RESUMO

Vaccination against COVID-19 can prevent severe illness and reduce hospitalizations and deaths. Understanding and addressing determinants contributing to vaccine uptake among high-risk groups, such as Latinos, are pivotal in ensuring equitable vaccine distribution, promoting health equity, and fostering community engagement to bridge the gap in vaccine acceptance and ultimately enhance public health. This study aimed to examine factors influencing vaccine uptake among Latinos. We conducted a cross-sectional study using an online platform (n = 242). The survey was administered using a multimodal approach. Strategies for recruitment included community outreach, social media, and targeting community networks serving Latinos. Descriptive statistics, chi-square, and multivariable analysis were performed. Overall, 81.4% of respondents had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, with 77.0% recommending it and 70.6% believing it to be safe, 66.7% believing in its efficacy, 62.3% able to find trustful information in Spanish or Portuguese, and almost 40% who relied on health organizations as their primary resource for COVID-19 vaccine information. Factors significantly associated with vaccine uptake included higher education level (p<0.001), English level (p = 0.023), living in an urban area (p = 0.048), having insurance (p<0.001), and having a healthcare provider (p = 0.007). Furthermore, belief in vaccine safety and efficacy, trust in public health authorities, concerns about COVID-19, the ability to determine true/false vaccine information during the pandemic, and the availability of trustworthy information in Spanish/Portuguese had statistically significant associations (p<0.05) with COVID-19 vaccine uptake. COVID-19 vaccine uptake differed based on sociodemographic and other modifiable factors. Our findings emphasize the importance of implementing targeted interventions and culturally sensitive communication strategies to improve vaccination uptake among the Latino community in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Benign bone and soft tissue tumours encompass a broad, heterogenous range of tumours with varying clinical characteristics. These are often managed surgically with either curettage or marginal excision, but unfortunately have high rates of local recurrence. Indocyanine green (ICG) is a fluorescent dye which can be used to identify solid malignancies intraoperatively but its use is not yet established in benign bone and soft tissue tumours. This study aims to assess whether these tumours fluoresce when administered with ICG pre-operatively and whether this helps surgeons to identify tumour intra-operatively. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with locally aggressive benign bone and soft tissue tumours were administered with 25-75 mg of ICG preoperatively at the induction of anaesthesia. Fluorescence was imaged intraoperatively using the Stryker SPY-PHI camera. RESULTS: Of the 12 patients included, 11 tumours fluoresced. The surgeons felt the fluorescence guided the procedure in 7 out of the 11 cases which fluoresced. It was felt to be particularly useful in the curettage of bone tumours, in which curettage could be repeated until the absence of fluorescence on imaging. After 12 months, no patients had local recurrence of the tumour. There were no adverse events recorded in this study and surgeons found the technology acceptable. CONCLUSIONS: The use of ICG for fluorescence guided surgery is a promising technology to improve outcomes of surgery for benign bone and soft tissue tumours. Further, longer term, study with a control arm is needed to identify whether it results in a reduction in the local recurrence rate.

The energy-burning capability of beige adipose tissue is a potential therapeutic tool for reducing obesity and metabolic disease, but this capacity is decreased by aging. Here, we evaluate the impact of aging on the profile and activity of adipocyte stem and progenitor cells (ASPCs) and adipocytes during the beiging process in mice. We found that aging increases the expression of Cd9 and other fibro-inflammatory genes in fibroblastic ASPCs and blocks their differentiation into beige adipocytes. Fibroblastic ASPC populations from young and aged mice were equally competent for beige differentiation in vitro, suggesting that environmental factors suppress adipogenesis in vivo. Examination of adipocytes by single nucleus RNA-sequencing identified compositional and transcriptional differences in adipocyte populations with aging and cold exposure. Notably, cold exposure induced an adipocyte population expressing high levels of de novo lipogenesis (DNL) genes, and this response was severely blunted in aged animals. We further identified Npr3, which encodes the natriuretic peptide clearance receptor, as a marker gene for a subset of white adipocytes and an aging-upregulated gene in adipocytes. In summary, this study indicates that aging blocks beige adipogenesis and dysregulates adipocyte responses to cold exposure and provides a resource for identifying cold and aging-regulated pathways in adipose tissue.

