RESUMO

Objective: To investigate parental knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) toward adolescent depression. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between October 2022 and October 2023 at The First Affiliated Hospital of Ningbo University among parents of adolescents diagnosed with depression. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the parents' demographic characteristics and KAP toward adolescent depression. Results: A total of 522 questionnaires were collected from parents of depressed adolescents. Among the participants, 383 (73.37%) were female. In addition, 426 participants (81.61%) had children aged 14-18. The mean knowledge, attitude, and practice scores were 9.09 ± 2.37 (possible range: 0-12), 37.04 ± 4.11 (possible range: 11-55), and 31.53 ± 3.84 (possible range: 8-40), respectively. There were significant positive correlations between knowledge and attitude (r = 0.225, p < 0.001), knowledge and practice (r = 0.240, p < 0.001), and attitude and practice (r = 0.381, p < 0.001). The path analysis showed significant direct effects of knowledge on attitude (ß = 0.422, p < 0.001) and practice (ß = 0.283, p < 0.001). There was an indirect effect of knowledge on practice through attitude (ß = 0.131, p = 0.004). Attitude directly impacted practice (ß = 0.311, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Parents of adolescents diagnosed with depression exhibited moderate KAP regarding adolescent depression. The study underscored the importance of targeted interventions to improve parental KAP in supporting adolescents with depression. Moreover, future research should explore additional factors influencing parental attitudes and behaviors toward adolescent depression to develop more effective interventions.

BACKGROUND: To examine whether the clinical performance of predicting late age-related macular degeneration (AMD) development is improved through using multimodal imaging (MMI) compared to using colour fundus photography (CFP) alone, and how this compares with a basic prediction model using well-established AMD risk factors. METHODS: Individuals with AMD in this study underwent MMI, including optical coherence tomography (OCT), fundus autofluorescence, near-infrared reflectance and CFP at baseline, and then at 6-monthly intervals for 3-years to determine MMI-defined late AMD development. Four retinal specialists independently assessed the likelihood that each eye at baseline would progress to MMI-defined late AMD over 3-years with CFP, and then with MMI. Predictive performance with CFP and MMI were compared to each other, and to a basic prediction model using age, presence of pigmentary abnormalities, and OCT-based drusen volume. RESULTS: The predictive performance of the clinicians using CFP [AUC = 0.75; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.68-0.82] improved when using MMI (AUC = 0.79; 95% CI = 0.72-0.85; p = 0.034). However, a basic prediction model outperformed clinicians using either CFP or MMI (AUC = 0.85; 95% CI = 0.78-91; p ≤ 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Clinical performance for predicting late AMD development was improved by using MMI compared to CFP. However, a basic prediction model using well-established AMD risk factors outperformed retinal specialists, suggesting that such a model could further improve personalised counselling and monitoring of individuals with the early stages of AMD in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: It is possible that this condition will lead to urosepsis and progressive deterioration of renal function in the absence of surgical intervention. Several recent clinical studies have shown that multi-tract percutaneous nephrolithotomy (M-PCNL) has a similar stone free rate (SFR) as standard percutaneous nephrolithotomy (S-PCNL). As a result, M-PCNL was also recommended as a treatment option for staghorn calculi. AIM: To examine the perioperative and long-term results of ultrasonography-guided single- and M-PCNL. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study. Between March 2021 and January 2022, the urology department of our hospital selected patients for the treatment of staghorn calculi using percutaneous nephrolithotomy. The primary outcomes were complication rate and SFR, and the characteristics of patients, operative parameters, laboratory measurements were also collected. RESULTS: In total, 345 patients were enrolled in the study (186 in the S-PCNL group and 159 in the M-PCNL group). The SFR in the M-PCNL group was significantly higher than that in the S-PCNL group (P = 0.033). Moreover, the incidence rates of hydrothorax (P = 0.03) and postoperative infection (P = 0.012) were higher in the M-PCNL group than in the S-PCNL group. Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that post-operative white blood cell count (OR = 2.57, 95%CI: 1.90-3.47, P < 0.001) and stone size (OR = 1.59, 95%CI: 1.27-2.00, P < 0.001) were associated with a higher overall complication rate in the S-PCNL group. Body mass index (OR = 1.22, 95%CI: 1.06-1.40, P = 0.004) and stone size (OR = 1.70, 95%CI: 1.35-2.15, P < 0.001) were associated with increased overall complications in the M-PCNL group. CONCLUSION: Multiple access tracts can facilitate higher SFR while slightly increasing the incidence of acceptable complications.

