RESUMO

Multimedia resources, such as instructional videos, are currently enjoying a certain popularity in the training programs for medical and dental students. The major challenge is to create such resources with quality content that is approved by students. In order to answer this challenge, it is imperative to find out which features of instructional videos are considered to be necessary and useful by students, thus being able to excite them, to hold their attention, and to stimulate them in learning with pleasure. AIM: We investigated the opinions of a sample of 551 students from four medical universities in Romania, in order to identify the students' preferred characteristics in instructional videos, both globally and comparatively on genders and age groups and also according to their general preferences for using internet services. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used univariate (hypothesis testing) and multivariate (two-step clustering) data analysis techniques and revealed three clusters of students, primarily determined by their perceptions of the visual appearance of the instructional videos. RESULTS: The structure of the clusters by gender and age group was relatively similar, but we recorded differences associated with the students' expressed preferences for certain internet services compared to others. The first identified cluster (35.4% of the cases) contains students who prefer instructional videos to contain images used only for aesthetic purposes and to fill the gaps; they use internet services mainly for communication. The second cluster of students (34.8%) prefers videos designed as practical lessons, using explanatory drawings and diagrams drawn at the same time as the explanations; they also use internet services mainly for communication. The last cluster of students (29.8%) prefer videos designed as PowerPoint presentations, with animated pictures, diagrams, and drawings; they are slightly younger than the others and use internet services mainly for information and communication, but also for domestic facilities. CONCLUSIONS: The students' preferences for certain features of instructional videos depend not only on gender and age but are also related to their developmental background and general opinions about modern technologies.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Accidental hypothermia (AH) presents a significant mortality risk, even in individuals with good health. Early recognition of the parameters associated with negative prognosis could save more lives. METHODS: This was a pilot, retrospective observational study, conducted in the largest Emergency Hospital in North Eastern Romania, which included all patients with AH (defined as body temperature below 35°C), hospitalized and treated in our hospital between 2019 and 2022. RESULTS: A total of 104 patients with AH were included in our study, 90 of whom had data collected and statistically analyzed. The clinical, biological, and therapeutic parameters associated with negative outcomes were represented by a reduced GCS score (p=0.024), diminished systolic and diastolic blood pressure (p=0.007 respectively, 0.013), decreased bicarbonate (p=0.043) and hemoglobin levels (p=0.002), the presence of coagulation disorders (p=0.007), as well as the need for administration of inotropic or vasopressor medications (p=0.04). CONCLUSION: In this pilot, retrospective, observational study, the negative outcomes observed in patients with AH hospitalized in the largest Emergency Hospital in North-Eastern Romania were associated with several clinical, biochemical, and therapeutic factors, which are easy to identify in clinical practice. Recognizing the significance of these associated factors empowers healthcare practitioners to intervene at an early stage to save more lives.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Atypical meningiomas (AMs), World Health Organization (WHO) grade 2, are a group of tumors with uneven and unpredictable clinical behavior. Our aim was to analyze possible tumor recurrence predictors, and to identify factors that improve progression-free survival (PFS). PATIENTS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our retrospective study included 81 patients followed up in the Prof. Dr. Nicolae Oblu Emergency Clinical Hospital, Iasi, Romania, between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2020. The histopathological specimens were reviewed according to the WHO 2021 criteria. Analyses included clinical, imaging, pathological and surgical factors. RESULTS: The tumor recurred in 53.1% of the 81 cases within 60 months of surgery. Tumor location (p<0.000), tumor volume (p<0.010), extent of surgical resection (p<0.000) and dural sinus invasion (p<0.001) were predictive factors of recurrence. Gross total resection (Simpson grade I and II) was achieved in 59.2% of patients. Patients with the tumors located in the brain convexity and volume <26.4 cm³ had better survival rates up to recurrence. PFS showed a significant relationship between Simpson grade I-III and biopsy (p<0.000) and was statistically influenced by tumor volume and location, and dural sinus invasion. CONCLUSIONS: AMs are a heterogeneous group of tumors, and we identified posterior fossa location, volume ≥26.4 cm³, Simpson grade III and IV resection and dural sinus invasion as predictive factors for relapse and a shorter PFS. Whereas certain characteristics provide some prognostic value, future molecular characterizations of AMs are necessary, which will support the clinical decision-making process.

