BACKGROUND: Uroflowmetry is a non-invasive examination considered as a first-line assessment for children with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Currently, the performance of two uroflowmetry tests is recommended by ICCS for all patients with LUTS. This study aims to evaluate the differences between two uroflowmetry tests in children with lower urinary tract symptoms and their impact on the patient's diagnostic workup and clinical outcome. METHODS: Forty patients with LUTS, aged 4-17 years, were evaluated prospectively with two consecutive uroflowmetry tests and ultrasonography. They were classified based on the ICCS criteria for curve pattern and divided into two groups based on the SPU classification of fractionated (staccato and intermittent) and smooth (bell, tower and plateau). They were also separated into three groups based on estimated bladder capacity (voided volume + post-void residual on ultrasound): high (>115%), low (<60%) or normal capacity. RESULTS: The mean age was 8 (IQR 6.0-10.0) years and 25 (62.5%) patients were female. There was an increase in nonbell-shaped curves from the first (32.5%) to the second test (52.5%). The curve shape between the uroflowmetries based on ICCS classification showed a Kappa value of 0.349 (fair). Classifying curves as fractionated or smooth yielded a Kappa value of 0.714 (substantial) (table). The Bland-Altman test showed disagreement in the parameter of time to Qmax. There was a significant difference in categorizing bladder capacity as high, low, or normal: it was concordant in 63.6% for high, 68.4% for normal and 50% for low capacity (p = 0.001). DISCUSSION: Despite the disagreement found classifying the curves based on the ICCS pattern, also demonstrated in other studies, there was a substantial agreement using the SPU criteria. It reinforces the greater reliability of the SPU system and it may be the key to reduce the subjectivity of uroflowmetry. Even though this classification being associated with a higher agreement in interpretation of the curves, repeating uroflowmetry does not present a clinically significant divergence that changes the patient's diagnostic workup. Our study is limited by the lack of EMG and larger sample. CONCLUSION: Considering the flow curve pattern, the agreement between two uroflowmetries was substantial according to the SPU and only reasonable by the ICCS classification. Regardless of some differences found between the flows, a second uroflowmetry test might not have clinical relevance that justifies its recommendation for all patients.

Pereskia aculeata has been widely investigated due to its anti-inflammatory potential. Among the metabolites found in this species are the phytosterols beta-sitosterol (ß-SIT) and stigmasterol (STIG). The objective of the study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and toxicity activities of the hexane partition of P. aculeata (PHEX), as well as ß-SIT and STIG. PHEX was prepared and the phytosterols were quantified. In terms of toxicity against L929 fibroblast cells, PHEX showed toxicity up to 200â µg/mL; STIG and ß-SIT showed toxicity up to 25â µg/mL. PHEX inhibited 66 % of nitric oxide radicals, while STIG and ß-SIT inhibited 33.73 % and 34.94 %, respectively. In an anti-inflammatory test against Zophobas morio larvae, all samples significantly reduced hemocyte levels. Additionally, the LD50 values were calculated: 229.6â mg/kg for PHEX, 101.5â mg/kg for STIG, and 103.8â mg/kg for ß-SIT. In conclusion, the study indicates that the phytosterols present in PHEX may contribute to its anti-inflammatory activity.

Carbohydrate counting is one of the dietary strategies used for the management of type 1 diabetes (T1DM), and counting proteins and fats allows individuals to achieve better glycemic and metabolic control, reducing glycemic variability and long-term complications. The aim of this paper is to analyze the factors associated with adherence to the protein- and fat-counting strategy in adults with T1DM. This cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2021 to June 2022 through an online questionnaire. We applied Pearson's Chi-square test with adjusted residual analysis and a binomial logistic regression test using SPSS software, version 24.0, considering p < 0.05 as indicative of statistical significance. There was an association between performing protein and lipid counting and having a higher education level, income exceeding three minimum wages, and having adequate glycated hemoglobin. Performing protein and lipid counting increased the chances of having adequate HbA1c by 4.3 times. Protein and lipid counting was a predictor of having adequate HbA1c. The results suggest that considering the practice of counting proteins and fats is important as a strategy to optimize glycemic control.

