RESUMO

The estuaries of Tampa Bay, Sarasota Bay, Lemon Bay, and Upper Charlotte Harbor are contiguous waterbodies located within the subtropical environment of Southwest Florida. Based on an examination of rainfall data over the period of record (1916-2001) within the watersheds of these estuaries, there is no evidence for spatial differences (at the watershed level) or monotonic trends in annual rainfall. During the 1980s, nitrogen loads into Tampa Bay and Sarasota Bay (generated primarily by domestic wastewater treatment facilities) were reduced by 57% and 46%, respectively. In response, both Tampa Bay and Sarasota Bay have lower phytoplankton concentrations, greater water clarity and more extensive seagrass coverage in 2002 than in the early 1980s. As there is no evidence of a concurrent trend in rainfall during the period of 1982-2001, it is unlikely that variation in rainfall can account for the observed increase in seagrass coverage in these two bays. In contrast, seagrass coverage has remained relatively constant since the mid 1980s in Lemon Bay and Charlotte Harbor. Domestic wastewater treatment facilities are minor sources of nitrogen to Lemon Bay, and water clarity in Charlotte Harbor varies mostly as a function of dissolved organic matter and non-chlorophyll associated turbidity, not phytoplankton levels. Even in estuaries that share boundaries and are within 100 km of each other, varied responses to anthropogenic changes and natural phenomena were observed in water quality and associated seagrass extent. Resource management strategies must take into account system-specific factors-not all strategies will result in similar results in different systems.

RESUMO

This descriptive study replicates and extends the previous work on nursing support during labor. Within 72 hours of giving birth, 88 participants rated 25 selected nursing behaviors on a Likert scale as to their perceived helpfulness, with two open-ended questions for additional comments on helpful nursing behaviors. Nursing behaviors were categorized as emotional, informational, or tangible support. The majority of behaviors considered most helpful were in the emotional support category. Sixteen of the 25 behaviors were considered helpful, with the most helpful behaviors being making the woman feel cared about as an individual, appearing calm and confident, and treating the woman with respect. Findings were consistent with those of a previous study and suggest that, regardless of the pain management used, nurses supporting childbearing women must not only be competent but also use a high degree of interpersonal skills in providing nursing care.

RESUMO

Researchers have noted the apparently contradictory phenomenon of parents highly supportive of their deaf or hard of hearing child but apparently uninvolved with their child s school program (e.g., Bennet, 1988; Boone, 1992; Harry, 1993). This study explored this phenomenon by asking: What are the characteristics of these children s care providers? What is the nature of involvement? Is there a relationship between involvement or noninvolvement and parents characteristics? One hundred and five parents of deaf children ages 2 to 8 years in five U.S. cities were interviewed to ascertain the characteristics of those providing care for these children and their ability to respond to educational program initiatives requiring a specific set of values as well as certain personal resources. The authors found that (1) there are distinct subgroups of parents with distinct capabilities for responding to their children s educational needs; (2) there are different forms of response to a child s educational needs; (3) there is an interaction between parent type and nature of the response.

RESUMO

Mammalian glycogen synthase, with its complex multisite phosphorylation mechanisms, continues to provide interesting and novel examples of the regulation of protein function. The mammalian enzyme is phosphorylated in a hierarchal manner such that modification of certain sites requires the prior phosphorylation of other sites. Yeast contains two glycogen synthases that have extensive similarities to their mammalian counterpart but the greatest divergence in amino acid sequence is seen precisely in the regions likely to be involved in covalent control. We hope that examination of the control of the yeast glycogen synthase will be as informative as study of the mammalian enzymes, whether by revealing important parallels with the mammalian system or by uncovering major differences in mechanism.
