RESUMO

Unicellular algae called diatoms morph biomineral compounds into tough exoskeletons via complex intracellular processes about which there is much to be learned. These exoskeletons feature a rich variety of structures from submicroscale to milliscale, many that have not been reproduced in vitro. In order to help understand this complex miniature morphogenesis, here we introduce and analyse a simple model of biomineral kinetics, focusing on the exoskeleton's submicroscopic patterned planar structures called pore occlusions. The model reproduces most features of these pore occlusions by retuning just one parameter, thereby indicating what physio-biochemical mechanisms could sufficiently explain morphogenesis at the submicroscopic scale: it is sufficient to identify a mechanism of lateral negative feedback on the biomineral reaction kinetics. The model is nonlinear and stochastic; it is an extended version of the threshold voter model. Its mean-field equation provides a simple and, as far as the authors are aware, new way of mapping out the spatial patterns produced by lateral inhibition and variants thereof.

RESUMO

Two new diatom species, Haslea salstonica and Haslea pseudostrearia are described in light and electron microscopy and compared with two well-known members of Haslea. Scanning electron microscope observations confirm that the new species belong to the genus Haslea. This study extends previous observations on the genus, particularly with respect to the development of a pseudostauros. The characteristic features of the genus are discussed briefly.

RESUMO

As EC validity criteria for the production of Daphnia magna neonates in standard toxicity tests set fecundity minima which must be attained, it is important that culture conditions provide an adequate ration of high quality food. Maintaining a steady supply of fresh algae can be problematical so the possibility of using frozen food was investigated. The performance of three generations of D. magna fed on diets of fresh or frozen Chlorella was compared. There were no significant effects on fecundity due to food type or generation. Cumulative fecundity (over 21 days) on fresh or frozen food exceeded 120 neonates per female and satisfied that EC validity criterion (60 neonates per female). In addition criteria relating to survival and variability were met. We conclude that frozen Chlorella are an acceptable substitute for fresh algae.

RESUMO

In 2 patients presenting with fever of undeterminated origin, cryptogenic suppurative pylethrombosis caused by Bacteroides fragilis was diagnosed. Combined antibiotic and anticoagulant therapy resulted in recanalization of the thrombosed vessels. The role of ultrasonography and computed tomography scan in the diagnosis and follow-up of this rare condition is discussed.

RESUMO

Three patients are described with septic sacroiliitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus, two occurring spontaneously and a third following septic thrombophlebitis. The diagnosis and treatment of this rather rare disease are discussed based upon our findings and the literature data.

RESUMO

It has been shown by in vitro translation of polyadenylated messenger RNAs (poly(A)+ mRNAs) that the mRNAs encoding both alpha and beta tubulin isotypes are present at much higher relative levels in the developing rat brain than they are in the adult, suggesting that the requirements for tubulin subunits vary with cell type and/or with the developmental stages of a particular cell type. The postnatally developing rat cerebellum, with its readily identifiable cell populations that perform the gamut of developmental tasks, is a suitable model for analyzing specific cellular mRNA distributions during development. In this report, by in situ hybridization techniques it is shown that, by comparison to total cellular poly(A)+ mRNA levels, there is relatively more of the total beta tubulin mRNAs in mitotically active external granule layer cells than in those in the internal granule layer. These results show that migration and differentiation of these granule cells is accompanied by a decrease in their beta tubulin mRNA levels relative to the levels in granule cells of the external granule cell layer. Furthermore, the relative levels of beta tubulin mRNA both in the prenatally formed Purkinje cells and the postnatally formed stellate cells are two to fourfold less than in the granule cells of the internal granule cell layer.