Environmental stressors in aquatic organisms can be assessed using a bioenergetic approach based on the evaluation of changes in their physiological parameters. We evaluated the chronic effects of cadmium (Cd2+) on the energy balance as well as the survival, growth, metabolism, nitrogen excretion, hepatosomatic index, oxidized energy substrate, and osmoregulation of the shrimp Penaeus vannamei with the hypothesis that the high energy demand related to the homeostatic regulation of Cd2+could disrupt the energy balance and as a consequence, their physiological functions. The shrimp exposed to Cd2+ had higher mortality (30%), directed more energy into growth (33% of energy intake), ingested 10% more energy, and defecated less than control animals. Cd2+ exposure caused a tendency to decrease metabolism and ammonia excretion but did not alter the hepatosomatic index, type of energy substrate oxidized, and the hyperosmorregulatory pattern of the species. The Cd+2 exposure may have induced a trade-off response because there was a growth rate increase accompanied by increased mortality.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to conduct a detailed geospatial analysis of mobile phone signal coverage in the northwest macro-region of Paraná State, Brazil, seeking to identify areas where limitations in coverage may be related to lengthy travel times of the helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) for the assistance of victims of road traffic injuries (RTIs). METHODS: An observational study was conducted to examine mobile phone signal coverage and HEMS travel times from 2017 to 2021. HEMS travel times were categorized into four groups: T1 (0-15 min), T2 (16-30 min), T3 (31-45 min), and T4 (over 45 min). Empirical Bayesian Kriging was used to map areas with low mobile signal coverage. The Kruskal-Wallis test and Dwass-Steel-Critchlow-Fligner comparative analyses were performed to explore how mobile signal coverage relates to HEMS travel times to RTI locations. RESULTS: There were 470 occurrences of RTIs attended by HEMS, of which 108 (23%) resulted in on-site fatalities. Among these deaths, 47 (26.85%) occurred in areas with low mobile phone signal coverage ("shadow areas"). Low mobile phone signal coverage identified at 175 (37.24%) RTIs locations, was unevenly distributed across the macro-region. The lowest medians of mobile signal quality were predominantly found in areas with HEMS travel times exceeding 30 min, corresponding to signal strength values of -98.44 (T3) and -100.75 (T4) dBm. This scenario represents a challenge for effective communication to activate HEMS. In the multiple comparison analysis among travel time groups, significant differences were observed between T1 and T2 (p < 0.001), T1 and T3 (p < 0.001), T1 and T4 (p < 0.001), and T2 and T3 (p < 0.001), indicating a potential association between lower mobile phone signal coverage and longer HEMS travel times. CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that poor mobile phone signals in remote areas can hinder HEMS activation, potentially delaying the start of treatment for RTIs. Identification of the shadow areas can help communication and health managers in designing and implementing the necessary changes to improve mobile phone signal coverage and consequently reduce delays in the initial response to RTIs.

Nanostructured microelectrodes (NMEs) are an attractive alternative to yield sensitive bioassays in unprocessed samples. However, although valuable for different applications, nanoporous NMEs usually cannot boost the sensitivity of diffusion-limited analyses because of the enlarged Debye length within the nanopores, which reduces their accessibility. To circumvent this limitation, nanopore-free gold NMEs were electrodeposited from 45 µm SU-8 apertures, featuring nanoridged microspikes on a recessed surface of gold thin film while carrying interconnected crown-like and spiky structures along the edge of a SU-8 passivation layer. These structures were grown onto ultradense, vertical array chips that offer a promising strategy for translating reproducible, high-resolution, and cost-effective sensors into real-world applications. The NMEs yielded reproducible analyses, while machine learning allowed us to predict the analytical responses from NME electrodeposition data. By taking advantage of the high surface area and accessible structure of the NMEs, these structures provided a sensitivity for [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- that was 5.5× higher than that of bare WEs while also delivering a moderate antibiofouling property in undiluted human plasma. As a proof of concept, these electrodes were applied toward the fast (22 min) and simple determination of Staphylococcus aureus by monitoring the oxidation of [Fe(CN)6]4-, which acted as a cellular respiration rate redox reporter. The sensors also showed a wide dynamic range, spanning 5 orders of magnitude, and a calculated limit of detection of 0.2 CFU mL-1.

