We report data on the physicochemical properties of soils collected in two adjacent areas, one acid and one sub-alkaline, both developed on sequential beds of Plio-pleistocene marine sediments, and on the chemical composition of ecological solutions (rainfall, throughfall and stemflow) separately collected in the two areas. Throughfall and stemflow were generated by Turkey oak trees (Quercus cerris L.), which was the dominant tree species in both study areas. These data are related to the original article "Soil affects throughfall and stemflow under Turkey oak (Quercus cerris L.)" (Corti et al., 2019) [1].

This study deals with the characteristics of throughfall produced by vine (Vitis vinifera L.) in one of the most common pedoclimatic conditions for grape production: a soil derived from marine sediments under a temperate Mediterranean climate, and located rather close to the seacoast. To distinguish the contribution of the plant from that of the atmospheric deposition, the throughfall was collected for more than one year under real and artificial (plastic) vines; for the same period, also the bulk precipitation was collected. The solution collected were analysed for pH, electrical conductivity, and concentration of cations and anions. For each event, the ionic fluxes of bulk precipitation and throughfall were calculated. Results indicated that the chemical composition of the bulk precipitation was strongly influenced by the proximity of the seashore and, to a lesser extent, by local anthropic activities and windblown material coming from distant areas. The chemical composition of the throughfall was affected by the same factors of bulk precipitation, but also by solubilisation of dry deposition trapped by the canopies, agronomic practices, plant, and living-on-the-leaves microorganisms. The comparison of the characteristics of the throughfall of the real with the artificial vines revealed that the vines are a source of Mg and K. During winter season, the reduction of Ca, NH(4) and PO(4) from bulk precipitation to throughfall was ascribed to the formation of biogenic minerals on the plant surface. The presence of these minerals was proved by X-ray diffraction on the powders collected during the winter season on the surface of cordons and fruiting canes. We conclude that an approach to the estimation of the nutritional potentiality of the soil that includes the contribution of the throughfall is functional to the management of the agro-ecosystem.

RESUMO

Time of flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy has been used to study the metal distribution at the soil/root interface of tree roots extracted from smelter-impacted soils. The results, augmented by scanning electron microscopy, show that the technique is capable of resolving metal distributions at the cellular level. In addition, the distribution of metals between the root plaque and the root interior may be useful in interpreting local metal transport mechanisms.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of pesticide exposure on the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD), taking into account the potentially confounding factors (genetic, occupational exposure, and sociodemographic). The 1924 study participants (>70 years old) were randomly selected in the Saguenay-Lac Saint-Jean region (Quebec, Canada). The AD diagnosis was established in three steps according to recognized criteria. Sixty-eight cases were paired with a nondemented control for age (+/-2 years) and sex. Structured questionnaires addressed to subjects and proxy respondents allowed a description of the sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle characteristics, and residential, occupational, familial, and medical histories. Assessment of environmental exposure to pesticides was based on residential histories and the agriculture census histories of Statistics Canada (1971-1991) for herbicide and insecticide spraying in the area. Statistical analyses were performed with a logistic regression, adjusting for potential confounding factors. The results failed to show a significant risk of AD with an exposure to herbicides, insecticides, and pesticides. However, future investigations are needed to establish more precisely the identification, measurement, mobility, and bioavailability of neurotoxic pesticide residues in relation to AD.

The relationships between fluctuations in climatic conditions, forest productivity and elemental cycling were studied from 1994 to 1997 in a headwater catchment of the southern Laurentians dominated by sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) growing on podzolic soils. Annual budgets show that H+, K, and NO3 were retained in the watershed while Ca, Mg and Na were lost. The magnitude of the net annual budget for Ca, Mg and Na was correlated to annual variations in precipitation with the absolute budget value decreasing during dry years. Stemwood (r2 = 0.85) and total tree biomass production (r2 = 0.99) were correlated with mean annual temperature but fine roots and leaf litter were not. During the growing season, the pH of the organic horizons (FH) decreased as the volumetric water content of soil decreased. A positive association was also found between air temperature and H2O-soluble (r2 = 0.88) and PO4-extractable (r2 = 0.99) SO4 in the upper B horizon. On a multiyear scale, we suspect that the decrease in the storage of inorganic SO4 in the soil results from the cumulative effects of annual variations in climatic conditions superimposed on the long-term decrease in SO4 deposition from the atmosphere. These soil changes were reflected by a decline in SO4, Ca and Mg concentrations in the stream. The generalisation of the observed short-term patterns to longer time scales must be approached with caution. Yet, our results indicate that the associations between climatic variations and the biogeochemistry of the ecosystem occur at different spatial and temporal scales and integrate a broad range of chemical components and ecosystem compartments. This reflects the inherent complexity of natural systems and offers a vast palette of indicators of the response of terrestrial ecosystems to variations in the intensity of environmental factors such as climatic conditions.

The objective of this study was to assess the relation between long-term exposure to different aluminum (Al) forms in drinking water and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The study participants were selected from a random sample of the elderly population (> or = 70 years of age) of the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region (Quebec). Sixty-eight cases of Alzheimer's disease diagnosed according to recognized criteria were paired for age (+/-2 years) and sex with nondemented controls. Aluminum speciation was assessed using established standard analytical protocols along with quality control procedures. Exposure to Al forms (total Al, total dissolved Al, monomeric organic Al, monomeric inorganic Al, polymeric Al, Al(3+), AlOH, AlF, AlH(3)SiO(2+)(4), AlSO(4)) in drinking water was estimated by juxtaposing the subject's residential history with the physicochemical data of the municipalities. The markers of long-term exposures (1945 to onset) to Al forms in drinking water were not significantly associated with AD. On the other hand, after adjustment for education level, presence of family cases, and ApoE varepsilon4 allele, exposure to organic monomeric aluminum estimated at the onset of the disease was associated with AD (odds ratio 2.67; 95% CI 1.04-6.90). On average, the exposure estimated at the onset had been stable for 44 years. Our results confirm prime the importance of estimation of Al speciation and consideration of genetic characteristics in the assessment of the association between aluminum exposure and Alzheimer's disease.