Objective: Chronic inflammation and altered walking biomechanics are common after ACL reconstruction (ACLR) and contribute to the development of osteoarthritis. Clinically accessible techniques are needed to monitor inflammation (ultrasound-assessed effusion-synovitis) and walking biomechanics (force-measuring insoles), and they must improve the translation of these assessments and determine whether inflammation and walking biomechanics are related in patients after ACLR. This study aimed to determine the association between ultrasound-detected knee effusion-synovitis and limb loading asymmetries during walking in patients 1-5 years post-ACLR. Design: 15 participants (9 women; age: 26 ± 6yrs; mass: 71 ± 15 kg; height: 173 ± 9 cm; months post-ACLR: 29 ± 13) were included in this cross-sectional study. Knee effusion-synovitis was assessed using a standardized protocol and graded using a validated scoring atlas (0 = absent, 1 = mild, 2 = moderate, 3 = severe) in the ACLR limb. Force-measuring insoles were used to capture the vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) during a one-minute treadmill walking trial. Limb symmetry indices (LSIs) were used to quantify limb loading asymmetry for the peak vGRF and the instantaneous loading rate (vGRF-LR). Spearman correlations determined whether effusion-synovitis grade was associated with peak vGRF and vGRF-LR LSI. Results: Effusion-synovitis was present in the ACLR limb of 13/15 (87 %) participants (Grade 0: n = 2; Grade 1: n = 8; Grade 2: n = 4, Grade 3: n = 1). Effusion-synovitis grade was not significantly associated with peak vGRF LSI (mean±sd: 98.0 ± 5.6; ρ = 0.38, p = 0.162), but was significantly associated with vGRF-LR LSI (98.2 ± 11.4; ρ = 0.55, p = 0.035). Conclusion: Most participants 1-5 years post-ACLR have ultrasound-detected effusion-synovitis. Participants with more severe effusion-synovitis load their ACLR limb more rapidly. This study highlights the utility of clinically accessible techniques in assessing inflammation and walking biomechanics in ACLR patients.

Obesity is a growing concern in human and equine populations, predisposing to metabolic pathologies and reproductive disturbances. Cellular lipid accumulation and mitochondrial dysfunction play an important role in the pathologic consequences of obesity, which may be mitigated by dietary interventions targeting these processes. We hypothesized that obesity in the mare promotes follicular lipid accumulation and altered mitochondrial function of oocytes and granulosa cells, potentially contributing to impaired fertility in this population. We also predicted that these effects could be mitigated by dietary supplementation with a combination of targeted nutrients to improve follicular cell metabolism. Twenty mares were grouped as: Normal Weight [NW, n = 6, body condition score (BCS) 5.7 ± 0.3], Obese (OB, n = 7, BCS 7.7 ± 0.2), and Obese Diet Supplemented (OBD, n = 7, BCS 7.7 ± 0.2), and fed specific feed regimens for ≥ 6 weeks before sampling. Granulosa cells, follicular fluid, and cumulus-oocyte complexes were collected from follicles ≥ 35 mm during estrus and after induction of maturation. Obesity promoted several mitochondrial metabolic disturbances in granulosa cells, reduced L-carnitine availability in the follicle, promoted lipid accumulation in cumulus cells and oocytes, and increased basal oocyte metabolism. Diet supplementation of a complex nutrient mixture mitigated most of the metabolic changes in the follicles of obese mares, resulting in parameters similar to NW mares. In conclusion, obesity disturbs the equine ovarian follicle by promoting lipid accumulation and altering mitochondrial function. These effects may be partially mitigated with targeted nutritional intervention, thereby potentially improving fertility outcomes in the obese female.

PURPOSE: This study examines the independent and interactive effects of age and multiple sclerosis (MS) on health-related quality of life (HRQOL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample included persons with MS (n = 207) and healthy controls (HCs; n = 99) divided into three age groups (young, middle-aged, and older adults) who completed a battery of questionnaires, including the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) as a measure of HRQOL. The SF-36 yielded scores for the Physical Component Summary (PCS) (i.e. physical HRQOL) and Mental Component Summary (MCS) (i.e. mental HRQOL). The data were analyzed using two-way MANOVA. RESULTS: There was no interaction between age and disease status on HRQOL, but there were significant main effects of age and disease status on HRQOL. HRQOL was significantly lower in participants with MS than HCs, regardless of age. Physical HRQOL was lower, whereas mental HRQOL was higher across age groups. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that future research should develop behavioral and rehabilitation approaches that are applicable for improving HRQOL across the lifespan in persons with MS, particularly for physical HRQOL in older adults with MS.