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is a rickettsial disease caused by the bacteria Rickettsia rickettsii. In Brazil, the disease is known as Brazilian spotted fever (BSF), being the most significant tick-borne disease in the country. Among the affected patients, only 5% of cases occur in children aged one to nine years. Typical symptoms of the disease are fever, rash, headache and digestive symptoms. Neurological manifestations such as seizures, aphasia and hemiparesis have been described in few patients. This study aimed to describe the case of an infant diagnosed with BSF who presented severe signs of neurological manifestation.

Multiplexing is a valuable strategy to boost throughput and improve clinical accuracy. Exploiting the vertical, meshed design of reproducible and low-cost ultra-dense electrochemical chips, the unprecedented single-response multiplexing of typical label-free biosensors is reported. Using a cheap, handheld one-channel workstation and a single redox probe, that is, ferro/ferricyanide, the recognition events taking place on two spatially resolved locations of the same working electrode can be tracked along a single voltammetry scan by collecting the electrochemical signatures of the probe in relation to different quasi-reference electrodes, Au (0 V) and Ag/AgCl ink (+0.2 V). This spatial isolation prevents crosstalk between the redox tags and interferences over functionalization and binding steps, representing an advantage over the existing non-spatially resolved single-response multiplex strategies. As proof of concept, peptide-tethered immunosensors are demonstrated to provide the duplex detection of COVID-19 antibodies, thereby doubling the throughput while achieving 100% accuracy in serum samples. The approach is envisioned to enable broad applications in high-throughput and multi-analyte platforms, as it can be tailored to other biosensing devices and formats.

RESUMO Introdução: A medicina de família e comunidade (MFC) apresenta-se como uma carreira médica de importância social, porém seu crescimento nas regiões do Brasil ainda é pouco representativo, sendo necessário identificar os fatores que influenciam o estudante do curso de Medicina na escolha dessa carreira profissional. Objetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar fatores que influenciam o interesse pela residência em MFC pelos alunos do internato do curso de Medicina. Método: Trata-se de um estudo transversal, descritivo, de análise quantitativa, realizado com os alunos matriculados nos estágios do penúltimo e último anos dos cursos de Medicina de uma capital brasileira. Resultado: Participaram da pesquisa 229 estudantes matriculados no internato de Medicina. Aqueles que demonstraram interesse pela MFC eram, em sua maioria, jovens, de ambos os gêneros, na faixa etária entre 26 e 35 anos, casados, com filhos e renda familiar menor que cinco salários mínimos. Duas variáveis estiveram associadas à opção pela MFC: a faixa etária e a avaliação positiva acerca da especialidade. Conclusão: Compreender os fatores que influenciam na escolha da MFC pode contribuir para aprimorar a formação médica, alinhando as preferências dos estudantes com as necessidades da sociedade e do Sistema Único de Saúde.
ABSTRACT Introduction: Family and community medicine (FCM) is presented as a socially important medical career; however, its growth in regions of Brazil remains relatively low. It is necessary to identify the factors that influence medical students in their choice of this professional path. Objective: To analyse factors that influence interest in FCM residency among medical interns. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive, quantitative analysis study was conducted with students enrolled in the penultimate and final years of medical courses in a Brazilian capital city. Results: 229 medical interns participated in the research. Those interested in FCM are mostly young, of both genders, aged between 26 and 35, married, with children, and have a family income of less than five minimum wages. Two variables were associated with choosing FCM: age and positive evaluation of the specialty. Conclusion: Understanding the factors that influence the choice of FCM can contribute to improving medical education, aligning student preferences with the needs of society and the Public Healthcare System.