RESUMO

Conventional partially removable skeletal dentures are one of the most common therapeutic solutions offered to edentulous patients worldwide. The present study aims to compare the skeleton of removable dentures realized via classical techniques to that realized via modern techniques, represented by the laser sintering technique, with the comparative aspects being realized through the evaluation of atomic force microscopy (AFM). A total of 20 metal frameworks made of Co-Cr were sectioned, representing the infrastructure of partially removable skeletal dentures, developed using the classical technique versus the laser sintering technique. The infrastructures of partially removable skeletal dentures were designed for both the maxilla and the mandible, with the design of each type of denture being identical, and were developed using both techniques. The roughness values are different depending on the technological method used; for the conventional casting technique, we have higher roughness for the component elements of the partially removable skeletal denture that have more stretch, e.g., the major connector, and for the 3D laser sintering technique, lower roughness is obtained for the component elements that have a lower stretch, e.g., the clasp arms, the minor connector, or the junction between the saddles and the major connector. The clinical implications of the presence of roughness at the level of the active arms or at the level of the connector saddle junction are represented by the risk of fracture, which confers real discomfort to the patient.

RESUMO

Dental composites, through their structural diversity, represent the biomaterials frequently used in dental reconstructive therapy. The aim of our study was to observe the influence of different beverage environment conditions on seven types of obturation dental materials with different compositions. Our research focused on the surface modification analysis of the materials after the immersion in the different beverages; in this regard, we used the EDAX technique correlated with the energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF). The pH of the drinks and that of the simulated saliva solution were determined by the titrimetric method, a sodium hydroxide solution 0.1 mol/dm3 was prepared and used for the titration. An amount of 5 mL of each analyzed solution was added to 15 mL of distilled water to obtain a dilution, to which 3 drops of phenolphthalein (as a color indicator-Phenolphthalein, 3,3-Bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1(3H)-isobenzofuranone, C20H14O4 Mw: 318.32, purchased from Merck) were added for each analysis. For each solution, the experiment was repeated three times in order to obtain accurate results. The results of our study materialized into a real plea for modifying the patients' behavior in terms of diet and preferences for acidic drinks, so that their quality-of-life valence can be improved by keeping the composite materials in a long-term unalterable state on the one hand; on the other hand, systemic damage can be prevented as well.

RESUMO

In modern clinical practice, digital pathology has an essential role, being a technological necessity for the activity in the pathological anatomy laboratories. The development of information technology has majorly facilitated the management of digital images and their sharing for clinical use; the methods to analyze digital histopathological images, based on artificial intelligence techniques and specific models, quantify the required information with significantly higher consistency and precision compared to that provided by optical microscopy. In parallel, the unprecedented advances in machine learning facilitate, through the synergy of artificial intelligence and digital pathology, the possibility of diagnosis based on image analysis, previously limited only to certain specialties. Therefore, the integration of digital images into the study of pathology, combined with advanced algorithms and computer-assisted diagnostic techniques, extends the boundaries of the pathologist's vision beyond the microscopic image and allows the specialist to use and integrate his knowledge and experience adequately. We conducted a search in PubMed on the topic of digital pathology and its applications, to quantify the current state of knowledge. We found that computer-aided image analysis has a superior potential to identify, extract and quantify features in more detail compared to the human pathologist's evaluating possibilities; it performs tasks that exceed its manual capacity, and can produce new diagnostic algorithms and prediction models applicable in translational research that are able to identify new characteristics of diseases based on changes at the cellular and molecular level.

