RESUMO

Agricultural field experiments are costly and time-consuming, and often struggling to capture spatial and temporal variability. Mechanistic crop growth models offer a solution to understand intricate crop-soil-weather system, aiding farm-level management decisions throughout the growing season. The objective of this study was to calibrate and the Crop Environment Resource Synthesis CERES-Maize (DSSAT v 4.8) model to simulate crop growth, yield, and nitrogen dynamics in a long-term conservation agriculture (CA) based maize system. The model was also used to investigate the relationship between, temperature, nitrate and ammoniacal concentration in soil, and nitrogen uptake by the crop. Additionally, the study explored the impact of contrasting tillage practices and fertilizer nitrogen management options on maize yields. Using field data from 2019 and 2020, the DSSAT-CERES-Maize model was calibrated for plant growth stages, leaf area index-LAI, biomass, and yield. Data from 2021 were used to evaluate the model's performance. The treatments consisted of four nitrogen management options, viz., N0 (without nitrogen), N150 (150 kg N/ha through urea), GS (Green seeker-based urea application) and USG (urea super granules @150kg N/ha) in two contrasting tillage systems, i.e., CA-based zero tillage-ZT and conventional tillage-CT. The model accurately simulated maize cultivar's anthesis and physiological maturity, with observed value falling within 5% of the model's predictions range. LAI predictions by the model aligned well with measured values (RMSE 0.57 and nRMSE 10.33%), with a 14.6% prediction error at 60 days. The simulated grain yields generally matched with measured values (with prediction error ranging from 0 to 3%), except for plots without nitrogen application, where the model overestimated yields by 9-16%. The study also demonstrated the model's ability to accurately capture soil nitrate-N levels (RMSE 12.63 kg/ha and nRMSE 12.84%). The study concludes that the DSSAT-CERES-Maize model accurately assessed the impacts of tillage and nitrogen management practices on maize crop's growth, yield, and soil nitrogen dynamics. By providing reliable simulations during the growing season, this modelling approach can facilitate better planning and more efficient resource management. Future research should focus on expanding the model's capabilities and improving its predictions further.

RESUMO

Cu2AgBiI6 (CABI) is a promising perovskite-inspired absorber for solar cells due to its direct band gap and high absorption coefficient. However, the nonradiative recombination caused by the high extrinsic trap density limits the performance of CABI-based solar cells. In this work, we employ halide engineering by doping bromide anions (Br-) in CABI thin films, in turn significantly improving the power conversion efficiency (PCE). By introducing Br- in the synthetic route of CABI thin films, we identify the optimum composition as CABI-10Br (with 10% Br at the halide site). The tailored composition appears to reduce the deep trap density as shown by time-resolved photoluminescence and transient absorption spectroscopy characterizations. This leads to a dramatic increase in the lifetime of charge carriers, which therefore improves both the external quantum efficiency and the integrated short-circuit current. The photovoltaic performance shows a significant boost since the PCE under standard 1 sun illumination increases from 1.32 to 1.69% (∼30% relative enhancement). Systematic theoretical and experimental characterizations were employed to investigate the effect of Br- incorporation on the optoelectronic properties of CABI. Our results highlight the importance of mitigating trap states in lead-free perovskite-inspired materials and that Br- incorporation at the halide site is an effective strategy for improving the device performance.

