RESUMO
Two previous studies of tooth mortality of similar populations were conducted in 1964 and 1969. The study was therefore repeated in 1982 to assess any discernible trends. It was found that there has been a marked reduction in mortality rates amongst all teeth except premolars in the younger age groups. The reduction was attributed to an improved dental service in conjunction with an increased public awareness of matters relating to dental health. The rise in mortality of premolars was correlated to the increased practice of orthodontics which demanded the relief of crowding.

The results of survey of tooth mortality, in a group of 1,507 patients attending the Conservation Department of a dental teaching hospital in Leeds, U.K., are reported. Comparisons are drawn with the results of a previous study carried out in 1964-65 and with a survey of a general population. The results suggest that there is a general tendency for tooth mortality to be lower in the present survey and this change is particularly noticeable for maxillary incisor and canine teeth. The significance of these results is discussed and various hypotheses are suggested to explain them.

The historical development and important properties of composite resins are briefly reviewed. Experimental work has been undertaken to examine the marginal adaptation of three commerically available composite resins in 100 Class II and Class V restorations; dye penetration tests were used and measurement of the gap at the tooth/restoration interface as recorded in photographs obtained by scanning electron microscopy of replicas. In Class V restorations showing marginal leakage by dye penetration the gap at the tooth/restoration interface was in all cases greater cervically than occlusally. The results underline the uncertainly of obtaining a good marginal seal with composite resins both peripherally and along internal line angles.
