Large acetabular bone defects are challenging in hip revision surgery. Clinical assessment is crucial to evaluate modern technologies in surgical reconstruction. We aimed to better understand the bone remodeling that occurs following acetabular reconstruction. Our objectives were: (1) To characterize changes in the shape of the pelvis by studying sequential computed tomography (CT) scans collected immediately and 1-year postoperatively and (2) to identify which part of the pelvis is most susceptible to remodeling. We used the CT scans taken at two timepoints, of 24 patients with acetabular bone defects classified as Paprosky IIIB, treated with three-dimensional (3D)-printed custom-made acetabular implants. Segmented 3D models of the bony pelvis were co-registered using three different techniques. A global co-registration of the full pelvis was conducted, followed by the co-registration of the innominate bone and then ilium only, on the ipsilateral reconstructed side. The relative movements of the ilium, ischium, and pubis were analyzed from visual inspection and using co-registration metrics (root mean square error and intersection over union). No bone remodeling was found in 14/24 patients (58%). The co-registration of the innominate bone indicated bone remodeling in five cases (21%), while the remaining five cases (21%) presented remodeling in the global co-registration but not the innominate bone co-registration, suggestive of changes occurring at the sacroiliac joint. Changes in the pelvic shape were greatest at the pubis and ischium. Bone remodeling may occur in complex cases of Paprosky type IIIB defects, after acetabular reconstruction (occurrence of 21%, 5/24 cases). Surgeons and engineers should consider this when monitoring implant migration.

Background: Recent studies underscore the intricate relationship between cognitive and motor impairments in Multiple Sclerosis (MS), often exacerbated by CNS damage compromising neural connections. These cognitive-motor deficits contribute to reduced efficiency in daily activities and heightened risks of falls and accidents. The combination of challenging cognitive-motor training in a more ecological setting could improve cognitive functions in people with MS (PwMS). Objective: This study aims to compare the impact of dynamic cognitive-motor training versus computer-based cognitive training on overall cognitive efficiency in PwMS. Methods: Thirty-eight PwMS were recruited through the neurorehabilitation services of an Institute of research and health. Twenty-four participants were randomly assigned to the Cognitive-Motor group (CMg) and Cognitive Therapy group (CTg). Participants underwent three training sessions per week for four weeks, each lasting 50 min. The primary outcome was a comprehensive cognitive assessment using the Cognitive Impairment Index (CII), and the secondary outcomes were the Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life Questionnaire MSQOL-54 and the Stroop Color Word Interference Test (SCWT). Results: Significant differences in the CII scores across T0, T1, and T2, as indicated by Friedman's test (χ2(2) = 14.558, p = .001), were found in the CMg. A significant difference in the change in health subscale of the MSQOL-54 was observed when comparing the groups across T0, T1, and T2 (χ2(2) = 6.059, p = .048). There were also statistically significant differences for the emotional well-being (χ2(2) = 7.581, p = .023) and health distress (χ2(2) = 11.902, p = .003) subscales. Post hoc analysis showed a statistically significant improvement in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) for the former at T1 vs. T0 (Z = -2.502, p = .012 and for the latter at T2 vs. T0 (Z = -2.670, p = .008), respectively. Conclusions: Our results support the combination of cognitive-motor training to enhance cognitive functional outcomes and quality of life compared to computer-based cognitive training in PwMS.

In revision total hip arthroplasty, achieving robust fixation is difficult and implant movement may occur over time. Bone may also rearrange around the implant as a result of mechanical loading, making the measurement of migration challenging. The study aimed to quantify changes in bone shape and implant position 1 year following acetabular reconstruction using custom three-dimensional-printed cups. This observational retrospective cohort study involved 23 patients with Paprosky type IIIB defects. Postop computed tomography scans taken within 1 week of surgery and at 1-year postsurgery were co-registered and analyzed. Three co-registration strategies were implemented including bone-to-bone and implant-to-implant. (1) Co-registration of the ipsilateral innominate bone (diseased anatomy) was used to measure changes in implant position. (2) Co-registration of the implant was carried out to quantify changes in the ipsilateral innominate bone shape. (3) Co-registration of the contralateral innominate bone (nondiseased anatomy) was performed to measure changes in the ipsilateral innominate bone shape and implant position. The median centroid distances (interquartile range [IQR]) were 2.3 mm (IQR: 3.7-1.7 mm) for changes in implant position, 2.4 mm (IQR: 3.6-1.6 mm) for changes in ipsilateral innominate bone shape, and 3.7 mm (IQR: 4.6-3.5 mm) for changes in ipsilateral innominate bone shape and implant position. Following acetabular reconstruction, implant movements and periprosthetic bone remodeling are physiological and of a similar extent. Surgeons and engineers should consider this when performing implant monitoring in these patients.

