RESUMO

From 1980 to 1989, 8 cesarean sections were performed on an elective basis in 5 mares. Four mares had partially obstructed pelvic canals; 2 of these mares had previously lost foals because of dystocia. Cervical adhesions that might obstruct passage of the fetus through the pelvic canal was suspected in the fifth mare. Cesarean section was performed prior to mares entering the first stage of labor. Readiness for birth was estimated by development of the mare's mammary gland and the presence of colostrum in the udder. A ventral midline celiotomy provided excellent exposure and healed without complications in all instances. Eight viable foals were produced. One foal developed bacterial pneumonia and septicemia after surgery and died. Follow-up evaluation of the 7 foals discharged from the hospital failed to reveal complications associated with elective cesarean section. All mares survived the procedure. Fetal membranes were retained for up to 72 hours following surgery; however, systemic complications secondary to retained placenta did not develop. Three mares were bred subsequent to elective cesarean sections, with each mare conceiving the year following surgery. Three foals were produced by 1 mare and 2 foals have been produced by another mare by elective cesarean sections.

RESUMO

A demonstration cardiovascular evaluation and exercise testing program was assessed for feasibility, cost, and accuracy. More than 1,800 people were examined in three years. The conditions of as many as 55 people per day were examined at a cost of $60 to $70 each. Abnormalities uncovered were similar to those observed in other studies. The program was considered successful in rendering services conveniently at low cost and with accuracy.

RESUMO

Bovine Factor V disociated non-enzymatically to 276 000 dalton, whereas, the enzymatic activation produced Factor Va of 213 500 daltons. The disociated form, Factor Vd, was not an enzyme substrate for conversion to Factor Va. Factors V and Va sedimented in a density zone of 1.19 g/ml, and Factor Vd in 1.17 g/ml, in sucrose gradient centrifugation. Only a neutral lipid in a 7.2% yield could be extracted from Factor Va which had been isolated in a 4500-fold purification.

RESUMO

Ninety-six Macaca mulatta were exposed to aerosol particles containing Pasteurella tularensis. Four different aerosols were employed that contained particle size distributions with median diameters of 2.1, 7.5, 12.5, or 24.0 mum. Size distributions were calculated only for those particles observed by phase microscope to contain organisms. Animals exposed to particles whose median diameters were either 2.1 or 7.5 mum were all infected and showed extensive infection of the lower respiratory tract, evidenced by large patches of consolidation with many necrotic foci on the surface. Death occurred in these animals 4 to 8 days after exposure. Monkeys exposed to 12.5- or 24.0-mum median diameter particles presented involvement of the cervical and mandibular lymph nodes, evidenced by swelling and abscess formation. Thirty-eight of the 45 animals in this group were infected. Those animals succumbing to the disease died from 8 to 21 days after exposure. The respiratory LD(50) values increased from 14 to 4,447 cells as the median diameter was raised from 2.1 to 24.0 mum.
