RESUMO

This work is an imaging review of spine after surgery with special regard to imaging modality in intervertebral disc pathology. Advances in imaging technology can be evaluated. Depending on the clinical question is asked to the radiologist, it is possible to evaluate post-operative patients with conventional radiology (X-ray), computed tomography and magnetic resonance. Main indications for each technique are analysed. Imaging is important in the diagnosis of many forms of spine pathology and plays a fundamental role in evaluating post-surgical effects of treatments, according to the imaging method which is used, both on spine and on its surrounding tissues (intervertebral discs, spinal cord, muscles and vessels).

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the long term outcomes after surgery in tympanomastoid paragangliomas. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. METHODS: The charts of 145 patients with tympanomastoid paragangliomas managed between 1988 and 2013 were reviewed. The clinical features, audiological data, pre- and postoperative notes were noted. The tumors were staged according to the modified Fish and Mattox classification. The surgical approaches for all patients were formulated according to the surgical algorithm developed at our center. RESULTS: 34 (23.5%), 46 (31.7%), 22 (15.2%), 18 (12.4%) and 25 (17.2%) patients were diagnosed to have TMP class A1, A2, B1, B2 and B3 tumors respectively. Gross tumor resection was achieved in 141 (97.2%) patients. The facial nerve was uncovered in four patients and infiltrated in three. The cochlea was found eroded in seven cases. The mean follow-up was 48.4 months. Recurrence was seen in one patient (0.7%). In the cases where the facial nerve was preserved (n=143), the nerve function was graded as HB grade 1 in 138 patients (97%). Postoperatively, the mean AC showed an improvement in all categories except in class B2 and B3, which corresponds to the classes that include patients who underwent subtotal petrosectomy. CONCLUSION: We report the long term surgical outcomes in tympanomastoid paragangliomas in the largest series published till date. It is possible to completely eradicate all types of tympanomastoid paragangliomas with minimum sequelae by choosing the correct surgical approach to achieve adequate exposure for individual tumor classes as described in our classification and algorithm. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: IIb.

RESUMO

This work deals with the design of an interactive monitoring tool for home-based physical rehabilitation. The software platform includes a video processing stage and the exercise performance evaluation. Image features are extracted by a Kinect v2 sensor and elaborated to return the exercises score. Furthermore the tool provides to physiotherapists a quantitative exercise evaluation of subject's performances. The proposed tool for home rehabilitation has been tested on 5 subjects and 5 different exercises and results are presented. In particular both exercises and relative evaluation indexes were selected by specialists in neurorehabilitation.

RESUMO

The bulk synthesis of freestanding carbon nanotube (CNT) frameworks is developed through a sulfur-addition strategy during an ambient-pressure chemical vapour deposition process, with ferrocene used as the catalyst precursor. This approach enhances the CNTs' length and contorted morphology, which are the key features leading to the formation of the synthesized porous networks. We demonstrate that such a three-dimensional structure selectively uptakes from water a mass of toxic organic solvent (i.e. o-dichlorobenzene) about 3.5 times higher than that absorbed by individual CNTs. In addition, owing to the presence of highly defective nanostructures constituting them, our samples exhibit an oil-absorption capacity higher than that reported in the literature for similar CNT sponges.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinitis with inferior turbinate hypertrophy is the most common cause of chronic nasal obstruction. Pharmacological treatment, mainly consisting of corticosteroids, is largely inadequate and, therefore, in the last few years several surgical techniques have been proposed (emptying, radiofrequency, cryotherapy, etc...). The aim of our work is to demonstrate that surgical removal of the inferior turbinate mucosa with the microdebrider, along with the submucosal chorion, results in a full restoration of mucosal physiological structure and function. METHODOLOGY: Thirteen symptomatic adult patients were subjected to bilateral inferior partial turbinoplasty with the microdebrider. All patients underwent endoscopic examination, functional nasal tests and nasal mucosa biopsy before and after surgery. RESULTS: The sensitivity in open airspaces improved after nasal surgery, and the results of functional tests returned to within a normal range. SEM examination confirmed that complete mucosal regeneration was within 4 months. CONCLUSION: Total removal of the inferior turbinate mucosa with the microdebrider in patients suffering from hypertrophic chronic rhinitis allows the perfect regeneration of physiological respiratory tissue and doesn`t have a negative impact on healing time and offsets any adverse postoperative event.

RESUMO

The main problem arising from tinnitus is the disturbance it causes in day-to-day life and disturbance in sleep leading to fatigue and general discomfort. We attempted to study the effect of melatonin in conjunction with Sulodexide as a treatment method for tinnitus and evaluate its effectiveness. We studied 102 patients suffering from tinnitus with a Prospective Randomised Controlled Study conducted in a tertiary care ENT department. After randomisation, 34 patients were treated with melatonin and Sulodexide, another 34 were treated with melatonin alone, and the remaining 34 (control group) were managed without therapy in order to evaluate spontaneous variations in quality of tinnitus. Patients were assessed prospectively with Tinnitus Handicap Inventory and Acufenometry both pre-treatment and post-treatment. Among the patients we studied, we found better results with both Tinnitus Handicap Inventory and Acufenometry in the group who received melatonin and Sulodexide as against melatonin alone. Any improvement was noted in the control group. In conclusion, our opinion is that melatonin in combination with Sulodexide is a viable treatment option for patients suffering from central or sensorineural tinnitus.

RESUMO

The magnetic properties of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles dispersed in a silica matrix in samples with different concentrations (5 and 10 wt% CoFe2O 4) and same particle size (3 nm) were studied by magnetization, DC and AC susceptibility, and Mossbauer spectroscopy measurements. The results indicate that the particles are very weakly interacting. The magnetic properties (saturation magnetization, anisotropy constant, and spin-canting) are discussed in relation to the cation distribution.
