STUDY DESIGN: A case report of infective lumbar discitis following laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy. OBJECTIVES: To improve awareness of the possibility of surgical procedures for genital prolapse causing discitis by presenting a case history. BACKGROUND: Infective lumbar discitis following laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy is very rare. METHODS: Case history of a 63 year old lady who developed infective L5-S1 discitis three weeks following a laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy. CONCLUSION: Discitis following a laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy procedure is a very rare but significant complication.

Multivariate regression methods were used to create two equations for calculation of the "iron index," a predictor of bone marrow iron scores. With the use of the most efficient cut-off point, approximately 90% of 210 patients could be diagnosed correctly. Selection of a criterion that minimizes false negatives (missed iron deficiency) would increase the number of unnecessary bone marrow aspirations, but, even then, more than a third of such tests could be avoided. Rapid turnaround time would be desirable for all measurements used to calculate the iron index, although it is recognized that for most hospitalized patients the length of hospital stay is determined by severity of an underlying disease, not the presence of anemia.

Two methods of recovering normal contour of the orbit are presented in which ocularists and ophthalmologists equally participate. One method is for correction of the deep supratarsal retraction following soft tissue atrophy; the other technique is indicated when there has been loss of or major displacement of bone of the orbital rim. Frequently, these two techniques must be used concomitantly in complex reconstructive cases.
