Knowledge on population dynamics of ecosystem's key-species is invaluable to understand how populations will respond to natural and human-induced perturbations. The amphipod Echinogammarus marinus is a key-species from European estuarine habitats with a distribution ranging from Norway to Portugal [1]. The present article contains supportive data related to a research article entitled 'Comparing production and life-history traits of a key amphipod species within and between estuaries under different levels of anthropogenic pressure' [2]. The present dataset presents the density, biomass, fecundity, and production of E. marinus in three estuaries under different anthropogenic pressure and, within each estuary, at three sampling sites, which differed in terms of the distance to the estuary mouth, vegetation cover, and organic matter content. Monthly environmental abiotic data and seasonal concentration of PAH and other contaminants are also provided. Sampling took place monthly for 13 months at low tide on intertidal mudflats. At each site, Fucus fronds containing E. marinus individuals were randomly collected. All E. marinus individuals were counted, sexed, and measured under a binocular stereo microscope to estimate the density and the biomass of E. marinus in Fucus fronds. Finally, the annual production of E. marinus at each sampling site was estimated through the size-frequency method. This dataset may be used to compare population traits of E. marinus populations across different estuaries and it may overall assist designing studies regarding population dynamics and designing management strategies in coastal systems, namely targeting at habitat conservation and restoration.

Inter-population variability may arise as a response to adverse natural and anthropogenic stressors. The dynamics of a key amphipod species (Echinogammarus marinus) was followed during ≈ 1-year at its southerly range (NW Portugal), in three estuaries with different levels of anthropogenic pressure (High - Ave estuary; Moderate - Mondego estuary; Low - Minho estuary). We hypothesised that E. marinus populations would present lower production and fitness, and higher intersexuality incidence with increasing anthropogenic pressure. According to a GAM model explaining ≈70% of the observed variability, E. marinus biomass depends on temperature, organic matter, Fucus area and time of the year. Significant differences were found between the gammarid biomass in Minho and Mondego estuaries and within sites from the same estuary. As expected, Ave estuary exhibited the lowest average annual production, abundance and fecundity rates. However, the highest average production was found in Mondego and not in Minho estuary, although the turnover ratio (P/B) of both estuaries was very similar. Besides the system's global ecological status, E. marinus also seems to respond to microhabitat conditions, which may explain the spatial heterogeneity observed in the amphipod production within the same estuary. Intersexuality prevalence was negligible in the three populations, which does not support the idea of a link between anthropogenic pressure and intersexuality in E. marinus. We argue that the dependence of E. marinus on Fucus sp. should be further investigated to fully understand the role of both fucoids and the gammarid in coastal foodwebs.

The freshwater-saltwater-transition-zone was analysed using two different sampling protocols and assessment methodologies, developed for freshwater and estuaries, to compare their agreement level in terms of community composition and quality assessments. The use of different protocols resulted in significant differences in macroinvertebrate communities, in index scores and initially in quality classes. After modifications in the sensitivity scores of the IBMWP and AMBI indices (average scores or the use of a score of the other index when both were present), the differences were largely reduced and quality classes became coincident for the assessments provided by IPtIs and BAT tools. Such harmonisation of quality assessments for adjacent water categories (e.g., large rivers vs. transitional waters), exemplified here as an harmonisation in one of the metrics comprised in the assessment tools, is essential as it has direct implications on the expansion and accomplishment of River Basin Management Plans committed by the Water Framework Directive.

PURPOSE: to translate into Portuguese, culturally adapt and validate the Incontinence Severity Index (ISI) questionnaire. METHODS: two Brazilian translators carried out the translation of the ISI into Portuguese and a version was generated by consensus. This version was back-translated by two other native English speaking translators. The differences between versions were resolved and the version was pre-tested in a pilot study. One week later, the ISI was reapplied to complete the retest. The final version of the ISI was applied together with the one-hour pad test to women with stress urinary incontinence. For the validation of the ISI, the reliability (internal consistency and test-retest) and the construct were evaluated. RESULTS: the reliability of the instrument was tested using the Cronbach α coefficient, with a general result of 0.93, demonstrating excellent reliability and consistency of the instrument. The intraclass correlation coefficient and the standard errors of measurement were 0.96 and 0.43, respectively. The Pearson correlation revealed a strong positive correlation (r=0.72, p<0.0001) between the results of the ISI questionnaire and the one-hour pad test. CONCLUSION: the culturally adapted version of the ISI translated into Brazilian Portuguese presented satisfactory reliability and survey validity and was considered to be valid for the evaluation of the severity of urinary incontinence.