RESUMO

Thromboembolic (TE) risk scores used for atrial fibrillation (AF) patients do not include mitral annular calcification (MAC) as a potential indicator of vascular disease. This research evaluated the correlation between MAC and TE risk scores (CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc). We compared TE risk score values and clinical and echocardiographic data in patients with and without MAC. We included, prospectively, 103 patients: 40.8% with AF, 83.5% with hypertension, 30.1% with type II diabetes mellitus, 79.6% with chronic heart failure, and 7.8% with a history of stroke. We identified MAC in 50.5% of patients. The mean CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores were 2.56 ± 1.135 and 4.57 ± 1.61, respectively. In MAC patients, both scores tended to increase significantly compared with the control (2.88 ± 1.114 versus 2.24 ± 1.06, p = 0.005, and 5.21 ± 1.51 versus 3.92 ± 1.46, p < 0.001, respectively). The left ventricular ejection fraction negatively correlated with the presence of MAC (r = -0.254, p = 0.01). The presence of MAC was a risk factor for vascular disease (OR = 2.47, χ2 = 34.32, p < 0001). Conclusions: The presence of MAC is associated with greater TE risk scores and a higher risk of vascular disease. It appears that adding MAC as a vascular disease parameter to TE risk scores may have benefits for patients by improving their predictive value.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Meningiomas are the most common primary neoplasms of the central nervous system in adults, arising from the arachnoid cap cells. Thus, grade 2 meningiomas are situated on the border between benignity and malignancy. Among the many prognostic factors that have been investigated in these tumors, bone invasion is one of them. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to identify whether bone invasion influences tumor recurrence and progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with atypical meningiomas (AMs). PATIENTS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Out of 81 patients with AMs followed over a period of five years, we identified nine patients with bone invasion. We analyzed their demographic, clinical, imaging, and pathological characteristics, such as age, gender, radiological aspects, morphological features, extent of resection, recurrence rate, and PFS over a follow-up period of 60 months. Bone invasion was determined based on preoperative, surgical, and pathological reports. RESULTS: Out of the nine patients with bone invasion, four had convexity meningiomas, four had parasagittal meningiomas and one had a falcine meningioma. Regarding tumor recurrence∕progression, most patients (n=6) recurred within the first 24 months after surgery. Our study showed that the early recurrence/progression of tumor (at 12 months) correlated with extensive presence of malignancy criteria, especially with the presence of 15-18 mitoses∕10 high-power fields, as well as with large foci of spontaneous necrosis, but also with tumor bone infiltration, extensive bone lamellae destruction, and tumor infiltration of adjacent muscle with its atrophy due to tumor compression. Patients with bone invasion had a PFS of 29.3 months, compared to patients without invasion who had a higher PFS (49.3 months). Significant statistical associations were observed between bone invasion and tumor recurrence (p=0.002) and PFS (p=0.004). CONCLUSIONS: Our study emphasizes the importance of a thorough histopathological examination of the surgical specimen, which can provide significant data for the assessment of the progression of an AM [World Health Organization (WHO) grade 2] with bone invasion. AM infiltration in adjacent bone and muscle increases the rate of tumor recurrence and decreases PFS over a follow-up period of 60 months.

RESUMO

The assessment of fibrosis in chronic liver diseases using non-invasive methods is an important topic in hepatology. The aim of this study is to identify patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and advanced liver fibrosis by establishing correlations between biological/ultrasound markers and non-invasively measured liver stiffness. This study enrolled 116 patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which were evaluated clinically, biologically, and by ultrasound. Liver fibrosis was quantified by measuring liver stiffness by shear wave elastography (SWE). Multiple correlation analysis of predictors of liver fibrosis identified a number of clinical, biological, and ultrasound parameters (BMI, blood glucose, albumin, platelet count, portal vein diameter, bipolar spleen diameter) that are associated with advanced liver fibrosis in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The correlations between the degree of liver fibrosis and the risk values of some serological and ultrasound markers obtained in our study could be useful in clinical practice for the identification of advanced fibrosis in patients with NAFLD.

