PURPOSE: Isokinetic knee extensor strength is poorly evaluated in geriatric day hospitals (GDHs), despite its potential functional significance compared to grip strength. This study aimed to investigate age-related effects on absolute and relative isokinetic knee extensor peak torque (KEPT) data in community-dwelling older GDH patients. METHODS: A total of 472 French GDH patients (179 men and 293 women, aged 75-94 years) participated in this study. Absolute and relative KEPT were measured at six distinct angular velocities between 0.52 and 3.14 rad/s. In addition, comfortable gait speed and grip strength were assessed. Participants were stratified by sex and age using 5-year intervals. One-way ANOVAs were used to examine age-related effects on KEPT values. Multiple linear regression models were employed to investigate the associations between gait speed and both mean KEPT values and grip strength, with separate models conducted on absolute and relative values. RESULTS: The recruited GDH patients presented lower absolute and relative KEPT values in comparison with established reference values for healthy community-dwelling older individuals, with men being consistently stronger than women. Notably, there was a significant decline in both absolute and relative KEPT values beyond the age of 85 for both sexes. Importantly, the multiple linear regression analyses conducted revealed a significant positive relationship between gait speed and mean KEPT values, surpassing the association with grip strength. CONCLUSIONS: These findings underscore the clinical importance of assessing isokinetic knee extensor strength in community-dwelling older GDH patients, particularly for tailoring personalized physical activity interventions.

PURPOSE: Our study aimed to compare the immediate and prolonged effects of submaximal eccentric (ECC) and concentric (CON) fatiguing protocols on the etiology of hamstrings' motor performance fatigue. METHODS: On separate days, 16 males performed sets of 5 unilateral ECC or CON hamstrings' contractions at 80% of their 1 Repetition Maximum (1 RM) until a 20% decrement in maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) torque was reached. Electrical stimulations were delivered during and after MVCs at several time points: before, throughout, immediately after (POST) and 24 h (POST 24) after the exercise. Potentiated twitch torques (T100 and T10, respectively) were recorded in response to high and low frequency paired electrical stimulations, and hamstrings' voluntary activation (VA) level was determined using the interpolated twitch technique. For statistical analysis, all indices of hamstrings' motor performance fatigue were expressed as a percentage of their respective baseline value. RESULTS: At POST, T100 (ECC: -13.3%; CON: -9.7%; p < 0.001), T10 (ECC: -5.1%; CON: -11.8%; p < 0.05) and hamstrings' VA level (ECC: -3.0%; CON: -2.4%; p < 0.001) were significantly reduced from baseline, without statistical differences between fatigue conditions. At POST24, all indices of hamstrings' motor performance fatigue returned to their baseline values. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that the contribution of muscular and neural mechanisms in hamstrings' motor performance fatigue may not depend on contraction type. This may have implications for practitioners, as ECC and CON strengthening could be similarly effective to improve hamstrings' fatigue resistance.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the care of patients with bladder cancer in a tertiary oncology center. MATERIALS AND METHOD: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients admitted to a tertiary cancer center for the treatment of bladder cancer between 2019 and 2022. Surgical volumes, patient demographics, clinical characteristics, and postoperative outcomes were compared across these years. RESULTS: A total of 463 patients with bladder cancer were admitted in the period, and 78 patients underwent radical cystectomy . The distribution of TMN stages between admitted patients remained consistent across the years, with no statistically significant differences. Patients who underwent RC in 2020 presented more advanced disease at surgery (pT3/pT4 stage) (P = .045; 95% CI, 0.18-0.55) and had a longer hospital stay compared to other years (P = .024; 95% CI, 10.26-41.27). CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges for the treatment of patients with bladder cancer. These results highlight the need to adapt health systems to unforeseen challenges, emphasizing the clinical impact on patients with advanced stages of the disease and the repercussions on their overall survival.

