BACKGROUND: Studies in human medicine have concluded that acetazolamide reduces pain associated with carbon dioxide insufflation during laparoscopic surgery. However, there are no published reports regarding the use of acetazolamide for this purpose in companion animals, despite the increasing popularity of laparoscopic techniques in veterinary medicine due to their advantages over open surgeries. OBJECTIVES: Thirty mixed-breed female dogs were included in the study and randomly assigned to one of three groups: OVE (median celiotomy ovariectomy; n = 10), OVEL (laparoscopic ovariectomy, n = 10) and OVELA (laparoscopic ovariectomy with acetazolamide preoperative administration; n = 10). Experienced surgeons performed all procedures, and the anaesthetic and analgesic protocols were identical for all animals. Acetazolamide was administered orally (at a dose of 25 mg/kg) 2 h prior to induction in the OVELA group. Postoperative pain was evaluated using serum cortisol, salivary cortisol, and the University of Melbourne Pain Scale (UMPS) Score. RESULTS: Any statistical differences were observed in the UMPS scores when the OVELA group was compared to the OVEL group at 1 h after surgery (p = 0.515), 12 h (p = 0.375) and 24 h (p = 0.242). Animals undergoing open surgery (OVE group) had significantly higher pain scores at all times after surgery when compared with OVEL and OVELA groups. A high positive correlation (r = 0.792; p = 0.01) was found between serum and saliva cortisol concentrations. Mean saliva cortisol concentration was not significantly lower for the OVELA group compared to the other groups. CONCLUSIONS: This study found evidence that preoperative administration of acetazolamide may be beneficial in managing postoperative pain in dogs after laparoscopic surgeries. However, further research with a larger sample size is needed to confirm this and to determine if acetazolamide should be included in a multimodal postoperative analgesia protocol for laparoscopic ovariectomy in dogs.

In the last decades, several swarm-based optimization algorithms have emerged in the scientific literature, followed by a massive increase in terms of their fields of application. Most of the studies and comparisons are restricted to high-level languages (such as MATLAB®) and testing methods on classical benchmark mathematical functions. Specifically, the employment of swarm-based methods for solving energy-based acoustic localization problems is still in its inception and has not yet been extensively studied. As such, the present work marks the first comprehensive study of swarm-based optimization algorithms applied to the energy-based acoustic localization problem. To this end, a total of 10 different algorithms were subjected to an extensive set of simulations with the following aims: (1) to compare the algorithms' convergence performance and recognize novel, promising methods for solving the problem of interest; (2) to validate the importance (in convergence speed) of an intelligent swarm initialization for any swarm-based algorithm; (3) to analyze the methods' time efficiency when implemented in low-level languages and when executed on embedded processors. The obtained results disclose the high potential of some of the considered swarm-based optimization algorithms for the problem under study, showing that these methods can accurately locate acoustic sources with low latency and bandwidth requirements, making them highly attractive for edge computing paradigms.

Neonicotinoids pesticides were introduced to the market in the 1990s to control various pests. Its accumulation in the environment supposes a severe problem that can affect human health. This study investigates the electrochemical degradation of four common neonicotinoid pesticides; thiamethoxam (TMX), imidacloprid (ICP), acetamiprid (ACP) and thiacloprid (TCP), in different natural surface waters by a boron-doped diamond anode (BDD). The most influencing variable was the current density (j), and to a lesser extent, the supporting electrolyte concentration (Ce). In optimal conditions (j = 34.14 mA cm-2 and Ce = 10.00 mM, using Na2SO4 as electrolyte) pesticide removals for TMX, ICP, ACP and TCP were 97.2, 96.9, 87.8 and 98.2 %, respectively. The obtained results with different support electrolytes (Na2SO4, NaCl, NaNO3 and HK2PO4) suggest that sulphate electrolyte was the optimum for TMX, ICP and ACP. However, for TCP, a total removal was achieved in less than 10 min using NaCl. It was also verified that the initial pH of the solution did not significantly influence the process in the range 3-9. All these results were rationalized in this paper. Finally, to evaluate the matrix influence, some experiments were carried out in different natural surface water matrices (river, reservoir and two different WWTP effluents). The factors influencing the process were the conductivity of the solution and the organic matter content. It was noticeable that the specific energy consumption (SEC) reduced by approximately 15 % for river water and WWTP effluent. High mineralization rates were obtained for all water matrices, with TOC removals ranging between 60 and 80 %.

Neonicotinoids sonochemical oxidation at high-frequency ultrasound (MHz range) has been carried out in ultrapure and natural surface-water matrices (river, reservoir and wastewater treatment plant effluent). To evaluate the influence of the operating variables, that is initial pollutant concentration, ultrasound frequency, ultrasound power, and pulse-stop time a Box-Behnken experimental design was planned. Optimal results were obtained using a frequency of 578 kHz, a power of 40 W L-1, with a pollutant concentration of 1 µM (for each pesticide), and using a pulse-stop time of 100 ms. The experimental data adjustment using the Langmuir-Hinshelwood heterogeneous kinetic model showed that neonicotinoids oxidation was carried out in the bubble-liquid interface by the attack of hydroxyl radicals. Experiments performed in the presence of radical scavengers, that is, methanol, ethanol and tert-butyl alcohol corroborated this reaction mechanism. The influence of some environmental conditions such as pH, presence of soluble inorganic species (Cl-, SO42-, NO3-, HPO42-, HCO3-) and soluble organic species (humic acids content) were established. Finally, the aqueous matrix's influence was investigated for three natural surface water cases, and the results were rationalized according to the main water physicochemical characteristics.