BACKGROUND: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory, demyelinating, degenerative disease of the central nervous system and the second most frequent cause of permanent disability in young adults. One of the most common issues concerns the ability to perform postural and gait tasks while simultaneously completing a cognitive task (namely, dual-task DT). AIM: Assessing cognitive-motor dual-task training effectiveness in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS) for dynamic gait quality when walking on straight, curved, and blindfolded paths. DESIGN: Two-arm single-blind randomized controlled trial. Follow-up at 8 weeks. SETTING: Neurorehabilitation Hospital. POPULATION: A sample of 42 PwMS aged 28-71, with a score of 4.00±1.52 on the Expanded Disability Status Scale were recruited. METHODS: Participants were randomized in conventional (CTg) neurorehabilitation and dual-task training (DTg) groups and received 12 sessions, 3 days/week/4 weeks. They were assessed at baseline (T0), after the treatment (T1), and 8 weeks after the end of the treatment (T2) through Mini-BESTest, Tinetti Performance Oriented Mobility Assessment, Modified Barthel Index, and a set of spatiotemporal parameters and gait quality indices related to stability, symmetry, and smoothness of gait extracted from initial measurement units (IMUs) data during the execution of the 10-meter Walk Test (10mWT), the Figure-of-8 Walk Test (Fo8WT) and the Fukuda Stepping Test (FST). RESULTS: Thirty-one PwMS completed the trial at T2. Significant improvement within subjects was found in Mini-BESTest scores for DTg from T0 to T1. The IMU-based assessment indicated significant differences in stability (P<0.01) and smoothness (P<0.05) measures between CTg and DTg during 10mWT and Fo8WT. Substantial improvements (P<0.017) were also found in the inter-session comparison, primarily for DTg, particularly for stability, symmetry, and smoothness measures. CONCLUSIONS: This study supports the effectiveness of DT in promoting dynamic motor abilities in PwMS. CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT: Cognitive-motor DT implemented into the neurorehabilitation conventional program could be a useful strategy for gait and balance rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Severe acquired brain injury (sABI) encompasses a range of neurological impairments. Visual dysfunction, particularly homonymous visual field defects (HVFDs) and homonymous hemianopia (HH), commonly afflicts sABI survivors, affecting their cognitive and motor rehabilitation. This study presents the FunctionaL Assessment Scale of Hemianopia (FLASH), developed to analyze the most common postural behaviors exhibited by sABI patients with hemianopia during activities of daily living. A comparison to traditional static automated perimetry for diagnosing visual field deficits (VFDs) to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the FLASH was used. Additionally, this study also aimed to assess its reliability. METHODS: Fifty-six patients (25 F, 31 M, mean age 60.59 ± 14.53) with strokes in the sub-acute phase (<6 months from the onset) were assessed with both FLASH and a Humphrey Field Analyzer. RESULTS: After removing two items found to be less reliable than others, FLASH showed high sensitivity (81%) and specificity (77%) when compared to static automated perimetry. Inter-rater reliability was also high, with an intra-class correlation coefficient of 0.954, as well as the internal consistency computed by Cronbach's alpha, equal to 0.874. CONCLUSION: FLASH could offer a valuable and cost-effective screening tool for VFD in sABI patients during neurorehabilitation, with potential implications for healthcare cost reduction.