Resumo Trata-se de um Estudo de Avaliabilidade (EA) do Programa de Vigilância e Controle da Leishmaniose Visceral (PVCLV), com vistas à construção de bases para uma futura avaliação. Utilizou-se uma abordagem descritivo-qualitativa em quatro etapas: (1) Delimitação do programa; (2) Construção do modelo lógico, com a explicitação dos recursos necessários, atividades a serem desempenhadas e resultados esperados, bem como das matrizes avaliativas, com as dimensões de análise, categorias e indicadores; (3) Identificação de perguntas avaliativas e escolha do desenho da avaliação; (4) Recomendações dos autores sobre o PVCLV e a pertinência da realização da avaliação do programa. Este EA concluiu que a intervenção está apta a ser avaliada, porque foi possível identificar o delineamento da intervenção; o consenso entre os especialistas sobre ela; e a identificação de perguntas avaliativas que subsidiam uma posterior avaliação. Destaca-se a importância da participação de atores-chave em todas as etapas de desenvolvimento do estudo, os quais têm papel central no processo de desenvolvimento do programa nos diversos níveis de gestão. Espera-se que esta pré-avaliação contribua para identificação de prioridades e redirecionamento das ações, de modo a assegurar factibilidade na avaliação do PVCLV, gerando ações de intervenção em tempo oportuno.
Abstract This is an Evaluability Study (ES) of the Visceral Leishmaniasis Surveillance and Control Program, with a view to building bases for a future evaluation. A descriptive-qualitative approach was used in four steps: (1) Delimitation of the program; (2) Construction of the logical model, with the explanation of the necessary resources, the activities to be performed and the expected results, as well as the evaluative matrices, with the dimensions of analysis, categories and indicators; (3) Identification of evaluative questions and choice of evaluation design; (4) Authors' recommendations on Visceral Leishmaniasis Surveillance and Control Program and the pertinence of carrying out an evaluation of the program. This ES concluded that the intervention was able to be evaluated, because it was possible to identify the intervention design; the consensus among specialists about it; and the identification of evaluative questions that support a subsequent evaluation. It highlights the importance of the participation of key actors in all stages of the study's development, which have a central role in the program's development process at the various management levels. It is expected that this pre-assessment will contribute to identifying priorities and redirecting actions, to ensure feasibility in the assessment of Visceral Leishmaniasis Surveillance and Control Program, generating intervention actions promptly

Background: The Carbohydrate Counting (CC) is directly associated with achieving glycemic control by people with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM). Therefore, this study aims to analyze characteristics of the CC practice associated with the adequacy of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in adults with T1DM in Brazil. Methods: The study was cross-sectional, carried out using an online form with questions about knowledge of CC, clinical, anthropometric, sociodemographic data, follow-up with health professionals and understanding of the concepts of CC. Pearson's chi-square test and binomial logistic regression analysis (p<0.05) were applied. Results: 173 adults participated, of which 57.2% had increased HbA1c (≥7%). Having the diabetes duration <10 years (p=0.006), performing the CC at lunch (p=0.040) and dinner (p=0.018), using specific applications to perform the CC (p=0.001), having learned to perform CC with a nutritionist (p=0.037) and knowing how to correctly define the concepts of food bolus (p=0.001), correction bolus (p<0.001) and insulin/carbohydrate ratio (p<0.001) was associated with having adequate HbA1c (<7%). Participants who were undergoing CC practice were 3.273 times more likely to have adequate HbA1c and participants with diabetes duration <10 years were 2.686 times more likely to have adequate HbA1c. Conclusion: It was concluded that variables transversal to CC favor adequate HbA1c values in adults with T1DM and that practicing CC and having a diabetes duration of less than 10 years are predictive factors of having adequate HbA1c.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Brazil has many inequities in the healthcare provided nationwide. Therefore, in order to access challenges in treatment, available resources and current practices, to identify barriers in delivering a good quality of care among Brazilian centers treating children and adolescents with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) and to generate a future prospective guideline, a customized online survey was distributed to pediatric hematologists and oncologists across the country. Results: A total of 97 surveys were completed (35% response rate), from 47 cities in all Brazilian regions and 79 units of care, with a median of 1 answer by the center (range 1 - 5). Most respondents work at an institution supported exclusively by public/philanthropic resources (58%), with an average of 5 to 9 new cases/year (49%), and 41% have 4 to 6 oncologists/centers. Additionally, 22% have no easy access to the intensive care unit, 26% have no access to Rasburicase, 28% have no access to Rituximabe as front-line therapy and 41% have unreliable methotrexate monitoring levels. Those differences cannot be explained thoroughly by regional wealth variances, nor by the financing model. Regarding the pathology service, 70% consider having reasonable quality assistance, but the timeframe to deliver diagnosis is satisfactory to 46%. There is no uniform management of care, with the current guideline from the Sociedade Brasileira de Oncologia Pediátrica being adopted by 54 to 59%, depending on the NHL subtype. Conclusion: This study provides insights into the heterogeneity of care among Brazilian centers. Recognizing those diversities will support the design of effective strategies and collaboration nationwide.