RESUMO

This single-group experimental study examined the effectiveness of NEWSTART, an 8-week health promotion program among adults in an Adventist Faith Community. Participants had a significant reduction in diastolic blood pressure [Formula: see text] with a moderate effect size (Cohen d = 0.68), reduction of daily sugar-sweetened beverage intake [Formula: see text] with a large effect size (Cohen d = 0.96), and an improvement in weekly moderate intensity exercise [Formula: see text] with a large effect size (Cohen d = .83). Participants met the fruit and vegetable intake recommendations and applying program principles to reduce chronic disease risk factors.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to analyze RN to BSN students' perceptions of their abilities to meet program outcomes through their clinical experiences with a clinical teaching associate and after assuming responsibility for planning and directing clinical learning activities. A mixed-methods approach was used. Most students (87 percent) reported achievement of program outcome measures. Students demonstrated real-world learning and application through clinical experiences and successfully met program outcomes.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Sexual assault services cost Americans more than $420,000,000 annually for medical and mental health services. Personal costs include lost wages, lost quality of life, and victim assistance. Public costs include police work, legal adjudication, and sanctioning (penalties). In 2014, an estimated 284,350 adult women were sexually assaulted in the United States. Sexual assault is significantly underreported by those who are assaulted. Upon determination that sexual assault services in a clinic setting were nonexistent, services for sexual assault were developed and implemented in a clinic setting in a Midwestern state. The purpose of clinic services was to provide support, assessment, and forensic examinations for adult women and to evaluate the number of women receiving services. A quality improvement approach was used to determine how and when sexually assault victims received sexual assault services. Persons who have been sexually assaulted vary in gender and age; however, for the purpose of the pilot project, implementation initially included services to women over 18 years of age. Although the number of female patients receiving care was low in the inaugural clinic during the implementation and evaluation period, the services provision remains a viable option for women who experienced sexual assault in a community that previously had no access to clinic services.

RESUMO

As global warming is taking effect, the number of natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornados, flooding, drought, and wildfires is increasing. The purpose of this article is to address the impacts of climate change on human health, using a model developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The effects of natural disasters on mental health, and actions nurses can take to help build strong, resilient communities, are discussed in detail. Increasing awareness and building resilience will improve health outcomes. Strong social connections are a key component of community resilience. Strengthening the infrastructure of communities can mitigate the impact of climate changes.

RESUMO

Spiritual care is an important component of holistic nursing care. To implement spiritual care, the nurse must assess, diagnose, and respond to the needs of each patient and her or his significant others. Meeting the spiritual care needs of the patient can lead to physical healing, reduction of pain, and personal growth. Nurses providing spiritual care experience lower stress and less burnout.