INTRODUCTION: Lung cancer in never-smoker (LCINS) patients accounts for 20% of lung cancer cases, and its biology remains poorly understood, particularly in genetically admixed populations. We elucidated the molecular profile of driver genes in Brazilian LCINS. METHODS: The mutational and gene fusion status of 119 lung adenocarcinomas from self-reported never-smoker patients, was assessed using targeted sequencing (NGS), nCounter, and immunohistochemistry. A panel of 46 ancestry-informative markers determined patients' genetic ancestry. RESULTS: The most frequently mutated gene was EGFR (49.6%), followed by TP53 (39.5%), ALK (12.6%), ERBB2 (7.6%), KRAS (5.9%), PIK3CA (1.7%), and less than 1% alterations in RET, NTRK1, MET∆ex14, PDGFRA, and BRAF. Except for TP53 and PIK3CA, all other alterations were mutually exclusive. Genetic ancestry analysis revealed a predominance of European (71.1%), and a higher African ancestry was associated with TP53 mutations. CONCLUSION: Brazilian LCINS exhibited a similar molecular profile to other populations, except the increased ALK and TP53 alterations. Importantly, 73% of these patients have actionable alterations that are suitable for targeted treatments.

OBJECTIVE: To validate the Cancer of the Bladder Risk Assessment (COBRA) score in patients with urothelial variants. METHODS: Epidemiological, clinical, radiological, and anatomopathological data were collected from patients with urothelial carcinoma who underwent radical cystectomy at the Institute of Cancer of São Paulo between May 2008 and December 2022. Patients with the presence of at least 10% of any urothelial variants in the radical cystectomy specimens' anatomopathological exam were included in the study. The COBRA score and derivatives were applied and correlated with oncological outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 680 patients [482 men (70.9%) and 198 women (29.1%)]; 66 years (IQR 59-73) underwent radical cystectomy for bladder tumor, and of these patients, a total of 167 patients presented any type of urothelial variant. The median follow-up time was 28.77 months (IQR 12-85). The three most prevalent UV were squamous differentiation (50.8%), glandular differentiation (31.3%), and micropapillary differentiation (11.3%). The subtypes with the worst prognosis were sarcomatoid with a median survival of 8 months (HR 1.161; 95% CI 0.555-2.432) and plasmacytoid with 14 months (HR 1.466; 95% CI 0.528-4.070). The COBRA score for patients with micropapillary variants demonstrated good predictive accuracy for OS (log-rank P = 0.009; 95% IC 6.78-29.21) and CSS (log-rank P = 0.002; 95% IC 13.06-26.93). CONCLUSIONS: In our study, the COBRA score proved an effective risk stratification tool for urothelial histological variants, especially for the micropapillary urothelial variant. It may be helpful in the prognosis evaluation of UV patients after radical cystectomy.

The presence of emerging contaminants in wastewater poses a global environmental challenge, requiring the development of innovative materials or methods for their treatment. This study focused on the production of green functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and using them in the adsorption of the pharmaceuticals Losartan (LOS) and Diclofenac (DIC). The efficiency of the methodology was verified by characterization techniques. Elemental composition analysis indicated a significant increase in the iron content after the green functionalization, proving the effectiveness of the method. Thermogravimetric analysis showed similar thermal degradation profiles for pristine CNTs and functionalized CNTs, indicating better post-functionalization thermal stability. BET analysis revealed mesoporous characteristics of CNTs, with increased surface area and pore volumes after functionalization. X-Ray diffraction confirmed the preservation of the lattice structure of the CNTs post-functionalization and post-adsorption, with changes in peak broadening suggesting surface modifications. LOS and DIC adsorption were evaluated via kinetic studies at four different concentrations (0.1-0.4 mmol/L) that were best represented by the pseudo-second order model, suggesting chemisorption mechanisms, with faster and higher uptakes for DIC (0.084-0.261 mmol/g; teq = 5 min) when compared to LOS (0.058-0.235 mmol/g; teq = 20 min). The curves were also studied via artificial neural networks (ANN) and revealed that the best ANN architecture for representing the experimental data is a network with [3 5 5 2] neurons trained using the Bayesian-Regularization algorithm and the Log-sigmoid (hidden layers) and Linear (output layer) transfer functions. The desorption study showed that CaCl2 had better performance in CNT regeneration, reaching its removal capacity above 50% up to 3 cycles, for both pharmaceuticals. These findings reveal the potential of the developed material as a promising adsorbent for targeted removal of pollutants, contributing to advances in the remediation of emerging contaminants and the application of artificial intelligence in adsorption research.