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most common form of acute leukemia in adults, with a 5-year overall survival rate of approximately 30%. Despite recent advances in therapeutic options, relapse remains the leading cause of death and poor survival outcomes. New drugs benefit specific small subgroups of patients with actionable therapeutic targets. Thus, finding new targets with greater applicability should be pursued. Olfactory receptors (ORs) are seven transmembrane G-protein coupled receptors preferentially expressed in sensory neurons with a critical role in recognizing odorant molecules. Recent studies have revealed ectopic expression and putative function of ORs in nonolfactory tissues and pathologies, including AML. Here, we investigated OR expression in 151 AML samples, 6400 samples of 15 other cancer types, and 11,200 samples of 51 types of healthy tissues. First, we identified 19 ORs with a distinct and major expression pattern in AML, which were experimentally validated by RT-PCR in an independent set of 13 AML samples, 13 healthy donors, and 8 leukemia cell lines. We also identified an OR signature with prognostic potential for AML patients. Finally, we found cancer-related genes coexpressed with the ORs in the AML samples. In summary, we conducted an extensive study to identify ORs that can be used as novel biomarkers for the diagnosis of AML and as potential drug targets.

Fruits have relevant usefulness in the elaboration of nutraceutical compositions and, as it is considered a "natural medicine", its market has been growing exponentially each year. Fruits, in general, contain a large source of phytochemicals, carbohydrates, vitamins, amino acids, peptides and antioxidants that are of interest to be prepared as nutraceuticals. The biological properties of its nutraceuticals can range from antioxidant, antidiabetic, antihypertensive, anti-Alzheimer, antiproliferative, antimicrobial, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, among others. Furthermore, the need for innovative extraction methods and products reveals the importance of developing new nutraceutical compositions. This review was developed by searching patents of nutraceuticals from January 2015 until January 2022 in Espacenet, the search database of the European Patent Office (EPO). Of 215 patents related to nutraceuticals, 43% (92 patents) were including fruits, mainly berries. A great number of patents were focused on the treatment of metabolic diseases, representing 45% of the total patents. The principal patent applicant was the United States of America (US), with 52%. The patents were applied by researchers, industries, research centers and institutes. It is important to highlight that from 92 fruit nutraceutical patent applications reviewed, 13 already have their products available on the market.

Introduction: Alto do Moura, a neighborhood located in the city of Caruaru, state of Pernambuco, Brazil, is known by the production of figurative art in clay, which uses wood as the main fuel in its finishing process. Chronic exposure to toxic gases released in combustion can trigger respiratory atopies. Objectives: To identify children with respiratory atopies accompanied by the Alto do Moura Family Health Unit and the spatial distribution of furnaces used in the burning of figurative art in clay. Methods: This was an exploratory, observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study analyzing 596 medical records of children with respiratory atopies living in the aforementioned neighborhood from July 2018 to October 2020. Fifty-two children aged 2 to 10 years were identified. A sociodemographic questionnaire was applied, and the location of furnaces, source of smoke, was mapped. Data were collected using the HC Maps® application, which stores and generates an electronic spreadsheet for analysis. The prevalence of respiratory atopies and the average distance between children's homes and furnaces were calculated. Results: A prevalence of respiratory atopies of 8.6% was found in the population studied. Allergic rhinitis was the most common diagnosis, followed by asthma. School-age children were the most affected group, and the average distance between children's homes and furnaces was 76.8 meters. Conclusions: The presence of environmental pollution resulting from burning wood for making figurative art in clay may be contributing to the occurrence of respiratory atopies in children. Preventive measures, such as using exhaust fans, opening windows, and increasing ventilation, should be encouraged.
