RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Health Star Rating (HSR) is a front-of-pack label designed to help Australian consumers identify healthier packaged foods. Price is an important determinant of food choice and yet no previous studies have examined the relationship between HSR and price. In the present study, we investigated whether (i) healthier packaged food products, as determined by HSR, are more expensive than less healthy alternatives and (ii) products displaying the HSR are more expensive than similar products that do not. METHODS: Prices of three packaged foods categories (breakfast cereals, cereal-based bars and fruit juices) and nutrient data (to calculate HSR) were obtained from shopping receipts of approximately 1600 Australians between June 2014 and September 2016. Associations between HSR and price [per energy ($/100 kJ) and per unit ($/100 g)] for products of comparable package sizes were assessed by linear regression and the results are presented as differences in average price over the theoretical maximum range of HSR from 0.5 to 5 stars. RESULTS: The HSR of products was not consistently related to price. Small positive associations were observed for juice ($0.08/100 mL; P = 0.03) and for cereal-based bars ($0.04/100 kJ; P = 0.02). No other associations between HSR and price were observed (P ≥ 0.23). Products that displayed the HSR were no more expensive on average than products that received a similar HSR but did not display the HSR (P ≥ 0.16). CONCLUSIONS: In summary, the findings of the present study suggest that healthier packaged food products were not consistently more expensive than less healthy products and also that price is unlikely to be a barrier for consumers to use the HSR to select healthier packaged foods.

RESUMO

Thirty-one infants with West syndrome were followed up. Their cognitive competence was assessed before the onset of the disease, and during and after the acute stage. Two kinds of cognitive impairment were identified: the first was transitory, linked to the acute stage and mainly consisting of arousal disturbances; the second was the well known long-term sequela. It is not possible to exclude the aetiological role of a persistent, severe epileptic change: however, this study emphasizes the prognostic value of previous mental impairment. In serial cognitive assessment during the acute stage, the progression of the developmental quotient was the best indicator of a good mental outcome, and vice versa.

RESUMO

Lymphocyte subpopulations, both in peripheral blood and in liver specimens obtained with the Menghini needle, were evaluated by E and EA rosette technique in 30 patients with chronic active hepatitis (CAH), 8 patients with chronic persistent hepatitis (CPH), 11 patients with acute viral hepatitis (AVH) and 11 patients with normal histology or minimal non-specific changes. Circulating E-RCF concentration and percentage were significantly decreased in CAH and CPH patients. Only one patient with acute hepatitis had a decreased number of circulating E-RFC. The ratio of peripheral blood E-RFC to liver tissue E-RFC was decreased in the patient with chronic disease. In all the groups studied, the percentage of liver tissue and peripheral EA-RFC was similar to that found in the blood from controls. Significant differences were not found between patients with and without evidence for HB viral infection.

RESUMO

HBeAg and anti-HBe were tested by RIA (Abbott Kits) in 53 patients (38 HBsAg +) with acute viral hepatitis (AVH), in 27 patients (5 HBsAg +) with chronic active hepatitis (CAH), in 54 (8 HBsAg +) with cirrhosis, in 32 (17 HBsAg +) undergoing haemodialysis, in 6 HBsAg carriers and in 45 controls. Most of the patients with HBsAg + AVH were HBeAg + in the first week and showed seroconversion to anti-HBe within the fourth week of the illness. Two from the four patients still HBeAg + in the fourth week seroconverted later on and clinically recovered, one is still HBsAg +/HBeAg + in the seventh week and one developed CAH HBsAg +/HBeAg +. High prevalence of HBeAg was found in the haemodialysed (94%) and in the patients with CAH (80%) while anti-HBe was more frequent in the HBsAg carriers (100%) and in the cirrhotics (62,5%). Among the patients HBsAg-, none was HBeAg + while 18% with CAH, 21,7% with cirrhosis, 26,6% of the haemodialysed and 4% of the controls were anti-HBe +. Our data, relating to AVH, are similar to those referred in the literature, but show conversely high prevalence of anti-HBe in CAH and in cirrhosis.

RESUMO

The prevalence of the anti-HBc antibodies was studied in 54 patients with chronic liver disease and in a group of controls pair-matches. The meaning of the anti-HBc antibodies titer in the patients HBsAg negative is discussed. From our data, obtained by Radioimmunoassay, anti-HBc titers I:I000 seem to indicate an ongoing or recent viral replication, being probative, even in the absence of the HBsAg marker, for the viral etiology.