RESUMO

This cross-sectional study was conducted to explore quinolone resistant Enterobacteriaceae followed by searching the prevalence of three groups of quinolone resistance genes (QnrA, QnrB and QnrS) from January 2015 to December 2015 at Dhaka Medical College hospital, Bangladesh. Then genes for ESBL and AmpC ß-lactamase were detected among Qnr positive strains for better understanding the role of these genes for multiple drug resistance. Total 340 urines, sputum, wound swab and blood samples were collected from DMCH. Total 270(79.41%) Enterobacteriaceae were isolated from 340 samples. Out of 270 Enterobacteriaceae, 225(83.33%) were quinolone (ciprofloxacin) resistant strains. Qnr genes were detected in 141(62.67%) of the 225 quinolone resistant Enterobacteriaceae. Total 187 Qnr genes [84(59.57%) QnrS, 70(49.64%) QnrB and 33(23.40%) QnrA] were detected from 141 quinolone resistant strains. Total 48(34.04%) ESBL producers were detected by DDS test and 47(33.33%) ESBL producers were positive by PCR among 141 Qnr positive strains. QnrA was co-existed with CTX-M-15. QnrB was co-existed with TEM, CTXM-15 and OXA-1. QnrS genes were also associated with TEM, CTX-M-15 and OXA-1. Among 52 cefoxitin resistant Qnr positive strains, 22(42.31%) AmpC ß-lactamase producers were detected by Modified three-dimensional test (MTDT) and 45(86.54%) AmpC ß-lactamase producers were detected by PCR. QnrA had been identified with DHA, ACC, EBC and CIT while QnrB had been identified with DHA, ACC, EBC and CIT. QnrS had also been co-existed with DHA, ACC, EBC and CIT. The results of this study provided insights into the high proportion of Qnr genes among isolated Enterobacteriaceae. Simultaneous presence of Qnr genes and genes for extended-spectrum ß-lactamase or AmpC ß-lactamase were observed in multidrug resistant Enterobacteriaceae.

RESUMO

Labour is a normal physiological process considered by a progressive rise in frequency, intensity, and duration of uterine contractions resulting in effacement and dilatation of the cervix with descent of the fetus over the birth canal. Spontaneous or Induced labour has a significant role in the eventual mode of delivery and neonatal outcome. This study aims to compare mean duration of labour and maternofoetal outcome of spontaneous versus induced labour among nulliparous women. This was a prospective observational study conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) from October 2016 to September 2017. The study was conducted in nulliparous women coming at term (38-41) weeks in active phase of labour (with cervical dilatation at least 4cm) either spontaneous or induced, both group of labouring women were monitored using modified WHO partograph. Outcomes measures include requirement of augmentation of labour with oxytocin, mean duration of labour, eventual mode of delivery, and the maternofoetal outcome. A total of 160 women were enrolled in this study into two groups. There was no difference in mean age group, but BMI and gestational age were noted significant (p=0.001) More women had spontaneous normal vaginal delivery among those with spontaneous labour (86.25% vs. 78.75%). The mean duration of the second stage of labour was significantly more in induced (17.65 minutes) than in spontaneous labour (14.78 minutes) with a significant P-value (p=0.001). The mean Apgar score between the groups showed almost same. No statistically significant difference was found (p>0.05). This study prevailed that, requirement of oxytocin for augmentation of labour and mean duration of labour was less in spontaneous group and most of the patient delivered vaginally but in induced group rate of caesarean was higher and requirement of oxytocin for labour augmentation was also more than spontaneous group. We observed that induced labour can be a safe procedure among nulliparous women if labour is monitored by modified WHO partograph.

RESUMO

"White-eyed blowout" fractures in pediatric patients can be presented with fewer clinical symptoms; therefore, immediate diagnosis and surgery is essential. In cases where early surgery was performed, rapid recovery and better postoperative outcomes were noted regardless of the configuration of fracture. In pediatric patients, due to changes in the orbital volume, autograft is recommended. Although there are different approaches to orbital floor, transantral approach provides enhanced illumination and accessibility to orbital floor. This case report portrays a pediatric case of white-eyed blow out fracture which went unnoticed for about 1 month and was managed at a later date. Combined mid-tarsal and transantral approaches using iliac crest graft was used to repair the orbital blow-out fracture.

