth. The majority of cases were aged between 40 and 49 years (196 cases out of 550 or 35.64%). CONCLUSION: Almost 2/3 of the cases (64.19%) were aged between 40 and 59 years. There is a need to organize screening of the entire female population aged between 20 and 65-70 years. There is also a need to establish a central registry for malignant diseases in Montenegro.

RESUMO

A survey of residents of a community surrounding a lead smelter has revealed an alarming incidence of elevated blood lead and erythrocyte protoporphyrin concentrations. In particular, children who were less than 3 yr of age were severely affected. Of those children tested in December, 1980, 35% had blood lead concentrations between 50-69 microgram/dl, while an additional 12% had concentrations greater than or equal to 70 microgram/dl, and are, therefore, at risk for severe neurological sequelae.

RESUMO

Basic biodemographic tendencies in human reproduction in the Kosovo region are analysed. The natality level is recorded to be high (1972--1978: 37.0--35.3 per 1000 inhabitants), along with the low values of the proportion of abortions per 1000 women of the generative age (26.6--24.8), the proportion of abortions per 1000 liveborn children (157--154.1), and the proportion of abortions per 1000 inhabitants (5.8--5.7). The authors concluded that the problem of human reproduction in the country has been consequently and many-sidedly regulated by the country's highest legislative acts. In their opinion, the introduction of sterilization by law would be an inappropriate instrument, incapable of replacing social, medical, economic, cultural, and other measures; its use should be limited only within the boundary of medical indications.