RESUMO

Aims and Objectives: To investigate the trends in access to dental services among adults from the N-E region of Romania and to evaluate the factors that influence access to dental care. Material and Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was used to evaluate the access and utilization of dental care among a sample of adults. We collected data on their demographic characteristics, their type of medical insurance, their monthly income, the type of dental office they visited, their reasons for choosing a certain type of dentist office, and their oral hygiene habits. It was found that their financial status determined by the occupation of the individual, as well as their monthly income, influenced their access to medical services. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0. Results: Of a total of 696 participants, 55.6% were female, 83.3% were from urban areas, 42.1% were retired, 62.3% of the subjects utilized dental emergency services, and 67.9% of the subjects self-funded their treatment. The reasons for women not attending dental offices included costs (24.3%) and dental fear (9.8%), while men's reasons were high costs (26.4%) and lack of time (5.9%). Significant differences were recorded between gender and reasons for visiting the dentist (p = 0.018), payment for dental services (p = 0.009), and preferred clinic (p = 0.010). In relation to occupation, there were significant differences for most of the variables evaluated (reasons to visit a dentist, payment for dental services, preferred dental clinic, self-rated oral health, etc.). Conclusions: Gender, occupation, and monthly income levels were found to influence access to dental medicine services of Romanians in the N-E region. Dental services were frequently accessed for emergency reasons. Dental services were found to be paid for by state insurance for those with low monthly incomes and self-funded for those with higher monthly incomes.

RESUMO

Physiological/normal tooth mobility may be defined as the slight displacement of the clinical crown of a tooth, which is allowed by the resilience of an intact and healthy periodontium, under the application of a moderate force. The factors influencing the success and longevity of dental splinting are the type of material used for the splint, the type of composite resin, the number and location of the dental units included for splinting (maxillary or mandibular arch). In periodontology, the term 'splint' is defined as the joining of two or more teeth into a rigid unit through restorations or fixed or removable devices. The purpose of using periodontal splints for tooth immobilization is to provide a period of rest in the areas where the healing process has begun and to allow normal functioning there where the tissues alone would not be able to withstand occlusal forces. The aim of the present study was to evaluate comparatively, by means of energy dispersive electron spectrometry (EDX), the chemical composition in the case of in vitro samples that structurally reproduce direct periodontal immobilization systems using fiberglass strips and fluid composite resins. The differences in the chemical composition of the investigated materials can influence their physiochemical properties, but also their biological and toxicological reliability. Elements such as C, O, Al, Si and Ba were identified as common elements among the resins tested in the present study. The only difference in terms of the component elements was found in the case of the fluid composite Clearfil Majesty ES Flow, which, apart from the elements mentioned, also presented Co in its structure.

RESUMO

The paper analyzes the evolution of COVID-19 cases in Romanian counties over a period of 10 months, to highlight possible similarities that may contribute to a better understanding of the spreading pattern. The study uses the numbers of active cases for each county in Romania, as well as Bucharest and the whole country, reported daily by the Romanian Ministry of Health (https://datelazi.ro) between April 2nd, 2020 and January 25th, 2021. We compared the disease's evolution in Suceava county (the first outbreak of spread) with other counties in Romania in order to highlight the gaps between them. We calculated the cross-correlations between counties, interpreted as time series. The recorded lags varied between 1-15 days, the most counties having a lag of 6-7 days compared with Suceava. Therefore, on long term there are no important discrepancies between the regions in Romania regarding the evolution of the disease, which shows that the intervention efforts of the medical staff were uniform in efficiency. The existence of a lag of only one day between Suceava and the whole country shows that on long term, even in this county the situation is not very discrepant, belonging to the general evolution.