RESUMO

Canopy covers can be measured using destructive (visual) and non-destructive methods (spectral indices, photogrammetry, visual assessment, and quantum sensor). The precision of crop cover estimation, however, is dependent on the selection of appropriate methods. Studies were conducted at the Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute, Jhansi to compare the forage crops canopy cover estimated using photogrammetry software (Canopeo and SamplePoint) and visual assessments. Assessments were performed in three summer crops (corn, cowpea, and sorghum), two winter crops (Egyptian clover, and oats), and bare ground condition. For each plot, three nadir images (directly above the canopy) were captured using digital cameras from a height of 1.5 m above the soil surface between 10 AM to 2 PM on bright sunny days. The results indicated that the relationships between visual assessment and Canopeo (regression coefficient, (R2 = 0.96), visual assessment and SamplePoint (0.96), and Canopeo and SamplePoint (0.98) were linear when data were pooled across all the crops. SamplePoint and Canopeo is further, appropriate for cowpea (Pearson coefficient (R = 0.99 and 0.94), oats (0.92 and 0.97), and sorghum (0.46 and 0.51), respectively. SamplePoint and Canopeo are not suitable for berseem (-0.15) and corn (-0.61), respectively, due to dead residues after the first harvest in berseem and taller corn might have influenced the image quality. Therefore, the stage of the crop, the height of the crop, and dead residues around the plants can greatly influence the estimation of crop cover. In conclusion, the results indicated that this photogrammetry software can be used for non-destructive crop canopy measurement with the above-mentioned precautions in the forage crops tested. •Forage canopy cover is estimated generally by visual scoring, and the outcome varies widely from person to person.•Photogrammetry methods (Canopeo and SamplePoint) were positiviely correlated with visual scoring for cowpea, oats, and sorghum.•However, Canopeo and SamplePoint may not suitable for taller crops like corn and ratoon crops like berseem.

RESUMO

Photosynthesis, crop health and dry matter partitioning are among the most important factors influencing crop productivity and quality. Identifying variation in these parameters may help discover the plausible causes for crop productivity differences under various management practices and cropping systems. Thus, a 2-year (2019-2020) study was undertaken to investigate how far the integrated crop management (ICM) modules and cropping systems affect maize physiology, photosynthetic characteristics, crop vigour and productivity in a holistic manner. The treatments included nine main-plot ICM treatments [ICM1 to ICM4 - conventional tillage (CT)-based; ICM5 to ICM8 - conservation agriculture (CA)-based; ICM9 - organic agriculture (OA)-based] and two cropping systems, viz., maize-wheat and maize + blackgram-wheat in subplots. The CA-based ICM module, ICM7 resulted in significant (p < 0.05) improvements in the physiological parameters, viz., photosynthetic rate (42.56 µ mol CO2 m-2 sec-1), transpiration rate (9.88 m mol H2O m-2 sec-1) and net assimilation rate (NAR) (2.81 mg cm-2 day-1), crop vigour [NDVI (0.78), chlorophyll content (53.0)], dry matter partitioning toward grain and finally increased maize crop productivity (6.66 t ha-1) by 13.4-14.2 and 27.3-28.0% over CT- and OA-based modules. For maize equivalent grain yield (MEGY), the ICM modules followed the trend as ICM7 > ICM8 > ICM5 > ICM6 > ICM3 > ICM4 > ICM1 > ICM2 > ICM9. Multivariate and PCA analyses also revealed a positive correlation between physiological parameters, barring NAR and both grain and stover yields. Our study proposes an explanation for improved productivity of blackgram-intercropped maize under CA-based ICM management through significant improvements in physiological and photosynthetic characteristics and crop vigour. Overall, the CA-based ICM module ICM7 coupled with the maize + blackgram intercropping system could be suggested for wider adoption to enhance the maize production in semiarid regions of India and similar agroecologies across the globe.

RESUMO

In rice farming, the blast disease caused by Magnaporthe oryzae (T.T. Hebert) M.E. Barr. is one of the primary production constraints worldwide. The current blast management options such as blast-resistant varieties and spraying fungicides are neither durable nor commercially and environmentally compatible. In the present study, we investigated the antifungal and defense elicitor activity of potassium phosphite (Phi) against M. oryzae on elite rice cultivar BPT5204 (popularly known as Samba Mahsuri in India) and its transgenic rice variant (ptxD-OE) over-expressing a phosphite dehydrogenase enzyme. The Phi was evaluated both preventively and curatively on rice genotypes where the preventive spray of Phi outperformed the Phi curative application with significant reductions in both rice blast severity (35.67-60.49%) and incidence (22.27-53.25%). Moreover, the application of Phi increased the levels of photosynthetic pigments (Chlorophyll and Carotenoids) coupled with increased activity of defense enzymes (PAL, SOD, and APx). Besides, Phi application also induced the expression of defense-associated genes (OsCEBiP and OsPDF2.2) in the rice leaf. Furthermore, the Phi application reduced the reactive Malondialdehyde (lipid peroxidation) to minimize the cellular damage incited by Magnaporthe in rice. Overall, the present study showed the potential of Phi for blast suppression on rice as an alternative to the current excessive use of toxic fungicides.