Global wildfire activity has increased since the 1970s and is projected to intensify throughout the 21st century. Wildfires change the composition and biodegradability of soil organic matter (SOM) which contains nutrients that fuel microbial metabolism. Though persistent forms of SOM often increase postfire, the response of more biodegradable SOM remains unclear. Here we simulated severe wildfires through a controlled "pyrocosm" approach to identify biodegradable sources of SOM and characterize the soil metabolome immediately postfire. Using microbial amplicon (16S/ITS) sequencing and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, heterotrophic microbes (Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, and Protobacteria) and specific metabolites (glycine, protocatechuate, citric cycle intermediates) were enriched in burned soils, indicating that burned soils contain a variety of substrates that support microbial metabolism. Molecular formulas assigned by 21 T Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry showed that SOM in burned soil was lower in molecular weight and featured 20 to 43% more nitrogen-containing molecular formulas than unburned soil. We also measured higher water extractable organic carbon concentrations and higher CO2 efflux in burned soils. The observed enrichment of biodegradable SOM and microbial heterotrophs demonstrates the resilience of these soils to severe burning, providing important implications for postfire soil microbial and plant recolonization and ecosystem recovery.

SCOPE: Legumes consumption has been proven to promote health across the lifespan; cowpeas have demonstrated efficacy in combating childhood malnutrition and growth faltering, with an estimated malnutrition prevalence of 35.6% of children in Ghana. This cowpea feeding study aimed to identify a suite of metabolic consumption biomarkers in children and adults. METHODS AND RESULTS: Urine and dried blood spots (DBS) from 24 children (9-21 months) and 21 pregnant women (>18 years) in Northern Ghana are collected before and after dose-escalated consumption of four cowpea varieties for 15 days. Untargeted metabolomics identified significant increases in amino acids, phytochemicals, and lipids. The carnitine metabolism pathway is represented by 137 urine and 43 DBS metabolites, with significant changes to tiglylcarnitine and acetylcarnitine. Additional noteworthy candidate biomarkers are mansouramycin C, N-acetylalliin, proline betaine, N2, N5-diacetylornithine, S-methylcysteine, S-methylcysteine sulfoxide, and cis-urocanate. S-methylcysteine and S-methylcysteine sulfoxide are targeted and quantified in urine. CONCLUSION: This feeding study for cowpea biomarkers supports the utility of a suite of key metabolites classified as amino acids, lipids, and phytochemicals for dietary legume and cowpea-specific food exposures of global health importance.

OBJECTIVE: Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists reduce food intake, producing remarkable weight loss in overweight and obese individuals. While much of this weight loss is fat mass, there is also a loss of lean mass, similar to other approaches that induce calorie deficit. Targeting signaling pathways that regulate skeletal muscle hypertrophy is a promising avenue to preserve lean mass and modulate body composition. Myostatin and Activin A are TGFß-like ligands that signal via the activin type II receptors (ActRII) to antagonize muscle growth. Pre-clinical and clinical studies demonstrate that ActRII blockade induces skeletal muscle hypertrophy and reduces fat mass. In this manuscript, we test the hypothesis that combined ActRII blockade and GLP-1 receptor agonism will preserve muscle mass, leading to improvements in skeletomuscular and metabolic function and enhanced fat loss. METHODS: In this study, we explore the therapeutic potential of bimagrumab, a monoclonal antibody against ActRII, to modify body composition alone and during weight loss induced by GLP-1 receptor agonist semaglutide in diet-induced obese mice. Mechanistically, we define the specific role of the anabolic kinase Akt in mediating the hypertrophic muscle effects of ActRII inhibition in vivo. RESULTS: Treatment of obese mice with bimagrumab induced a ∼10 % increase in lean mass while simultaneously decreasing fat mass. Daily treatment of obese mice with semaglutide potently decreased body weight; this included a significant decrease in both muscle and fat mass. Combination treatment with bimagrumab and semaglutide led to superior fat mass loss while simultaneously preserving lean mass despite reduced food intake. Treatment with both drugs was associated with improved metabolic outcomes, and increased lean mass was associated with improved exercise performance. Deletion of both Akt isoforms in skeletal muscle modestly reduced, but did not prevent, muscle hypertrophy driven by ActRII inhibition. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, these data demonstrate that blockade of ActRII signaling improves body composition and metabolic parameters during calorie deficit driven by GLP-1 receptor agonism and demonstrate the existence of Akt-independent pathways supporting muscle hypertrophy in the absence of ActRII signaling.