The assessment of three-dimensional bony defects is important to inform the surgical planning of hip reconstruction. Mirroring of the contralateral side has been previously used to measure the hip center of rotation (CoR). However, the contralateral side may not be useful when diseased or replaced. Statistical Shape Models (SSMs) can aid reconstruction of patient anatomy. Previous studies have been limited to computational models only or small patient cohorts. We used SSM as a tool to help derive landmarks that are often absent in hip joints of patients with large acetabular defects. Our aim was to compare the reconstructed pelvis with patients who have previously undergone hip revision. This retrospective cohort study involved 38 patients with Paprosky type IIIB defects. An SSM was built on 50 healthy pelvises and used to virtually reconstruct the native pelvic morphology for all cases. The outcome measures were the difference in CoR for (1) SSM versus diseased hip, (2) SSM versus plan, and (3) SSM versus contralateral healthy hip. The median differences in CoR were 31.17 mm (interquartile range [IQR]: 43.80-19.87 mm), 8.53 mm (IQR: 12.76-5.74 mm), and 7.84 mm (IQR: 10.13-5.13 mm), respectively. No statistical difference (p > 0.05) was found between the SSM versus plan and the SSM versus contralateral CoRs. Our findings show that the SSM model can be used to reconstruct the absent bony landmarks of patients with significant lysis regardless of the defect severity, hence aiding the surgical planning of hip reconstruction and implant design.

Neurorehabilitation research in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) showed how vestibular rehabilitation (VR) treatments positively affect concussion-related symptoms, but no studies have been carried out in patients with severe TBI (sTBI) during post-acute intensive neurorehabilitation. We aimed at testing this effect by combining sensor-based gait analysis and clinical scales assessment. We hypothesized that integrating VR in post-acute neurorehabilitation training might improve gait quality and activity of daily living (ADL) in sTBI patients. A two-arm, single-blind randomized controlled trial with 8 weeks of follow-up was performed including thirty sTBI inpatients that underwent an 8-week rehabilitation program including either a VR or a conventional program. Gait quality parameters were obtained using body-mounted magneto-inertial sensors during instrumented linear and curvilinear walking tests. A 4X2 mixed model ANOVA was used to investigate session−group interactions and main effects. Patients undergoing VR exhibited improvements in ADL, showing early improvements in clinical scores. Sensor-based assessment of curvilinear pathways highlighted significant VR-related improvements in gait smoothness over time (p < 0.05), whereas both treatments exhibited distinct improvements in gait quality. Integrating VR in conventional neurorehabilitation is a suitable strategy to improve gait smoothness and ADL in sTBI patients. Instrumented protocols are further promoted as an additional measure to quantify the efficacy of neurorehabilitation treatments.

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) represents one of the most common subtypes of urinary incontinence (UI) reported by women. Studies have shown an association of SUI with nonspecific low back pain (NSLBP). The primary aim of the present study was to explore the long-term effects of a combined treatment of manual techniques and pelvic floor muscle (PFM) training in women suffering from SUI associated with NSLBP. The secondary aim was to evaluate which manual approach combined with PFM rehabilitation is more effective in improving symptoms related to SUI and in reducing pain perception related to NSLBP. Twenty-six patients suffering from SUI associated with chronic NSLBP were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the postural rehabilitation group (PRg) or the spinal mobilization group (SMg). Both groups performed a manual approach combined with PFM rehabilitation. All patients were evaluated before the treatment (T0), after 10 sessions (T1) and after 30 days from the end of the treatment (T2). The results showed an improvement in both groups in all of the investigated outcomes. Combining manual therapy and PFM training within the same therapy session may be useful for improving both SUI and NSLBP and increasing the quality of life of women suffering from SUI associated with NSLBP.

Patients with advanced cancer undergoing chest wall resection may require reconstruction. Currently, rib prostheses are created by segmenting computed tomography images, which is time-consuming and labour intensive. The aim was to optimise the production of digital rib models based on a patient's age, weight, height and gender. A statistical shape model of human ribs was created and used to synthetise rib models, which were compared to the ones produced by segmentation and mirroring. The segmentation took 11.56±1.60 min compared to 0.027 ±0.009 min using the new technique. The average mesh error between the mirroring technique and segmentation was 0.58±0.25 mm (right ribs), and 0.87±0.18 mm (left ribs), compared to 1.37±0.66 mm ( ) and 1.68 ±0.77 mm ( ), respectively, for the new technique. The new technique is promising for the efficiency and ease-of-use in the clinical environment. Clinical Relevance- This is an optimised 3D modelling method providing clinicians with a time-efficient technique to create patient-specific rib prostheses, without any expertise or software knowledge required.