Background: Women's participation in the clinical oncology practice has increased over the past decade. There is a need to investigate whether women's participation in academia, as reflected by publication activity, increased over the time. This study aimed to investigate trends in female authorship in top journals of lung cancer in the past ten years. Methods: In this cross-sectional study of all original research and review articles published in lung cancer journals including New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet journals, JAMA journals, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Annals of Oncology, Cancer Discovery, Journal of Thoracic Oncology, and Translational Lung Cancer Research (TLCR) between 2012 and 2021, the sex composition of lead authors were analyzed. The sex of the author was confirmed by internet searching for photographs, biographies, and gender-specific pronouns from journal or personal websites. The time-trend of female authorship was determined using Join-Point Regression (JPR) analysis. Results: A total of 3,625 first authors and 3,612 corresponding authors were identified in the journals during the years studied. The sex of the author was revealed for 98.5%. Among 3,625 first authors with the sex being revealed, 1,224 (33.7%) were women. The proportion of female first authors increased remarkably from 29.4% in 2012 to 39.8% in 2021. The annual percentage change (APC) in female first authorship took place in 2019 [APC for 2019-2021, 37.03, 95% confidence interval (CI): 18.0-59.1, P=0.003]. The proportion of first authors in TLCR increased from 25.9% in 2012 to 42.8% in 2021 and showed the greatest rise in female first authorship. There were significant discrepancies in the female first authorship across the journals and regions. Among the 3,612 corresponding authors whose sex were determined, 884 (24.5%) were female. There is no significant increasing trend in female corresponding authorship. Conclusions: The sex gap in the first authorship of lung cancer research articles has improved markedly in the recent years, however, sex imparities persist especially in corresponding authorship. There is an urgent need to proactively support and promote women in taking the leadership roles, thereby increasing their contributions to and influence on the development or advancement for future healthcare policies and practices.

Among models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6), here we show that the magnitude of the tropical low cloud feedback, which contributes considerably to uncertainty in estimates of climate sensitivity, is intimately linked to tropical deep convection and its effects on the tropical atmospheric overturning circulation. First, a reduction in tropical ascent area and an increased frequency of heavy precipitation result in high cloud reduction and upper-tropospheric drying, which increases longwave cooling and reduces subsidence weakening, favoring low cloud reduction (Radiation-Subsidence Pathway). Second, increased longwave cooling decreases tropospheric stability, which also reduces subsidence weakening and low cloudiness (Stability-Subsidence Pathway). In summary, greater high cloud reduction and upper-tropospheric drying (negative longwave feedback) lead to a more positive cloud feedback among CMIP6 models by contributing to a greater reduction in low cloudiness (positive shortwave feedback). Varying strengths of the two pathways contribute considerably to the intermodel spread in climate sensitivity.

High-quality scientific research is very important in attempting to effectively control the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and ensure people's health and safety. Chloroquine (CQ) and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) have received much attention. This article comprehensively investigates the ethical review of off-label CQ and HCQ research during the COVID-19 pandemic with regard to strictly abiding by review standards, improving review efficiency, ensuring the rights and interests of subjects and that ethics committees conduct independent reviews, and achieving full ethics supervision of research conducted during an emergency. Research must be both rigorous and prudent to ensure the best outcome, with the maximization of benefits as the core principle. Standardization of the application, implementation and ethical review processes are needed to prevent unnecessary risk.