Technetium is a problematic radioisotope for used nuclear fuel (UNF) and subsequent waste management owing to its high environmental mobility and coextraction in reprocessing technologies as the pertechnetate anion (TcO4-). Consequently, several strategies are under development to control the transport of this radioisotope. A proposed approach is to use diaminoguanidine (DAG) for TcO4- and transuranic ion redox control. Although the initial DAG molecule is ultimately consumed in the redox process, its susceptibility to radiolysis is currently unknown under envisioned UNF reprocessing conditions, which is a critical knowledge gap for evaluating its overall suitability for this role. To this end, we report the impacts of steady-state gamma irradiation on the rate of DAG radiolysis in water, aqueous 2.0 M nitric acid (HNO3), and in a biphasic solvent system composed of aqueous 2.0 M HNO3 in contact with 1.5 M N,N-di-(2-ethylhexyl)isobutyramide (DEHiBA) dissolved in n-dodecane. Additionally, we report chemical kinetics for the reaction of DAG with key transients arising from electron pulse radiolysis, specifically the hydrated electron (eaq-), hydrogen atom (H˙), and hydroxyl (˙OH) and nitrate (NO3˙) radicals. The DAG molecule exhibited significant reactivity with the ˙OH and NO3˙ radicals, indicating that oxidation would be the predominant degradation pathway in radiation environments. This is consistent with its role as a reducing agent. Steady-state gamma irradiations demonstrated that DAG is readily degraded within a few hundred kilogray, the rate of which was found to increase upon going from water to HNO3 containing solutions and solvents systems. This was attributed to a thermal reaction between DAG and the predominant HNO3 radiolysis product, nitrous acid (HNO2), k(DAG + HNO2) = 5480 ± 85 M-1 s-1. Although no evidence was found for the radiolysis of DAG altering the radiation chemistry of the contacted DEHiBA/n-dodecane phase in the investigated biphasic system, the utility of DAG as a redox control reagent will likely be limited by significant competition with its degradation by HNO2.

BACKGROUND: This report quantifies counteracting effects of quit-years and concomitant aging on lung cancer risk, especially on exceeding 15 quit-years, when the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends curtailing lung-cancer screening. METHODS: Cox models were fitted to estimate absolute lung cancer risk among Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial (PLCO) and National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) participants who ever smoked. Absolute lung cancer risk and gainable years of life from screening for individuals aged 50 to 80 in the US-representative National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) 2015-2018 who ever smoked were projected. Relaxing USPSTF recommendations to 20/25/30 quit-years versus augmenting USPSTF criteria with individuals whose estimated gain in life expectancy from screening exceeded 16.2 days according to the Life Years From Screening-CT (LYFS-CT) prediction model was compared. RESULTS: Absolute lung cancer risk increased by 8.7%/year (95% CI, 7.7%-9.7%; p < .001) as individuals aged beyond 15 quit-years in the PLCO, with similar results in NHIS and NLST. For example, mean 5-year lung cancer risk for those aged 65 years with 15 quit-years = 1.47% (95% CI, 1.35%-1.59%) versus 1.76% (95% CI, 1.62%-1.90%) for those aged 70 years with 20 quit-years in the PLCO. Removing the quit-year criterion would make 4.9 million more people eligible and increase the proportion of preventable lung cancer deaths prevented (sensitivity) from 63.7% to 74.2%. Alternatively, augmentation using LYFS-CT would make 1.7 million more people eligible while increasing the lung cancer death sensitivity to 74.0%. CONCLUSIONS: Because of aging, absolute lung cancer risk increases beyond 15 quit-years, which does not support exemption from screening or curtailing screening once it has been initiated. Compared with relaxing the USPSTF quit-year criterion, augmentation using LYFS-CT could prevent most of the deaths at substantially superior efficiency, while also preventing deaths among individuals who currently smoke with low intensity or long duration.