After a unilateral muscle exercise, the performance of the non-exercised contralateral limb muscle can be also impaired. This crossover fatigue phenomenon is still debated in the literature and very few studies have investigated the influence of eccentric contractions. This study was designed to assess neuromuscular adaptations involved in the crossover fatigue of the non-exercised contralateral knee flexor muscles. Seventeen healthy young men performed a unilateral submaximal eccentric exercise of the right knee flexors until a 20% reduction in maximal voluntary isometric contraction torque was attained in the exercised limb. Before (PRE), immediately after exercise cessation (POST) and 24 hours later (POST24), neuromuscular function and perceived muscle soreness were measured in both the exercised limb and non-exercised limb. In addition, global perceived fatigue was assessed at each measurement time. At POST, significant reductions in maximal voluntary isometric contraction were observed in the exercised limb (-28.1%, p < 0.001) and in the non-exercised limb (-8.5%, p < 0.05), evidencing crossover fatigue. At POST, voluntary activation decreased in the exercised limb only (-6.0%, p < 0.001), while electrically evoked potentiated doublet torque was impaired in both the exercised limb and the non-exercised limb (-11.6%, p = 0.001). In addition, global perceived fatigue significantly increased at POST (p < 0.001). At POST24, all measured variables returned to PRE values, except for perceived muscle soreness scores exhibiting greater values than PRE (p < 0.05). A possible cumulative interaction between peripheral alterations and global perceived fatigue may account for the immediate crossover fatigue observed in the non-exercised limb.

The eyeworms of the subgenus Thelaziella infect orbital cavities, conjunctival sacs and lachrymal ducts of many wild birds, being able to cause conjunctivitis. In Brazil, at least 10 species of Thelaziella have been described. Here we present a brief review of cases of Thelazia (Thelaziella) aquilina and describe the infection of this parasite in Harpia harpyja, as a new host record. Two nematodes were collected from the surface of the cornea of an adult female H. harpyja in the Amazon region (Brazil) and were morphologically identified as two males of T. (T.) aquilina. This data demonstrated the need for further studies focused on elucidating the transmission, biological cycle, and phylogenetic positioning of Thelaziella as subgenus.

NTRK1, 2, and 3 fusions are important therapeutic targets for NSCLC patients, but their prevalence in South American admixed populations needs to be better explored. NTRK fusion detection in small biopsies is a challenge, and distinct methodologies are used, such as RNA-based next-generation sequencing (NGS), immunohistochemistry, and RNA-based nCounter. This study aimed to evaluate the frequency and concordance of positive samples for NTRK fusions using a custom nCounter assay in a real-world scenario of a single institution in Brazil. Out of 147 NSCLC patients, 12 (8.2%) cases depicted pan-NTRK positivity by IHC. Due to the absence of biological material, RNA-based NGS and/or nCounter could be performed in six of the 12 IHC-positive cases (50%). We found one case exhibiting an NTRK1 fusion and another an NTRK3 gene fusion by both RNA-based NGS and nCounter techniques. Both NTRK fusions were detected in patients diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, with no history of tobacco consumption. Moreover, no concomitant EGFR, KRAS, and ALK gene alterations were detected in NTRK-positive patients. The concordance rate between IHC and RNA-based NGS was 33.4%, and between immunohistochemistry and nCounter was 40%. Our findings indicate that NTRK fusions in Brazilian NSCLC patients are relatively rare (1.3%), and RNA-based nCounter methodology is a suitable approach for NRTK fusion identification in small biopsies.

The most common alternative for the management and valorization of rice processing waste is the combustion of rice husk (RH) for energy generation. The environmental risk assessment of the ash generated during the combustion of the RH to obtain energy has remained understudied. Disposal of rice husk ash (RHA) on agricultural land is the most common outcome, which could pose a risk to both natural ecosystems and human health. The objective of this study was to characterize the physicochemical composition and the phytotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and genotoxicity of RHA obtained from three distinct combustion processes. The evaluation processes were 800-900 °C in up to 5 min (I), 800-900 °C in 15-20 min (II), and 600-700 °C in 15-20 min (III). Furthermore, the content, pH, and concentrations of Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, and Ti present in the ashes were determined. The germination index for two vegetable seeds was subsequently evaluated. By measuring the mitotic index and frequency of chromosomal aberrations, the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity were determined. It was observed that RHA produced by combustion of RH at higher combustion temperatures for an extended period exhibited different physicochemical properties, in addition to higher levels of phytotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and genotoxicity.

