RESUMO

Heavy metals like Cr (VI), when released into the environment, pose a serious threat to animal and human health. In this study, iron and (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) biochar composites were prepared from the biochar, which was produced through the pyrolysis of rice straw at 400 and 600 °C, using the chemical processes with an aim that the doping of pristine biochar structure with the Fe and NH2 radicals would enhance the removal of Cr (VI) and Zn (II) adsorption in both aqueous solution and soil. Both biochar composites were mixed at a rate of 3% (w/w) with the mine soil for the soil incubation test, and after completion of the test, a soil fertility index (SFI) was calculated. Results showed that both iron and APTES biochar composites followed the Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm showing the maximum removal capacity of 100.59 mg/g for Cr (VI) by APTES/SiBC 600 and maximum adsorption capacity of 83.92 mg/g for Zn2+ by Fe/BC 400. The SFI of the mine-soil amended with both Fe and APTES biochar composites were 16.67 and 13.04%, respectively higher than the controlled study. The mitotic index of the A. cepa cells that grew up in the soil amended with Fe/BC and APTES/SiBC were 40.47 and 44.45%, respectively, higher than the controlled study. The results indicated that the incorporation of the Fe and APTES biochar composites in the soil effectively reduced the metal toxicity and improved the soil physicochemical properties. This study opens up the prospects of using biochar composites in contaminated soil and water treatments.

The supplementation of 50 ppm dosed silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as a disinfectant in broilers drinking water was investigated to examine their growth performance, blood serum biochemistry, and organ histology in the case group, compared to the control. The growth performance parameters, such as water intake, feed intake, and body weight were recorded 6 times, each in an interval of 7 days, over a period of 42 days. At the end of each 42 days, the blood and major organs of the 1 case boiler out of 75 and 1 control broiler out of 75 were collected in random. The procedure was repeated 3 sets one after another, each consisting 42 day intervening period. The liver enzyme, lipid profile, glucose level, organ histology, and concentration of AgNPs in liver, spleen, heart, and small intestine were determined. The obtained results show that the growth performance of the case broilers was significantly higher than the control section (p < 0.05). However, in all the three sets the changes in lipid profile, liver enzyme, and glucose level of the case broilers were not statistically significantly different compared to the control (p > 0.05). The histology of liver, kidney, heart, spleen, and small intestine of broilers has not shown any damages to the cells as compared to the control samples. In the case samples, the highest concentration of AgNPs was observed in the small intestine (5.44 µg/g) followed by liver (4.32 µg/g), kidney (3.94 µg/g), heart (3.82 µg/g), and spleen (3.49 µg/g). The present study concludes that the administering 50 ppm AgNPs of average 15 nm size in the poultry drinking water was found safe for consumption as well as for growth enhancing, due to better bird comfort.

External dosing of sweetmeat waste (SMW) dosing into exhausted upflow packed bed bioreactor (PBR) resulted in prompt reactivation of SO4(2-) removal. Different SMW concentrations in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD)/SO4(2-) ratios (1, 2, 4 and 8) were introduced into four identical PBR where process stability was found within 3 weeks of operation. SO4(2-) removal was proportional to COD/SO4(2-) ratios up to 4 at which maximum sulfate removal (99%) was achieved at a rate of 607 mg/d. The value of COD consumption:SO4(2-)removal was much higher at ratio 4 than 8 whereas, ratio 2 was preferred over all. Net effluent acetate concentration profile and total microbial population attached to the reactor matrices were corresponding to COD/SO4(2-) ratio as 4>8>2>>1. Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) population was found to be inversely proportional to COD/SO4(2-) ratio in which acetate oxidizing SRB and fermentative bacteria were the dominant.

Passive remediation of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) is a popular technology under development in current research. Roles of algae and fungi, the natural residents of AMD and its attenuator are not emphasized adequately in the mine water research. Living symbiotically various species of algae and fungi effectively enrich the carbon sources that help to maintain the sulfate reducing bacterial (SRB) population in predominantly anaerobic environment. Algae produce anoxic zone for SRB action and help in biogenic alkalinity generation. While studies on algal population and actions are relatively available those on fungal population are limited. Fungi show capacity to absorb significant amount of metals in their cell wall, or by extracellular polysaccharide slime. This review tries to throw light on the roles of these two types of microorganisms and to document their activities in holistic form in the mine water environment. This work, inter alia, points out the potential and gap areas of likely future research before potential applications based on fungi and algae initiated AMD remediation can be made on sound understanding.

Antibacterial activity of hot aqueous and methanolic extracts prepared from six plants (Terminallia chebula, Terminallia bellerica, Phyllanthus emblica, Punica granatum, Lawsonia alba and Mikania micrantha) used in traditional folk medicines of India were screened against five pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus MTCC 2940, Bacillus subtilis MTCC 441, Escherichia coli MTCC 739, Proteus vulgaris MTCC 426 and Enterobacter aerogenes MTCC 111). The highest antibacterial potentiality was exhibited by the methanolic leaf extract of T. chebula, followed by the aqueous fruit extract of T. bellerica. The leaf extract of T. chebula can be considered to be as equally potent as the most effective antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin, gentamycin, kanamycin, ofloxacin and cephalexin. A sensitivity test performed with commonly used sensitivity test disks resulted in the appearance of multiple drug resistance phenotypes of the bacteria tested. A comparison of data in the inhibition zones of pathogenic bacteria showed that gentamycin, ofloxacin, kanamycin and tobramycin were effective against all of the bacterial strains tested.
