RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Large language models (LLMs) can support nursing education but pose questions of validity, reliability, and ethical use. This article proposes using the five rights of nursing delegation framework by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing to teach nursing students about the appropriate use of LLMs in health care and nursing education. Nursing faculty can teach students how to assess the validity and reliability of the information provided by LLMs, document its use, and reference and cite information appropriately.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Nearly 20% of children in the United States experience one or more chronic health conditions. Parents of a child with a special healthcare need (CSHCN) experience increased stress caring for a child with chronic illness. PURPOSE: The purpose of this descriptive study is to describe stress in parents of a child with chronic illness during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Parents of CSHCN (n = 34) were asked to fill out the Pediatric Inventory for Parents (PIP) and answer two questions related to caring for their child during the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: The means of the PIP-F (M = 146.6, SD = 20.5) and PIP-D (M = 141.9, SD = 23.9) were significantly higher than in previous studies. There is statistically significant positive correlation between parent stress and variables of age of the child and the length of time since diagnosis. In response to the questions about the impact of COVID, nearly all parents reported COVID increased their stress and reported their stress was related to isolation, lack of resources, and concern for the mental health of other children in the household. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: COVID-19 likely exacerbated feelings of stress for parents of children with chronic health conditions. Although unprecedented, COVID-19 shed light on the existing fragility and high stress of parents of CSHCN. Pediatric nurses not only care for children, but must be advocates for the mental health of their patient's parents.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Internet gaming disorder (IGD) has been recognized as a potential behavioral addiction that warrants further research. This article discusses the signs, symptoms, and risk factors of this behavioral addiction as well as nursing interventions to support children and adolescents with IGD and their families.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the extent to which perinatal mobile health applications (mHealth apps) are usable and desirable for women who seek information about childbearing. DESIGN: A descriptive, qualitative research design. SETTING: Through snowball sampling, participants were recruited from the social media sites Craigslist, Nextdoor, and Facebook and were asked to provide friends with a study invitation letter. PARTICIPANTS: Sixteen women who were pregnant or in the postpartum period and had used mHealth apps participated in the study. METHODS: Semistructured interviews were conducted to determine how participants perceived and used mobile applications for information about pregnancy. Participants were then given a perinatal app and asked to find specific information with the use of a think-aloud process. Data were organized, coded, and then grouped into concept maps in an iterative process until themes emerged. RESULTS: The themes that emerged were as follows: mHealth Apps Are a Source of Support During Childbearing, mHealth Apps Are Functional Tools, and There Are Limitations of mHealth Apps. Participants felt supported when they used mHealth apps because the information was personalized and they could use the apps to connect with family and the online community. mHealth apps have perceived limitations because women sometimes feel disconnected from the information they receive, some providers and families do not support their use, and security issues may be a concern. CONCLUSION: mHealth apps can be useful educational tools. Providers can support women by recommending select apps for use. Because of minimal oversight from app distribution platforms or health care organizations in the development and use of educational mHealth apps, a system to certify or verify mHealth apps should be developed.

RESUMO

Baccalaureate nursing programs require students to complete a research course, and faculty find it challenging to engage students. Educational gaming has recently gained attention as a technique to motivate students and enhance learning. The purpose of this pilot study was to describe undergraduate nursing students' reflections of their experiences with 3D Gamelab©, a game-based learning platform. A descriptive qualitative research design was used to elicit students' reflections of their experiences. Educational content such as handouts, videos, activities, and recommended resources for a required junior level nursing research course was organized into quests for use in 3D GameLab©. At the end of the semester, students were invited to give their feedback through a survey with open-ended questions. Thematic analysis resulted in the following components of the game-based learning experience: navigation, motivation, gaming concept, knowledge, technology, and target population. Although the overall response to 3D GameLab© in this course was negative, game-based learning does have the potential to engage students and enhance learning. To better understand how educational gaming could be used in nursing, further research should be conducted to determine the most motivating elements and the types of course content best delivered in this manner.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the Healthy Moms intervention on antenatal breastfeeding self-efficacy and intention and to determine the feasibility of using an online game-based learning platform to deliver antenatal breastfeeding education. BACKGROUND: The Internet has potential for improving breastfeeding rates through improving women's access to antenatal breastfeeding education. METHODS: Twelve computer-based breastfeeding education modules were developed using an online learning platform. Changes in participants' breastfeeding self-efficacy and intention pre- and post-intervention were measured using descriptive statistics and a one-way ANOVA. RESULTS: Of the 25 women submitting the pretest, four completed zero quests; seven, orientation only; eight, one to six breastfeeding quests; and six, 10 to 12 breastfeeding quests. No significant differences in breastfeeding self-efficacy and intention were found among the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Online antenatal breastfeeding education is feasible; however, further research is warranted to determine if it can affect breastfeeding outcomes.