Management of chest wall defects after oncologic resection can be challenging, depending on the size and location of the defect, as well as the method of reconstruction. This report presents the first clinical case where patient-specific rib prostheses were created using a computer program and statistical shape model of human ribs. A 64-year-old male was diagnosed with non-small-cell lung cancer originating in the right upper lobe and invading the lateral aspect of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th ribs. Prior to surgical resection, a statistical shape model of human ribs was created and used to synthesise rib models in the software MATLAB (MathWorks, Natick, MA, USA). The patient's age, weight, height, and sex, as well as the number and side of the ribs of interest, were the inputs to the program. Based on these data, the program generated digital models of the right 3rd, 4th, and 5th ribs. These models were 3D printed, and a silicone mould was created from them. The patient subsequently underwent right upper lobectomy with en bloc resection of the involved chest wall. During the operation, the silicone mould was used to produce rigid prostheses consisting of methyl methacrylate and two layers of polypropylene mesh in a "sandwich" fashion. The prosthetic patch was then implanted to cover the chest wall defect. Thirty days after the surgery, the patient has returned to his pre-disease performance and physical activities. The statistical shape model and 3D printing is an optimised 3D modelling method that can provide clinicians with a time-efficient technique to create personalised rib prostheses, without any expertise or prior software knowledge.

BACKGROUND: This review aims to explore the potential clinical application of the suppression head impulse paradigm (SHIMP) in patients with unilateral and bilateral vestibulopathy. METHODS: An electronic search was conducted by two independent reviewers in the following databases: Embase, MEDLINE (PubMed), and Scopus. The screening of titles, abstracts, and full texts and data extraction were undertaken independently by pairs of reviewers. The included studies were quality appraised using a modified version of the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. RESULTS: The results were reported following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). Our search yielded 935 unique records, of which 16 remained after screening titles and abstracts. A total of 11 studies were included, covering a total of 418 participants (230 patients and 188 healthy participants). CONCLUSION: SHIMP could be a useful tool to diagnose a VOR alteration in patients with vestibulopathy in both the acute and chronic phases of vestibulopathy.

Biodeterioration is an increasingly widespread process of degradation in the context of the conservation of cultural heritage, which involves a combination of physical and chemical damages together with an aesthetic alteration of materials. For biological damage on monuments caused by pathogens, macro- and microorganisms, chemical treatments are generally used, most of the time dangerous for the environment and for the operator. In this context, new eco-friendly products represent necessary tools for the treatment of biologically deteriorated stone surfaces and represent a new challenge in the field of restoration and conservation of materials of cultural interest. A relatively new class of unconventional green solvents are deep eutectic solvents (DESs), which have peculiar chemical-physical characteristics such as being non-toxic, ecological, biodegradable, non-flammable, and stable in the presence of water. Furthermore, many DESs known in the literature have also been shown to have a biocidal action. All these characteristics make DESs very advantageous and safe, and they could be used as biocidal agents for the treatment of biodegraded surfaces of cultural heritage, being non-toxic for the environment and for the operator. So far, they are used in various fields, but they still represent a novel frontier in the cultural heritage sector. The present research aims at testing five different DESs for the first time in cultural heritage. In particular, DESs are applied to a mosaic located in the Ostia Antica Archaeological Park (Rome), and their efficiency is compared with a biocide product currently used in the restoration field, namely, Preventol RI50, through luminescence, bio-luminometry, and spectrocolorimetry analysis. The preliminary results achieved show the different behaviors of each DESs, highlighting the possibility of employing them in the field of cultural heritage. Further studies have been planned, some of which are already underway, to investigate the properties of DESs and indicate any improvements to make them more effective, both as solvents and as biocides, and easy to apply to various types of materials. The results obtained from this first study are very promising for the use of DES as a new green strategy for cleaning and conservation treatments of materials in the field of cultural heritage.

BACKGROUND: Sleep occupies one-third of human life and is essential for health and for emotional, physical, and cognitive well-being. Poor or insufficient sleep is associated with a wide range of dysfunctions that involve different body systems, such as the endocrine, metabolic, and immune systems, thus compromising the higher cortical functions, cognitive performance, mood, and post-physical activity recovery. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to explore the effectiveness of physical therapy exercises on sleep disorders in patients with neurological disorders. Our systematic review identified 10 articles that investigated the effects of physical therapy on sleep disorders in patients with neurological disorders, 6 of which were included in the meta-analysis. Results suggest that physical therapy exercises are a safe and useful strategy for managing sleep disorders in neurorehabilitation.