RESUMO

Over recent years, studies have shown that in patients with left-sided heart failure, arterial hypertension, and acute coronary syndrome, hyponatremia is a negative prognostic factor. In this context, there is raising interest in the association between hyponatremia and pulmonary embolism (PE). This retrospective cohort study includes 404 consecutive patients with confirmed acute nonfatal pulmonary embolism divided into four groups according to their sodium fluctuation pattern. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality and determining the recurrence rate among patients with nonfatal PE using serum sodium levels as a continuous variable. Patients with acquired and persistent hyponatremia had a significantly higher rate of mortality rate than those in the normonatremia group (12.8% and 40.4%, OR- 7.206, CI: 2.383-21.791, p = 0.000 and OR-33.250, CI: 11.521-95.960, p = 0.000 vs. 2%, p < 0.001, respectively). Mean survival time decreases from 23.624 months (95% CI: (23.295-23.953)) in the normonatremia group to 16.426 months (95% CI: (13.17-19.134)) in the persistent hyponatremia group, statistically significant (p = 0.000). The mean survival time for all patients was 22.441 months (95% CI: (21.930-22.951)). The highest recurrence rate was recorded at 12 and 24 months in the acquired hyponatremia group (16.7% and 14.1%, respectively). Serum sodium determination is a simple and cost-effective approach in evaluating the short and long-term prognosis in patients with acute PE.

RESUMO

Vestibular sensorial input is essential for psychomotor development of the very small children. In consequence, possible vestibular impairment induced by cochlear implantation in deaf children could affect the balance and walking learning process. Some of cochlear implanted children can present congenital vestibular deficit. The anatomical and embryological relation between auditory and vestibular system explains why congenital neurosensorial hearing loss may associate vestibular impairment. The cochlear implant surgery presents a vestibular lesion risk. Bilateral vestibulopathy, as it appears in early childhood, has a poor prognosis for the psychomotor and cognitive development. Even probably rare, bilateral vestibulopathy induced by simultaneous bilateral cochlear implantation can delay the acquisition of motor skills. This pathology can be avoided by an appropriate surgical indication related to the vestibular preoperative status. This study reports the vestibular saccular functional modifications after the cochlear implantation in children. The cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMPs) were performed in children before and after the cochlear implantation. Since previous studies report different vestibular impairment related to the portelectrode insertion approach, another objective of our study was to assess the saccular postoperative status depending of the insertion by cochleostomy (CO) or through the round window (RW). We performed cVEMPs for 80 patients (135 cochlear implanted ears) before and after cochlear implantation. We have detected preoperative saccular areflexia in 33 (24.4%) ears. In the group of 102 (75.6%) ears with preoperative normal saccular function, 72 (70.6%) ears preserved the cVEMP response after the surgery, while in 30 (29.4%) ears the cVEMP response was lost. Reporting our findings to the portelectrode insertion method, we found normal saccular function in 73.3% of the cochlear implanted ears by RW surgical approach and in 68.42% ears by CO approach. These results suggest that the RW portelectrode insertion is the recommended strategy in order to avoid the saccular vestibular impairment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Parasagittal and falcine meningiomas are still a challenge in terms of surgical resection. Although maximal safe resection is the main therapeutic approach, numerous postoperative complications can still occur depending on the locations of these tumors. Moreover, previous studies have reported that parasagittal meningiomas have a higher recurrence rate than meningiomas with other locations. PATIENTS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 21 patients with parasagittal and falcine atypical meningiomas [World Health Organization (WHO) grade II], nine of whom had their superior sagittal sinus (SSS) invaded by the tumor. We reviewed the demographic information, operative notes, pathological reports, and clinical and imagistic follow-up reports of each patient over a 5-year time span. RESULTS: All the patients were surgically treated, and the tumor removal was grade II according to Simpson's grading system in 47.6% and grade III in 19% of the cases. The SSS was invaded in 42.9% of the patients. No immediate mortality or morbidity was revealed by our study. Tumor recurrence/progression documented on postoperative imaging amounted to 14.3% and 19%, 12 and 24 months after surgery, respectively. Furthermore, 36, 48 and 60 months after the surgery, the recurrence rate remained the same, namely in 9.5% of the cases. The recurrence was higher in patients with SSS invasion than in patients with no SSS invasion. The tumor recurrence was slightly more predominant in women, i.e., 6% higher than in the male group. CONCLUSIONS: In our group of patients with parasagittal and falcine meningiomas, we report a 47.6% Simpson II resection rate and 19% Simpson III resection rate associated with a very low complication rate and no immediately postoperative morbidity and mortality, compared to more aggressive techniques. The recurrence of parasagittal meningiomas predominated after grade III and IV Simpson resection and dural sinus invasion was a negative predictive factor for recurrence. Therefore, the surgery of parasagittal and falcine meningiomas is beneficial, both for tumor control, but also for improving neurological outcome. Aggressive meningioma resection should be balanced with the increased neurosurgical risk.

