This article is the result of a master's thesis, defended by the Postgraduate Program in Regional Development at UNISC, which aimed to analyze the representation of family farmers by the Union of Family Farmers Workers (STR), linked to the Federation of Agricultural Workers in Rio Grande do Sul (FETAG), and by the Rural Union, linked to the Federation of Agriculture of Rio Grande do Sul (FARSUL). In order to carry out the research, the region of Santa Cruz do Sul was delimited, composed of eight municipalities, whose economy is linked to the production of tobacco, carried out in a family farming regime. Bearing in mind that the two entities represent divergent conceptions about the meaning of rural development, dialectics was chosen as a method of approach, since the inherent contradictions in the representation of family farmers by the two union fronts in the region are addressed. It was concluded that the STR has greater legitimacy in the representation of family farmers in the region, in view of its historical trajectory, its purposes and its performance in defense of the needs and challenges of the Family Agriculture segment.(AU)

RESUMO

Amyloid-ß (Aß) aggregation and neuroinflammation are consistent features in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and strong candidates for the initiation of neurodegeneration. S100B is one of the most abundant proinflammatory proteins that is chronically up-regulated in AD and is found associated with senile plaques. This recognized biomarker for brain distress may, thus, play roles in amyloid aggregation which remain to be determined. We report a novel role for the neuronal S100B protein as suppressor of Aß42 aggregation and toxicity. We determined the structural details of the interaction between monomeric Aß42 and S100B, which is favored by calcium binding to S100B, possibly involving conformational switching of disordered Aß42 into an α-helical conformer, which locks aggregation. From nuclear magnetic resonance experiments, we show that this dynamic interaction occurs at a promiscuous peptide-binding region within the interfacial cleft of the S100B homodimer. This physical interaction is coupled to a functional role in the inhibition of Aß42 aggregation and toxicity and is tuned by calcium binding to S100B. S100B delays the onset of Aß42 aggregation by interacting with Aß42 monomers inhibiting primary nucleation, and the calcium-bound state substantially affects secondary nucleation by inhibiting fibril surface-catalyzed reactions through S100B binding to growing Aß42 oligomers and fibrils. S100B protects cells from Aß42-mediated toxicity, rescuing cell viability and decreasing apoptosis induced by Aß42 in cell cultures. Together, our findings suggest that molecular targeting of S100B could be translated into development of novel approaches to ameliorate AD neurodegeneration.

RESUMO

Cardiovascular disease is the first cause of death and disease and one of the leading causes of disability in developed countries. The prevalence of this disease is expected to increase in coming years although the death rate may be lower due to better treatment. To present the design and development of a technology solution for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease in asymptomatic patients. The system aims to raise the population's awareness of the importance of adopting healthy heart habits by using self-feedback techniques. A series of sensors which makes it possible to detect cardiovascular risk factors in asymptomatic patients were used. These sensors enable evaluation of heart rate, blood pressure, SpO2 -oxygen saturation in blood- and body temperature. This work has developed a modular solution centred on four parts: iOS app, sensors, server and web. The CoreBluetooth library, which carries out Bluetooth 4.0 communication, was used for the connection between the app and the sensors. The data files are stored on the iPad and the server by using CoreData and SQL mechanisms. The system was validated with 20 healthy volunteers and 10 patients with established structural heart disease. Once the samples had been obtained, a comparison of all the significant data was run, in addition to a statistical analysis. The result of this calculation was a total of 32 cases of first level significance correlations (p < 0.01), for example, the inverse relationship between the daily step count and high blood pressure (p = 0.008) and 24 s level cases (p < 0.05) such as the significant correlation between risk and age (p = 0.013). The system designed in this paper has made it possible to create an application capable of collecting data on cardiovascular risk factors through a sensor system that measures physiological variables and records physical activity and diet.

RESUMO

AIM: To obtain the normal ranges for 3D echocardiography (3DE) measurement of left ventricular (LV) volumes, function, and strain from a large group of healthy volunteers. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 440 (mean age: 45 ± 13 years) out of the 734 healthy subjects enrolled at 22 collaborating institutions of the Normal Reference Ranges for Echocardiography (NORRE) study had good-quality 3DE data sets that have been analysed with a vendor-independent software package allowing homogeneous measurements regardless of the echocardiographic machine used to acquire the data sets. Upper limits of LV end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes were larger in men (97 and 42 mL/m2) than in women (82 and 35 mL/m2; P < 0.0001). Conversely, lower limits of LV ejection fraction were higher in women than in men (51% vs. 50%; P < 0.01). Similarly, all strain components were higher in women than in men. Lower range was -18.6% in men and -19.5% in women for 3D longitudinal strain, -27.0% and -27.6% for 3D circumferential strain, -33.2% and -34.4% for 3D tangential strain and 38.8% and 40.7% for 3D radial strain, respectively. LV volumes decreased with age in both genders (P < 0.0001), whereas LV ejection fraction increased with age only in men. Among 3DE LV strain components, the only one, which did not change with age was longitudinal strain. CONCLUSION: The NORRE study provides applicable 3D echocardiographic reference ranges for LV function assessment. Our data highlight the importance of age- and gender-specific reference values for both LV volumes and strain.
