RESUMO

In a single-component superfluid under rotation a broken symmetry in the order parameter space results in a broken translational symmetry in real space: a vortex lattice. If translational symmetry is restored, the phase of the order parameter disorders and thus the broken symmetry in the order parameter space is also restored. We show that for Bose-Einstein condensate mixtures in optical lattices with negative dissipationless drag, a new situation arises. This state is a modulated vortex liquid which breaks translational symmetry in the direction transverse to the rotation vector.

RESUMO

Current psychoanalytic scholarship concerning gender development rejects recognition of the genital difference, or "penis envy," as central to the construction of "femininity," substituting the concept of "primary femininity." This shift in the paradigm of gender construction has occurred in part because of contributions from child-observational research showing that "gender identity" is acquired by age three. It has also been stimulated by the observations of adult analysts that interpretations organized around the concept of penis envy appear to have little mutative value in contrast to the communications in play and action from the analyses of preschool girls, which seem to reflect intense intrapsychic conflict stimulated by the girls' recognition of the genital difference. Using clinical material, this paper contrasts fantasies of gender found in oedipal girls with those presented in the analyses of adult women. The differences reflect not only the vicissitudes of gender construction and developmental changes in the mind's capacity to adapt to the demands of reality but also the fate of aggressive and narcissistic derivatives as they become entangled in conflict created by recognition of the inherent limitations of the body. The fantasies referred to by the concept "penis envy" are not constitutive of femininity; however, they reflect one approach to a defensive solution to intrapsychic dilemmas stemming from awareness of bodily and generational limits.

RESUMO

This paper explores the transformations of the girl's intrapsychic relationship to the mental representations of her mother and their contribution to mastery of the specifically female developmental milestones during adolescence and early adulthood. The vicissitudes of the girl's intrapsychic organization of the mental representations to the maternal object both reflect and characterize the psychological tasks of female adolescence: puberty, menarche, sexuality, and psychological independence. It is argued that the characteristic fantasies of this period can be understood not only as representing an intrapsychic developmental progression along object lines but as complex compromise formations which serve multiple structural functions as well. Clinical material is presented to illustrate typical fantasies of female adolescence.

RESUMO

This paper presents clinical material from the psychoanalysis of a 12-year-old girl whose parents had divorced several years earlier. Material drawn from her analysis permits us to examine the question: given the intrapsychic demands of the prepubertal period, how was the experience of divorce registered, what aspects of intrapsychic functioning became distorted, and what, if any, remained uncontaminated? The impact of the parental divorce lay in an intensification and entrenchment of characteristic latency defenses which, as puberty approached, contributed to heightened internal conflict and an insistent turn to reality as both explanation for and solution of intrapsychic conflict.