RESUMO

The acute gastroenteritis is a population health problem, frequently met everywhere in the world. In Romania, for certain etiologies the reporting is compulsory. Also, these infections are reported in the TESSy system, too (The European Surveillance System). In this context, antibiotics therapy and antibiotics resistance have a particular importance. The study aim was to assess the prevalence of bacterial pathogens involved in the etiology of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) on the Iasi County, Romania and the surrounding areas and the determination of the profile of resistance to the antibiotics for the identified agents. Material and methods: 72 strains of isolated and identified bacterial agents involved in the acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in the case of children (0-14 years), with the exception of the Campylobacter spp., in the municipality of Iasi and its surrounding areas were studied in 2012, during the surveillance period of AGE (May to October). Results: The most frequent has been the Salmonella spp. (63.9%) from which the S. enterica Thyphimurium in 21 cases (29.2%) and S. enteritidis in 7 cases (9.7%), followed by E. coli (20.8%) from which E. coli O:127 in 3 cases (4.2%), Shigella sonnei S (13.9%) and Yersinia enterocolitica (1.4%). In the case of the children from the group of 0-1 year, the Salmonella enterica Thyphimurium has been the pathogenic agent most frequently encountered (6 cases 29.2%), followed by Salmonella Colindale, S. enteritidis, Shigella sonnei S, E. coli O:127 registered with a frequency of 5.6%. The antibiotic resistance rates are high in the case of ampicillin (43.1%), tetracycline (31.9%), amoxicillin clavulanic acid (26.4%), trimethoprim/ sulfametoxazole (22.2%), sulfonamides (11.1%). Conclusions: The antibiotic resistance rates are high in the case of ampicillin, tetracycline, amoxicillin clavulanic acid, trimethoprim/ sulfametoxazole, sulfonamides.

