RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study will guide health services by identifying the mental, physical, and social conditions associated with children's quality of life to better understand the experiences of pediatric kidney transplant recipients and help them lead better lives in adulthood. Encouragement to express their experiences with their own words and drawings can help to improve care practices and better understand their perspectives. Our aim was to determine the experiences and problems of pediatric kidney transplant recipients through Mandala art therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For this study, we adopted a descriptive phenomenological design and thematic analysis approach based on the philosophy of Edmund Husserl. The sample will consist of kidney transplant recipients aged 12 to 18 years admitted to the pediatric nephrology polyclinic of a university hospital in southern Turkey. Data will be collected using a semi-structured interview form. We will conduct each interview and Mandala drawing activity face-to-face. The study has been approved by the ethics committee of the university. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: This study, to our knowledge, is the first to focus on Mandala art therapy and the experiences of pediatric kidney transplant recipients and what it feels like to grow up with a new kidney. Our results will contribute to the literature and will help researchers understand what pediatric kidney transplant recipients are going through and what it means for them to live with a new kidney. Mandala art therapy can help pediatric kidney transplant recipients express their feelings and thoughts that they cannot otherwise express.

RESUMO

Moral distress causes frustration, guilt, anger, stress, sadness, anxiety, fear, burnout, insecurity, and depression in nurses, and this is reflected in their work performances. Therefore, internationally validated tools and methodological studies are needed to measure moral distress among nurses. This study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Moral Distress-Appraisal Scale (MD-APPS) among nurses in Turkey. Psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Moral Distress-Appraisal Scale (MD-APPS), which included internal consistency reliability and construct validity with factor analysis, were examined in a sample of 420 nurses working in different hospitals in Turkey completed the study between February and July 2022. The content validity index of the Turkish version of the MD-APPS based on expert opinions was 0.90. Through exploratory factor analysis for construct validity, a two-factor structure was obtained as in the original scale. The variance explained by these two factors was 56.67 %. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the scale was valid, while internal consistency coefficient and test-retest results demonstrated that the scale was reliable. The Turkish version of the MD-APPS is a valid and reliable tool for evaluating moral distress among nurses.

RESUMO

AIM: To examine the relationship between professional values, ethical sensitivity and caring behaviors among nursing students and determine whether professional values play a moderator role in the relationship between ethical sensitivity and caring behaviors among nursing students. BACKGROUND: Developing professional nursing values, ethical sensitivity and caring behaviors is critical in nursing programs from the first year to graduation to prepare students for increasingly complex and diverse work environments. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study using structural equation modeling. The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology checklist was used. METHODS: This study was conducted with 189 undergraduate nursing students. The study was conducted in a four-year nursing faculty in the Mediterranean region of Turkey from February to June 2022. Data were collected using a personal information form, the Nurses' Professional Values Scale, the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire and the Caring Behaviors Assessment Tool Nursing Version-Short Form. RESULTS: We found that nursing students' perceptions of professional values and caring behaviors were high and their ethical sensitivity was moderate. Nursing students who are successful in high school have higher professional values. In addition, it was determined that nursing students who chose the nursing profession because of altruism had higher perceptions of caring behaviors. A positive relationship exists between professional values, ethical sensitivity (r = -0.258, p < 0.001) and caring behaviors (r = 0.431, p < 0.001) (p < 0.05). Professional values have a positive effect on ethical sensitivity and caring behaviors. CONCLUSION: Professional values, ethical sensitivity and caring behaviors are relationships and professional values positively predict nursing students' ethical sensitivities and caring behaviors. As the professional value perceptions of nursing students increase, their ethical sensitivity and caring behaviors increase. Improving the curricula in a way that will improve professional values may enable nursing students to increase their ethical sensitivity and caring behaviors. The research contributes to a broader understanding of nursing education curriculum content.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Anxiety experienced by parents is an important predictor of anxiety experienced by children. Different interventions are used to reduce the anxiety levels of children and their parents during the preoperative period. Apart from conventional training methods, watching videos about real-life operating rooms can reduce parents' and their children's anxiety levels. Children scheduled for surgery are likely to experience less anxiety if their parents experience less anxiety. A video-assisted operating room promotion program will develop for parents. This study will be aimed to evaluate the effect of the program on the anxiety levels of parents and children. DESIGN AND METHODS: This study protocol is a single-center, single-blind, pre-test, post-test, follow-up parallel group randomized controlled trial. This study protocol was prepared with the Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials guidelines and will adhere to the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials Non-Pharmacologic Treatment Interventions checklist. A total of 100 eligible participants will be randomized into intervention and control groups. The intervention group will attend the program and receive standard care. CONCLUSION: If we obtain the expected results, we think that they will help healthcare professionals develop methods and strategies to reduce the anxiety levels of parents and children through content covering the pre-, peri-, and post-surgical processes. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: The results will assist healthcare professionals in the management of pain and guide them in developing technology-based nursing interventions. Trial registration It was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov in January 2022 (NCT05186766).

RESUMO

AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of music intervention on breast milk production in breastfeeding mothers. DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials following Cochrane methods were conducted. DATA SOURCES: We performed a literature search in Web of Science, Science Direct, PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, the Networked Digital Library of Theses & Dissertations, Ovid and ProQuest without year limitation. The review period covered January 1978-March 2020. REVIEW METHODS: Two independent researchers screened the literature using specific keywords and selected randomized controlled trials based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria according to the PICOS criteria. RESULT: Of 2,081 randomized controlled trials, 5 were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The total sample of the five trials was 554 participants. Active and passive music lasting 11-60 min was played in 1-14 sessions. No publication bias was noted. Cochran's Q test results pointed to a low level of heterogeneity among the randomized controlled trials. Overall, the results showed that music intervention had a low and positive effect on breast milk production in breastfeeding mothers. CONCLUSION: A systematic review and meta-analysis conducted on five trials showed that music can be an effective way to increase breast milk production. IMPACT: This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the effect of music on breast milk production in breastfeeding mothers and found sound evidence supporting its positive effects. Nurses, academics, mothers, and their children and society can benefit from these results. Nurses who give counselling to breastfeeding mothers can use music intervention to help them increase breast milk production.
