RESUMO

Poplar clones were studied for their phytoextraction capacity in the second growth cycle (6-year growth) on a site in the Belgian Campine region, which is contaminated with Cd and Zn via historic atmospheric deposition of nearby zinc smelter activities. The field trial revealed regrowth problems for some clones that could not be predicted in the first growth cycle. Four allometric relations were assessed for their capacity to predict biomass yield in the second growth cycle. A power function based on the shoot diameter best estimates the biomass production of poplar with R2 values between 0.94 and 0.98. The woody biomass yield ranged from 2.1 to 4.8 ton woody Dry Mass (DM) ha-1 y-1. The primary goal was to reduce soil concentrations of metals caused by phytoextraction. Nevertheless, increased metal concentrations were determined in the topsoil. This increase can partially be explained by the input of metals from deeper soil layers in the top soil through litterfall. The phytoextraction option with poplar short rotation coppice in this setup did not lead to the intended soil remediation in a reasonable time span. Therefore, harvest of the leaf biomass is put forward as a crucial part of the strategy for soil remediation through Cd/Zn phytoextraction.

RESUMO

This study investigated the potential of co-digestion of grass clippings in a typical Flemish agro-digester characterized by an input of 30% manure, 30% maize silage and 40% side streams. No significant adverse effects in the microbiological functioning of the reactors were detected when part of the maize input was replaced by 10-20% grass. However at the highest dosage of grass input, dry matter content and the viscosity of the reactor content increased substantially. These parameters could be reduced again by enzyme addition in the form of MethaPlus L100. It can be concluded that co-digestion of 20% grass in an agricultural digester would not pose any problem if dry matter content and viscosity are improved by the use of an enzyme mixture.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of maxillary sinus puncture as a routine diagnostic procedure to exclude or confirm purulent sinusitis in intensive care unit (ICU) patients presenting with fever or a septic state of unknown origin. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective. METHODS: All patients admitted to the ICU at the University Hospital Ghent who required ENT examination to exclude acute sinusitis as possible cause of their otherwise inexplicable fever or septic state underwent maxillary sinus puncture via the inferior meatus. The results of clinical examination and the relation between the presence of foreign bodies (e.g., nasogastric tubes) and culture results from the middle meatus and sinuses were analyzed. RESULTS: One hundred five punctures were performed in 53 patients. Macroscopic purulent effusions were obtained from 25 and nonpurulent effusions from 19 sinuses. The presence of a nasogastric tube did not influence puncture results but significantly increased colonization of the middle meatus. Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative agents were frequently cultured from sinus aspirates. Although purulent secretions often reveal no growth, most patients present with a multibacterial (40%) or monobacterial (28%) infection. Simple anterior rhinoscopy reduces the need for antral puncture. Only 8% of punctures in patients with a normal clinical examination were positive. CONCLUSIONS: Antral puncture proves to be a simple, fast, safe, inexpensive, and effective procedure for immediate diagnosis of acute nosocomial sinusitis in ICU patients and is therefore recommended as first procedure in these patients, even when only minor clinical abnormalities are present.

RESUMO

This article reviews published research on the physiology of histamine H3-receptors. The function of this inhibitory autoreceptor, its localisation and influence on histaminergic neurones as well as histamine-controlled processes are presented together with the role of H3-receptors in the vestibular system. In addition to a summary of the properties of the main H3-agonists and -antagonists, the pharmacology of betahistine and its place in the treatment of vertigo are discussed.

RESUMO

Cacogeusia, being the patients' main complaint, is reported as a new symptom of amyloidosis, probably caused by a peripheral sensory neuropathy. A case is presented of a patient with weight loss, dysphagia, macroglossia and taste disturbances, due to amyloidosis associated with a plasma cell dyscrasia. The importance of oral manifestations in amyloidosis is discussed.

RESUMO

Antisera to mammalian pituitary and placental hormones have been used to identify and localize the different cell types in the pituitary of the barbel (Barbus barbus, L.). The immunocytochemical labeling employed the immunoperoxidase technique or the immunogold silver staining procedure. Corticotrophic and prolactin cells, visualized using antisera to human adrenocorticotropic hormone and ovine prolactin (PRL), respectively, occur in the rostral pars distalis (RPD). Antisera against mammalian gonadotropins [ovine follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH); bovine luteinizing hormone] or porcine growth hormone selectively cross-react with two different cell populations occupying the major part of the proximal pars distalis (PPD). Thyrotropic cells, stained by an antiserum to whole human thyroid-stimulating hormone preabsorbed with porcine FSH, are scattered throughout the PPD and found amongst growth hormone and gonadotrophic cells. The majority of pars intermedia cells are stained with anti-melanophore stimulating hormone whereas the scattered PAS positive cells are revealed by both anti-ovine PRL and anti-bovine placental lactogen (or chorionic somatomammotropin). The latter antiserum also cross-reacts with the PRL cells of the RPD. Our results indicate that the distribution of the different cell types in Barbus barbus is similar to that described in other families of teleosts. This report is also the first demonstration of antigenic similarity between mammalian placental lactogen and fish prolactin.