Increasing severity of drought stress due to global change and extreme weather has been affecting the biodiversity, function, and stability of forest ecosystems. However, despite being an important component in the alpine and subalpine vegetation in forest ecosystems, Rhododendron species have been paid rare attention in the study of molecular mechanism of tolerance or response to drought. Herein, we investigated the correlation of transcriptomic changes with the physiological and biochemical indicators of Rhododendron rex under drought stress by using the co-expression network approach and regression analysis. Compared with the control treatment, the number of significantly differentially expressed unigenes (DEGs) increased with the degree of drought stress. The DEGs were mainly enriched in the cell wall metabolic process, signaling pathways, sugar metabolism, and nitrogen metabolism. Coupled analysis of the transcriptome, physiological, and biochemical parameters indicated that the metabolic pathways were highly correlated with the physiological and biochemical indicators under drought stress, especially the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, such as the actual photosynthetic efficiency of photosystem II, electron transport rate, photochemical quenching coefficient, and the maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II photochemistry. The majority of the response genes related to the metabolic pathways, including photosynthesis, sugar metabolism, and phytohormone signal pathway, were highly expressed under drought stress. In addition, genes associated with cell wall, pectin, and galacturonan metabolism also played crucial roles in the response of R. rex to drought stress. The results provided novel insight into the molecular response of the alpine woody species under drought stress and may improve the understanding of the response of forest ecosystems to the global climate change.

This paper examines a longitudinal shape evolution model in which a three-dimensional volume progresses through a family of elastic equilibria in response to the time-derivative of an internal force, or yank, with an additional regularization to ensure diffeomorphic transformations. We consider two different models of yank and address the long time existence and uniqueness of solutions for the equations of motion in both models. In addition, we derive sufficient conditions for the existence of an optimal yank that best describes the change from an observed initial volume to an observed volume at a later time. The main motivation for this work is the understanding of processes such as growth and atrophy in anatomical structures, where the yank could be roughly interpreted as a metabolic event triggering morphological changes. We provide preliminary results on simple examples to illustrate, under this model, the retrievability of some attributes of such events.

INTRODUCTION: Electroacupuncture protects neurons and myelinated axons after spinal cord injury by mitigating the inflammatory response and oxidative stress, but how it exerts these effects is unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: Spinal cord injury was induced in C57BL/6 wild-type and apolipoprotein E (ApoE) knockout (ApoE-/- ) mice, followed by electroacupuncture or ApoE mimetic peptide COG112 treatment. Mice with spinal cord injury suffered loss of myelinated axons and hindlimb motor function through the detections of Basso mouse scale, histology, and transmission electron microscopy; electroacupuncture partially reversed these effects in wild-type mice but not in ApoE-/- mice. Combining exogenous ApoE administration with electroacupuncture significantly mitigated the effects of spinal cord injury in both mouse strains, and these effects were associated with up-regulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines and down-regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines which were detected by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Combination treatment also reduced oxidative stress by up-regulating ApoE and Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway through the detections of immunofluorescence and western blot analysis. