RESUMO

This Focus Issue on instabilities and nonequilibrium structures includes invited contributions from leading researchers across many different fields. The issue was inspired in part by the "VII Instabilities and Nonequilibrium Structures 2019" conference that took place at the Pontifica Universidad Católica de Valparaiso, Chile in December 2019. The conference, which is devoted to nonlinear science, is one of the oldest conferences in South America (since December 1985). This session has an exceptional character since it coincides with the 80th anniversary of Professor Enrique Tirapegui. We take this opportunity to highlight Tirapegui's groundbreaking contributions in the field of random perturbations experienced by macroscopic systems and in the formation of spatiotemporal structures in such systems operating far from thermodynamic equilibrium. This issue addresses a cross-disciplinary area of research as can be witnessed by the diversity of systems considered from inert matter such as photonics, chemistry, and fluid dynamics, to biology.

RESUMO

We provide numerical solutions based on the path integral representation of stochastic processes for non-gradient drift Langevin forces in the presence of noise, to follow the temporal evolution of the probability density function and to compute exit times even for arbitrary noise. We compare the results with theoretical calculations, obtaining excellent agreement in the weak noise limit. This article is part of the theme issue 'Dissipative structures in matter out of equilibrium: from chemistry, photonics and biology (part 2)'.

RESUMO

We study the hydrodynamic phenomenon of waves blocking by a countercurrent with the tools of dynamical systems theory. We show that, for a uniform background velocity and within the small wavelength approximation, the stopping of gravity waves is described by a stationary saddle-node bifurcation due to the spatial resonance of an incident wave with the converted "blueshifted" wave. We explain why the classical regularization effect of interferences avoids the height singularity in complete analogy with the intensity of light close to the principal arc of a rainbow. The application to the behavior of light near a gravitational horizon is discussed.

RESUMO

The existence and stability of stable standing-wave patterns in an assembly of spatially distributed generic oscillators governed by a couple of complex Ginzburg-Landau equations, subjected to parametric forcing, are reported. The mechanism of a dispersion-induced pattern in dissipative oscillators parametrically forced near the degenerate Turing-Hopf bifurcation is also illustrated. We show that, when excitation occurs just after the Turing bifurcation and before the Hopf instability, the system exhibits a new type of stable standing-wave structures, namely the mixed-mode solutions. The Brussellator-model, parametrically forced below the threshold of oscillations, is analyzed as an example of calculation.

RESUMO

The intermittent route to spatiotemporal complexity is analyzed in simple models which display a subcritical bifurcation without hysteresis. A new type of spatiotemporal complex behavior is found, induced by fronts which "clean" the perturbations around an unstable state. The mechanism which generates these "retracting fronts" through nonlinear dispersion is analyzed in the frame of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. For sufficiently strong nonlinear dispersion the effects also occur for a supercritical bifurcation.