Introdução: O bairro Alto do Moura, situado na cidade de Caruaru, no estado de Pernambuco, é conhecido pela produção de arte figurativa em barro, que utiliza madeira como principal combustível em seu processo de finalização. A exposição crônica aos gases tóxicos liberados na combustão pode desencadear atopias respiratórias. Objetivos: Identificar as crianças com atopias respiratórias atendidas na Unidade de Saúde da Família do Alto do Moura e a distribuição espacial das fornalhas utilizadas na queima da arte figurativa em barro. Métodos: Tratou-se de estudo exploratório, observacional-descritivo, transversal, mediante análise de 596 prontuários de crianças com atopias respiratórias residentes no bairro no período de julho de 2018 a outubro de 2020. Foram identificadas 52 crianças, na faixa etária de 2 a 10 anos. Foi aplicado formulário sociodemográfico, e a localização das fornalhas, fonte da fumaça, foi mapeada. Realizou-se a coleta dos dados com o aplicativo HC Maps®, que os armazena e gera planilha eletrônica para análise. Calculou-se a prevalência das atopias respiratórias e a distância média entre as residências das crianças e as fornalhas. Resultados: Encontrou-se uma prevalência de atopias respiratórias de 8,6% na população estudada. A rinite alérgica foi o diagnóstico mais comum, seguida de asma. Os escolares foram os mais acometidos, e a distância média entre as residências das crianças e a localização das fornalhas foi de 76,8 metros. Conclusões: A presença de poluição ambiental decorrente da queima da madeira para confecção da arte figurativa em barro pode estar contribuindo para a ocorrência de atopias respiratórias em crianças. Medidas preventivas, como uso de exaustores, abertura de janelas e melhoria na ventilação, devem ser estimuladas.
RESUMO
Doxycycline (DX) is a well-established and broad-spectrum antimicrobial drug. However, DX has drawbacks, such as physicochemical instability in aqueous media and bacterial resistance. The inclusion of drugs in cyclodextrin complexes and their loading into nanocarriers can overcome these limitations. Thus, we studied the DX/sulfobutylether-ß-CD (SBE-ß-CD) inclusion complex for the first time and used it to reticulate chitosan. The resulting particles were evaluated by their physicochemical characteristics and antibacterial activity. DX/SBE-ß-CD complexes were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), whereas DX-loaded nanoparticles were characterized by dynamic light scattering, SEM, and drug content. The partial inclusion of the DX molecule in CD happened in a 1:1 proportion and brought increased stability to solid DX upon thermal degradation. Chitosan-complex nanoparticles measured approximately 200 nm, with a narrow polydispersity and particles with sufficient drug encapsulation for microbiological studies. Both formulations preserved the antimicrobial activity of DX against Staphylococcus aureus, whereas DX/SBE-ß-CD inclusion complexes were also active against Klebsiella pneumoniae, indicating the potential use of these formulations as drug delivery systems to treat local infections.
RESUMO
Analisar o impacto do One Minute Preceptor na vivência da prática profissional de estudantes de fisioterapia de uma instituição de ensino superior que utiliza metodologia ativa de ensino no Nordeste brasileiro. Estudo de intervenção, qualiquantitativo, sequencial explanatório, realizado no centro de reabilitação, um dos cenários do hospital escola, com amostra de 20 estudantes e 10 preceptores. Ocorreu em quatro etapas, seguindo a resolução 510/16 do Conselho Nacional de Saúde, sob parecer 3.021.399. Análises quantitativas realizadas no Microsoft Office Excel 2016® e Software Rstudio®, a qualitativa conforme análise de conteúdo de Bardin. O One Minute Preceptor mostrou-se adequado a metodologia da instituição e perfil dos estudantes participantes. Estimulou, motivou e favoreceu o raciocínio crítico reflexivo, sendo percebido pelos grupos melhora na condução da preceptoria, feedback e postura ativa dos estudantes, possibilitando consolidar instrumentos facilitadores de ensino-aprendizagem em ambientes de prática clínica.