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that electroacupuncture protects neurons and myelinated axons following spinal cord injury through an ApoE-dependent mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) during pregnancy is rare, especially in twin pregnancy, and it can endanger the lives of the mother and children. Except for conventional cardiovascular risk factors, pregnancy and assisted reproduction can increase the risk of AMI during pregnancy. AMI develops secondary to different etiologies, such as coronary spasm and spontaneous coronary artery dissection. CASE SUMMARY: A 33-year-old woman, with twin pregnancy in the 31st week of gestation, presented to the hospital with intermittent chest tightness for 12 wk, aggravation for 1 wk, and chest pain for 4 h. Combined with the electrocardiogram and hypersensitive troponin results, she was diagnosed with acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction. Although the patient had no related medical history, she presented several risk factors, such as age greater than 30 years, assisted reproduction, and hyperlipidemia. After diagnosis, the patient received antiplatelet and anticoagulant treatment. Cesarean section and coronary angiography performed 7 d later showed stenosis and thrombus shadow of the right coronary artery. After receiving medication, the patient was in good condition. CONCLUSION: This case suggests that, with the widespread use of assisted reproductive technology, more attention should be paid to perinatal healthcare, especially when chest pain occurs, to facilitate early diagnosis and intervention of AMI, and the etiology of AMI in pregnancy needs to be differentiated, especially between coronary spasm and spontaneous coronary artery dissection.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture(EA)on locomotor activity and the expression of high-mobility group box-1(HMGB1) and Toll-like receptor 4(TLR4) in mice with spinal cord injury(SCI), so as to explore its mechanisms underlying improvement of SCI at the acute stage. METHODS: Forty-eight female C57BL/6 mice were equally randomized into 3 groups: sham operation, model and EA. The SCI model was established by clamping the spinal cord with a serrefine after laminectomy at the 1st lumbar vertebra(L1). EA (1.5 Hz/7.5 Hz, 1.0 mA) was applied to "Jiaji"(EXH-B2) for 10 min, once a day for 5 and 14 days, separately. The hindlimb locomotor function was assessed by Basso, Beattie, Bresnahan Locomotor Rating Scale (BBB). Histopathological changes of the injured area of the spinal cord were determined by H.E. staining. The expression levels of spinal HMGB1, TLR4, ionized calcium binding adaptor molecule 1(Iba1) proteins were detected by Western blot, and the Iba1-positive microglial cells and HMGB1 and Iba1 co-labelled microglia were displayed by immunofluorescence staining. RESULTS: After SCI, the BBB scores on day 5 and 14 were obviously decreased (P<0.05), and the expression of HMGB1 on day 14, TLR4 on day 5 and 14, the number of Iba1-positive microglia as well as the co-expressed HMGB1/Iba1-positive microglia on day 5 and 14 were significantly increased in the model group relevant to the sham operation group (P<0.05, P<0.01). In the EA intervention group, SCI-induced reduction of BBB scores on day 5 and 14, and increases of the expression of HMGB1 and Iba1 on day 14, and TLR4 on day 5 and 14, and the number of Iba1-positive cells as well as the co-expressed HMGB1/Iba1-positive microglia on day 14 were reversed relevant to the model group (P<0.05,P<0.01). H.E. staining showed a structural disorder with lots of cavities, severe inflammatory infiltration with a large quantity of inflammatory cells, and a reduction of normal neurons in the injured spinal cord tissue in the model group, which was relatively milder, with lower activation of microglia in the EA group. CONCLUSION: EA can significantly improve locomotor function in SCI mice, which is associated with its effects in suppressing the expression of inflammatory factors such as HMGB1, TLR4, Iba1 and the over-activation of microglia.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) at "Jiaji" (EX-B2) on the levels of autophagy and endoplasmic reticulum stress in mice with spinal cord injury (SCI), so as to explore its mechanism underlying improvement of SCI. METHODS: A total of 60 female C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into sham operation, model and EA groups, which were further divided into 7 d and 14 d subgroups (10 mice in each subgroup). The SCI model was established by pressing the exposed spinal cord (L1) with a vascular clamp for 15 s. EA was applied to bilateral EX-B2 3 h after modeling, once a day for 7 and 14 d, respectively. Basso Mouse Scale(BMS) for locomotion was used to evaluate hindlimb motor function on day 7 and 14 after SCI. H.E. staining was used to observe histopathologic changes of the injured spinal cord tissue, and Western blot employed to detect the expression of glucose regulatory protein-78 (GRP78), Caspase-12, microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 II (LC-II) and P62(also known as sqstm1/Sequestome1) proteins. Immunofluorescence staining was used to detect the immunoacti-vities of spinal CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein (C/EBP) homologous protein (CHOP, an endoplasmic reticulum stress-inducible protein) and P62. RESULTS: On the 7th and 14th day after SCI, the BMS scores and expression levels of LC3II protein were significantly down-regulated (P<0.05), and the