Microcapsules of ciriguela peel extracts obtained by ultrasound-assisted extraction were prepared by spray drying, whose results were compared with those of freeze-drying as a control. The effects of spray-drying air temperature, feed flow rate and ratio of encapsulating agents (maltodextrin and arabic gum) were studied. Encapsulation efficiency, moisture content, total phenolic compounds (TPC), water activity, hygroscopicity, solubility, colorimetric parameters, phenolic profile by HPLC/DAD, simulated gastrointestinal digestion and morphology of spray-dried and freeze-dried microcapsules were evaluated, as well as their stability of TPC during 90 days storage at 7 and 25 °C. Spray-dried extract showed higher encapsulation efficiency (98.83%) and TPC (476.82 mg GAE g-1) than freeze-dried extract. The most abundant compounds in the liquid extract of ciriguela peel flour were rutin, epicatechin gallate, chlorogenic acid and quercetin. Rutin and myricetin were the major flavonoids in the spray-dried extract, while quercetin and kaempferol were in the freeze-dried one. The simulated gastrointestinal digestion test of microencapsulated extracts revealed the highest TPC contents after the gastric phase and the lowest one after the intestinal one. Rutin was the most abundant compound after the digestion of both spray-dried (68.74 µg g-1) and freeze-dried (93.98 µg g-1) extracts. Spray-dried microcapsules were of spherical shape, freeze-dried products of irregular structures. Spray-dried microcapsules had higher phenolic compounds contents after 90 days of storage at 7 °C compared to those stored at 25 °C, while the lyophilized ones showed no significant difference between the two storage temperatures. The ciriguela agro-industrial residue can be considered an interesting alternative source of phenolic compounds that could be used, in the form of bioactive compounds-rich powders, as an ingredient in pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries.

This study assessed the immediate and prolonged effects of eccentric-induced fatigue on position sense, utilizing position-pointing tasks, which had not been previously implemented for this purpose. Fifteen healthy adults underwent a fatiguing eccentric protocol that entailed sets of unilateral submaximal contractions of knee flexor muscles until reaching a 20% decrease in maximal isometric torque production. Evaluations of knee flexor neuromuscular function as well as position-pointing tasks at 40° and 70° of knee flexion were conducted prior to the fatiguing eccentric protocol, immediately after (POST), and 24 h after (POST24) exercise termination. To assess neuromuscular fatigue etiology, electrical myostimulations were administered during and after maximal voluntary isometric contractions. At POST, the voluntary activation level and evoked potentiated doublet amplitude at 100 Hz were significantly reduced. In addition, position-pointing errors exhibited a significant increase at POST regardless of the tested angle, with participants positioning the pointer in a more extended position compared to their hidden exercised limb. At POST24, neuromuscular function and position sense parameters had reverted to their baseline levels. The findings of this experiment demonstrate that position-pointing accuracy was impaired immediately after the fatiguing eccentric protocol, manifesting in the presence of both central and peripheral fatigue. As position-pointing accuracy relies heavily on extrapersonal representation of the body at the brain level, acute changes in exercised limb's extrapersonal representation might have resulted from central fatigue-related mechanisms altering the cognitive processes responsible for converting kinesthetic signals into extrapersonal coordinates.

This study investigates the role of eugenol (EUG) on CS-induced acute lung injury (ALI) and how this compound is able to modulate macrophage activity. C57BL/6 mice were exposed to 12 cigarettes/day/5days and treated 15 min/day/5days with EUG. Rat alveolar macrophages (RAMs) were exposed to CSE (5%) and treated with EUG. In vivo, EUG reduced morphological changes inflammatory cells, oxidative stress markers, while, in vitro, it induced balance in the oxidative stress and reduced the pro-inflammatory cytokine release while increasing the anti-inflammatory one. These results suggest that eugenol reduced CS-induced ALI and acted as a modulator of macrophage activity.