Introduction:The music as a powerful, and versatile stimulus for the brain, is at the date sometimes used in neurorehabilitation and proposed as a promising complementary strategy provided in combination with other therapy in individuals with neurological disorders. Different techniques and devices have been developed in the field of the music-based neurorehabilitation.Areas covered:This scoping review analyzes the current scientific literature concerning the different techniques and devices used in the music-supported neurorehabilitation, also focusing on the devices used in music-based therapies in patients with neurological disorders: 46 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included.Expert opinion:Included studies, highlight the potentiality and the versatility of the music-based therapy in the rehabilitation of neurological disorders. The variety of existing techniques allow to applied the music-based therapy in different situations and conditions. Moreover, the wide range of used devices that ranging from the simple musical instruments to the more advanced technologies, allows to develop customized exercises based on the needs of the patient. This review may be considered as a starting point to better design future RCTs that would investigate the effectiveness of music therapy on neurological disorders.

Postural instability and fear of falling represent two major causes of decreased mobility and quality of life in cerebrovascular and neurologic diseases. In recent years, rehabilitation strategies were carried out considering a combined sensorimotor intervention and an active involvement of the patients during the rehabilitation sessions. Accordingly, new technological devices and paradigms have been developed to increase the effectiveness of rehabilitation by integrating multisensory information and augmented feedback promoting the involvement of the cognitive paradigm in neurorehabilitation. In this context, the vibrotactile feedback (VF) could represent a peripheral therapeutic input, in order to provide spatial proprioceptive information to guide the patient during task-oriented exercises. The present systematic review and metanalysis aimed to explore the effectiveness of the VF on balance and gait rehabilitation in patients with neurological and cerebrovascular diseases. A total of 18 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included. Due to the lack of high-quality studies and heterogeneity of treatments protocols, clinical practice recommendations on the efficacy of VF cannot be made. Results show that VF-based intervention could be a safe complementary sensory-motor approach for balance and gait rehabilitation in patients with neurological and cerebrovascular diseases. More high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed.

PURPOSE: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the clinical application potential of the video head impulse test (vHIT) in diagnosing vestibular neuritis (VN). METHODS: An electronic search was conducted in the following databases: Embase, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Google scholar, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Clinical studies were included in which an evaluation was made using vHIT either alone or in combination with other tests or bedside algorithms. Evaluations that were carried out using unvalidated tools were excluded. Only studies of patients with VN (superior, inferior, or in toto) were included. Screening of titles, abstracts, full texts, and data extraction were undertaken independently by pairs of reviewers. Included studies were quality appraised using a modified version of the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. RESULTS: Results were reported according to the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Our search yielded 1309 unique records, 21 of which remained after screening titles and abstracts. Sixteen studies were included, i.e., for a total of 933 patients including 474 patients with a diagnosis of VN. CONCLUSIONS: The diagnostic value of vHIT is high for VN, as it is a high-frequency measurement tool. vHIT is a useful complement or alternative to caloric and rotational tests as an indicator of lesions of vestibular canal functioning, especially at the time of onset. This tool can provide useful clues about the clinical progress of recovery from the lesion through the value of the vestibulo ocular reflex gain and the consequent evolution of the saccade pattern, which allows the patient to stabilize vision on the retina.

A multitude of pharmacokinetics studies have been published. However, due to the lack of an open database, pharmacokinetics data, as well as the corresponding meta-information, have been difficult to access. We present PK-DB (https://pk-db.com), an open database for pharmacokinetics information from clinical trials. PK-DB provides curated information on (i) characteristics of studied patient cohorts and subjects (e.g. age, bodyweight, smoking status, genetic variants); (ii) applied interventions (e.g. dosing, substance, route of application); (iii) pharmacokinetic parameters (e.g. clearance, half-life, area under the curve) and (iv) measured pharmacokinetic time-courses. Key features are the representation of experimental errors, the normalization of measurement units, annotation of information to biological ontologies, calculation of pharmacokinetic parameters from concentration-time profiles, a workflow for collaborative data curation, strong validation rules on the data, computational access via a REST API as well as human access via a web interface. PK-DB enables meta-analysis based on data from multiple studies and data integration with computational models. A special focus lies on meta-data relevant for individualized and stratified computational modeling with methods like physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK), pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD), or population pharmacokinetic (pop PK) modeling.