expression levels of P62, GRP78 and Caspase-12 proteins, the immunoactivities of CHOP and P62 were all significantly up-regulated on both day 7 and 14 in the model group than in the sham operation group (P<0.05).Compared with the model group, the BMS scores and the expression levels of LC3II protein were significantly increased on both day 7 and 14 (P<0.05), while the expression levels of P62, GRP78 and Caspase-12 proteins, and the immunoactivities of CHOP and P62 were obviously decreased on day 7 and 14 in the EA group (P<0.05). Outcomes of H.E. stain showed that the cells with nuclei pyknosis and swelling and the necrotic cells appeared in the model group, which was relatively fewer in the EA group. CONCLUSION: EA of EX-B2 can improve the locomotor function in SCI mice, which may be related to its effects in up-regulating the expression of LC3II (to promote cell autophagy), and down-regulating the expression of P62, GRP78, Caspase-12 and CHOP proteins (to inhibit endoplasmic reticulum stress) in the spinal cord tissue.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on the expression of apolipoprotein E (ApoE) and related proteins of inflammation and anti-oxidative stress in spinal cord in mice with spinal cord injury (SCI), so as to explore its mechanisms underlying function repair. METHODS: Thirty-six female C57BL/6 mice were equally randomized into 3 groups: sham operation, model and EA. The SCI model was established by clamping the spinal cord for 25 s with a serrefine after laminectomy of the 1st lumbar vertebra (L1). EA (1.5 Hz/7.5 Hz, 1.0 mA) was applied to bila-teral "Zusanli" (ST36) and "Sanyinjiao" (SP6) for 10 min, once a day for 7 days. The hindlimb locomotor function was assessed according to the state of the range of motion, coordination, claw gesture of the hind leg ankle-joint, trunk stabi-lity and the tail posture by using Basso Mouse Scale(BMS). The histopathological changes of the injured area of the spinal cord were determined by H.E. staining. The expression levels of ApoE, phosphorylated nuclear transcription factor-κB(p-NF-κB), interleukin 1 beta(IL-1ß), phosphorylated extracellular regulatory protein kinase(p-ERK1/2), extracellular regulatory protein kinase(ERK1/2), nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2(Nrf2) and heme oxidase-1(HO-1) in the spinal cord were detected by Western blot, and the glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)-positive astrocytes were displayed by immunofluorescence staining. RESULTS: After modeling, the BMS scores were significantly decreased in the model group compared with the sham operation group (P<0.05). Following EA, the BMS scores were markedly increased in the EA group relevant to the model group (P<0.05), suggesting an improvement of the hindlimb locomotor function. H.E. stain showed structural disorder with lots of cavities, severe inflammatory infiltration with large quantity of inflammatory cells, and apparent reduction of normal neurons in the injured spinal cord tissue of model group, which was milder in the EA group. The expression levels of ApoE, p-NF-κB, IL-1ß, p-ERK1/2 (not ERK1/2), Nrf2 and HO-1 were significantly increased in the model group than those in the sham operation group (P<0.05). Compared with the model group, the expression levels of ApoE, p-ERK1/2, Nrf2 and HO-1 were further notably up-regulated (P<0.05), and those of p-NF-κB and IL-1ß proteins obviously down-regulated in the EA group (P<0.05). Immunoflorescence staining showed that the number of GFAP-positive cells was apparently increased in the model group compared with the sham operation group and observably decreased in the EA group relevant to the model group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: EA can significantly improve locomotor function in SCI mice, which is associated with its effects in reducing inflammation, oxi-dative stress reactions and reactive astrocyte proliferation via up-regulating expression of ApoE, p-ERK1/2, and Nrf2/HO-1 (antioxidant pathway) and inhibiting IL-1ß and NF-κB expression.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on muscular atrophy and expression of microRNAs (Mir-1, Mir-133a, Mir-133b) and some proliferation-related factors of muscle satellite cells as histone deacetylase4 (HDAC4) and the paired box transcription factor Pax7 (Pax7) in skeletal muscle atrophy rats. METHODS: Twenty-four male SD rats were randomly and equally divided into sham operation, model and EA groups. The skeletal muscle atrophy model was established by transection of the right sciatic nerve. EA (2 Hz, 1 mA) was applied to the right "Zusanli"(ST36) and "Huantiao"(GB30) for 10 min, once a day, seven times a week for 2 weeks. The wet weight of bilateral gastrocnemius muscles was measured to calculate the ratio of weight between the affected gastrocnemius muscle and healthy gastrocnemius muscle. The cross-sectional