RESUMO

Advances in techniques for perioperative management have reduced the morbidity associated with major oral and maxillofacial surgery. Simultaneously, pressures for cost control have affected patient access to surgical services. This report details the steps undertaken to effect a transition of major maxillofacial surgical procedures to an outpatient setting. Protocols for surgical, anesthetic, and postoperative management are described. Treatment outcomes for the first 200 cases are reported. Only 1% of cases required subsequent inpatient care and a less than 1% major revision rate was experienced.

RESUMO

A consensus does not exist regarding an optimal reconstructive strategy following discectomy of the temporomandibular joint. This study presents retrospective documentation of the treatment outcome experienced with the use of autologous auricular cartilage grafting after discectomy in 26 joints. At an average follow-up slightly in excess of 2 years, this procedure appears to have approximately 85% effectiveness in producing significant relief of pain and increasing mandibular range of motion.

RESUMO

An anatomic pattern of dentofacial deformity consistent with the diagnosis of vertical maxillary deficiency (short face syndrome, Type 2) was observed in a patient with cleidocranial dysplasia. Detailed description of diagnostic findings and the coordinated sequence of surgical-orthodontic care over a 16-month period of follow-up are presented. An 11 mm lengthening of facial height was obtained. Results of surgical and orthodontic stability are presented. A relationship between conditions with anodontia or pseudo-anodontia and vertical maxillary deficiency is hypothesized.

RESUMO

The treatment results in 31 consecutive patients treated with Proplast for chin augmentation show good clinical succes with the implant. A critical analysis of treatment results reveals that attention to certain details of the preoperative evaluation, surgical technique, and postoperative care can make for impressive results. These facts are discussed.

RESUMO

A retrospective investigation was performed with use of cephalometric radiographs from eight patients with anterior maxillary advancement. Soft tissue changes associated with hard tissue changes were measured. Statistical description of soft tissue behavior in the upper lip was performed using correlation coefficients, regression functions, and ratios of change in the relationship of soft tissue to hard tissue. Ratios of change in relationship of soft tissue to hard tissue for three parameters of upper lip movement are proposed for clinical use in treatment planning. Further investigation of soft tissue behavior with orthognathic surgical procedures is indicated.

RESUMO

Hard and soft tissue measurements were obtained for nine Caucasian women. Based on these measurements, regression formulas were derived to approximate the soft tissue covering based on hard tissue data. The results are presented iconically by computer drawings. The preliminary data presented would suggest a definite predictable influence exerted by the facial skeleton on the position of landmarks in the overlying soft tissue.