BACKGROUND: Sensor-based technological therapy devices may be good candidates for neuromotor rehabilitation of people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), especially for treating upper extremities function limitations. The sensor-based device rehabilitation is characterized by interactive therapy games with audio-visual feedback that allows training the movement of shoulders, elbows, and wrist, measuring the strength and the active range of motion of upper limb, registering data in an electronic database to quantitatively monitoring measures and therapy progress. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of sensor-based motor rehabilitation in add-on to the conventional neurorehabilitation, on increasing the upper limb functions of patients with MS. METHODS: Thirty patients were enrolled in the study and randomly assigned to the experimental group and the control group. The training consisting of twelve sessions of upper limb training was compared with twelve sessions of upper limb sensory-motor training, without robotic support. Both rehabilitation programs were performed for 40 minutes three times a week, for 4 weeks, in addition to conventional therapy. All patients were evaluated at the baseline (T0) and after 4 weeks of training (T1). RESULTS: The within-subject analysis showed a statistically significant improvement in both groups, in the Modified Barthel Index and in the Rivermead Mobility Index scores and a significant improvement in Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life-54 in the experimental. The analysis of effectiveness revealed that, compared with baseline (T0), the improvement percentage in all clinical scale scores was greater in the experimental group than the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Proposed training provides an intensive and functional-oriented rehabilitation that objectively evaluates achieved progress through exercises. Therefore, it can represent a good complementary strategy for hand rehabilitation in MS patients.

BACKGROUND: Recently, the potential rehabilitation value of music has been examined and music-based interventions and techniques such as the Negative Mismatch (MMN) have been increasingly investigated in the neurological rehabilitation context. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a negative mismatch-based therapy on the disability and quality of life in patients with stroke in sub-acute phase. METHODS: Thirty patients with a stroke diagnosis in sub-acute phase were randomly assigned to one of two groups: Mismatch (Mg) or Control (CTRLg) group. Both groups used an innovative Android application: Temporal Musical Patterns Organisation (Te.M.P.O). The Disability Rating Scale (DRS), the Modified Barthel Index (MBI) and the Stroke Specific Quality of Life scale (SSQoL) were used at the baseline (T0) and after four weeks of training (T1), in order to assess changes over time. RESULTS: Statistical analysis was performed using the data of 24 (Mg = 12, CTRLg = 12) subjects. The results show a major improvement of the Mg with respect to the CTRLg in all clinical scales score. CONCLUSION: The temporal negative mismatch-based therapy performed with the Te.M.P.O. application could be useful in improving the disability and the quality of life in stroke survivors in a sub-acute phase.

Background: Many studies hypothesize that people who have suffered stroke could benefit from water-based exercises to improve their strength and ability to perform the activities of daily living. Objective: The study aim was to compare the effects of a water-based sequential preparatory approach (SPA) and conventional aquatic therapy in improving motor functions and quality of life in patients with chronic stroke. Methods: Thirty-three chronic stroke outpatients diagnosed with hemiplegia were recruited and randomly assigned to the experimental or control group. Subjects in the experimental group underwent a trial water-based SPA balance training, and patients in the control group were given traditional water balance training. Both groups of participants underwent 45 min of therapy twice a week for 4 weeks. All patients were evaluated before treatment (T0), after 4 weeks of training (T1), and 4 weeks after the end of training (T2) using the Berg balance scale (BBS), the modified Barthel index (MBI), the Tinetti balance and gait scale (TBG), the Stroke Specific Quality Of Life Scale (SS-QOL), and the modified Ashworth scale (MAS). Results: After the training, statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were found between the groups in their score averages on the BBS (p = 0.01) and the SS-QOL scale (p = 0.03). Furthermore, the SPAg showed a significantly greater percentage of improvement on the BBS (p = 0.02) and the SS-QOL (p = 0.03). Both groups obtained a significantly improved MAS score (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Results indicate that water training based on an SPA is more effective than traditional aquatic training for balance rehabilitation of chronic poststroke patients.