area (CSA) of the gastrocnemius muscle on the affected side was measured after H.E. staining. The expression levels of Mir-1, Mir-133a, Mir-133b, HDAC4 mRNA and Pax7 mRNA in the gastrocnemius muscle tissue were detected using quantitative real time-PCR. RESULTS: Compared with the sham operation group, the ratio of wet weight and CSA of the gastrocnemius muscle, and the expression levels of Mir-1 and Mir-133a were significantly decreased in the model group (P<0.01, P<0.05), while the expression levels of HDAC4 mRNA and Mir-133b significantly up-regulated in the model group (P<0.05). Following EA intervention, the decreased levels of the ratio of wet weight and CSA of the gastrocnemius muscle were significantly suppressed (P<0.01), suggesting an inhibition of the skeletal muscle atrophy, and the expression levels of Pax7 and HDAC4 mRNAs were notably up-regulated (P<0.05), and those of Mir-1, Mir-133a and Mir-133b were significantly or further significantly down-regulated relevant to the model group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: EA intervention can delay muscular atrophy in rats with denervated gastrocnemius muscle, which may be related with its function in up-regulating the expression of Pax7 and HDAC4 mRNAs and down-regulating the expression of Mir-1, Mir-133a and Mir-133b.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) combined with transplantation of Schwann cells (SCs) on limb locomotor, myelin sheath repair and expression of CD4 and CD8 in compressed spinal cord injury (CSCI) rats, so as to explore its mechanisms underlying improvement of CSCI. METHODS: A total of 45 female SD rats were randomly divided into normal control, model, EA, Schwann cell (SC) transplantation, and EA+SC transplantation groups (n=9 rats in each group). The CSCI model was established by laminectomy at T12-L2 and clip compression. Rats of the SC transplantation group accepted injection of the cultured SC suspension (2×106/6 µL) into the central, upper and lower sites of the injured spinal cord (5 mm in depth) 7-8 days after CSCI modeling. EA (2 Hz) was applied to bilateral "Zusanli" (ST36) and "Sanyinjiao" (SP6) for 10 min, once daily and 6 days a week for 3 weeks. The Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan locomotor rating scale (BBB scale) was used to evaluate the function state of CSCI. Morphological changes of the regional injured tissue were observed under light microscope after H.E. staining. The myelin sheath repair state and survival of SCs were detected by Luxol fast blue (LFB) staining and immunofluorescence histochemistry, and the expression of CD4, CD8 and P0 of the injured spinal cord was detected by Western blot. RESULTS: Compared with the normal control group, the BBB scores at the time-points of 0 d, and 1, 2, and 3 weeks were significantly decreased in the model group (P<0.001), and those of the EA+SC transplantation group at the 2nd and 3rd week were significantly higher than those of the model group (P<0.05). No significant changes of BBB scores were found after EA and SC transplantation relevant to the model group (P>0.05). LFB staining showed a disordered arrangement of the nerve fibers in the white matter, myelinociasis and obvious decrease of the medullated fibers in the model group, and these situations were relatively milder in both EA and SC transplantation groups and obviously milder in the EA+SC transplantation group. H.E. staining displayed that the structure of the injured region of the spinal cord was incomplete, accompanied with a large number of defect cavities and neuronal karyopyknosis in the model group, while the structure was relatively clear, with an increase of the normal neurons and fewer neuronal karyopyknosis in the EA+SC transplantation group. Compared with the normal control group, MBP in the model group was significantly decreased (P<0.001),and P0 was significantly increased (P<0.001). Compared with the model group, the expressions of MBP and P0 were significantly increased in the EA, SC transplantation, and EA+SC transplantation groups (P<0.01, P<0.001), and was significantly higher in the EA+SC transplantation group than in both EA and SC transplantation groups (P<0.001). The average immunofluorescence intensity of Hoechst33342-labeled SCs was significantly higher in the EA+SC transplantation group than in the SC transplantation group (P<0.05). After CSCI, the expression levels of spinal CD4, CD8 and P0 proteins had no significant changes in comparison with the normal control group (P>0.05), while after the intervention and in comparison with the model group, the expression levels of P0 protein were significantly increased in the EA, SC transplantation and EA+SC transplantation groups (P<0.05), and was significantly higher in the EA+SC transplantation group than in both EA and SC transplantation groups (P<0.05). The expression levels of CD4 and CD8 proteins were significantly lower in the EA+SC transplantation group than in the SC transplantation group (P<0.05).. CONCLUSION: EA+SCs transplantation can improve the locomotor function in CSCI rats, which may be related to its effects in increasing the survival of transplanted SCs to promote the remyelination and in reducing the immune rejecting reaction.