RESUMO

Depression negatively affects life satisfaction, and rumination is a major feature of depression. As a transdiagnostic process, Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) includes rumination and other repetitive and persistent thoughts. The study examines differences in rumination, RNT, and life satisfaction according to the severity of depressive symptoms and investigate the role of rumination and RNT as mediator variables in the association between depressive symptomatology and life satisfaction. An online sample of 432 participants completed a set of self-report measures. The findings suggest that rumination and RNT increase with the severity of depressive symptom. RNT was a mediator variable in the association between depressive symptomatology and life satisfaction beyond the mediating role of rumination. Overall, the current results highlight the central role of RNT in the relationship between depressive symptomatology and well-being by promoting a broader transdiagnostic process as RNT compared to rumination in depressive symptomatology (AU)

RESUMO

Objectives: Life events have important effects on psychological well-being. Yet, studies have mainly focused on exploring the impact of traumatic and negative experiences on health and well-being, with positive events receiving marginal attention. In this study, we investigated the association between negative and positive life events, cognitive performance and psychological status in older individuals. Method: A cross-sectional approach with a sample of 97 community-dwelling adults, recruited from a network of 23 centres/institutions in Northern Portugal, and aged between 56 and 85 years, was conducted. All participants were evaluated through a battery of tests assessing for depressive mood, perceived stress, and cognitive functioning. Life events were measured using the Lifetime Experiences Scale (LIFES) which covers 75 life experiences organized in eight domains. Results: A total of 95.9% of the participants reported more positive life events than negative throughout life. Participants reporting more positive experiences had lower scores in the depressive mood and perceived stress measures. At the domain-level of LIFES scale, more negative experiences in the Work and Health domains were associated with a depressed mood and more perceived stress. Significant positive associations were found between positive life experiences and most cognitive measures, after controlling for sex, education, age and depressive symptoms. Namely, more positive experiences at School, Leisure, and Living conditions were positively associated with better performance across cognitive tests. Discussion: This study adds important evidence on the association between of life events, both negative and positive experiences, on cognition and psychological well-being, providing a more balanced view of the field.

A guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) cub presented edema, pain, and crepitus in the right pelvic limb after being attacked by a dog. Radiographic examination revealed Salter-Harris type 1 fracture on the distal region of the tibia. The surgery technique to correct the fracture involved an association of transarticular pinning and external coaptation with Altman splint. After surgery, radiographs of the patient were performed weekly and on the 35th post-surgery day, the bone was completely remodeled and healed, and the animal was dismissed.(AU)

The omentum has been used in different surgical procedures as an alternative for its capacity, among others, of angiogenesis, being applied in veterinary orthopedics, when there is a risk of non-union of bone. In this case, a Brazilian row dog was submitted to grafting with pedicle flap of greater omentum, after resistant osteomyelitis present in open fracture osteosynthesis of open tibia grade II. For 16 days the communication of the flap was maintained, but at the risk of peritonitis, the pedicle was sectioned. In a sequence of surgical interventions, after 89 days, there was bone healing and remission of osteomyelitis, even in the presence of multi-resistant bacteria. In this report, the omentum was effective as adjuvant therapy in the treatment of osteomyelitis and guaranteed the return of limb function.(AU)

Despite the beneficial goals of fluid therapy administered during surgery, volume overload can cause deleterious effects, such as alterations on hematimetric parameters. Thus, the objective of this paper was to evaluate two different cristaloid infusion rates during the surgical period and its effects on the 24-hour post-surgical period. Two groups of six animals each were used in the present study, one received 10mL/kg/h (G10) of 0,9% sodium chloride solution and the other 5mL/kg/h (G5) of the same solution. Packed cell volume (PCV) was evaluated in 10 different times during the 24 hours following surgery. The results did not show significant differences between groups, but they showed a major tendency of hemodilution in G10. A significant decrease of PCV was observed after induction of anesthesia. Decrease of PCV after the end of surgery in both groups was also observed, and the return to PCV basal values was observed 12 hours after the procedure in G10 and after eight hours in G5, showing a tendency of prolonged hemodilution in G10.(AU)