RESUMO

AIM: was to determine the etiological risk factors and predictors of crossbite' treatment at children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 270 cases with crossbites and 255 controls with other malocclusions were uniformly evaluated. The crossbites cases were divided in group I (anterior crossbite), group II (posterior crossbite) and group III (anterior and posterior crossbites) and were compared between them per Angle Class malocclusions, dysfunctional and dental causes, associations with other discrepancies, as well by need and types of treatment. Binary logistic regression was used to find risk factors and predictors. RESULTS: The mean age of cases was 10.25?2.770 years. There were found significant differences between the groups of crossbites cases (p<0.05). There were identified risk factors (non-attrition of deciduous teeth, Angle Class II malocclusion and permanent teeth extraction) and protective factors of the crossbite (the tooth decay of deciduous teeth, eruption anomalies and tongue-thrust swallowing). There were found predictors for early corrective treatment (sucking habit, non-attrition and buds crowding) with a precision of 78.5%; for normal treatment (mouth breathing and buds crowding) with a precision of 71.5%; for late treatment (Angle Class III malocclusion, dental crowding and TMJ disorders) with a precision of 83.0%; for maxillary expansion (eruption anomalies and buds crowding) with a precision of 77.0%; for oral associated surgery (macrodontia and TMJ disorders) with a precision of 75.9% (HL test, p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The risk factors were dental furthermore; the predictors of treatment were adequate with dentition, etiology and disorders at age identification, suggesting the contribution of practitioners in intercepting this orthodontic emergency.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: The aim of study was to assess some population characteristics in children of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) admitted in a regional pediatric hospital. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For the present transversal descriptive study we considered a group of subjects hospitalized for AGE in 2008-2013 (2013--only 6 months) in "Sf. Maria" Emergency Hospital for Children Iasi, Romania. Consultations in the Emergency Unit of this hospital did not take into consideration. RESULTS: Number of AGE cases admitted to "St. Maria" Emergency Hospital for Children Iasi between 2008 and 2013 has seen a steady decline. Male subjects are better represented (54.1%); largest age group 1-4 years, with 1,827 cases, immediately followed by group 0-1 year (1789 cases); together, the two-age groups account for 93.1% of admissions for AGE. Distribution of cases by seasons showed balanced values, with higher percentages in summer (29.7%) and spring (25.5%). The number of cases is relatively constant and lower in winter, affecting predominantly younger groups (0-5 years) compared to the summer when cases aged 5 to 14 years were admitted more frequent. Most cases presented at admission vomiting (41.2%) and fever (40.7%); the presence of bacterial flora was identified in 82.2% of stool specimens, and blood in 13.4% of cases. CONCLUSIONS: A higher number of education measures should be implemented in urban and rural areas in order todecrease the contamination with pathogenic agents involved in infectious acute gas- troenteritis in children.

RESUMO

AIM: To asses the current demographic tendencies of the carioactivity, in Iasi area, especially ECC and S-ECC. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Study group included 500 subjects (276 girls and 224 boys), 3-6 years of age, 70% urban and 30% rural. The oro-dental evaluation was achieved through clinical investigation, based on criteria and markers recommended by WHO, the estimation of the indices of the caries prevalence: caod, cao, SIC, ICDAS, psychological assessment and sociological investigation using interviews and questionnaires. Recorded data were used for statistical analysis in SPSS 17 trial, in visual FOX-PRO9. RESULTS: The hole assessment showed a low caries risk (83.3%), compared to the values of the medium caries risk (9.2%), and of the high caries risk (7.5%). In term of clinic variability, the normal carial pattern is frequent, followed by atypical carial patterns, ECC and S-ECC, with differences between genders (boys - 1.91, girls - 1.99). In relation to the socio-economic level of the family, the cao index varies: cao-1--high socio-economic level, cao-1.46--medium socio-economic level, cao2.87--low socio-economic level. CONCLUSIONS: The values of the epidemiologic indices, showed a variability of the carioactivity of the temporary dentition, with growth of the atipical carial patterns, ECC and SECC. The above mentioned aspects require to reconsider the view points on temporary dentition and the promotion of an educational and prevention programme.

RESUMO

Based on the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors analysis, the principal component analysis has the purpose to identify the subspace of the main components from a set of parameters, which are enough to characterize the whole set of parameters. Interpreting the data for analysis as a cloud of points, we find through geometrical transformations the directions where the cloud's dispersion is maximal--the lines that pass through the cloud's center of weight and have a maximal density of points around them (by defining an appropriate criteria function and its minimization. This method can be successfully used in order to simplify the statistical analysis on questionnaires--because it helps us to select from a set of items only the most relevant ones, which cover the variations of the whole set of data. For instance, in the presented sample we started from a questionnaire with 28 items and, applying the principal component analysis we identified 7 principal components--or main items--fact that simplifies significantly the further data statistical analysis.