Untargeted metabolomics is an analytical approach with numerous applications serving as an effective metabolic phenotyping platform to characterize small molecules within a biological system. Data quality can be challenging to evaluate and demonstrate in metabolomics experiments. This has driven the use of pooled quality control (QC) samples for monitoring and, if necessary, correcting for analytical variance introduced during sample preparation and data acquisition stages. Described herein is a scoping literature review detailing the use of pooled QC samples in published untargeted liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) based metabolomics studies. A literature query was performed, the list of papers was filtered, and suitable articles were randomly sampled. In total, 109 papers were each reviewed by at least five reviewers, answering predefined questions surrounding the use of pooled quality control samples. The results of the review indicate that use of pooled QC samples has been relatively widely adopted by the metabolomics community and that it is used at a similar frequency across biological taxa and sample types in both small- and large-scale studies. However, while many studies generated and analyzed pooled QC samples, relatively few reported the use of pooled QC samples to improve data quality. This demonstrates a clear opportunity for the field to more frequently utilize pooled QC samples for quality reporting, feature filtering, analytical drift correction, and metabolite annotation. Additionally, our survey approach enabled us to assess the ambiguity in the reporting of the methods used to describe the generation and use of pooled QC samples. This analysis indicates that many details of the QC framework are missing or unclear, limiting the reader's ability to determine which QC steps have been taken. Collectively, these results capture the current state of pooled QC sample usage and highlight existing strengths and deficiencies as they are applied in untargeted LC-MS metabolomics.

Cardiac optical mapping has traditionally been performed in ex-vivo, motion-arrested hearts. Recently, in-situ cardiac optical mapping has been made possible by both motion correction techniques and long-wavelength voltage sensitive dyes (VSDs). However, VSDs have been observed to wash out quickly from blood-perfused in-situ hearts. In this study, we evaluate the performance of a newly developed VSD, di-5-ANEQ(F)PTEA, relative to an earlier VSD, di-4-ANEQ(F)PTEA. We find that di-5-ANEQ(F)PTEA persists over 3 times longer, produces improved signal-to-noise ratio, and does not prolong loading unacceptably.Clinical Relevance-Optical mapping has provided many insights into cardiac arrhythmias, but has traditionally been limited to ex-vivo preparations. The present findings extend the utility of optical mapping in the more realistic in-vivo setting and may eventually enable its use in patients.

The complexation of trivalent lanthanides and minor actinides (Am3+, Cm3+, and Cf3+) by the acyclic aminopolycarboxylate chelators 6,6'-((ethane-1,2-diylbis-((carboxymethyl)azanediyl))bis-(methylene))dipicolinic acid (H4octapa) and 6,6'-((((4-(1-(2-(2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis-(methylene))bis-((carboxymethyl)azanediyl))bis-(methylene)) dipicolinic acid (H4pypa-peg) were studied using potentiometry, spectroscopy, competitive complexation liquid-liquid extraction, and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Two studied reagents are strong multidentate chelators, well-suited for applications seeking radiometal coordination for in-vivo delivery and f-element isolation. The previously reported H4octapa forms a compact coordination packet, while H4pypa-peg is less sterically constrained due to the presence of central pyridine ring. The solubility of H4octapa is limited in a non-complexing high ionic strength perchlorate media. However, the introduction of a polyethylene glycol group in H4pypa-peg increased the solubility without influencing its ability to complex the lanthanides and minor actinides in solution.

