RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the application of community mental health nursing (CMHN) model using an intervention of nursing standard care and cognitive behavioral therapy on life skills and work productivity for the adult population with schizophrenia. METHOD: This study was an experimental study with an equivalent control group using randomly allocated 193 participants to either the intervention or control group at community health center in Cipayung, Jakarta. The intervention comprised in a 4-month cognitive behavioral therapy that was implemented by 33 community psychiatric nurse staff to improve the life skills and work productivity of people with schizophrenia. The instruments used to evaluate the intervention were the Indonesian version of the life skill profile (LSP) questionnaire and the work productivity and activity impairment scale (WPAI). The data analysis used a paired t-test. RESULTS: The findings show that there was a significant difference in scores on the LSP before and after the implementation in the intervention group (19.94 ± 1.27 and 38.83 ± 9.32) with p < .001 and the control group (26.93 ± 12.50 and 30.89 ± 12.41) with p = .002. The findings also show that there was a significant difference of WPAI before and after the implementation for the intervention group (2.21 ± 1.12 and 3.82 ± 1.28) with p < .05 compared with the control group (1.91 ± 1.42 and 2.19 ± 1.58) with p = .188. CONCLUSIONS: CMHN models using basic community mental health nursing interventions can be used to improve life skills and work productivity of people with schizophrenia so this could be a skill to strengthen the ability to live in the community in this type of patients.

Hospitalization requires children to adapt to various difficult conditions, such as treatments, health personnel, and separation from their families, especially their parents. Separation from parents often causes significant emotional changes in children like anxiety, which could trigger the trauma of hospitalization in both the short and long terms. The study used a qualitative research method with a descriptive phenomenology study approach. It was conducted in the Child Care Room with 11 participants. Data analysis was performed using Creswell thematic analysis. The study produced three themes: i) nurses support the presence of parents during children's hospitalization; ii) parental presence is the main source of coping for children during hospitalization; iii) Parents have a role in fulfilling the children's psychological needs during hospitalization.

RESUMO

Exploration of posttraumatic growth (PTG) experiences in adolescent survivors of earthquakes, tsunamis, or liquefaction are needed by nurses to maximize the potential for recovery and growth of adolescents from trauma after natural disasters. The study used a qualitative method with a descriptive phenomenology approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 16 adolescent survivors and were analyzed using the Colaizzi method. The results of this study have two main themes: trauma becoming the basis for realizing the meaning of life and escaping from disaster as a second chance to live better. PTG is a positive change that needs to be pursued. Escaping from disaster and realizing the meaning of life are the key points to get success in pursuing PTG to live a better life. In addition, support from mental health nurses through cognitive therapy (CT) and acceptance commitment therapy (ACT) are needed to increase the PTG.

Suicide is one of the psychiatric emergencies that require comprehensive care because individuals are at risk of endangering themselves, others and the surrounding. Suicide in Indonesia is increasing. Families have a major role in caring for clients and preventing suicide but family burdens have not been studied profoundly. The aim of the study was to get an overview of family experience of caring for clients with suicide risk. The research design was qualitative with descriptive phenomenology approach involving six participants. Data was collected by in depth interview and analyzed using Colaizzi method. The results of the study found five themes; suicide attempts is a complex burden for families, behavioral changes as a suicide sign, concern as a form of family and community support, family perceptions about the causes and consequences of attempted suicide and coping strategies of families overcoming the impact of attempted suicide. The results of the study recommend that the family as the front social unit of suicide prevention can be more sensitive to changes in the behavior of clients and nurses as counselors can provide interventions to improve the mental health status of clients and families such as health education, family psycoeducation therapy, stress management and self help group. The conclusion that can be drawn from the five themes above is the burden of the family who provide caring for the client with the risk of suicide is heavier when the family is unable to recognize the client's suicide signs so there is a need for a support system and constructive coping
