RESUMO

Parker Solar Probe observations show ubiquitous magnetic-field reversals closer to the Sun, often referred to as "switchbacks". The switchbacks have been observed before in the solar wind near 1 AU and beyond, but their occurrence was historically rare. PSP measurements below ∼ 0.2 AU show that switchbacks are, however, the most prominent structures in the "young" solar wind. In this work, we analyze remote-sensing observations of a small equatorial coronal hole to which PSP was connected during the perihelion of Encounter 1. We investigate whether some of the switchbacks captured during the encounter were of coronal origin by correlating common switchback in situ signatures with remote observations of their expected coronal footpoint. We find strong evidence that timescales present in the corona are relevant to the outflowing, switchback-filled solar wind, as illustrated by strong linear correlation. We also determine that spatial analysis of the observed region is optimal, as the implied average solar-wind speed more closely matches that observed by PSP at the time. We observe that hemispherical structures are strongly correlated with the radial proton velocity and the mass flux in the solar wind. The above findings suggest that a subpopulation of the switchbacks are seeded at the corona and travel into interplanetary space.

RESUMO

Effective tools for monitoring the status of ecological restoration projects are critical for the management of restoration programs. Such tools must integrate disparate data comprised of multiple variables that describe restoration status, including the condition of environmental stressors, landscape connectivity, ecosystem resilience, and ecological structure and function, while communicating these concepts effectively to a wide range of stakeholders. In this paper we describe the process of constructing multimetric indices (MMIs) for monitoring restoration status for restoration projects currently underway on the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia. During this process, an initial suite of measurements is filtered for response and sensitivity to ecosystem stressors, eliminating measurements that provide little information and reducing future monitoring efforts. The retained measurements are rescaled into comparable domain metrics and assembled into MMIs. The MMIs are presented in terms of established restoration theories, including restoration trajectory and restoration endpoint targets.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to measure the serum paracetamol concentrations achieved following a single rectal loading dose of 40 mg x kg(-1) in children with chronic liver disease. METHODS: We recruited 17 children (3-15 years, 10.6-75 kg) undergoing minor surgical procedures under general anesthesia. Paracetamol was administered at the end of surgery and blood samples were taken for analysis at 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 h postdose. RESULTS: The mean Cmax of 11.4 mg x l(-1) [coefficient of variation (CV) 66%] was achieved at a Tmax of 2.7 h (CV 42%). The relative bioavailability (F) of the suppository formulation was not estimated, but clearance (Cl/F) estimates 0.73 l x kg(-1) x h(-1) (CV 87%) and time-concentration profiles for these children were similar to the normal pediatric population. CONCLUSIONS: There are currently no biologic markers available for monitoring possible hepatotoxicity in this cohort of patients with liver disease, but our data suggest that a single-dose suppository is a satisfactory analgesic alternative.

RESUMO

In North American society driving is closely linked with independence. Unfortunately, the freedom to operate a motor vehicle may be lost when an individual develops a specific medical diagnosis. The complex issue of dementia and driving safety is frequently encountered by health care professionals. Physicians are required, by law, to report any medical diagnosis such as dementia, that may affect driving safety. Physicians often refer to occupational therapists to assist them in determining if an individual's impairment significantly impacts driving safety. Unfortunately many health care professionals are not using reliable, valid and sensitive tests to determine the point at which an individual with dementia will become an unsafe driver. Through a review of the literature, the authors explore the effects of normal aging and cognitive impairment on driving safety. Specific assessment tools used to assess driving ability are examined and the role of health professionals in driver assessment is discussed. Some suggestions to improve the overall approach to evaluating driving safety are offered in the conclusion.

RESUMO

This study was an investigation of children's understanding that others' judgments of the self can be based on the actions of another person with whom one is associated. Five-, 8-, and 11-year-old children in Scotland were presented with hypothetical scenarios that indicated that they were responsible for a toddler who breached normative expectations of behavior. The children were required to make a variety of judgments, most notably concerning their likely emotion and its causes, and what others would think of them. The majority recognized that others would make negative judgments of the self. However, emotional self-attributions indicated that only among the 11-year-olds was there a widespread tendency to be self-punitive-that is, to attribute reflexive emotions such as embarrassment. Particularly among the 5-year-olds, punitive responses (e.g., anger) were directed only at the norm-violating toddler, implying that, unlike the oldest children, they did not view the toddler as constituting part of their extended identity. Eight-year-olds appeared to represent an intermediate step between the younger and older groups. In the light of these findings it is suggested that a mature form of extended identity may be a relatively late development.

RESUMO

This paper focuses on the process of community-based drug prevention programming using an ongoing, multiple community project (Project STAR) as an illustration. Particular attention is paid to problems and strategies for balancing program and research integrity over the long-term. Specific strategies are discussed for obtaining and sustaining support for the program, quality control throughout program delivery, and accommodation of both research and program objectives.