Whole-body vibration (WBV) training programs were reported to improve knee extensor muscle (KE) strength in healthy participants. Unfortunately, the underlying mechanisms of these strength gains remain unresolved. In addition, WBV training was shown to increase the time-to-exhaustion of a static submaximal endurance task. However, the effects of WBV training on neuromuscular fatigue (i.e., a decrease of the maximal voluntary isometric contraction; MVIC) induced by an endurance task is unknown. We, therefore, investigated the influence of WBV training on (i) KE MVIC and neuromuscular function, (ii) the time-to-exhaustion of the KE associated with a submaximal isometric fatiguing exercise, and (iii) KE neuromuscular fatigue and its etiology. Eighteen physically active males were assigned to a WBV group (n = 10) or a sham training group (SHAM; n = 8). The MVIC of the KE, voluntary activation, and electrically evoked responses of the KE were assessed (i) before and after a fatiguing exercise (i.e., submaximal isometric contraction) performed until failure, and (ii) before (PRE) and after a 6-week training (POST) period. At POST, the WBV training increased the KE MVIC (+12%, p = 0.001) and voluntary activation (+6%, p < 0.05) regardless of the fatiguing exercise. The time-to-exhaustion was also lengthened at POST in the WBV group (+34%, p < 0.001). Finally, the relative percentage of MVIC decrease after fatiguing exercises diminished in the WBV group between PRE and POST (-14% vs. -6%, respectively, p < 0.001). Significant neural adaptation enhancements account for the trend in KE strength improvements observed after the WBV training program. In addition, the WBV training was effective at increasing the time-to-exhaustion and attenuating neuromuscular fatigue.

Some extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli isolates (ExPEC), obtained from humans and chickens avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC), share similar virulence genes. Thus, products of avian origin can be a source of human infection. Moreover, these APEC isolates are resistant to antimicrobials and can spread in the environment through the chicken feces. Although the development of multidrug-resistant (MDR) microorganisms in poultry is on the rise, healthcare entities have raised concerns since MDRs can horizontally transfer resistance genes to other microorganisms and complicate the management of human infections by MDR APEC. The results of our study showed that of 80 investigated spiced chicken meat samples, 55% were contaminated with E. coli, of which 34% (15/44) contaminate with APEC. No diarrheagenic E. coli (DEC) pathotypes were found. Twenty-six isolates were MDR E. coli. Among the APEC isolates, 87% (13/15) produced extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL). The emergence of MDR/ESBL-producing APEC with zoonotic potential for humans is extremely worrying. Therefore, further studies are required to identify the prevalence of MDR/ESBL-producing APEC in the entire chicken production chain from creation, slaughter, processing, and butchery.

PURPOSE: This study examined eccentric-induced fatigue effects on knee flexor (KF) neuromuscular function and on knee position sense. This design was repeated across two experimental sessions performed 1 week apart to investigate potential repeated bout effects. METHODS: Sixteen participants performed two submaximal bouts of KF unilateral eccentric contractions until reaching a 20% decrease in maximal voluntary isometric contraction force. Knee position sense was evaluated with position-matching tasks in seated and prone positions at 40° and 70° of knee flexion so that KF were either antagonistic or agonistic during the positioning movement. The twitch interpolation technique was used to assess KF neuromuscular fatigue. Perceived muscle soreness was also assessed. Measurements were performed before, immediately (POST) and 24 h after (POST24) each eccentric bout. RESULTS: No repeated bout effect on neuromuscular function and proprioceptive parameters was observed. At POST, central and peripheral factors contributed to the force decrement as shown by significant decreases in voluntary activation level (- 3.8 ± 4.8%, p < 0.01) and potentiated doublet torque at 100 Hz (- 10 ± 15.8%, p < 0.01). At this time point, position-matching errors significantly increased by 1.7 ± 1.9° in seated position at 40° (p < 0.01). At POST24, in presence of muscle soreness (p < 0.05), although KF neuromuscular function had recovered, position-matching errors increased by 0.6 ± 2.6° in prone position at 40° (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: These results provide evidence that eccentric-induced position sense alterations may arise from central and/or peripheral mechanisms depending on the testing position.

Ketoconazole (KTZ), a broad-spectrum fungicidal drug, has been a significant problem in recent decades due to its toxic action on non-target aquatic organisms. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate determine the effects that environmental relevant concentration of the commercial formulation of KTZ can exert on benthic macroinvertebrates, more specifically on larvae of the insect Chironomus sancticaroli. Acute toxicity tests with KTZ indicated lethal concentration (LC50) of 9.9 µg/L. Analyses of prolonged exposure to KTZ (chronic toxicity) indicated an increase in the rate of mentum deformity by approximately 3 times at concentrations of 0.6 and 2.4 µg/L. All biomarkers analyzed showed an increase after exposure to KTZ (0.6 and 2.4 µg/L), with average values of 115 % for superoxide dismutase (SOD), 63 % for catalase (CAT), 111 % for glutathione S-transferase (GST) and 59 % for malonaldehyde (MDA) in C. sancticaroli larvae. Thus, the toxic effects on survival, development (length and weight), mentum and redox responses caused by commercial KTZ in low concentrations were observed on C. sancticaroli larvae. In addition, the results suggest that biochemical biomarkers can be used for studies involving environmental disturbances.