OBJETIVO: traduzir para a língua portuguesa, adaptar culturalmente e validar o questionário Incontinence Severity Index (ISI). MÉTODOS: dois tradutores brasileiros realizaram a tradução do ISI para a língua portuguesa e uma versão foi gerada por consenso entre eles. Esta versão foi retraduzida para o inglês por outros dois tradutores que tinham esta língua como língua-mãe. As diferenças entre as versões foram harmonizadas e pré-testadas em um estudo piloto. Após uma semana da realização do questionário ISI, este foi reaplicado para a realização do reteste. A versão final do ISI foi aplicada juntamente com o pad test de uma hora em mulheres com incontinência urinária de esforço (IUE). Para validação do ISI, foram testadas a confiabilidade (consistência interna e teste-reteste) e a validade de constructo. RESULTADOS: a confiabilidade do instrumento foi avaliada por meio do coeficiente α de Cronbach, tendo como resultado geral 0,93, demonstrando excelente confiabilidade e consistência do instrumento. O coeficiente de correlação intraclasse e o erro padrão da medida foram de 0,96 e 0,43, respectivamente. Por meio da correlação de Pearson foi verificada uma correlação forte e positiva (r=0,72, p<0,0001) entre os resultados do questionário ISI e o pad test de uma hora. CONCLUSÃO: a versão em português do ISI, traduzida e adaptada culturalmente para o português do Brasil, apresentou confiabilidade e validade de constructo satisfatórias e foi considerada válida para avaliação da gravidade da IUE.

This article analyzes the interaction between cobalt cations and lysine both theoretically and experimentally. The influence of d orbital occupation in Co(+/2+) cations and the side chain of lysine on the relative stability of the different coordination modes was studied by means of theoretical methods. The structure and vibrational frequencies were determined using the B3LYP and BHLYP methods. Single-point calculations were also carried out at the CCSD(T) level. For both systems, Co+-lysine and Co2+-lysine, the most stable structure results from the interaction of neutral lysine to the metal cation through the two amino groups and the carbonyl oxygen, the ground electronic state being a 3A in the case of Co+ and 4A for the Co2+ system. This is in contrast to that found for Co2+ interacting with glycine in which the most stable structure has the amino acid in its zwitterionic form, which points out the importance of the side chain.

The binding of first-row transition metal monocations (Sc+-Cu+) to N7 of guanine and N7 or N3 of adenine nucleobases has been analyzed using the hybrid B3LYP density functional theory (DFT) method. The nature of the bonding is mainly electrostatic, the electronic ground state being mainly determined by metal-ligand repulsion. M+-guanine binding energies are 18-27 kcal/mol larger than those of M+-adenine, the difference decreasing along the row. Decomposition analysis shows that differences between guanine and adenine mainly arise from Pauli repulsion and the deformation terms, which are larger for adenine. Metal cation affinity values at this level of calculation are in very good agreement with experimental data obtained by Rodgers et al. (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2002, 124, 2678) for adenine nucleobases.

Cobalt cations are open shell systems with several possible electronic states arising from the different occupations of the 3d and 4s orbitals. The influence of these occupations on the relative stability of the coordination modes of the metal cation to glycine has been studied by means of theoretical methods. The structure and vibrational frequencies have been determined using the B3LYP method. Single-point calculations have also been carried out at the CCSD(T) level. The most stable structure of Co(+)-glycine is bidentate, with the Co(+) cation interacting with the amino group and the carbonyl oxygen of neutral glycine, and the ground electronic state being (3)A. For Co(2+)-glycine, the lowest energy structure corresponds to the interaction of the metal cation with the carboxylate group of the zwitterionic glycine, the ground electronic state being (4)A''.
