RESUMO

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is widely recognized as a leading cause of pneumonia, with substantial mortality, in bone marrow transplant recipients. We tested the efficacy of a systemic monoclonal antibody (MAB) preparation possessing a high titer of anti-RSV neutralizing antibody, palivizumab (Synagis) for prophylaxis and therapy of RSV infection in cytoxan (CY) immunosuppressed cotton rats, a model in which the efficacy of a polyclonal anti-RSV product (Respigam) has been demonstrated. Both prophylaxis and therapy with this MAB were highly effective in reducing pulmonary viral replication. However, multiple sequential therapeutic doses of MAB were necessary to control rebound viral replication in continually suppressed animals.

RESUMO

This article describes and illustrates an alternative procedure for making an immediate removable partial denture with a metal framework and a dual path of insertion. It has several advantages over the conventional method for making immediate removable partial dentures and some disadvantages.

RESUMO

This article describes a procedure to generate functional path occlusion for ceramometal restorations. With this procedure, the metal framework is formed conventionally, full contour inlay wax is added to the metal framework, and the patient carves functional paths into the wax. These paths are registered with a stone matrix that the ceramist uses as a guide. Advantages over conventional techniques include increased accuracy and simplification of procedures.

RESUMO

This study investigated the early erosion of glass ionomer-cement that had been used to lute complete cast crowns. Restorations had margins ending on either enamel or cementum and had various sizes of marginal openings. These restorations were compared to those using a standard zinc phosphate cement. Results showed that leaving the band of excess cement, expressed during the seating of the crown, undisturbed for 10 minutes prevented significant erosion in a wet field. A resin coat was not necessary to provide further protection after removal of the band. Zinc phosphate cement also showed significant early erosion when exposed to moisture.

RESUMO

When both fixed and removable components are required, provisional restorations can be difficult. This article describes a technique where provisional restoration "shells" are made with a plastic stent of the diagnostic wax-up on lightly prepared teeth of a diagnostic cast. An acrylic removable partial denture is then waxed to the shells. The shells are relined intraorally after tooth preparation with the partial denture in place.

RESUMO

This study was designed to compare the dietary intakes of patients with anorexia nervosa and normal controls. Twenty-four patients hospitalized for treatment of anorexia nervosa were compared with 10 normal controls. Patients ate a self-selected diet and maintained their admission weight to within 1.0 kg during this period (19 +/- 3 days). Food chosen by each subject was weighed before and after meals, and intake was determined to be the difference. Intakes of food energy, protein, fat, and carbohydrate were calculated. Patients were closely monitored to ensure that no disposal of food occurred. Patients with anorexia nervosa had a mean daily energy intake of 1,017 +/- 54 kcal (mean +/- SEM), significantly lower than the mean energy intake for controls (1,651 +/- 108 kcal). Similarly, mean intakes of macronutrients (41 +/- 4 gm protein, 34 +/- 2 gm fat, and 136 +/- 9 gm carbohydrate) were significantly lower for patients than for controls (68.5 +/- gm protein, 65 +/- 6 gm fat, and 204 +/- 13 gm carbohydrate). However, when protein, fat, and carbohydrate were assessed as a percent of total calories, there were no significant differences between patients and controls. There were also no significant differences in calories consumed per kilogram body weight. Underweight patients with anorexia nervosa who maintain their weight on an unrestricted hospital diet have energy intake per kilogram body weight and dietary macronutrient content indistinguishable from those of normal women.