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of monensin supplementation on animals receiving warm-season grass with limited supplementation. In Exp. 1, treatments were a factorial combination of 2 stocking rates (1.2 and 1.7 animal unit [AU] [500 kg BW]/ha) and supplementation with monensin (200 mg/d) or control (no monensin) distributed in a complete randomized design with 3 replicates. Thirty Angus × Brahman crossbred heifers (Bos taurus × Bos indicus) with initial BW of 343 ± 8 kg were randomly allocated into 12 bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum) pastures and supplemented with 0.4 kg DM of concentrate (14% CP and 78% TDN) daily for 86 d. Herbage mass (HM) and nutritive value evaluations were conducted every 14 d, and heifers were weighed every 28 d. There was no effect (P ≥ 0.97) of monensin on HM, herbage allowance (HA), and ADG; however, animals receiving monensin had greater (P = 0.03) plasma urea nitrogen (PUN) concentrations. The stocking rate treatments had similar HM in June (P = 0.20) and July (P = 0.18), but the higher stocking rate decreased (P < 0.01) HM and HA during August and September. Average daily gain was greater (P < 0.01) for the pastures with the lower stocking rate in August but not different in July and September (P ≥ 0.15). Gain per hectare tended to be greater on pastures with the higher stocking rate (P ≤ 0.06). In Exp. 2, treatments were 3 levels of monensin (125, 250, and 375 mg/animal per day) and control (no monensin) tested in a 4 × 4 Latin square with a 10-d adaptation period followed by 5 d of rumen fluid collection and total DMI evaluation. Blood samples were collected on d 4 and 5 of the collection period. Ground stargrass (Cynodon nlemfuensis) hay (11.0% CP and 52% in vitro digestible organic matter) was offered daily. The steers received the same supplementation regimen as in Exp. 1. Total DMI was not different among treatments (P = 0.64). There was a linear increase (P ≤ 0.01) in propionate and a tendency for decreased acetate (P ≤ 0.09) concentrations in the rumen with increasing levels of monensin; however, there was no effect (P ≥ 0.19) of monensin levels on ruminal pH and ruminal concentrations of butyrate and ammonia. In addition, there was no effect (P ≥ 0.73) of monensin levels on plasma concentrations of glucose, insulin, IGF-1, and PUN. In summary, monensin supplementation effects were not detected at either stocking rate and may not be effective in increasing performance of beef cattle grazing low-quality warm-season grasses with limited supplementation.

PURPOSE: There is, today, a global tendency towards a surgical approach privileging very small incisions, the so-called minimally invasive intervention, which results in a less aggressive action. The introduction of this new technique makes it possible to dissect the left internal thoracic artery (LITA) and to perform in the anastomosis with the anterior interventricular artery (AIA) through a left minithoracotomy. METHODS: From May of 1996 to october of 1997, 11 patients with ischemic heart disease and a single proximal lesion of the AIA were submitted to a myocardial revascularization (MR). The surgical approach consisted of a left anterolateral thoracotomy through the 4th left intercostal space, of approximately 10 cm, and in the last 6 cases, resection of part of the cartilage of the 4th and 5th ribs, dissection of the LITA, as well as opening and repair of the pericardium adjacent to the AIA was done. All patients received a single bypass to the AIA with a graft of the LITA, without extracorporeal circulation. RESULTS: The patients' age varied between 46 and 76 years (mean = 58.55). Ten patients (90.90%) were males and 1 (9.09%) was a female. Hospital stay ranged from 4 to 8 days, with the average of 5.2 days. None of the patients presented any electrocardiographic change in the immediate post-operatory period. During the control period one patient developed a clot in the distal LITA, with important compromise of the flow. In another patient the stenosis was at the level of the anastomosis. Both were successfully submitted to angioplasty. There were no deaths in the groups studied. CONCLUSION: The absence of deaths suggests to us that MR surgery carried out with this minimally invasive technique, in selected groups and is an excellent alternative to the revascularization of the AIA.

RESUMO

A detailed procedure for the isolation of a new clotting enzyme from the venom of Bothrops jararacussu (common name jararacuçu) is described. The estimated mol. wt of the native protein was 30,100 but 37,500 after reduction by dithiothreitol. Two major close bands corresponding to pI 5.18 and 5.20 were detected by electrofocusing but, after methanolysis, a single band focused at pI 8.20. The mol. wt of the protein moiety of this glycoprotein was 28,500, showing V-V-G-A-D-N-C-N-F-N... as N-terminal sequence. The content of neutral sugar was 4.8% and that of total sugars 5.3%. This clotting factor degraded only the A alpha-chain of the fibrinogen molecule. The stability of the clot, when produced in the presence of aprotinin opens new uses for snake clotting enzymes in the production of fibrin glue.

RESUMO

Intravenous injection into the rat of sublethal doses of Tityus serrulatus scorpion venom (100 micrograms protein/kg) or its major neurotoxin tityustoxin-I (TsTX-I, 20 micrograms/kg) caused, 30-180 min after injection, statistically significant increases in the serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase, amylase, creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase, as well as hyperglycemia, a high level of plasma free fatty acids and a low level of liver glycogen. The in vitro serum levels of the above enzymes did not change. For alanine aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyl transferase and alkaline phosphatase, neither in vitro nor in vivo alterations were observed. The whole venom and TsTX-I caused hepatic congestion with hemolysis and hydropic degeneration. Other histological lesions included edema and congestion with subpleural hemorrhage in the lungs, hypertrophy of fibers with degeneration areas in the heart, and congestion and hemorrhage in the kidneys. In the salivary glands, alterations to the acini and ductules were visible. In the adrenal glands no morphological alterations could be detected at the studied doses. The results suggest that the in vivo enzymatic and histopathological alterations are due to tissue lesions evoked by the whole venom and TsTX-I. An indirect effect, however, induced by stimulation of acetylcholine and catecholamine release in the postganglionic nerve terminals, cannot be excluded.