RESUMO

Weeds, pests, and pathogens are among the pre-harvest constraints in rice farming across rice-growing countries. For weed management, manual weeding and herbicides are widely practiced. Among the herbicides, glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine] is a broad-spectrum systemic chemical extensively used in agriculture. Being a competitive structural analog to phosphoenolpyruvate, it selectively inhibits the conserved 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) enzyme required for the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids and essential metabolites in eukaryotes and prokaryotes. In the present study, we investigated the antifungal and defense elicitor activity of glyphosate against Magnaporthe oryzae on transgenic-rice overexpressing a glyphosate-resistance OsEPSPS gene (T173I + P177S; TIPS OsmEPSPS) for blast disease management. The glyphosate foliar spray on OsmEPSPS transgenic rice lines showed both prophylactic and curative suppression of blast disease comparable to a blasticide, tricyclazole. The glyphosate displayed direct antifungal activity on Magnaporthe oryzae as well as enhanced the levels of antioxidant enzymes and photosynthetic pigments in rice. However, the genes associated with phytohormones-mediated defense (OsPAD4, OsNPR1.3, and OsFMO) and innate immunity pathway (OsCEBiP and OsCERK1) were found repressed upon glyphosate spray. Altogether, the current study is the first report highlighting the overexpression of a crop-specific TIPS mutation in conjugation with glyphosate application showing potential for blast disease management in rice cultivation.

RESUMO

Radiopharmaceuticals with therapeutic applications are designed to deliver high doses of radiation to target organs with minimizing unwanted radiation to healthy tissues. Owing to the potential of targeted radiotherapy to treat a wide range of malignancies, 170Tm -EDTMP was developed for possible therapeutic applications. This study describes absorbed dose prediction of 170Tm-EDTMP in human organs after animal injection which is determined via medical internal radiation dose (MIRD) and MCNP-4C code methods. It was estimated that a 1-MBq administration of 170Tm-EDTMP into the human body would result in an absorbed dose of 37.9 mGy (MIRD method) and 38.02 mGy (MCNP-4C code) in the bone surface after 60 days post injection. Highest and lowest difference between MIRD and MCNP results are for lung and bone surface respectively. Finally, the results show that there is a good agreement between MIRD method and MCNP-4C simulation code for absorbed dose estimation.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The ORNATE India project is funded by the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) through the Global Challenges Research Fund. The aim is to build research capacity and capability in India and the UK to tackle global burden of diabetes-related visual impairment. As there are over 77 million people with diabetes in India, it is challenging to screen every person with diabetes annually for sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy (DR). Therefore, alternate safe approaches need to be developed so that those at-risk of visual impairment due to DR is identified promptly and treated. METHODS: The project team utilised diverse global health strategies and research methods to co-design work packages to build research capacity and capability to ensure effective, affordable and efficient DR services are made available for the population. The strategies and methods employed included health system strengthening; implementation science; establishing care pathways; co-designing collaborative studies on affordable technologies, developing quality standards and guidelines to decrease variations in care; economic analysis; risk modelling and stratification. Five integrated work packages have been developed to deal with all aspects of DR care. These included implementation of a DR screening programme in the public health system in a district in Kerala, evaluating regional prevalence of diabetes and DR and assessing ideal tests for holistic screening for diabetes and its complications in 20 areas in India, utilising artificial intelligence on retinal images to facilitate DR screening, exploring biomarker and biosensor research to detect people at risk of diabetes complications, estimating cost of blindness in India and risk modelling to develop risk-based screening models for diabetes and its complications. A large collaborative network will be formed to propagate research, promote shared learning and bilateral exchanges between high- and middle-income countries to tackle diabetes-related blindness.