RESUMO
OBJECTIVE: Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages worldwide, and its production and consumption generate large amounts of by-products annually. Coffee by-products and coffee beans are rich in bioactive compounds of great commercial value, including potential applications as active ingredients in skin care products and cosmetic formulations. In addition, there has been growing interest in the use of natural ingredients for cosmetic purposes. Considering the importance of coffee in the world economy, its chemical constituents with potential for cosmetic and dermatological application, and the importance of patents for innovation and technological development, the present study aimed to review recent patents involving coffee and coffee by-product use in cosmetics. METHODS: This review was carried out using Espacenet. The following inclusion criteria were established: patents that included the terms "coffee" and "skin" in the title, abstract and claims and belonged to the classification A61Q, which is related to the "specific use of cosmetics or similar toilet preparations" considering the International Patent Classification (IPC) or Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC). RESULTS: Considering the 52 patents analysed, the bean was the main way to obtain extracts (39), followed by green beans (7), silverskin (3), peel and pulp (1), pulp (1) and beans and leaves (1). The formulations are mainly intended for use in nonspecific areas of skin (29), eye areas (12), scalp hair (9) and lip skin (2) with claims of anti-ageing, moisturizers, sun protection, hair growth, anti-dandruff, etc. CONCLUSION: Coffee and its residues have high amounts of phenolic compounds, caffeine, fatty acids and other substances known to have important biological properties for the skin. Coffee and its by-products are promising ingredients to be incorporated into topical formulations, ensuring skin health benefits and reducing the environmental impact.
OBJECTIF: Le café est l'une des boissons les plus consommées dans le monde, et sa production et sa consommation génèrent chaque année de grandes quantités de sous-produits. Les sous-produits du café et les grains de café sont riches en composés bioactifs d'une grande valeur commerciale, y compris des applications potentielles en tant qu'ingrédients actifs dans les produits de soins de la peau et les formulations cosmétiques. De plus, il y a eu un intérêt croissant pour l'utilisation d'ingrédients naturels à des fins cosmétiques. Compte tenu de l'importance du café dans l'économie mondiale, de ses constituants chimiques ayant un potentiel d'application cosmétique et dermatologique, et de l'importance des brevets pour l'innovation et le développement technologique, la présente étude visait à examiner les brevets récents concernant l'utilisation du café et des sous-produits du café dans les cosmétiques. MÉTHODES: Cette revue a été réalisée à l'aide d'Espacenet. Les critères d'inclusion suivants ont été établis: les brevets qui incluaient les termes "café" et "peau" dans le titre, l'abrégé et les revendications et appartenaient à la classification A61Q, qui est liée à "l'utilisation spécifique de cosmétiques ou de préparations de toilette similaires" compte tenu de la Classification internationale des brevets ou Classification coopérative des brevets. RÉSULTATS: Considérant les 52 brevets analysés, le grain était le principal moyen d'obtenir des extraits (39), suivi du grain vert (7), du silverskin (3), de la peau et de la pulpe (1), de la pulpe (1) et des grains et des feuilles (1). Les formulations sont principalement destinées à être utilisées dans des zones non spécifiques de la peau (29), des yeux (12), des cheveux du cuir chevelu (9) et de la peau des lèvres (2) avec des revendications anti-âge, hydratantes, protection solaire, croissance des cheveux, antipelliculaire, etc. CONCLUSION: Le café et ses résidus contiennent de grandes quantités de composés phénoliques, de caféine, d'acides gras et d'autres substances connues pour avoir des propriétés biologiques importantes pour la peau. Le café et ses sous-produits sont des ingrédients prometteurs à incorporer dans des formulations topiques, garantissant des bienfaits pour la santé de la peau et réduisant l'impact environnemental.
