In this work, we describe an ion mass spectra processing method from plasmas generated in Ar and Ar/H2 gases in contact with tungsten surfaces. For this purpose, advanced model functions, i.e., those suitable for fitting the experimental mass peak profiles, are used. In addition, the peak positions, peak shapes, abundances, and ion ratios are the parameters considered for building these functions. In the case of a multielement magnetron target, the calibration of the mass spectra with respect to the peak shape and position on the m/z scale is helpful in reducing the number of free variables during fitting. The mass spectra fitting procedure is validated by the obtained isotopic abundances of W ions in W/Ar magnetron plasmas, which, in turn, are comparable with their natural abundance. Moreover, its usefulness is exemplified by calculating the ratio of WH+/W+ ions in W/Ar/H2 plasma. This work paves the way for obtaining relevant results regarding ion species in plasma even in the case of using general-purpose mass spectrometers with limited resolution and accuracy. Although this method is illustrated for the W/Ar/H2 plasma system, it can be easily extendable to any plasma type.

This work is focused on the application of a laser-based technique, i.e., matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (MAPLE) for the development of electrochemical sensors aimed at the detection of nitrites in water. Commercial carbon-based screen-printed electrodes were modified by MAPLE via the application of a newly developed composite coating with different concentrations of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), chitosan, and iron (II) phthalocyanine (C32H16FeN8). The performance of the newly fabricated composite coatings was evaluated both by investigating the morphology and surface chemistry of the coating, and by determining the electro-catalytic oxidation properties of nitrite with bare and modified commercial carbon-based screen-printed electrode. It was found that the combined effect of CNTs with chitosan and C32H16FeN8 significantly improves the electrochemical response towards the oxidation of nitrite. In addition, the MAPLE modified screen-printed electrodes have a limit of detection of 0.12 µM, which make them extremely useful for the detection of nitrite traces.

Insulin resistance (IR) and cardiometabolic disorders are the main consequences of today's alimentary behavior. This study evaluates the effects of a chronic-discontinuous treatment with alpha-lipoic acid (AL), an antioxidant substance that improves glycemic control associated with diabetes mellitus, on metabolic disorders and plasma oxidative stress induced by fructose intake, in rats. Sprague-Dawley rats (48 animals) were randomized into two series (n = 24): rats fed with standard chow or with standard chow supplemented with 60% fructose. In each of the two series, for 2 weeks/month over 12 weeks, a group of rats (n = 12) was intraperitoneally injected with NaCl 0.9%, and a second group (n = 12) received AL 50mg/kg/day. Body weight, glycemia, and systolic blood pressure were monitored throughout the study. After 12 weeks, IR, plasma lipoproteins, uric acid, transaminase activities, and oxidative stress markers were assessed. The high fructose-enriched diet induced cardiometabolic disorders (hypertension, hyperglycemia, IR and dyslipidemia), an increase in uric acid concentration, transaminase activities and C-reactive protein level. This diet also enhanced plasma products of lipid and protein oxidation, homocysteine level, and decreased GSH/GSSG ratio. In this field, there is evidence to indicate that oxidative stress plays an important role in the etiology of diabetic complications. AL discontinuous treatment prevents the metabolic disorders induced by fructose intake, reduced plasma lipid and protein oxidation-products, and restored the GHS/GSSG ratio. Our study proves a promising potential of the chronic-discontinuous treatment of AL and highlights the pleiotropic effects of this antioxidant substance in metabolic disorders such as diabetes.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this issue is to create an experimental animal model of dry eye and study the alteration of lachrymal secretion in time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used a group of 8 rabbits in which the Meibomian gland orifices of the right eye were individually closed by cauterization, the results being related to the sound left eye. RESULTS: We studied: the quantitative alteration of the lachrymal secretion using Schirmer 1 test; the alteration of lachrymal film using rose-bengal and fluorescein staining; the variation in tear protein concentration and histopathological changes in conjunctiva. CONCLUSIONS: We found histopathological changes in conjunctiva and in the lachrymal secretion consisting in conjunctival goblet-ceil density decrease and watery secretion increase, probably due to lachrymal viscosity decrease mechanism.