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the therapeutic effect of electroacupuncture (EA) of "Zusanli" (ST36) and "Ashi"-point on the healthy side (opposing needling) on muscular injury and expression of myogenin (myoG) and fast myosin skeletal heavy chain (Fast MyHC) proteins in the gastrocnemius muscle (GM) tissues in skeletal muscle contusion rats,so as to explore its mechanism underlying improvement of skeletal muscle injury. METHODS: A total of 54 male SD rats were divided into normal control (n = 6),model (n=24) and opposing needling (EA, n=24) groups. The latter two groups were further randomized into 3, 5, 7 and 14 d subgroups (n=6 per subgroup). The skeletal muscle contusion model of the hind-limb was established by using a self-made striking device. EA (1 Hz/3 Hz,1-2 mA) was applied to ST36 and "Ashi"-point on the uninjured side of the hind-limb for 15 min every time, once a day for 3, 5, 7 and 14 days, respectively. The injured GM was harvested on the 3rd, 5th, 7th and 14th day after muscular contusion. The morphological changes of the injured GM and the mean cross-sectional areas (CSAs) of the neonatal muscle cells were observed by microscope after H.E. staining. The immunoactivity of desmin protein (myogenic marker protein of myoblast cell) of GM was detected by immunofluorescence stain on the 7th day after injury, and the expression levels of myoG (on the 3rd and 5th day after injury) and fast MyHC protein of GM tissues (on the 7thand 14th day after injury) were detected by Western blot. RESULTS: H.E. staining of GS tissue showed fewer neuronal myocytes with disordered arrangement at different sizes, and appearance of some collagenous fibers among the mesenchyme on day 7 and 14 after muscular contusion, which was relatively milder in the EA group. In the EA group, the CSA values of the neonatal muscle cells were significantly larger than those in the model group on the day 7th (P<0.05), 14th (P<0.001) after injury. On day 7 after muscular contusion, the desmin was found to express on the cellular membrane of GM in the normal control group, while in the model group, the desmin expressed mainly in the cellular plasma in the model group, and on the cellular membrane of neonatal myocytes in the EA group, respectively. The desmin positive myocytes showed disordered arrangement and different sizes after muscular contusion, whereas the situations of the EA group were close to those of the normal control group. Desmin expression was up-regulated in the EA group compared with the model group which was not significant difference (P>0.05). On the 3rd and 5th day after muscular contusion, the expression level of myoG protein was significantly up-regulated in the model group compared with the normal control group (P<0.001), and significantly up-regulated in the EA group than that in the model group (P<0.001). On the 7th and14th day after contusion, the expression level of fast MyHC protein was significantly down-regulated in the model group relevant to the normal control group (P<0.001), and markedly up-regulated in the EA group relevant to the model group (P<0.01).. CONCLUSION: EA of ST36 and "Ashi"-point on the contralateral limb can up-regulate the expression of myoG and fast MyHC proteins of GM in acute skeletal muscle contusion rats, which may contribute to its effect in promoting the repair of skeletal muscle injury.

Open access journals benefit researchers and the general public by promoting visibility, sharing and communicating. Non-mainstream journals should turn the challenge of open access into opportunity of presenting best research articles to the global readership. Open access journals need to optimize their business models to promote the healthy and continuous development.

There is urgent need for medical journals to optimize their publishing processes and strategies to satisfy the huge need for medical scientists to publish their articles, and then obtain better prestige and impact in scientific and research community. These strategies include optimizing the process of peer-review, utilizing open-access publishing models actively, finding ways of saving costs and getting revenue, smartly dealing with research fraud or misconduct, maintaining sound relationship with pharmaceutical companies, and managing to provide relevant and useful information for clinical practitioners and researchers. Scientists, publishers, societies and organizations need to work together to publish internationally renowned medical journals.