RESUMO

Rheology is known to have an impact on the performance of digesters, but the effect of additional substrates (co-digestion) is poorly understood. The main objective of this study was to investigate the effects of the addition of cellulose, protein and lipids to substrates on the rheological behaviour and biogas production of the mixture of primary sludge (PS) and waste-activated sludge (WAS) in a batch system. A mixture of PS and WAS to form the main substrate was anaerobically co-digested with different types of organic matter (cellulose, protein and lipids) as co-substrates at different co-substrate to main substrate ratios of 2-8 (wt%) under mesophilic conditions and below ammonia inhibition levels. Yield stress (τy) and the flow consistency index (k) of the combined feed in the case of cellulose and protein were significantly dependent on the amount of co-substrate added, while there was an insignificant impact on these properties when lipids were added. Cellulose significantly increased τy and k in the feed, which resulted in poor fluidity and the improper homogenisation of the digester content, and consequently decreased the biogas yield. In contrast, the biogas yield was improved through the addition of 2% to 6% protein despite an increase in τy and k of the feed, but the methane yield decreased at 7% and 8% levels of protein concentration. This observation indicates that the threshold for τy and k of the digester media depends on the organic nature and digestibility of the substrate. There was no significant impact on the flow properties of the initial mixture when lipids were added, and their addition increased the biogas yield. A first-order kinetic reaction model was used for predicting the yield of methane from these digesters. The rate constant values revealed an increasing trend, with the highest for protein then lipids then cellulose.

RESUMO

We investigated immunohistochemical detection of porcine Sapelovirus (PSV) in naturally infected pigs of different ages. Forty-nine fecal samples, intestinal contents and other tissue samples from dead pigs were screened in previous study using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for PSV infection. Eight animals were positive for PSV based on RT-PCR examination. Gross lesions were recorded mainly in the large and small intestines. Microscopic examination of intestines showed severe enteritis. Tissue sections of all organs from PSV positive animals were immunostained using hyperimmune serum raised in rats against PSV that had been grown in a BHK-21 cell line. Staining of PSV was found only in the large and small intestines.

RESUMO

A novel class of 4,6-O-butylidene/ethylidene/benzylidene ß-d-glucopyranose gelator functionalized with photo-responsive azobenzene moieties were designed and synthesized and also characterized using different spectral techniques. These azobenzene-based organogelators can gel even at lower concentrations (critical gelation concentration - 0.5% and 1%). A morphological study of the gels shows one-dimensional aggregated bundles and helical fibres. The main driving force for the self-assembly is through cooperative interactions exhibited by the different groups viz., sugar hydroxyl (hydrogen bonding interaction), azobenzene (aromatic π-π interaction) and alkyl chain of the protecting group (van der Waals interaction).

RESUMO

Analytic fits to the recommended electron-impact excitation and ionization cross sections for Be I are presented. The lowest 19 terms of configurations 2snl (n ≤ 4) and 2p 2 terms below the first ionization limit are considered. The fits are based on the accurate calculations with the convergent close coupling (CCC) method as well as the B-spline R-matrix (BSR) approach. The fitted cross sections provide rate coefficients that are believed to approximate the original data within 10% with very few exceptions. The oscillator strengths for the dipole-allowed transitions between all the considered states are calculated with the relativistic multi-configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) approach and compared with the CCC and BSR results. This comparison shows a very good agreement except for a handful of cases with likely strong cancellations.