The surgical resection of solid tumours can be enhanced by fluorescence-guided imaging. However, variable tumour uptake and incomplete clearance of fluorescent dyes reduces the accuracy of distinguishing tumour from normal tissue via conventional fluorescence intensity-based imaging. Here we show that, after systemic injection of the near-infrared dye indocyanine green in patients with various types of solid tumour, the fluorescence lifetime (FLT) of tumour tissue is longer than the FLT of non-cancerous tissue. This tumour-specific shift in FLT can be used to distinguish tumours from normal tissue with an accuracy of over 97% across tumour types, and can be visualized at the cellular level using microscopy and in larger specimens through wide-field imaging. Unlike fluorescence intensity, which depends on imaging-system parameters, tissue depth and the amount of dye taken up by tumours, FLT is a photophysical property that is largely independent of these factors. FLT imaging with indocyanine green may improve the accuracy of cancer surgeries.

Human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC)-derived tissues can be used to model diseases in cell types that are challenging to harvest and study at-scale, such as neutrophils. Neutrophil dysregulation, specifically neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation, plays a critical role in the prognosis and progression of multiple diseases, including COVID-19. While hPSCs can generate limitless neutrophils (iNeutrophils) to study these processes, current differentiation protocols generate heterogeneous cultures of granulocytes and precursors. Here, we describe a method to improve iNeutrophil differentiations through the deletion of GATA1. GATA1 knockout (KO) iNeutrophils are nearly identical to primary neutrophils in form and function. Unlike wild-type iNeutrophils, GATA1 KO iNeutrophils generate NETs in response to the physiologic stimulant lipopolysaccharide, suggesting they are a more accurate model when performing NET inhibitor screens. Furthermore, through deletion of CYBB, we demonstrate that GATA1 KO iNeutrophils are a powerful tool in determining involvement of a given protein in NET formation.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas that also contributes to ozone depletion. Recent studies have identified river corridors as significant sources of N2O emissions. Surface water-groundwater (hyporheic) interactions along river corridors induce flow and reactive nitrogen transport through riparian sediments, thereby generating N2O. Despite the prevalence of these processes, the controlling influence of physical and geochemical parameters on N2O emissions from coupled aerobic and anaerobic reactive transport processes in heterogeneous riparian sediments is not yet fully understood. This study presents an integrated framework that combines a flow and multi-component reactive transport model (RTM) with an uncertainty quantification and sensitivity analysis tool to determine which physical and geochemical parameters have the greatest impact on N2O emissions from riparian sediments. The framework involves the development of thousands of RTMs, followed by global sensitivity and responsive surface analyses. Results indicate that characterizing the denitrification reaction rate constant and permeability of intermediate-permeability sediments (e.g., sandy gravel) are crucial in describing coupled nitrification-denitrification reactions and the magnitude of N2O emissions. This study provides valuable insights into the factors that influence N2O emissions from riparian sediments and can help in developing strategies to control N2O emissions from river corridors.

Optical mapping has been widely used in the study of cardiac electrophysiology in motion-arrested, ex vivo heart preparations. Recent developments in motion artifact mitigation techniques have made it possible to optically map beating ex vivo hearts, enabling the study of cardiac electromechanics using optical mapping. However, the ex vivo setting imposes limitations on optical mapping such as altered metabolic states, oversimplified mechanical loads, and the absence of neurohormonal regulation. In this study, we demonstrate optical electromechanical mapping in an in vivo heart preparation. Swine hearts were exposed via median sternotomy. Voltage-sensitive dye, either di-4-ANEQ(F)PTEA or di-5-ANEQ(F)PTEA, was injected into the left anterior descending artery. Fluorescence was excited by alternating green and amber light for excitation ratiometry. Cardiac motion during sinus and paced rhythm was tracked using a marker-based method. Motion tracking and excitation ratiometry successfully corrected most motion artifact in the membrane potential signal. Marker-based motion tracking also allowed simultaneous measurement of epicardial deformation. Reconstructed membrane potential and mechanical deformation measurements were validated using monophasic action potentials and sonomicrometry, respectively. Di-5-ANEQ(F)PTEA produced longer working time and higher signal/noise ratio than di-4-ANEQ(F)PTEA. In addition, we demonstrate potential applications of the new optical mapping system including electromechanical mapping during vagal nerve stimulation, fibrillation/defibrillation. and acute regional ischemia. In conclusion, although some technical limitations remain, optical mapping experiments that simultaneously image electrical and mechanical function can be conducted in beating, in vivo hearts.