RESUMO

The antibothropic complex (ABC) from opossum (species Didelphis albiventris) serum was purified by chromatography on DEAE-Sephacel. It showed an acidic character and two polypeptide chains of ca. 45 kDa and 48 kDa, respectively. Lyophilized opossum serum or the ABC (100 micrograms), as well as ethylenediamine tetraacetate (0.25 mumoles) were able to completely neutralise the hemorrhagic effect of 50 micrograms of the desiccated venoms of Bothrops moojeni, Bothrops pirajai and Bothrops jararacussu. The myotoxic (100 micrograms venom in mice) and edematogenic (90 micrograms venom in rats) activities of Bothrops moojeni and Bothrops jararacussu venoms, as well as of the major myonecrotic protein (myotoxin-I) isolated from Bothrops moojeni venom, were also totally inhibited by the ABC (200 micrograms and 270 micrograms, respectively). The lyophilized opossum serum (30 micrograms) and the ABC (30 micrograms) reduced to 50% the phospholipase A2 activity of Bothrops moojeni venom (10 micrograms). The clotting activity of Bothrops alternatus and Bothrops moojeni (20 micrograms) on bovine plasma was also significantly inhibited by the ABC (60 micrograms).

RESUMO

Nine-year-old female patient presented with cianosis since she was born, fatique and dyspnea when sucking. The diagnosis was univentricular heart with left ventricular morphology, transposition of the great arteries, moderate pulmonary valve stenosis and atrial septal defect. Submitted to surgical correction with superior vena cava-right pulmonary artery anastomosis, inferior vena cava anastomosis using lateral tunnel, with cardiopulmonary bypass. After surgical correction, the clinical and laboratorial (echocardiogram and cardiac catheterization) evaluation showed Fontan operation with good surgical results. Total cavopulmonary connection was proposed as a modification of the Fontan procedure that might have greater benefits than previous proposed techniques. The results demonstrate that this modification provides excellent early definitive treatment, increasing hemodynamic profile, with low morbidity and mortality, for a variety of complex congenital heart lesions.

RESUMO

Whole desiccated venom of Bothrops pirajai was fractionated on a gel filtration (Sephadex G-75) column. Phospholipase A2, arginine esterase and clotting activity profiles of the six fractions (SI to SVI) obtained were determined. Fraction SIV from the gel filtration column was subjected to chromatography on SP-Sephadex C-25. It was resolved into five subfractions (SIV-SP1, to SIV-SP5). Fractions SIV-SP1, SIV-SP2 and SIV-SP3 showed phospholipase A2 activity but, among these fractions, only SIV-SP3 was homogeneous. Induction of myonecrosis by SIV-SP3, SIV-SP4 and SIV-SP5 was demonstrated by their ability to release serum creatine kinase, and for SIV-SP5, to induce histological alterations in the injected mouse muscle. Chemical characterization by determination of mol. wts, isoelectric focusing and direct manual sequencing of the N-terminal region was performed for SIV-SP3, SIV-SP4 and SIV-SP5. When compared with bothropstoxin-I, the myotoxin SIV-SP5 showed the same total number of amino acid residues (121) and constant molar ratio for all but three amino acids. We have named this toxin piratoxin-I (PrTX-I).

RESUMO

Bothrops insularis snake venom was fractionated by gel filtration on Sephadex G-150 followed by ion-exchange chromatography on SP-Sephadex C-25. Two active fractions were purified to homogeneity: (1) SIII-SpI, approximate mol. wt 32,000 and N-terminal amino acid residue Val. This fraction showed esterase activity on TAME, edema-inducing activity on the rat hind paw and contractile activity on the isolated guinea pig ileum. The latter two activities were antagonized by benadryl plus methysergide; (2) SIII-SpVI, a myonecrotic and edema-inducing phospholipase, approximate mol. wt 29,000, N-terminal amino acid residue pyro-Glu, consisting of two chains of approximately 15,000 mol. wt each linked by disulphide bridge(s). The induction of edema by this fraction was not antagonized by benadryl plus methysergide, indomethacin, BW755C or BN52021, but it was antagonized by dexamethasone. Three highly purified hemorrhagic heterodimeric fractions, SIII-SpIII-3, SIII-SpIII-4 and SIII-SpIII-5, of approximate mol. wts 26,000, 29,000 and 26,000, and having N-terminal residues of Asx, Asx and Gly, respectively, were further isolated by preparative polyacrylamide slab gel electrophoresis. SIII-SpIII-4 and SIII-SpIII-5 increased the recalcification time of citrated rat plasma. None of the five isolated fractions showed any proteolytic (on casein) or kininogenase activity.

RESUMO

Clearances of inulin and para-aminohippuric acid were performed in 22 newborn infants without renal disease. Ages varied from 12 hours to 25 days. The mean values of inulin and PAH clearances during the first four days of life were 10.8 +/- 1.0 ml/min/m2 and 30.8 +/- ml/min/m2, respectively. A twofold increase in glomerular filtration rate was observed during the first 14 days of life. A similar increase in PAH clearance occurred during this period. No correlation was found between gestational age (range: 32 to 39 weeks) and GFR in ten neonates studied during the first four days after birth.