RESUMO

Mesophilic batch anaerobic digesters fed by different substrates were set up to identify the role of substrate rheology in anaerobic digestion performance while operating below the toxic level. Five substrates of different rheological behaviour but at the same amount of organic matters were prepared by addition of different amount of an inert material (0, 0.03, 0.07, 0.11, and 0.20 g) per g of waste activated sludge (WAS). To gain a comprehensive insight, the interactive relationship between substrate rheology, physico-chemical properties and biogas production as well as digestate dewaterability was investigated. The results proved that better access of microorganisms to organic matters improved the digester performance and led to 19.29% and 12.5% increase in biogas yield and VS removal efficiency, respectively. Moreover, the statistical analysis showed that consistency index and loss modulus of sludge could be employed as promising indications for biogas yield while yield stress could predict dewaterability of digestate as far as the other physico-chemical properties remained unchanged. During digestion measurement of consistency index and loss modulus of digestate could be performed as a reliable tool to monitor biogas production.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The closed reduction of a displaced nasal fracture is a preferred method in oral and maxillofacial surgery. This prospective study was conducted to evaluate the treatment outcome following closed reduction of nasal bone fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 20 patients with nasal bone fracture who underwent closed reduction were included in the study. The cases were operated under local or general anesthesia. The outcome of treatment was evaluated pre- and postoperatively through systematic follow-ups. Clinical assessment was done to evaluate functional (airway patency, nasal obstruction, crepitus) as well as esthetic parameters (facial symmetry, swelling, and nasal deviation). Functional and esthetic satisfaction of patients was assessed using visual analog scale (VAS) pre- and post-operatively. RESULTS: It was observed that there was significant improvement in both functional and esthetic parameters following closed reduction of nasal fractures. CONCLUSION: The present study suggested that closed reduction of nasal bone fracture is very effective in the management of nasal bone fractures. However, further studies with larger sample size in different clinical situations should be considered to confirm the efficacy of the same. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Closed reduction can be a viable and more conservative alternative in management of nasal fractures.

RESUMO

To assess the acceptability and efficacy immediate Postpartum Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (PPIUCD) among parturient at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Bangladesh; this prospective interventional analytical study was conducted from January 2013 to June 2013. Contraceptive counseling was given to 370 eligible parturient after delivery during their postpartum hospitalization. A pre-tested structured data collection sheet was administered to all participants. Women who accepted the PPIUCD during their postpartum care were inserted with the device before discharge (within 48 hours). These women were followed up at 6 weeks for complications. The acceptance rate of PPIUCD and the percentage of actual insertions were recorded. The reasons for both acceptances and decline were also recorded. Of the 370 women counseled, a total of 132(35.67%) were inserted with PPIUCD. Parturient who had a short duration from their last child birth (2-3) were significantly associated with greater acceptance of the PPIUCD. Preference of other methods of contraception mainly short acting methods and the need to discuss with their partners were the most common reasons for declining use of PPIUCD. More than half (51.51%) of the women whom PPIUCD was inserted did so due to its long term effect. Immediate PPIUCD was demonstrably safe due to its low rates of complications. The common complications at six weeks interval were expulsion (5.8%) and lost strings (2.5%) and pelvic infection (1.66%). Acceptance of PPIUCD was relatively high probably because of its 'newness' in the community. For these women, the best opportunity to receive information about contraception is during child birth when they are in contact with healthcare providers. It is also important to emphasize and educate women on long term methods of contraception as majority of the women preferred short term methods despite their future pregnancy desires of more than three years. Couple counseling should also be promoted. The government needs to develop strategies to increase public awareness of the PPIUCD through different media sources.

RESUMO

Proteins in the venom of the fire ant Solenopsis invicta have been suggested to function in pheromone binding. Venom from queens and workers contains different isoforms of these proteins, consistent with the differing pheromones they secrete, but questions remain about the venom protein composition and glandular source. We found that the queen venom contains a previously uncharacterized pheromone-binding protein paralogue known as Sol i 2X1. Using imaging mass spectrometry, we located the main venom proteins in the poison sac, implying that pheromones might have to compete with venom alkaloids for binding. Using the known structure of the worker venom protein Sol i 2w, we generated three-dimensional homology models of the worker venom protein Sol i 4.02, and of the two main venom proteins in queens and female alates, Sol i 2q and Sol i 2X1. Surprisingly, the models show that the proteins have relatively small internal hydrophobic binding pockets that are blocked by about 10 amino acids of the C-terminal region. For these proteins to function as carriers of hydrophobic ligands, a conformational change would be required to displace the C-terminal region, somewhat like the mechanism known to occur in the silk moth pheromone-binding protein.