The degradation of four representative neonicotinoids, namely Thiamethoxam, Imidacloprid, Acetamiprid and Thiacloprid, was carried out by the sequential association of different advanced oxidation processes, including Ozonation, Electro-chemical Oxidation, Ultrasound, Ultraviolet radiation, and their different possible associations. There are no published papers in the literature on the removal of this type of insecticides through these associated oxidation processes. Single oxidation processes did not achieve total pollutants removal in less than 3 h (only UV radiation treatment obtain a total removal of Thiamethoxan in 150 min, but with mineralization below 15% TOC). For double sequential processes, Electro-oxidation-Ozone treatment obtains a total removal of Imidacloprid in 120 min and an increase of mineralization to 50% TOC. Three or four sequential processes are recommended to improve degradation and mineralization rates in a significant way, Electro-oxidation-Ozone-UV treatment obtains a total removal of Thiamethoxan in 80 min with mineralization over 75% TOC. These results confirm important synergistic effects which were quantified. The global trend indicates that Thiamethoxam is the most oxidizable neonicotinoid, whereas Acetamiprid is the most recalcitrant compound. The degradation rate of each neonicotinoid followed pseudo-first-order kinetics and the different oxidation pathways were also quantified from a kinetic point of view.

This work addresses the energy-based source localization problem in wireless sensors networks. Instead of circumventing the maximum likelihood (ML) problem by applying convex relaxations and approximations, we approach it directly by the use of metaheuristics. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that metaheuristics are applied to this type of problem. More specifically, an elephant herding optimization (EHO) algorithm is applied. Through extensive simulations, the key parameters of the EHO algorithm are optimized such that they match the energy decay model between two sensor nodes. A detailed analysis of the computational complexity is presented, as well as a performance comparison between the proposed algorithm and existing non-metaheuristic ones. Simulation results show that the new approach significantly outperforms existing solutions in noisy environments, encouraging further improvement and testing of metaheuristic methods.

Fluctuations in the stress level of an organism are expressed in behavioural and molecular changes that can affect its ecology and survival. Our knowledge of thermal adaptations in deep-sea organisms is very limited, and this study investigates the critical thermal maximum (CTmax) and the heat-shock response (HSR) in the deep-sea crab Chaceon affinis commonly found in waters of the North East Atlantic. A mild but significant HSR in C. affinis was noted and one of the lowest CTmax known amongst Crustacea was revealed (27.5 °C at 0.1 MPa; 28.5 °C at 10 MPa). The thermal sensitivity of this species appears to be reduced at in situ pressure (10 MPa), given the slightly higher CTmax and the significant 3-fold induction of stress genes hsp70 form 1 and hsp70 form 2. Although C. affinis deep-sea habitat is characterized by overall low temperature this species appears to have retained its ability to induce a HSR. This capability may be linked with C. affinis' occasional exploitation of warmer and thermally instable hydrothermal vent fields, where it has been found foraging for food.

Western scrub-jays (Aphelocoma californica) did not show extinction when caching behavior was never rewarded and they had no choice of where to cache the food. However, when the jays had the choice of caching items in 2 different locations or during 2 successive episodes, and only 1 of each was always rewarded at recovery, they rapidly learned to cache in the rewarded location or episode. When the jays had learned during training trials that their caches were always moved to 1 of 2 locations they did not cache in, then on the test trial they cached in the location that had been previously rewarded. To test whether these jays avoided the location in which their caches had been pilfered or chose the rewarded location, the procedure was repeated to include a 3rd location that was never rewarded. The jays avoided the pilfered location but cached equally in the rewarded and nonrewarded locations.

Planning for the future has been considered to be a uniquely human trait [1-3]. However, recent studies challenge this hypothesis by showing that food-caching Western scrub-jays (Aphelocoma californica) can relate their previous experience as thieves to the possibility of future cache theft by another bird [4], are sensitive to the state of their caches at recovery ([5] and S. De Kort, S.P.C.C., D. Alexis, A.D., and N.S.C., unpublished data), and can plan for tomorrow's breakfast [6]. Although these results suggest that scrub-jays are capable of future planning, the degree to which these birds act independently of their current motivational state is a matter of contention. The Bischof-Köhler hypothesis [1] holds that nonhuman animals cannot anticipate and act toward the satisfaction of a future need not currently experienced or cued by their present motivational state. Using specific satiety to control for the jays' current and future motivational states, here we specifically test this hypothesis by dissociating current and future motivational states. We report that Western scrub-jays anticipate the recovery of their caches, as well as their own future needs, by acting independently of their current motivational state and immediate needs. The fact that the birds act in favor of a future need as opposed to the current one challenges the hypothesis that this ability is unique to humans.