During the first semester of 2021, all of Brazil has suffered an intense wave of COVID-19 associated with the Gamma variant. In July, the first cases of Delta variant were detected in the state of Rio de Janeiro. In this work, we have employed phylodynamic methods to analyse more than 1 600 genomic sequences of Delta variant collected until September in Rio de Janeiro to reconstruct how this variant has surpassed Gamma and dispersed throughout the state. After the introduction of Delta, it has initially spread mostly in the homonymous city of Rio de Janeiro, the most populous of the state. In a second stage, dispersal occurred to mid- and long-range cities, which acted as new close-range hubs for spread. We observed that the substitution of Gamma by Delta was possibly caused by its higher viral load, a proxy for transmissibility. This variant turnover prompted a new surge in cases, but with lower lethality than was observed during the peak caused by Gamma. We reason that high vaccination rates in the state of Rio de Janeiro were possibly what prevented a higher number of deaths.

BACKGROUND: Targeted and immunotherapies are currently moving toward early-stage settings for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Predictive biomarkers data are scarce in this scenario. We aimed to describe the frequency of EGFR mutations and PD-L1 expression levels in early-stage non-squamous patients with NSCLC from a large, single Brazilian oncology center. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated patients with NSCLC diagnosed at an early-stage (IB to IIIA-AJCC seventh edition) at Barretos Cancer Hospital (n = 302). EGFR mutational status was assessed in FFPE tumor tissues using distinct methodologies (NGS, Cobas, or Sanger sequencing). PD-L1 expression was evaluated by immunohistochemistry (clone 22C3) and reported as Tumor Proportion Score (TPS), categorized as <1%, 1-49%, and ≥50%. We evaluated the association between EGFR mutational status and PD-L1 expression with sociodemographic and clinicopathological parameters by Fisher's test, qui-square test, and logistic regression. Survival analysis was assessed by the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression model. RESULTS: EGFR mutations were detected in 17.3% (n = 48) of cases and were associated with female sex, never smokers, and longer overall and event-free survival. PD-L1 positivity was observed in 36.7% (n = 69) of cases [TPS 1-49% n = 44(23.4%); TPS ≥50% n = 25(13.3%)]. PD-L1 positivity was associated with smoking, weight loss, and higher disease stages (IIB/IIIA). CONCLUSION: The frequencies of EGFR mutations and PD-L1 positivity were described for early-stage non-squamous patients with NSCLC. These results will be essential for guiding treatment strategies with the recent approvals of osimertinib and immunotherapy in the adjuvant setting.

Imidacloprid (IMI) is a neonicotinoid insecticide widely used in agriculture worldwide. This pesticide has been found in freshwater ecosystems, including Brazilian freshwaters. For this reason, studies are being conducted to detect the presence of IMI in freshwater and understand its effects on the aquatic biota. In the present study, the acute toxic effect of the imidacloprid commercial formulation (ICF) Galeão® on the Brazilian non-target aquatic organisms Chironomus sancticaroli and Poecilia reticulata was evaluated. Enzymatic activities (glutathione S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX)) were also determined. Moreover, we considered 11 studies that detected IMI concentrations up to 3.65 µg.L-1 in 28 different Brazilian freshwaters to evaluate the acute ecological risk of IMI in these environments. From the ecotoxicological assays, we determined the LC50 values for C. sancticaroli (LC50-48 h 1.52 µg.L-1) and P. reticulata (LC50-96 h 122.65 mg.L-1). The high sensitivity of C. sancticaroli demonstrates that this species could be used as a bioindicator in studies investigating the contamination of freshwater by IMI. Enzymatic activity changes were observed in both organisms and offered sublethal responses to the effects of the pollution by IMI on aquatic biota. Our results suggest that the presence of IMI in Brazilian aquatic ecosystems can represent a potential ecological risk for the aquatic insect populations and, consequently, cause an imbalance in these ecosystems. The present study provides relevant and comparable toxicity information that may be useful to develop public policies to protect the Brazilian aquatic ecosystem from IMI contamination.
